False hope and lies• There was some talk this week of Hamas agreeing a truce with Israel. However

Hamas’s political leader Khaled Meshaal speaking in Syria, where he lives in exile, said the Palestinian state must have "Jerusalem as its capital, with genuine sovereignty, without settlements".

• Mr Abbas who met President Putin last week met President Bush this week. Mr Bush said he was committed to "a viable state, a state that doesn't look like Swiss cheese, a state that provides hope".

• The reference to Swiss cheese is the fact that on the West Bank there are many settlements that Israel wants to keep. If they do keep them then they would be pockets of Jewish land in amongst the new Palestinian state. Hence a map would look like Swiss cheese. In effect President Bush is saying that Israel must withdraw from the whole of the West Bank not some of it. In Joel 3 we read of the nations who have “parted” God’s land. The word parted means “apportioned” or “divided”.

Russian Fleet Worries Israel

• Russia’s plans to restore its permanent naval presence in the Mediterranean Sea are causing serious concern in Israel. I am convinced that the development of relations between Russia and the EU has logically led us to the need for a new treaty on strategic partnership. The treaty should become an instrument capable of ensuring a higher level of economic integration and interaction, providing for freedom and security on the European continent.
