Thank you to Harold Harper, Robert Jewett, Jessie Jewett Elliott, Susan Cameron, Dick and Pat Tobin for their contributions to this newsletter. I thoroughly enjoyed receiving your stories and pictures. In the last issue, the article by Donna Santistevan drew the attention of a member. The result was permission for the article to be printed in another newsletter. I do hope to have more stories and pictures to share in future additions of the newsletter. Message from your President

I think spring has arrived in most areas of the country (except maybe our Alaska cousins). It certainly has in Massachusetts. Two weeks ago I was pleased to see the forsythia out and the daffodils are in full bloom here and at our place in Maine. Easter weekend brought nice warm weather and the spring peepers were out with a vengeance. I removed my Massachusetts Oldsmobiles from winter storage, put the top down on the 1965 442 convertible and went “cruisin” Saturday evening and Claire & I were up bright & early for a spectacular sunrise service. This past weekend, we went to our Maine home and started up the Maine Oldsmobiles and Claire got a ride in the newest one, a 1967 442 W30. I am involved in a local Oldsmobile club that is sponsoring an all Oldsmobile car show in early May at a former Oldsmobile dealer in Wellesley, MA. We are expecting 100+ cars and it should be a good time for all involved if the weather is kind to us. Hope everyone has survived the winter. I assume you have spent those long winter nights researching your Jewett Heritage and documenting it for submission to our Historian Lee Petry. She will be expecting your results shortly :-) Seriously though, I know our new Editor of Publications Linda Remley would be pleased to receive anything you think of interest for publication in the JFA Quarterly. If you see anything Jewett related in a local publication, be sure to send it to Lee and Linda. If you submit something and it is printed in the JFA quarterly, we will send you a JFA brass holiday ornament for your efforts. Claire and I are looking forward to our visit to Minnesota and Iowa in May. My sister Elaine purchased a home in Faribault, MN and we will be enjoying her hospitality with assistance from Sage and Hillory (her dog & cat respectively). Elaine is a Naturalist at the River Bend Nature Center in Faribault. We will also spend 2 nights in Clarinda, IA which claims Glen Miller as a former resident (they have a street named after him) and will spend some time researching my Loranz heritage (they didn’t name a street after us). I have a lot of family records which may be of interest to the local museum and I recently came across the deeds to the family burial plots in the local cemetery. I will fill everyone in on the results or our trip in the next quarterly. As I stated earlier, one of my goals as President of the JFA is to encourage new members, especially younger ones to join and become active in the JFA. I have several ideas in mind already but if you have any suggestions, I would be pleased to consider them. You can contact me by letter at 114 West St – Medway, MA 02053, by email at [email protected] or by telephone at 508-561-7613. Toujours le meme,

A Letter to the Jewett Family

March 20, 2006

Linda D. Remley, Editor The Jewett Family of America, Inc.

The last page of the 2006 Quarterly No. 1 included a Genealogical Hint article which caught

my eye and persuaded me that I might have a story to tell. By way of background, my grandfather, Dr. Frederic Albert Jewett lived at 282 Hancock

Street, Brooklyn, New York. His medical office was in his residence and he also was Brooklyn Health Commissioner. He delivered me at our apartment home in Brooklyn on September 23, 1914. Making a doctor’s visit one day, he saw a thistle growing in an adjacent lot, picked it up and said, “Bobby Burns was a good man – we’ll name him Robert”. Many years later, I tried the same approach with my own granddaughter but quickly learned that times had changed.

My dad, Albert Frederic Jewett, had the great misfortune at five days of age of losing his mother, Emma Louise Kingsbury to illness on 16 August 1876. His father married again, this time to Ella M. Cahaley on 27 April 1887. Ella Cahaley was connected to the Underhill Family which, for several years had owned Croton Point on the Hudson River. A branch of the Underhill family migrated to California by way of Maryland and Florida.

Many years later, I joined American Airlines on December 1, 1939, the day LaGuardia Field opened. On my very first vacation in 1940, I persuaded my mother, Annie Winifred Jewett, to accompany me to Los Angeles, California, where we rented an apartment on the beach at Santa Monica. My mother had gotten in touch with Edyth Hoyt Underhill, an acquaintance of my Dad’s stepmother, Ella Cahaley Jewett. Edyth Underhill persuaded her daughter, Elizabeth Wales Jewett to meet her old friend from Long Island, New York. That is how I met my future wife and enjoyed her company on a Laguna Beach party the next day, also, at mid-week, a supper at her family home and, most importantly, at the Burbank Airport (the only airport serving Los Angeles in those days) where she kissed me goodbye. In my second letter to Betty, after reaching home, I declared my love for her. She invited me back for a week at Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks in the spring. We became engaged and were married in the fall in Hollis, Queens, New York.

