THERON CHAPTER ISESTABLISHED NOW

(Continued Froln Page 1)

Bryan W. N olen was president andHugh W. Brown, Jr., secretary of theold Theron fraternity which is nowTheron chapter. Perhaps due to thefact that both Patterson and Brownthought the other, fellow sent us the listof officers elected we haven't found outanything except that Brother HU'gh isvv. s.

Originally organized to petition AlphaRho Chi the Theron Club at the AnIlArbor convention presented a wonderfully illuminated book of facts supporting their first petition incorporatedtherein. 'That petition could not mustera unanimous vote at the convention sothat none was taken, but the convention~vent on record favoring and encouraging Theron to maintain a house andauthorizing the Grand Council to present more information as to the departInent of architecture at Oklahoma.

Petition Second Tim,e

Finally following the Virginia convention last January a second petition wasr'eceived and this with data was relayedto the chapters. In the interval the twopetitions the department was materiallystrengthened. The actives were pullingdo\vn good awards in the Beaux-Artswork in New York judgments and planswere initiated for a house next fall.

The menlbers maintained a genera]average of '37.4 for the previous quarter,\vhich was 4.8 higher than any -othersocial or professional fraternity on thecampus. In the department, which hassome 12,000 square feet of space on thetop floor of the main engineering building, the boys more than ·held their own.

Knapp, president, was given absoluteauthority to secure the best man available as -head of the department of architecture regardless of the salary to bepaid. Indicative of the growth of thecollege, three new buildings have recently been added to the campus.

Organized SevenYears

Theron chapter was organized in 1919with the avowed purpose the petitioningof Alpha Rho Chi. At present theyhave twenty-four alumni, thirteen activeand four faculty members, of whichnumber two were initiated. None ofthe alumni have as yet been initiated, but the actives have.

The architectural department nowconsisting of 54 members was organizedin 1912. At present there is a faculty offive menlbers devoting themselves wholly to architecture.

Of the signers of the second petitionfour were not initiated at this time. OneAndrew Balfour, track man, has signedthe oath of allegiance and will be initiated soon. I t was felt that he owed hisloyalty to his school as a member of thesquad, hence the action in his case.

What They Do

W. V. Harber dropped out of schoolin February because of health. OrvilleR. Walker, who \vill be remembered asone of the first petition signers, graduated at the end of the winter quarter andis \vorking in Oklahoma City. CharlesThompson married and dropped out ofschool temporarily about three weeksbefore the installation. Walker will beinitiated later, and Harber and Thompson when they return to school.

Of the brothers initiated. Stricker isan Acacia and active in Scabbard andBlade. l\lcKee is an R. O. T. C. captainand wrestles some. Nolen sings in theGlee club, while Holyfield plays in theband. The latter is a Kappa Kappa Psi.Brow:n is an R. O. T. C. officer and atthis writing is at San Antonio in summer camp.

Brattebo is active in engineering society doings and West is a Sigma Tau.Harper is an Acacia and interested inthe R. O. T. C., while Walker is also anAcacia. Balfour belongs to Phi KappaPhi, and Thompson to Kappa Kappa Psiand Sigma Chi. Thompson was also aband man. Sumner is a Sigma PhiEpsilon member and Bossard a KappaKappa Psi as is Flood.

MOLANDER MARRIES MAYEThey say that when the minister pro

We have an announceme:nt from Mr.and Mrs. George E. Boynton, of themarriage of their daughter Maye to Bro.Edwin W. Molander, Mnes-icles '25, at

An Alumni Chapter with headquartersat San Antonio has recently been organized with the avowed purpose of givingDinocrates some reinforcenlent. Themembers of the chapter thus far are S.C. P. Vosper, lVIalcolm Simons, WilliamKleine, Colonel Simmons, and RaymondEverett. The fact that the graduatesare behind us gives fresh encouragelnent.

In our election held the first meetingin JV[ay, Brother Joe Mills was electedW. A., and Brother Harold J essen wa~

To celebrate Founders' Day, it wasattenipted to have all the alum:ni in Texas here at the chapter house. The attempt to get all fell a little short of thegoal set, but a very good representation\vas here. Brother Vosper of San Antonio offered a prize for the best designof a chapter house for Dinocrates.Brothers Simons, Simmons, and Kleine, also of San Antonio, prepared the prog-ram for the competition and set thedate of Rendu and of judgment for thatof the Founders' Day celebration.

