JHSUM MissionThe purpose of the Society is to promote the vitality and continuity of Jewish culture

in the Upper Midwest through preservation, interpretation and education.

JHSUM makes it possible to save and retell the stories ofour community for the benefit of current audiences and future generations. Become a life member, create a named fund, or leaveyour legacy through an endowment or L’Dor Va’Dor fund.

Donations can be made through cash, appreciated stock,Irsael Bonds, savings or retirement accounts, life insurance orbequests. Contact Katherine Tane at 952-381-3363 or [email protected].

Ways to save the stories of Our Lives

This year JHSUM broadened our collaborative part-nerships to exhibit in a wider array of venues andprovide an even richer inheritance of shared stories tocarry forward for generations.

Our annual meeting at theMinnesota History Center cappedour year-long collaboration withMinnesota Historical Society’s(MHS) United States HolocaustMuseum traveling exhibit Life in theShadows: Hidden Children andthe Holocaust. Esther AckosWinthrop, a hidden child in

Greece and her niece Laura Callof brought this storyto life. JHSUM’s presence on the Web reunited the Ackosfamily after 60 years with relatives that survived theHolocaust.

We expanded our cemetery project, funded in part bythe United Jewish Fund and Council of St. Paul, work-ing with Minneapolis Talmud Torah and Beth JacobCongregation Sunday School students to record infor-

mation in the Minneapolis JewishCemetery and the Sons of JacobCemetery. The data will be incor-porated in the InternationalJewish Cemetery Project’s effort tocatalogue every Jewish burial sitethroughout the world.

JHSUM launched a World War II Oral History Projectcompleting more than 20 compelling interviews illumi-nating Midwestern Jewish experiences in the wareffort. We partnered with the MHS MinnesotaGreatest Generation Project and the Library ofCongress Veterans History Project ensuring UpperMidwest Jews their place in this important 20th cen-tury story. One can explore this topic further inJHSUM’s biennial history journal, Prairie Perspectives:Our Jewish Veterans Remember World War II, avail-able now.

We also provided historical content and several geneal-ogy programs for the Sabes JCC Tychman Shapiro Galleryexhibit Alexandra Rozenman & Beth Grossman:Unfolding Time; Stories of Migration.

In a historic collaboration, JHSUM joined theMinnesota Digital Library Coalition (MLDC), a groupof more than 75 Minnesota cultural heritage institutionsthat are creating a computer-accessible collection of pho-tos, maps and documents. The MLDC’s MinnesotaReflections database broadens access to 500 JHSUM

photographic images for researchers, educators, studentsand the public. Partial funding was provided by the Orenand Sharron Steinfeldt Family Photography Fund.

Work began on our Sheltering Home Chronicles’Minneapolis Central Library Fall ’07 exhibit,I Couldn’t Live at Home, an unprecedented multi-mediaexhibition and interactiveperformance series part-nering with more than100 community organiza-tions and artists. The art isinspired by almost a centu-ry of stories belonging toyoung residents, their fam-ilies, caregivers and commu-nities surrounding theNorth Side Minneapolisbuilding that once was theJewish Sheltering Homefor Children. The initia-tive culminates in Spring’08 with an exhibit atMHS in conjunction with Minnesota’s sesquitennial celebration.

We continued our summer Universitystudent internship program funded by theHelen and Leo Wolk Special ProjectsFund just in time to relocate our Eloiseand Elliot Kaplan History Centerarchives to the lower level of the BarryFamily Campus. We have a new officemotto: “From your attic to our basement.”

This year staff renewed our commitmentto the mission of the Society withwonderfully innovative endeavorsconnecting yesterday with today, chil-dren with adults, and Jews with non-Jews all within the framework ofvibrant stories from Upper MidwestJewish life. We thank our members, board of directors and volunteers. Wecould not do it without you as our mostimportant collaborative partners.
