From the President ·

Happy New Year! As we embark on 2014 and the excitement a new year can bring I am reminded of everything we have accomplished in 2013. Our first year Touch a Truck fundraiser was a huge success! The provisional project of redeveloping our entrance and flower beds was remarkable. We volunteered in a number of DIAD opportunities and had several members meet their requirements before the new year. Additionally, we partnered with the Huntington Area Food Bank and organized a Soup Drive for the month of January. With these accomplishments behind us we still have more to achieve. Our Character Breakfast chairs and committee members are actively working on our 9th CB event which will take place on March 8th. We have another class of provisionals that will be joining us and organizing our Leigh Ann Litton Memorial Rummage Sale as their provisional project. KITK will be having an event and there will be many DIAD opportunities. As you can see there is still plenty of time and ways for our members to get involved and make an impact in our League and our community. I wrote to you in the fall about the importance of our membership — the importance of developing the potential of our members and how they and their experiences are the key to our success, and I still believe that. I am, however, a firm believer in our whole mission and along with membership comes promoting volunteerism and improving our communities. We serve our community both by training our

members to be effective community volunteers and leaders, and also by performing direct community service. I ask myself the question, “Are we doing these things to the best of our ability?” My answer often changes. Our organization is only as strong as each of you and your dedication to serving the community. Without your contribution, we cannot accomplish everything we set out to do this year. Therefore, I urge all of you to actively participate in our meetings, attend and contribute to the events, recruit your friends and family to assist in our cause, make new friends, reach outside of your comfort zones and help to make this an enjoyable, positive experience. Ask yourself every morning, "What will I give to those around me today?" Make a DIFFERENCE. Volunteerism — Doing more than you have to, you want to, for a cause that you consider good. I look forward to serving the community of Huntington with you! Together we can make a difference! Sincerely,

Recently, the Board of Directors of the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables held their Board meeting at the historic headquarters of the Junior League of Miami. Leslie Rivera, Sustaining Junior League member and a past President of the Junior League of Miami Foundation was the featured speaker. The Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables was founded in 1991 with the mission to support an environment in which its members and all community citizens can understand, appreciate, exchange information and live with Coral Gables history. In keeping with this mission, the Board of HPACG plans to conduct their monthly meetings at historic sites in the city. HPACG President Ann Rosalind Goodman and Karelia “Kare” Martinez Carbonell, HPACG board member and past President of the JLM Foundation, greeted the Board with sherry and chocolates as a prelude to the evening. JLM President Leanne Tellam was also on hand to welcome the HPACG Board members. Leslie gave a brief history of the building (including the famous Tallahassee “cookie” story) and how it became the Junior League of Miami headquarters. A tour of the site was followed by a question and answer period and then the HPACG Board meeting. The JLM headquarters was originally built as a two-story “Venetian Palace” for Patrick Bennett in 1925 by George Merrick’s Coral Gables Construction and Supply Company. It was designed by George Fink and cost $30,000. It was the first commercial building in Coral Gables and is the only remaining example of this type of

commercial building west of City Hall. Thorn Grafton was the architect for the adaptive reuse of the building in 1995 after it was bought by the JLM. Teamwork Construction handled the construction end of the project. The project which was divided into four phases was an enormous effort by all concerned and could not have been accomplished without the outstanding help of both JLM members and others in the community who lent their financial and practical support. The building’s front door is historic and was found on site during demolition. In addition, Dade County pine flooring was discovered and was painstakingly restored. The flooring now covers the entire reception area. On the second floor facing Biltmore way, the original porch area was reclaimed. It had been enclosed during one of the building’s many “updates.” The historic iron railing around the stairway has been preserved and slightly modified to comply with safety code requirements. The building’s historic furniture has been refinished and the upholstered pieces have been recovered using donated fabrics. The end result is that the JLM headquarters is both functional and beautifully decorated. HPACG recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships. The scholarship winners were chosen by the University of Miami/School of Architecture in recognition of their proven academic achievement and interest in the area of historic preservation. HPACG is currently working on establishing an Advisory Board. For additional information please visit historiccoralgables.org.

Community Center · The Junior League has now formed a

Community Center Committee to assist

with the managing and upkeep of the

building. This committee includes Leslie

Culp, Becky Francke and Heather

McKernan. We are excited to announce

the resolution of our ongoing toilet issue

with the assistance of TR Johnson & Son,

Inc. of Huntington. Our next project will

be addressing the back parking lot drain,

which appears to be clogged. Remember

to spread the word about availability of

the building to rent and the discounted

price for members.

Congratulations are in order for Leslie Culp, who graduated

from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in

Charleston S.C., and was named Class President.

Congratulations also to Ashley Kasey who welcomed a new

baby in December, Jack Conner Kasey.

We are very proud of Rebecca Hansen, who was

named Marshall University’s Employee of the

Month in September.
