STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

When I was in grade school, I always found myself writing fictional stories for my fellow classmates in between classes. I never would have imagined that I would have come this far with my writing to now have a degree in professional writing. Kutztown University exposed me to many different styles of writing which I can now use successfully in a given circumstance. I am always up for the challenge when given a new way of ap-proaching writing such as in Travel Writing, Sports Writing, and Technical Writing. With these classes among many others, I have developed my writing abilities to a profes-sional level in the working world.

This portfolio will showcase my best work during my time in the professional writing pro-gram at Kutztown University. I have also included some of my best writing samples dur-ing my internship at Saint Katherine of Siena Grade School located in Philadelphia, PA.

The pieces of writing shown in this portfolio will show the world that I can make the tran-sition from a student with a dream to a successful writer in a working school environ-ment. I feel much gratitude for all of the professors and faculty members at Kutztown University who helped guide me during my journey of becoming an aspiring writer.

Internship Work

During the summer of 2014, I was given the opportunity to intern in a school environment at Saint Katherine of Siena in Philadelphia, Pennsylva-nia. The school has over 7,000 alumni and takes pride in teaching Catholic values to everyone in the community.

The first work I would like to present is the Parent/Student handbook for the 2016-2017 school year that I wrote during the course of my internship. The Parent/Student handbook had not been updated since the 2012-2013 school year, so the principal and advancement director decided it was time to update it. When designing the new document, I found it to be most chal-lenging when I was unsure of current school policies to incorporate in the handbook and no faculty member was around to clarify any questions I had. The target audience of the Parent/Student handbook are families who belong to the school as well as potential families who may consider en-rolling their child(ren) to the school in the near future. Parents and guardians need to feel comfortable about how the school is run on a day to day basis and giving them a set of rules and regulations is the best way to handle that. A PDF of the handbook was also added to the school’s web-site, which I redesigned over the summer as well. This example of my in-ternship work shows my ability to design a longer document which readers can feel comfortable reading all at once or skipping ahead to an area they may have a question about.

Internship Work

The next work I would like to present is a parent/student agreement form for the Saint Katherine of Siena School’s Resource Room. This assignment was given to me by Sister Ann Mark, the faculty member in charge of the students in the special needs program. She teaches students who need ex-tra help in certain subjects and thought it would be a good idea to create an agreement form between the parent, student and herself. The agreement also gives her an idea of what to expect from her students and what their particular interests may be. The target audience for this piece of writing is for any parent/guardian and student who may be contemplating joining the resource room program. For this assignment, I had to work closely with her and put onto paper in an easy design for parents/guardians and grade school students to understand and also edit an early version of the docu-ment she had given to me. This example of internship work shows how well I can design a document just through simple directions and ideas. It also demonstrates how well I can work with others under pressure when a cer-tain task is brought to my attention and needs to be accomplished rather quickly.

Internship Work

The final work I would like to present is the Photo Release Form I created for the 2016-2017 academic school year at Saint Katherine of Siena School. Saint Katherine of Siena School is always uploading pictures of their students to their Facebook and Twitter page as well as hanging stu-dents pictures up around the school. Some parents, however, do not feel comfortable with their child’s picture being uploaded to the internet for a va-riety of reasons so signing this form one way or the other is a good indica-tion for the school. The target audience for this piece of writing is for par-ents/guardians of children enrolled in Saint Katherine of Siena School whether they are concerned with their child’s picture on the internet or are indifferent to the idea. This document shows my ability to fact check the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s policy on a photo release form and craft a document into a companies own piece of writing. It also demonstrates how well I can solve problems because we did not have any forms on record from previous years, so I reached out to other schools in the area and they showed me drafts of their photo release forms for reference.

Professional Writing Work

My professional writing journey at Kutztown University was a long one, but I crafted a variety of skills along the way. With the help of many professors and students, I have been able to showcase different works of writing from my time at Kutztown University.

The first example of professional writing I would like to present is a Travel Feature I wrote in the Spring of 2016 for WRI 325: Travel Writing. For this assignment, I had to write about a trip I had taken in first person, but relay the details to my audience as if they were also on the trip with me. In the fall of 2015, I went to the annual Mushroom Festival in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. My roommate of three years had always told me how his hometown was the mushroom capital of the world, so I felt I needed to check it out for myself. The target audience for this article is for people in the Pennsylvania area who have heard of the Mushroom Festival, but want a better idea of what they could experience during the event. The audience could also include people of Kennett Square who want to know what an outsider may think of their thirty year festival. The only major revision I was asked to make was the lead of my story. Since my story centered around a cash crop, my professor wanted me to talk directly how the town celebrates this product instead of dancing around the topic. This piece demonstrates my ability to write about an event and describe it to an audience that may not have a clue what could go on at something like a Mushroom Festival and my words are what is the deciding factor in having them try next year’s festival.

