Erik and Jodi Brom and daughter Emily are an active family with many interests. Spending time together is a priority for them, so they try to volunteer in areas where all three can be involved. Their activities in Cathedral parish include combo and bell choir, maintaining the parish website, and serving on the organ and renovation committees. The family have been members of Cathedral since 1996. Erik works at TRW as a Senior Design Engineer and his interests are trains, bicycling,

and Amateur Radio. Jodi, Curator of Collections at the Winona County Historical Society, enjoys scrapbooking, stamping, knitting, and flower gardening. The couple have been married for 22 years. Emily, an eighth grader at Cotter Junior High this year, enjoys reading, tennis, travel, and playing flute, piano and piccolo. Our thanks to Jodi, Erik and Emily for their commitment and generous service to the Cathedral community.

Peace begins with a smile.

—MOTHER TERESA

The Miracle of Reconciliation Reconciliation is a miracle. Whenever enemies make peace, the impossible seems to happen. Humans are capable of tremendous love, but we are also capable of enduring enmity. It is hard for two parties to retrace their steps, to understand the other position and to come to a new level of peace. But it happens, and it always seems to be a miracle. If miracles are to happen, you would expect them to reward those

who are good. But the miracle of reconciliation often comes differently. Reconciliation happens to those who seem not to deserve it. God’s ways are not our ways. God sent Jesus to reconcile us, even though we human beings are sinners. And the miracle doesn’t stop there. Having been reconciled to God, having experienced forgiveness, we can experience the joy of salvation. As Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, “Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the

death of his Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life.” When we find ourselves at odds with someone, we tend to withhold reconciliation. We avoid making peace because we feel hurt, because we feel the offender does not deserve peace. God thinks differently. God created reconciliation precisely with sinners in mind. Recipes, etc. by Mary Donahue

The parish cookbook The cookbook has gone to press. Thank you to all who contributed to it in any way. We have ordered 500 and they will be here in plenty of time for the holiday gift giving. What a super gift to pass on to children, grandchildren, aunts, moms, anyone who loves to cook or just loves cookbooks. With zucchini so bountiful this time of year, I chose a recipe I just made with produce from my friend’s garden. We both liked it (even my husband). Sweet & Sour Zucchini ¾ cup sugar

1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. pepper 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2/3 cup cider vinegar 2 tbsp. white wine vinegar 5 cups thinly sliced zucchini 1 small onion, chopped ½ cup chopped green pepper ½ cup chopped celery In a large bowl, combine first six ingredients; mix well. Stir in vegetables. Cover; refrigerate overnight or several hours. For color, you may add a 2 oz. container of sliced pimento. September 9 is Teddy Bear Day. My mother had many teddy bears. I kept a few when she passed away. My dad gave me one when I was in high school. I named him Mikey. He is a bit tattered. They all are where I can

see them for comfort. So I thought a quote about teddy bears was in order. “An experienced Teddy Bear brings with him a lifetime of knowledge and experience; the wisdom of silence and the stillness in moments of great turmoil. The long-suffering patience that is learned when belonging to a child who is coming of age, and coping with the bewilderment that this period of time can bring, is what he does best. The experienced bear has seen life through the heart and eyes of a child grown to adulthood and perhaps even accompanied that adult all the way to the end of the road.” —Ted Menton Have a “Beary” wonderful month!

Exaltation of the Holy Cross September 14 This day celebrates the dedication of the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. It houses the sites of Calvary, the empty tomb, and the discovery of the alleged wood of the cross. This basilica, still an issue of intra-Christian conflict, remains nonetheless one of the most important shrines in the world.

AOA Exercise Program The Apostolate of Older Adults will resume its exercise program on Tuesday, September 13. The group meets on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1:30 pm in the St. Augustine Room. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Please remember in your prayers: Harold Sheehan, died July 23 Mildred Linden, died August 4 Wilma Schneider, died August 9 Myrtle Walsh, died August 14