The actives of the chapter grew quiteinterested in the problem, and anum...ber of good solutions were submitted inspite of the fact that everyone \vasforced to "vork early and late on BeauxArts problems at the same tin1e. Bro.Buchanan, now in Fort Worth, \von theprize of twenty-five dollars.

On May 4th we had our meeting atthe Acacia house. Our speaker was C.M. Stotz, who gave us a very interestingtalk on Europe and showed us some ofhis sketches made while abroad. Brothers Forsythe and Boldry are sailing 011

Polyklitos is losing eight men with thisyear's class, but the new men are capable of carrying on with a bigger andbetter chapter than we have ever hadbefore. We are graduallv working toward a house, and it should not b~ longnow until we can hope to be able to"snpport one.

I spent one day in Austin lookingoyer the town and the architectural department at the University of Texas. Ilnet one A P X man and one pledgewhile there.

There are many interesting things tosee here in this old Spanish tow:n, including The Almo. It has no greatarchitectural value, but is interesting

Remember last month we said' thatvve didn't know why we had :not heardfrom Brother J. J. Patterson, G. L., withhis story about the old architects, after\vhom our chapters are named? Wellvve found out that there was a goodreason-Mrs. "Pat" and their babe wereboth sick with flu or something.

(Jur \vorthy friend however has beenbusy since, having not only turn~d outthe required yarn but he also directedthe installation of Thero'n Chapter atOklahoma. You see, Brother Pat wason the faculty there for several yearsand really planted the seed for AIl?haRho Chi so that it was more than fittingand proper that he install them. However as G. L. that vvas his job anyway.

P. S.-We learned another thing aboutthe Grand Lecturer the other day. Bein' as how your editor is not far fromDuke Strong's abode we drop aroundno\v and then to see the W. G. E. andh:~ wife. ~v1rs. Strong is responsible forthe information that Brother Pattersonhas a splendid voice. A little detective\vork revealed the fact that he is soloistfor St. A~ndrew's Episcopal church, FortWorth's largest.

A recent mail brought an announcernent of the installation of Xi Chapterof Sigma Phi Sigma at the Universityof North Carolina.

Another letter from the South camefron1 ]Vralcolm G. Simons, Iktinos. '14,one of the chapter men of that Michl Q"ancre\v a:nd prime mover in the establishlnent of the Dinocrates chapter. Sl isin a partnership at San Antonio and isstrong for T~~e Archi. We're glad, hesays:

Grisson,'25, just kicked thru with a check for$lCO, his full house pledge to aid thene\v project. We knovv many brothersbetter able vvho haven't done half thatgood. Perhaps dollars and cents are notgauges of a man's interest in his fraternity, but it is a good indication of whichway he is leaning.

Leo Alberding, Paeonios Ex '25, vvrotethe other day from Lincoln, Bill Bryan'sold home, and vve learned that he isdoing architectural superintending on afive-story store building and a fineGothic church at the time. Great ganle, this outside "vork, isn't it, "Ding."

'There are sonle hard nuts to cracknovv and then. We just learned todayfro11'1 a specialty man of a certain 1\.nthemios alumnus, class of '16, \vho vvasbeat up several months ago by a painterlarger than he was. The specialty manSJ.ys our brother \-vas right and a gentleInan. If the brother rpads this and conlmunicates vvith t'he editor \ve will keephis nalne to ourselves.

Tom Is Chiefl\nother 111an \vho has hard nuts to

You know this business of editing The/:lrchi, \ivith the struggle to obtain continuous co-operation froln chapters, getskinda boreso111e sometimes until we geta message like this from a man likel\rthur E. Benson, Anthemios '15, headof his chapter's alumni association:"lVIust say that the last Archi was a'wovv.' Truly a splendid piece of workand just saturated with interest. Simplya knockout! Congratulations."

Want More Bensons'I'hank you, Benny, old top. Do you

know that it wouldn't be hard to publish just that kind of an issue everymonth if we mould get the same kindof support from all we \vTite to for infonnation that we do when ,we write toyou. I am thinking now of a couple ofbirds in Detroit, one an Anthemios' manand another an 1ktinos brother whohaven't answered us yet. Personally Ithink vou are busier than either ofthenl, perhaps both. And we will conti nue to strive to please.

One Inore story will now have to bewritten by the G-rand Lecturer, in viewof the fact that vve have a new chapter. Therefore we are giving him until nextOctober to investigate "the past" ofOlaf Theron.