47

Kennett Square’s 30th Annual Mushroom Festival

Most people in the United States are unaware of where the food inside their

pantry comes from. Even if we had an idea, it would be very rare to see us celebrate the

history of a food grown in our town. For the people who live in Kennett Square, also

known as the mushroom capital of the world, this concept has taken place in their town

over the last thirty years. The small town in Chester County, Pennsylvania grows

roughly 65 percent of the mushrooms consumed in the United States.

Less than 7,000 people reside in Kennett Square, which makes it remarkable

that they are able to provide the rest of the nation with its own cash crop. In 1986, a few

mushroom farmers and enthusiasts came together to host their first festival which only

lasted two blocks on the main street of town. The word spread rapidly around the

neighboring counties about this mushroom festival and was soon able to generate

48

thousands of tourists. To keep the festival unique and friendly to people of all ages,

residents of the town came together to develop fun activities for children such as jungle

gyms, face paints, and interactive games provided by volunteers. Adults experienced

the festival to a much different extent. Vendors filled each side of the street with many

mushroom based products ready to sell to curious tourists. Food stations were located

on just about every street corner selling a wide variety of food that can range from

normal festival foods like cheeseburgers and funnel cake or something more festival

based like deep fried mushrooms in a cup.

Even many of the local shops joined in on the festival fun. They welcome many

tourists inside their shops with discounts to entice them to shop in their stores. Some of

them even set up stands out on the middle of the festival in hopes of creating more

revenue for their store. Just in last year’s two day events at the mushroom festival, the

city generated over $80,000 in profits. Since 2000, the city has profited over $700,000

from the mushroom festival.

Early on a Sunday morning in early September, I embarked on my first

mushroom festival experience. The drive alone was about an hour and a half from my

hometown of Philadelphia. Upon arrival, one would think they’re looking to find parking

for the Super Bowl with the amount of traffic in the small side streets of the city. After

getting out of the car, a rotted mushroom stench fills the air from the neighboring

factories that surround the city. It may take some getting used to, but is tolerable after a

few minutes of breathing it in.

The city itself isn’t much of a sight itself. It wreaks of rural farmland Pennsylvania

with all of the open fields and animals such as horses and cows who roam in the grass.

Even with all the open farmland, many Kennett Square residents are of the upperclass

49

simply because of all the land they own. There are also very few chain restaurants and

convenient stores in the area which makes sense since they rely so heavily on the

profits of the festival. One local even told me they must drive twenty minutes to the

nearest Walmart and movie theatre, which many people from larger city would just fine

absurd.

Preteens work the lemonade stand like set-up to charge tourists the three dollar

entry fee to get into the festival. After receiving the bracelet that closely resembles the

elastic Livestrong bracelets from the early 2000’s, I entered the 30th annual Mushroom

Festival. To my surprise, the streets were filled with what seemed like hundreds of

thousands of tourists on the tiny streets of Kennett Square. The festival went on for over

a mile, but I couldn’t see more than five feet ahead of me without reading the back of

someone’s shirt. I had to take each step with caution so that I would not step on the

back of someone’s feet or bump into them with my shoulder.

Overwhelmed is an understatement when it comes to the amount of different

types of mushrooms served throughout the course of the day. White mushrooms,

portabella mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, and even fried mushrooms are among

dozens of mushrooms served at each concession stand. The most shocking event I

came across during the festival had to be the mushroom eating contest. I could barely

stomach eating a few fried portabella mushrooms while walking around, but eating them

competitively seemed a bit much to me. Last year’s winner, Molly Schuyler, consumed

11 pounds of fried breaded mushrooms in under eight minutes. First place won her

$800 and a mushroom shaped trophy.

While continuing to explore, I noticed the amount of merchandising the festival

feeds off of. Countless tents also stand out with every street I pass and inside are

50

mushroom shaped hats and t-shirts with mushroom festival logos on them. I couldn’t

see many tourists stopping by to pick up a shirt, but many kids were running around

with those mushroom shaped hats on. Besides those tents, many of the vendors set up

seemed like they were part of an organized garage sale selling their own homemade

products. Every stand had its own purpose and it stood out differently from the one

before it.

