It is an Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) priority that ever student read on grade level by third grade. The research is clear that a highly skilled teacher is the single most important factor in the reading achievement of students. Therefore, the role of the school-level reading specialist as outlined in this job description will be to function solely as a reading specialist and coaching partner with third grade teachers. Additionally, a proportional amount of the school reading specialist’s time as determined by careful data analysis will be dedicated to working with third grade students with greatest needs in reading achievement. We are confident that this job description offers an opportunity to provide effective support that will increase educator effectiveness and result in students possessing the reading skills necessary to become grade-level readers by third grade. Job Description – ARI – Reading Specialist SELECTION: ARI-funded school reading specialists who match this job description will be selected according to the hiring policies of the district. SUPERVISOR/SUPPORT: The district determines the supervision of the ARI-funded school reading specialists. The ARI will provide regular support in the school and during required professional development meetings to enhance the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the job description. The district and ARI regional and ALSDE staff will assure adherence to this job description with this contract. EMPLOYMENT TERMS: A minimum of a nine-month contract is recommended in order to fulfill this job description. GENERAL DUTIES: In order to ensure that all third grade students are reading on or above grade level, the duties of the ARI-funded school reading specialists will be to spend full school days:

Job Status - This position will assist the Director of Special Education by providing administrative and technical staff assistance in the implementation of the policies and procedures related to special education services. Serve as a liaison to school district personnel in coordinating all program and services related to students with special needs.

1. Utilize a student profile of characteristics of potential dropouts developed by the SDE to identify high school students with the probability of not graduating. These characteristics include:

a. History of school failure, retention, and/or overage for grade. b. Low standardized assessment scores. c. Failure to pass any part of the AHSGE. d. Special education/disability determination. e. Attendance/truancy issues. f. Behavioral issues (e.g., detention, suspensions, expulsions, and other). g. Lack of school involvement (e.g., low expectations, minimal or no

extracurricular involvement) or protective factors. h. Family at risk (e.g., low socio-economic status, transient, and limited English

proficient). 2. Collaborate with feeder, middle and elementary, school staff to use a profile of

Job Status – Alternative Education Center Contract Length – 9½ Months Position Title – Transition Specialist Reports to – Alternative Education Center Director Objective – The Alternative Education Program Transition Specialist will assist students, parents, the base school administration and teachers, and the Alternative Education Program faculty in providing a smooth transition to and from the Alternative Education Program. The Transition Specialist will communicate with the student’s base school teachers and administrators. The Specialist will monitor and provide follow-up support for a three (3) week period when the student returns from the Alternative Education Program.
