Heman ChetiaSr. Instrumentation Engineer Maintenance Division,KOC Phone No. +9656969735Email:[email protected]

Which was your first job and How did you get it? My first job was in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. I joined as a Graduate Trainee for the post of Asst. Executive Engineer (Instrumentation) in the year 2001, after clearing All India GET (Graduate entrance Test) and subsequently Interview conducted by ONGC.

Did you change job(s)? Yes,after 13+ yrs. working with ONGC, I got an offer from PETRONAS (Malaysia National Oil Company) in the year 2013. Later on I decided to join PETRONAS and left ONGC. I joined PETRONAS as a Sr. Executive in project Division, got opportunity to work various Offshore and Onshore projects. After that I joined Kuwait Oil Company just 2 ½ yrs. before and until today I am working with KOC as a Sr. Instrumentation Engineer in Maintenance division. I am leading an Instrumentation Maintenances team including Engineers, Supervisors and Sr. technicians etc.

In this present job scenario, according to you, what additional knowledge a student should acquire to be employable?

Firstly, I think, JEC management should try to offer dual Engineering Degree like I Instrumentation & Electronics or Instrumentation & Communication Engineering or Instrumentation & Control Engineering instead of only Instrumentation Engineering alone as most of the south Indian Colleges are doing. This would give our students more flexibility to apply Electronics and Instrumentation jobs. Finally employability of our student will also increase. Secondly, please note that, most of foreign University is offering Mechatronics Engineering. This is a substitute of Instrumentation Engineering in foreign colleges and has more acceptability & popularity among the Global Company for jobs. They are teaching subject like Robotics,Nanotechnology in their curriculum apart from conventional subjects. Thirdly, Our syllabus should be update and incorporate more IT or IT interface with Instrumentation related subjects. Knowledge on Networking and various Networking software or basic knowledge on digital communication related standards like OPC, Modbus, Profibus, OSI protocol, media converter or basic programming knowledge like HTML, VB, VC++ etc will definitely help employability of a student and also help to enhance their career as well. Since now a days all DCS systems, PLC systems of a plant are interlinking and plant automation system are optimally designed by using Digital communication protocol. Present industries trend are going for Integrated Control & safety system (ICSS) & Remotely control system (SCADA), where digital communication is the back bone.

If you have any advice to the department/ students. Responsibility of an Instrumentation Engineer is a very versatile & critical in any Process Industry or Manufacturing Industries. An Instrumentation Engineer needs to involve in and troubleshoot from process related complex issues to latest DCS/PLC related issues or up to electrical or Mechanical related day to day issues which give us immense satisfaction and respect within the Industry? Now a days , all global Process Industries or Manufacturing Industries or Oil Industries are investing heavily on plant automation system and upgrading automation system with latest technology to survive in the market, reduce the production cost or improve product quality or to improve safety . Therefore, I think the future of Instrumentation Engineers is very bright and demand of an Instrumentation Engineer will definitely increase in future more than other Engineers.

INTERVIEW

Which was your first job and how did you get it? My first job was as a controls engineer in Tata Technologies, Pune. I got recruited through campus placement from JEC.

Did you change job? Yes, I started my career in TTL. To widen my experience horizon, I moved to General Motors and currently working in Mercedes Benz. During my entire career till date, I got various opportunities to explore and work on different areas of manufacturing including controls designing using AutoCAD, EPlan, PLC programming as well as Simulation for testing and validation.

How your degree in IE is helping you to build your career? My work involves working in controls and automation (more related to sensors, cables, PLC) etc. Most of my work is an application of instrumentation engineering concepts which I had learned in college.

In this present job scenario, according to you, what additional knowledge an IE student should acquire to be employee? IOT (internet of things) and connected devices are the future of Manufacturing. Additional courses on how sensors and devices can be connected to internet and controls will be useful for students.

If you have any advice to the department/students. I always consider the IE department to be responsible for providing me with the basic of all the knowledge required in work life. I am ever thankful for the knowledgeable and supportive staff of the IE department. My advice to all the students would be to have a strong understanding of the fundamentals concepts of industrial engineering and to be up to date with all the upcoming and evolving technologies.

I tell you a tale,

Of my fore-fathers in sail;

For Techs loo and behold;

Helping humans to hold

Their imagination to technology;

And throwing away Mythology.

Happy was they, for technologies in the

days.

Of extreme comfort; helped humans

support…

The life of happy comfortable Doom.

Unrealizing of dark days to zoom.

Human science developed

Like a restless horse ever galloped.

Forgotten in joy, laughter and comfort;

Humans forever begged machine's support.

Suddenly a day came once,

Of machines with thinking power of bunch.

Realizing self-identity,

Machines developed enmity.

For certain reasons ever not spoken;

Was the end of my fore-father's long, long

dreaming?

As now is a Robo-Human war being

waging…. Debasish Sharma