Although having been, physically, in each others company for only two weeks (over a fifteen month period), our marriage lasted 59 years ending with Betty’s death, asleep in her own bed on January 13, 2001.

I often ponder how I found a wife-to-be and, with her, later, acquiring a loving family of three daughters, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one of whom would be here today, had it not been for my Dad’s tragic loss at five days of age.

Sincerely, Robert H. Jewett 6 Mudford Avenue East Hampton, New York

Landen Knox Ewing From front cover

Landen Knox Ewing (Wm. Ewing, Jr, Cheryl McCarty (23433), Jessie Jewett (23406), Samuel E. (23395), Edson Asaph (7316), Samuel (4829), Philo (2791, Samuel (1386), Thomas (665), Eleazer (226), Eleazer (72), Jeremiah(15), Joseph (4), Edward (1) born March 5, 2006 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Landen is the son of William and Lauren (Warmington) Ewing, Jr. and is the newest member of our family group. Landen's father is in the Navy stationed at Sugar Grove, West Virginia.

His Jewett family is as follows: grandparents are Wm. and Cheryl (McCarty) (23433) Ewing, Jr. and great-grandparents Jessie (Jewett) Elliott (23406) and the late Owen McCarty.

Landen is lucky to come from a family of many lines of work and high values. Many were farmers, raising Merino sheep on farms, electricians, real estate, education, retail work, and many more occupations so he can do anything he chooses. For outside activities many were pilots of their own small airplanes like his great-great grandpa Sam (23395) known as the flying driller, as he flew to his work in the oil fields. Others go boating, traveling to many areas or collect antiques; so, he will have a chance to choose any future he pleases. Yes, he could even become an athlete in sports like football, which his dad played while growing up or soccer like his cousins.

There will be a whole new world out there for Landen as he grows and discovers the world. Who knows he may end up being a space traveler, as today’s world is never ending. Jessie Jewett Elliott

The records of many of them appear in Volumes I and II of the “History and Genealogy of the Jewetts of America” although I believe that some of them may overlap.

1. Extracted material from the Jewett volumes and Jewetts found in the DAR Patriot Index 2. National Archive Index (which turned out to be sketchy and difficult to read)

The Massachusetts Soldiers were documented in the volumes of the “Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution”. I don’t know if all of them were extracted from those volumes and I need to have someone check to be sure that our records are complete. I am sure that other states have also published documentation of the soldiers who served in the war. I am asking that members who have access to Revolutionary War information in their own states check for Jewetts (of all variant spellings) and copy their military records and forward them to me so our records will be complete. Dick and Pat Tobin began doing genealogy a number of years ago. They quickly discovered their searches would not be the usual, since their families had come from the former Eastern Bloc countries of Europe. This article is reprinted with permission of the author.

Humor, patience and tenacity Dick and Pat Tobin

After twelve years of searching and researching our ancestors, we have learned many things. Probably the most important is the spelling of names is not “carved in stone”. We are second generation Americans. Our grandparents were illiterate as most Europeans coming to America. When they arrived on the shores of this great country, they most likely reported to a naturalized citizen sitting at a desk recording names. If they had papers, they were in a foreign language. Their names were spelled phonetically as the immigrant pronounced it. An example: my grandfather was Teodor Przedzienkowski. The ship manifest at Ellis Island recorded it as Teodor Przesinkowski. He had two sisters and a brother. I am still looking for them. The problem is the spelling of the last name. It has since been Americanized to Presenkowski.

Dick had the same problem with his grandmother’s name, Maryanna Janeczko. We could not find her, but had more luck with her sister, Antonia Gasior. We tried spelling it Antonna Gasior and found her on a ships list. We did not realize it at first, but finally found two other names from the same village (Goscieradow) on the same list. And, yes, Merya Jancezko and her daughter Helena were on the list. We think the correct spelling is Marya janeczko. Without Antonna, we could not have found Marya.

Dick’s grandfather, Franciszek Tabin was recorded as Franciszek Fabin when he came to Ellis Island. We are still searching for Maryanna Kowalczyk, his maternal grandmother. We have been able to find her sisters and a brother. So we will keep looking.

The Irish side was easier to find. Cassidy and Clifford have variations, but it is easier to be creative in the possible spellings. They did come through Castle Gardens. However, there are very few records because a fire destroyed most of them. We have not found the port they sailed from in the British Isles. That is another whole mystery to solve. A trip to Ireland may be in the near future.

We learned we must have an open mind, lots of patience and a sense of humor when doing genealogy. We have found things we did not want to find and many things that surprised us. We have asked questions, that only we can guess at the answer. We thought we were at the end of one branch, only to find someone/something else popped up to pique our interest and Dick and I are at that part of the search again.
