Press release

Jumping Longines Crans-Montana promises a great show

Crans-Montana (Switzerland), 4th July 2019 – The gamble of becoming a 4* event – and thereby the most prestigious high-altitude competition in Europe – paid off in 2018, and the fourth edition of Jumping Longines Crans-Montana promises a great sporting festival in central Haut-Plateau.

A woman in the lead

Among the many riders hoping for victory in Sunday’s traditional Grand Prix Longines (at 2 p.m. on 14th July), American Kristen Vanderveen is the top rider competing and the one to watch out for. This 30-year-old has been managing stables at Wellington, Florida since she was 18, and will want to show her full talent at her first appearance at Cry d’Er. British rider Robert Whitaker (son of the famous John and nephew of another champion, Michael Whitaker) will be another serious contender for the top prizes throughout the four days of competition. Other notable competitors are Billy Twomey from Ireland, winner of the world Top Ten Final 2011, and Hans-Dieter Dreher (Germany) who won this very same Grand Prix of the Jumping Longines Crans-Montana in 2012 and 2013, as well as Nicolas Deseuzes from France, runner-up to Wouter Devos (BEL) in the 2018 Grand Prix Longines and stalwart supporter of the Haut-Plateau event. Switzerland is well represented

No fewer than eight members of the Swiss elite will be making the journey to the Valais region. They include other event faithfuls Romain Duguet and Alain Jufer, Jumping Longines Crans-Montana ambassador Edwin Smits, and the “veteran” Walter Gabathuler, six-time team medallist at the European Championships! The 65-year-old doyen of the Swiss team in Crans-Montana will not be making things easy for the younger generation, who include Anthony Bourquard, protégé of Olympic champion Steve Guerdat. Local riders will also be in the spotlight at Jumping Longines Crans-Montana in the form of the resort’s ambassador Aurelia Loser, very much in contention, along with young rider Jessica Dolt and the more experienced Laurent Fasel and Jessy Putallaz. Innovations

The event passed to 4* level in fine form last year; 2019 is about consolidation. Each year builds on the success of Jumping Longines Crans-Montana, and it must maintain the recipe for success that has made it the most important high-altitude competition in Europe. This elevated position has attracted a host of international riders: in 2018, 68% of Jumping Longines Crans-Montana competitors came from abroad (from no fewer than 20 countries), compared to only 32% in 2017. However, the event’s president François Besençon and its director Daniel Perroud are conscious of the constant need to develop and make the most of the event. So this fourth edition boasts a larger warm-up arena and the number of entries for the CSI1* Amateur has been increased to 60. Additionally, a golf competition has been organised for Friday, 12th July thanks to the support of Six Senses Crans-Montana, the event’s new principal partner. “This will bring together two great local summer traditions: golf and horse-riding”, explain the two organisers.