And speaking of shop talk, alTIOng thefalnily so to speak. Our Business Manager, Paul E:. Nystrom, has moved toNo. 6 1\1unger Terrace, Duluth. Therefore, gather together your dollars andconlplete paying your life subscriptionsby l11.ailing thern to him at that address.

By the \vay, this bird, N ystroln weheard rumors up and got married rec~ntly and kept the infonnation fromyour /editor wit-h the hopes that it \vouldnot be broadcast upon the front pageof The Archi. If it were 'not for thefact that \;ve have the issue almost nladeup at this issue \ve would sure spreadit there.

For upon rUDlor vve wired BrotherPaul and received the following wire inresponse: "Married May twenty-ninth,congratulations lTIutual." That wiredon't tell a whale of a lot, does it? Let'slook into history. The last we kne\vBro. Paul E. Paul didn't mention the youngwoman in his wire nor have w~ heardof any family row, so \VC ar~ hopingthat he married "Sister Edith."

Notice vvhat Paul said about congratulations being mutual? Well betterlook at the lVfnesicles chatper notes, yousee your editor novv has an assistant inthe person of his better half who isuniting with him in thanking the Chicago Alumni Chapter for a splendid remembrance at the time of our wedding. We are glad that The A rchi led' us tomeet this fine body of up and at 'emA P X men. Anthemios Chapter Letter

The Fifth Annual Home-coming at theUniversity of Illinois was held October28 and 29 1915. Since a number of thealulnni ol Anthemios Chapter indicatedtheir intention to return to Alma Materand take part in the celebration, we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and have a home-coming of ourown.

The old graduates began to pour inThursday evening, but the majoritylnade their appearance Friday afternoon.~-\fter the usual, or rather unusual, greetings and the numerous exchanges ofcon1pli~Lents, we had a real "get-together.

Our house was decorated w~th autun1nleaves, corn, jack 0' lanterns, etc.A.. n10ng the many features on the prorrram was the Senior Hobo Band. It is~ot for us here to describe the costumes with \vhich these serious-mindedand dignified seniors attired the!liselves;in fact, we are sure no words in theEnglish language would suit the occasion. Dancing was on the boardsfrom eight to twelve, with music fur'nished by a three-piece orchestra.

'l'he following alumni were present:\Vadsworth '14, Dunlap '14, Boonstra '14,Wolfe '13, Benson '15. Chaperones wereProfessor and Mrs. Provine, Dr. a:ndMiss Ricker and Mr. and Mrs. Santree.

In a recent letter, Brother Bullard(Honorary) of Tacolna, Wash., says thatbusiness is picking up in the West andthat a lnarked improvement is anticipated the coming year. Brother Bullardhas been devoti:ng hilTIself during thepast six 1110nths to school building workin rural and village districts, in whichthe educational and social center ideasare united.

Iktinos Chapter LetterAt the time of this letter, we ar ~ all

thinking of examinations which startabout the end of January and also ofthe fraternity scholastic list which ispublished each year by the university.I t is the opinion that the brothers willbe found higher up on the list than previously when the returns are counted. The holiday vacation is past and all thefellows have return, most of them reporting an excelle:nt time.

Iktin'os is pleased to report the pledging of four men to the fraternity, all ofthem good blood and true. They are(a man later dropped): Orrin F. Stone,Pontiac, J\1ich.; Harold 111. ICiefer, Detroit, and (another also expelled). Thereare also several good prospects vvhosenames vve hope to include in our :nextletter to The .Arch;.

"My Archi came to me while in Rome, and you can take my word for it, 1thoroughly enjoyed every word of it.The A rchi staff is certainly to be congratulated in the efficient way in whichthey are handling the work. I t certainlyis' a grand and glorious feeling to knowthat even though you are some 6,000miles away from home and continuouslymoving about you are still able to getyour monthly copy of The Archi asusual; this is certainly worth commending.

From Rome to Pompeii"In a few days we were on our way

again across the frontier into Italy, where we met new people, new customsand even new money. We arrived inRome about the 20th of May, but owingto the heavy rains they were havingthere we stayed only five days and againwe were on our way south, this time toNaples which brought us very near toPompeii and Mt. Vesuvius.

