Building on an 82-year record of success, the Junior League of San Diego is rooted in the belief that a group of women can be a powerful force for change. JLSD of-fers women the opportunity to implement change in our community and to connect with other women with a concern for present and future generations.

Who Are We?

Started in 1929, the Junior League of San Diego has been integral in assessing com-munity needs and instituting programs that meet those needs. The Polinsky Cen-ter, Voices for Children, LEAD San Diego, and Kids on the Block are just a few of the organizations and events that were cre-ated by JLSD single-handedly or through a collaborative community effort.

Over the years, JLSD has partnered with dozens of San Diego non-profits to pro-vide strategic volunteer support as well as financial assistance and Community Assistance Grants. From its inception, JLSD has addressed critical issues such as Domestic Violence Prevention & Inter-vention, Literacy, and Family Support for Education and now focuses its efforts on reducing childhood obesity in San Diego and improving the health of San Diego’s children by inspiring parents and children to make healthy eating and exercise a regular part of their lives.

how is JLsd different?

Our organization is run and staffed by vol-unteers. Women throughout San Diego County come together to create programs that improve San Diego’s communities – and receive invaluable, on-the-job training in the process. Our members learn a variety of skills, such as leadership and organizational development, community

program work, diversity training and fundraising. Through our unique mission, our members learn to manage and train volunteers, unite communities and form partnerships with businesses and the people we serve to make San Diego a bet-ter place to live

The Junior League’s nearly 1,000 mem-bers research and develop community programs in San Diego County through services projects, collaborations, edu-cation and advocacy. Each year our members contribute under $1 million in contributions and volunteer hours to sup-port outreach programs and community assistance grants. For these efforts, the Junior League of San Diego was named 2006 Philanthropic Organization of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Why You should support JLsd

• JLSD provides San Diego with a valuable commodity – trained volunteers.

• JLSD’s training includes identifying unmet needs in the community and partnering with local non-profits, after which JLSD develops unique programs to fulfill those needs along with the resources and volunteers to support it.

• Supporting JLSD provides immediate community impact which carries over to the future ultimately making an investment in San Diego and JLSD.

• By supporting JLSD, you are actually increasing your impact now and in the future. This is the donation or partnership that keeps on giving.

Our Provisional groups were hard at work this Fall, planning and executing fun and educational nutri-tion and exercise-focused events for Girl Scouts, at-risk teenagers and students in our community.

Julie Elginer, DrPH (c), MBA and Public Policy Director for the Junior League of Los Angeles introduces the topic, pro-viding some basic statistics and setting the stage by clarify-ing definitions and summarize the work that Junior League has already accomplished in California, including plans that are underway for 2011.

Mr. Raul Martinez, shared his touching and painful story of his wife, Kelly’s, struggle with the disease, creating a “face” for PMAD, discussed that it’s a universal issue affecting millions of families in every community, and created a “call to action” in the hopes that no other husband or child would have to go through the pain of losing their wife or mother to this disease.

Dr. Maria Lourdes Reyes discussed her work in the community and the need for more services, discussed the unique void that non-profits (Junior Leagues in partnership with other organizations) can fill and the most pressing needs that she sees on a daily basis.

The Emerald and Ruby Provisional groups partnered with Sou-plantation in Chula Vista to offer the JLSD F.A.N. (Fun and Nutri-tion) Tour to Girl Scouts. The Provisional members led the group of 9 scouts and their mothers in an interactive exercise session, utilizing partner activities and balloons to demonstrate how fun exercise can be.

The Onyx and Turquoise Provisional groups held a Supermarket Sweep at the Toussaint Academy of Arts and Science.Students learned about nutrition and participated in a fun activity where they practiced making healthy food choices. The group partnered with nutritionist Curtis Jackson, who explained the Food Pyramid and what a “healthy lifestyle” is to the attendees, and what calo-ries, hidden sugars and preservatives are in some foods that could lead to an unhealthy body.

Finally, the Sapphire and Rose Quartz Provisional groups worked with our community partner Storefront (San Diego Youth Services) in Hillcrest, a temporary shelter for at-risk 12-17 year old teen-agers, and lead an “Amazing Race” themed event for the teens residing at the facility.

Congratulations to all the Provisional groups for executing these community event projects flawlessly. We can’t wait to see what fundraising activities they come up with in the spring!

Community Impact

Whenever someone asks you why you joined the League, what reasons do you give? One of the most common answers I hear is that women join the League to make a difference in the community. Our community projects often provide an opportunity to make a longer term difference over the course of the League year or even several years however, sometimes nothing can beat the feeling of instant gratification that an Impact event provides.

By the end of November, the Impact com-mittee offered League members over 20 opportunities to volunteer and make an immediate difference. In other words, as a member, you have had an opportunity to volunteer an average of 7 times per month.

So just how has the League impacted our community?

Through Impact events alone, our members have volunteered over 800 hours this League year. We have made and handed out over 800 lunches to San Diego’s homeless population. We have picked up and filled approximately 50 bags of trash making the beaches in Ocean Beach and Mission Beach cleaner. Through Hand-up Pantry and the USO Dinner, the League has worked hard to give back to the military community of San Diego who in turn has given so much to us. Our members have helped buy, prepare and serve dinners to over 300 people at the Ronald McDonald House and over 80 people at the Bannis-

impact Committee –making an immediate impaCt

ter House. Everyone that receives one of these dinners is always very grateful to have the comfort of a hot meal after a long day spent at the hospital caring for a loved one.

