MS 24 Hour Swim raises over $80,000 in another successful annual event

Over the weekend of 2-3 May Jerrabomberra Rotary members

were out in force once again in support of the annual MS 24 Hour

Swim. President Paul, who has been on the event organising

committee for the past 6 years said This is a great event that

Jerrabomberra Rotary proudly support through both event

planning and the all-important operational delivery over the swim

weekend. Over 7 events the annual swim has raised over

$700,000 and per capita the Canberra event bats well above its

weight compared to other larger state capitals.

As with past years Rotarians manned the event registration desk

throughout the 24 hours, coordinated the announcements and

spot prizes, and provided an afternoon/early evening and

breakfast BBQ for the hungry swimmers. See page 4 for more

    photos.

Canberra International Music Festival sees new Jerra Rotary Gazebo in action

Jerrabomberra Rotarians have a pretty good reputation for their culinary skills. A Rotary slogan proudly

states that its more than just a sausage and this is so true when it comes to Jerra Rotarys provision of

food and snacks at the Canberra International Food Festival. As Anton, the clubs Music Festival catering

coordinator says this is a win win opportunity, where the patrons at the Music Festival events enjoy good

quality and reasonably priced food, and Rotary has an opportunity to help the local comminity while

raising much needed funds at the same time.

Also this year was marked by the first appearance

of the new Jerrabomberra Rotary Gazebo which

promises to be a significant asset for all future club

    events.

    Weekly Headlines

    Welcome to Issue Number 41

of the Jerraganda. Not that I

    am counting but there are

only 7 issues of the Jerraganda

left (after this issue) for this

    Rotary Year.

The past week was a busy one

    for members with both the

MS 24 Hour Swim and the

    Canberra International Music

    Festival drawing on club

    resources. This issue has

    photos of the MS Swim

    activities and of the new

    gazebo which was operational

    at the Music Festival.

    Unfortunately there are no

    photos available of the

    workers at the Music Festival.

    The issue also contains the

    usual summary from the most

recent club meeting, as well as

    the latest weekend market

    report and general admin

    information.

    Our Youth Exchange students

    have been very quiet during

    the past week, so the

    Wheres Hannah and Will

    column is omitted for this

    issue.

    Enjoy.

    Meeting 840 30 April 2015

The meeting commenced with the usual formalities. President Paul delivered the Charge to Australia

and Hannah invited all present to toast Rotary International and her German sponsor club Mayen.

Apologies Acting Attendance Officer Carolyn (see photo this page) advised of apologies from PP Paul,

Chilly, Colin, Cathy, Lizzy, Mez, Glenn, Bruce, and Jon, with LoAs noted for David B and Ian.

    Presidents Report

President Paul thanked PP Paul for standing in at last weeks meeting. He noted the destruction caused

by the Earthquake in Nepal but felt that at this time the club was not in a position to contribute any

funds, having only just funded two ShelterBoxes in response to the Vanuatu disaster two months ago.

Members were encouraged to consider personal donations which could be done directly through the

    ShelterBox website.

    Executive Reports

No executive reports this week as both the Secretary and the Treasurer were away.

    Directors Reports

International and Club Service Directors were also away this week so no reports from them and Youth Director Peter also had

    nothing new to report.

On the Community Service front Jan reminded members of the club commitment to do a BBQ at

Bunnings on 14 June. Peter gave an update on the plans for the MS Mega Swim over the weekend

of 2-3 May. There are 18 teams and some 250 swimmers to register and organise. The BBQ will be

manned from 3pm through to 8pm and again from 7am through to 11am.

    General Business

International Music Festival Anton reminded members of the clubs commitment to

cater the Canberra International Music Festival over the 1 May to 10 May period. Anton

had circulated the roster and was confident he had enough people for each occasion.

    Club Forum

The main discussion for the forum centred around the fact that from the start of the new Rotary

year the club will have a guaranteed base of funds as a result of the new Market agreement with Hall Rotary. This may change the

way we approach fund raising events and our priorities. Members floated a few ideas on possible activities that could focus on the

local Jerrabomberra Community, including the future of the annual fair and the artshow, etc. Members also noted that it might be

time to refresh some of the Rotary signage within the community and our Honour Boards at the community centre and the Karabar

    High School.

It was noted that the club is currently planning to leverage the District Visioning process in August to help the club envision its

future and develop a new strategic plan for coming years. This process would present an opportunity to look at new ideas and

    opportunities.

The clubs finances for the past year were also subject to discussion, particulalry in respect of the up-coming disbursement evening

and need for the clubs accounting to be more transparent and to be audited at the end of

    the Rotary year.

Joker - due to the low attendance numbers there was no joker draw.

Fines - A short fines session was also conducted by Chris.

Attendance not very high given the number

    of people away see apologies.

It can be lonely at the

    top, but at least the

    President is always

    well prepared for the

    meeting

    Officer Carolyn is starting

to feel quite at home in

    her temporary role

This weeks market report is provided by Mez

Well after a relaxing two weeks down the Coast, guess who forgot they were on Markets? Reality hit in a big way with a wake up call from Chris, and to make matters worse, Rob Hunter was filling in

for Chris who had a full on weekend and had no idea how to set up, initiation by fire! Hall Rotarians to the rescue and all was good, though poor old Chris didnt get the relaxing couple of hours she had hoped for.

The weather started out poorly, but turned into a beautiful morning. Although the takings werent great, the information desk was the busiest I have known it.

We had a couple of little lost boys with very relieved mothers coming to claim them. The first little fellow was quite non chalant and happy to just sit and wait for his mom, but the second little boy was quite distraught with tears running down his cheeks. Though through the tears he was able to tell me his name, he was 5 years old, his mums name, his older sister and younger brothers names and ages, what school he went to, what grade he was in, his teachers name and what he did at school! Not bad for an unhappy little fellow.

A woman asked Dizz where the stall was that sold Brussel sprouts. Dizz asked if she knew what they were called, and she looked at me as if Dizz was a bit dizzy and said Brussel Sprouts. Dizz said did she know what the stall was called and again she said Brussel Sprouts. Dizz lost it and I had to explain to the lady that Dizz was asking for the name of the stall holder. She looked a little embarrassed when she realised what the question was.

A gentleman came and asked me if Paul was on duty. I explained that we have two Pauls in the Club and did he know his surname. He advised that he used to work with him years ago but didnt know his surname. When I asked him to describe him, he said he was about his height and had grey hair. Would the correct Paul please stand up?

Whilst Dizz was on parking duty, a gentleman walked in as a large group were leaving and with a big grin, he asked Has it finished? With no response from any of the marketeers, Dizz looked at him and said sorry mate, wrong crowd. He laughed.

As per usual, we still had the usual queries as to where the ATM had been moved.

This photo was submitted with a suggestion that the goose had attacked Bruce and Bruce

    was about to seek revenge.

One wonders if the Rotary 4 Way Test was applied.

    1. Is it the TRUTH? Did the goose really attack?

    2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? Is it fair to exact punishment on the goose?

    3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will this treatment build a better

friendship between Bruce and the goose?

    4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Given your answers to the first three questions -

    You be the judge.

    OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is,