"Again we were on our way this tripacross the Mediterranean on one of the!llOSt enjoyable moo:nlight boat trips yOtlcan imagine to Palermo, Sicily. It wasgetting quite hot by this time, so wedecided not to linger longer, and in afew days we were on our way acros~

some weeks. In a city whose civilization requires registration of no one savethe saloonkeeper and who distributeslicenses to none but dogs, architectshold forth in great numbers. Besides, one cannot be too careful about selecting a boss. I t pays to go slow. I hopesentimental SOpholllores will realize thisand steer clear of boulevards thesespring evenings.

One fault I find with architects as aclass-and I have met all the Milwaukeeones-is the absolute lack of any aver-age consistency in their interest for thestruggling draftsman. Either they refuse to reply at all to your patronizing"Good morning" or you find that afterten ll1inutes in their company, you havelet out grandpa's secret about theKeeley cure, betrayed Brother Will'strouble about the bank and told whyyou, yourself, prefer oranges to ba.nanas, pajamas to nightshirts or the baSIC daygannent to either.

The Ideal Employer-So it was that the SUlnmer slipped by

and yet no glimpse of the ideal employer. Some half dozen times I thoughtI had found him, but in each case thedisillusionment came vvithin a few daysand, we parted, as much in anger as insorrow. Along towards Christmas, Iwas beginning to think of hiring out asa choir singer, bartender or something,or else to transfer my sole allegiance tothe Baltimore Lunch, where I scrubbedfloors nightly and for \vhich I and mytape-worm received abuse and nutriment, respectively. But at last I foundhim, my Perfect Man.

From my present position in the profession, which is, I think I may say~lithout boasting, of such opulence thatoccasional recklessness in a serve-seHon Sunday does not mean a fast laterin the week, it is difficult to explain thefate that led me to him. But that itwas providence, evcryo~1e is agreed. AsI remember it, such was my enthusiasmin those days, I even forgot to mentionto the original member of the finn thatanother and greater name was about tobe gilded on the door, rubber-stampedon the stationery and taken in vain bythe office boy.

The partner of my choice a\vakenedone morning to find that I had almostimperfectly insinuated ll1yself into hisoffice chair and was making serious inroads on the client's cigar supply as,veIl as the stenographer's heart. Butwhat could he do? He daren't poisonme, for that would be murder. Hecouldn't tell me to- leave for he hadn'tthe heart; I suppose he resolved, likethe vvise man he was, to accept the incumbrance with good spirit, until somebusy afternoon, when he knows I'll besleeping, he can pack his suitcase andsneak back out West.

To a youth excessively end0'Yed witharchitectural ambition, influe'ntIal relatives and collegiate degrees, decoratedwith the Honor Society's Iron Cross, possessed of an £esthetic dis1?osition ~ndimbued with an overwhelmIng passIonto \vork himself to death, it is, perhapsno soul-trying task to leave ~he warmfraternity fireside, his kind fnends andsolicitous creditors and journey to unknown and cheerless regions in searchof lucrative enlployment.

But when one is of the COlnmon clay, not averse to a little sleep or an occasional meal in whom the three o'clockilnpulse to q~it the dra\ving board forfairer company is strong, and whoboasts of no academic honors save aSunday School diploma-when such anone, I say, suddenly discovers that h~smonthly joy-giving-check-from-home ISno 1110re, a financial crisis, yea, even apanic is imminent.

\Vhet1 the crash came to the authorlast June his first thought, nat?rally, wasto turn to his chosen profession In thehour of trial. He sought out his kindlyprofessor and faculty adviser and without mentioning, of course, the. Inerc~nary material and pecuniary dIfficultIes,made known his intention to quit, for atime, the academic shades and plungedat once into active practice. The venerable gentleman was both surprisedand grieved. A desire to obtain a m?reintimate kno\vledge of the profeSSIonthan could be gotten from books, hepointed out, was both unusual ~nd unnecessary. Neither he nor hIS colleagues had ever forsaken. their C?zystudy chairs for the sordId practIcalfield. "Why then," he said, "shouldyo~?"

That Made MilwlaukeeBut in the end I had my way and a

day later I found myself b.eing blo\vnabout by the malt-scented WInds of fastand famous Milwaukee, eagerly assimilating, Tel1t6nic kultur, habits and prod~

l\1y original plan was to devote thewhole of the first afternoon to the COllsideration 6f employment offers, the decision to go out in time for a burlesqueshow and a tour of the Palm Gardensafterwards; Later, I saw fit to withhold my signature from any pay roll for