Make sure to remember the reasons why you joined the League. Sign up to volunteer at an upcoming Impact event. We guarantee it will be social, you will have fun and you’ll leave with a feel-good sense of instant gratification knowing that you have made a differ-ence in our community.

Interview with Sustainer Director

Barbra Kramer

Q. What led you to the Junior League of san diego?

I was involved with several other chari-ties in San Diego and made friends with several women who were members of JLSD and they “invited” me to join. When I joined JLSD one still had to be “invited” and “sponsored.”

Q. What is your community involvement outside the Junior League?

Currently, I am one of the co-chairs for the Girls Scouts of San Diego’s Urban Cam-pout 2011. I was asked by the incompara-ble Debbie Rider to be one of her co-chairs along with Carla Church (a former League member)

I am also serving on the Steering Commit-tee for the House of Peru. Peru is in line to have a cottage built in Balboa Park’s International Cottages. The Steering Committee is working towards raising funds required to build the House of Peru. Former league member, Gladys Jones, who is originally from Peru, has been very instrumental in the efforts to have a House of Peru built.

My past community involvements have included Slow Food Urban San Diego, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ameri-can Cancer Society, San Diego Symphony, SPS (a singles organization who supported the arts and culture in San Diego.)

Q. What have been lasting contributions to the Junior League?

I hope I have made a difference or enhanced someone’s experience in each of my placements in JLSD. A favorite in my early JLSD career was St Vincent de Paul where the committee worked with the children who resided at the facility. Witnessing the smiles on the faces of the children when a magician performed his magic or creating a piece of art to enhance their rooms always brought a great sense of pride to our committee.

Serving on the Fund Development Council I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to co-chair the Encore Fashion Show in 1996. As part of the fundraising for the event we sent out plaster masks to celebrities requesting they return them decorated. The masks were then part of the silent auction. One of the memorable ones came from Maya Angelou who decorated hers with inspiring words of wisdom. Chairing “Rollin on the River” -- Encore 1997 was especially meaningful for the great bonds that were formed by the commit-tee. Especially fun were the evenings spent learning to tap dance (again) to perform in the Follies portion of the events entertainment. I was very proud of the committee and economic success of the event – we SOLD OUT! --

enabling us to fund and support the many JLSD projects.

Serving on the Board of JLSD in vari-ous capacities from Board Assistant to Recording Secretary to Chair of Nominat-ing taught me skills that I have been able to utilize in all aspects of my life. JLSD is truly a training organization and I have learned so tremendous amount in my career with the JLSD. We are never too old to learn.

Q. Who is your role model?

First, I have to say my (late) parents. My mother was the epitome of a lady. She was always polite, helpful, loving, encouraging. I can only hope I am half of what she was. My father would chal-lenge me to think outside the norm and be accepting and respectful of all.

The women of JLSD inspire me. I am in awe of the accomplishments and com-mitment of many of the women I have had the honor of meeting and becoming friends with. JLSD fosters a tremendous foundation of skills and knowledge one may take out into the community and do wonderful work

Q. Favorite Quote

The Golden Rule has always been a favorite.

strictly sustainerby Barbara Kramer, Sustainer Director

On October 26 over coffee and tea I met with Debbie Rider and Stephanie McGuire (along with Pam Fuchs, the 2009-2010 Sustainer Directors) to transfer the reins of Sustainer Director. Maybe, I should say transfer the “shoes” as Debbie, Stephanie and Pam have left big shoes to fill this year as Sustainer Director. Nonethe-less with my fondness for shoes I am up for the challenge!

I have enlisted a group of my League GalPals to form a Sustainer Council (a few attended the first brainstorm-ing session including Kimberlee Andrews, Elizabeth Palmer, Deoras Thompson and Stephanie Ward). The result from the brainstorming meet-ing is an exciting (and ambitious) roster of events and activities. We hope there will be a little something for everyone. Some of the ideas include; a meet the author, talk ‘n ‘tinis, talk ‘n tea with

Melanie Aalbers, share a day working with Actives at Olivewood Garden, maybe take a bus trip up to the Rose Bowl Flea or Long Beach markets, tour a San Diego Historic landmark, go behind the scenes at one of San Diego’s premier live theaters. If there is a special interest you would like the Sustainers to include, please email us at [email protected].

Kicking off the events is the sustainer holiday Tea and Fashion show on December 5th at one o’clock in the afternoon at the

beautiful La Jolla Country Club. Please consider celebrating the holidays by joining with other ladies of the League (guests welcome) at what is becom-ing a League tradition. Invitations have been mailed and we are looking forward to a lovely afternoon. RSVP on line to www.jlsd.org. $42 per person.

Interested in channeling your inner “model” we are looking for Sustain-ers to model the latest fashions at the table walking style-show.

We are quite excited about the Charter day Lunch. So please get out your 2011 calendars and hold a place for March 13 when we will celebrate the Junior League of San Diego. This promises to be a great afternoon.

If your Sustainer Affinity (Special Interest) Group has an event or meeting that you would like to announce, we would love to include it in here in League Lines. Email the information to [email protected]

Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming events and activities. Better yet be the first to know by signing up for “electronic” copies of League Lines and E-Blasts.
