Jesse Ketchum Public School is located at Bay Street andDavenport Road near Yorkville Village. The school wasestablished around 1831 and the present building dates from1914. The school is named after Jesse Ketchum, a philanthropistwho donated the land to the School Board to build the school andto the city for the park. The school serves a diverse population ofapproximately 450 students, whose cultural backgroundsrepresent many countries from around the world. There are morethan 40 different languages spoken in the homes of ourstudents. At Jesse Ketchum our students build self-esteem andconfidence, learn to work together in mutual respect and trust,and value diversity.
Extra-Curricular ActivitiesThere are a wide variety of extracurricular activities for our students toparticipate in. We field teams infootball, volleyball, basketball, soccer,cross country, hockey, track and fieldand softball. Intra mural sports areoften running at lunch.We also offer clubs for students with a variety of interests. From chess club, choir, theatre, art, knitting and of course ahomework club. Free the Children's Me to We and Eco Club areprominent club at school and helps organize social justice andenvironmental programs. OUr student council helps to organizespirit days, and dances for the senior school.

StoryfestOur students have many opportunities to perform. Storyfest is along standing tradition at Jesse Ketchum. From grade one to gradeeight students learn about the art of story-telling, practise theirstories, and get the opportunity to perform in front of peers andparents. We celebrate Storyfest with a community pot-luck dinner.
School Yard and Eco SchoolsConstruction on our newly renovated playground has justcompleted. Our yard is comprised of an artificial turf field, primaryand junior playscapes, an eco garden, basketball courts and avariety of other seating and play areas. Our garden is part of ourEco Schools initiative, and we recently reached a bronze level inrecognition of our efforts.
STEMJesse Ketchum is a STEM focused school. We have both a scienceroom and a Design and Tech room for our senior students, and aSTEM room that can be accessed by all classes. For primary andjunior students science is taught as part of home room.
Field TripsStudents learn both in and out of school. We augment our programwith trips to Pioneer Village, the Zoo, the ROM, TSO, TUSC, skatingat Ramsden Park, and to the YLCC Camps to name a fewEvery other year, students in grades 5 and 6 attend MonoCliffs for 3days of outdoor education. and our senior school students have theopportunity for a trip to Quebec City.

What Sets Us Apart
Jesse Ketchum is diverse in every sense of the word. Wehave students come to us from all over the city and all overthe world. Our students are excited to learn, and do so in acaring, active environment. With that in mind we try to allow our students theopportunities to have their interests reflected in thecurriculum. Grade 7 and 8 students participate in an 80minute inquiry block each week. They explore topics suchas mural making, technology, cooking, science, fashion,drama and physical education in small groups with teacherswho share the same interests and passions.Our music options for grade 7 and 8 students also offerchoice. Students can take a full year program in band,string or steel pan, or a half year music programcomplimented with a hands-on learning opportunity for theother half of the year.
