PASTOR’S MESSAGE

This Sunday gospel reading takes us to the first miracle of

Jesus performed in Cana during the wedding celebration

where Mary and Jesus and friends were invited. This

reading gives us an understanding of the unique relation-

ship between Jesus and Mary, that not many words need

be spoken. A bond begun from the minute of the Angel

Gabriel’s visit to her which was all about Him. All that

needed to be said was “Do whatever He tells you.” As

Our Lady’s valedictory message, the last words of her in

the Bible, it could not have been better for us to hear.

It is important for us to realize that no human agency, not

even that of His own Mother, could dictate what Jesus

would do. God the Father’s will was Jesus’ sole mandate.

But somehow, I believe the power of the love between

Himself and His Mother, persuades Our Lord to change

His schedule.

So how are we to react to all this? I believe first of all that

we must update our trust in Our Lord’s loving awareness

of us as individuals. He knows us by name. Taking our

cue from St. Paul’s Letter to Corinth, we can believe that

each of our unique talents marks our place in God’s crea-

tion. He knows us and loves us. Pure and simple. Marvel-

ously comforting.

Secondly, Cana makes us aware that often the best ap-

proach we can make to Our Lord is through His holy Moth-

er. She has such vital knowledge of Him that she knows

just what to say and how to say it to her Son. This is not

to deny direct prayerful address to Jesus. I speculate that

the widespread discomfort of our non-Catholic sisters and

brothers with Mary at least in part springs from our own

misguided ways.

We can experience a touch of the joy of Cana in our

hearts as the Sacred Host and Chalice are raised above

our heads at Mass. It lets us join in spirit with St. Richard

of Chichester, who once prayed thus: “O most merciful

Friend, Brother and Redeemer, may I see You more clear-

ly, love You more dearly, and follow You more nearly, day

by day.”

First Reading — As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride,

so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah

62:1-5).

Psalm — Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the

nations (Psalm 96).

Second Reading — All the varied gifts in the Christian-

community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthi-

ans 12:4-11).

Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in

Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply

(John 2:1-11).

READINGS FOR TODAY

SPIRITUAL CORNER

Fr. Kuriakose Nadooparambil, MF

Pastor

We find it difficult to convey ideas to people un-

less we can actually show them something, demonstrate

what we mean. God, who is visible and truly beyond hu-

man understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty.

People what to see, not just listen to an idea. So God

gave us Jesus Christ , God made visible in the world.

During this past week we have seen how Jesus

was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the ma-

gi, and then began his adult “public life” at his baptism by

John. Today’s Gospel reading tells us of his “first sign”,

providing wine for the wedding guest at Cana.

Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was

not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he

even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the pov-

erty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness

before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion

toward people in their ordinary problems, such as run-

ning short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to

know Jesus that we come to know God.

su liturgia: hasta el bautismo llega el tiempo llamado de Navidad;

dificultad.

cemos a Dios.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for

some benefit.” (1 CORINTHIANS 12:7)

St. Paul tells us that God has blessed each of us for a

reason. How has God blessed you? Are you using

your gifts according to God’s plan? How are you help-

ing to build God’s kingdom here on earth? Remember

that if you don’t do the work God planned for you, no

one else can do it. Live the life God has intended for

you. Take time to discern your charisms (gifts from the

Holy Spirit). Experience the supernatural Peace and

Joy God desires for each of us.