The most drastic stands I remember walking passed were an elderly man giving

away mushroom flavored spices and oils in sample shot glasses. I can’t recall a time

that I gagged in public then when I tried liquid mushrooms mixed in with bacon. The

very next stand less than ten feet away was selling chocolate covered bananas for a

dollar. It sounded like an interesting food choice, but most people seemed to regret that

first bite. The banana must have been sitting in a freezer for more than half the day

before I got my hands on it, so when I did take that first bite I immediately felt a brain

freezing sensation throughout my entire mouth. As I walked away from that stand with

disappointment, I felt a drop of rain fall on my face as the sky began to darken. People

began to panic and so ended the 30th Annual Kennett Square Mushroom Festival.

It was truly a fascinating sight to see so many people gathered in such a small

town for a celebration of one cash crop. I thought in that moment that more towns would

be more closely rooted together if they had these little celebrations at least once a year.

Maybe I would enjoy my neighborhood better if I was involved in such a closely rooted

festival.

Professional Writing Work

The second piece of writing I would like to present is a gamer guide for beating the All-Star Mode in Super Smash Brothers on the Wii U in the Spring of 2016 for WRI 220: Technical Writing. For this assignment, we had to find a set of directions/guide that could be improved or if it did not exist then we could create one ourselves. I found a guide to assist in beating the game, but it was black and white text for thirty pages with very few line breaks. Our professor constantly stressed how important document design is for our audience, which is why I included many different colors and im-ages to make the document much more appealing to the reader’s eye. The target audience for this document is people of all ages who have played Super Smash Brothers on the Wii U, or wish to play in the near future. I de-signed the document so people of all ages could understand the language being spoken throughout the guide. However, the game is very popular across the world, so this guide is mostly for people who play in the United States and neighboring countries. There were also no revisions that need-ed to be made from my professor. This example shows my ability to design documents appealing to a large audience and create a step by step guide that can be easily followed by people interested in the topic.

Game Background

Super Smash Brothers has been one of Nintendo’s most popular games since the turn of the millennium. The most recent version of the game for the Wii U became the fastest selling game for the Wii U in the United States. If you’re a fan of Nintendo characters fighting each other to the death than this is the game for you!

What Is All Star Mode?

In All Star Mode, you select one of the 58 playable characters and fight against every character in the game’s roster over the course of seven stages. Your character is given only one life to last through the entire mode and the damage you take in each stage carries over to the next. After completing each stage, you are placed in a peaceful stage that allows you to rest before your next fight. In this area, you are given four items to heal yourself: One heart containers that will heal your damage percentage back to zero, two Maxim Tomato that reduces your damage percentage by fifty percent, and one Fairy Bottle that reduces your damage percentage by one hundred percent only if you’re damage percentage is over one hundred percent. It is crucial that you space out the items between each level since you only have one life.

55

Controller Layout

You’re probably noticing that the controller for the game looks the same as the Nintendo Gamecube controller. Well that assumption is correct! The Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U allows you to use your old Gamecube controllers to play this game as long as you have the adaptor that comes with it.

Each character in the game follows the same basic rules for attacks but the strength and abilities varies among each character.

• To move across the screen with your character, use the gray control stick on the left handle of the controller.

• There are several ways to effectively jump in the game. Pressing the silver X and Y buttons repeatedly will allow your character to jump multiple times to attack others in the air or jump back onto the stage. Another way is to tap up multiple times on the control stick.

• To effectively block other characters attack, you must activate your shield. To activate this shield, you must hold down the left trigger, right trigger, or the navy blue Z button. The only con associated with this shield is if you hold it down for more than a few seconds, your shield bubble will pop and leave you stunned for a free attack from your opponent.

• Each character can grab and throw their opponent in different directions depending on their abilities. To throw an opponent, grab and hold the Z button while next to an opposing character and move your control stick to the left, right, up, or down.

56

• Characters also have their own special moves that were taken straight from their previousgames. For instance, Holding down B with Bowser will make him breathe fire on hisopponents. You can also perform a variety of other attacks using a combination of the Bbutton and the control stick.

• The most basic attacks characters can use in the game are derived from the large green Abutton. Tapping the A button will provide your character with a series of low damage attacks. To perform stronger attacks with the A button, you must use the control stick in the same way asthe B button.

• Finally, to taunt your opponents after throwing them off of the stage, touch any directionon the D pad for a showboat from your character.

Character Selection

The image above is the character selection screen after you select all star mode from the main menu. Each character has their own unique set of skills and abilities that will help you beat each boss on the way achieving All Star Mode.

Along with selecting a character to play with, you must also select the difficulty in which you want to play on. The three modes to select from are:

• Easy• Normal• Hard

Your experience level in the game will determine the setting that you choose to take on the All Star Mode.

57

Top 5 Characters To Use For Beginners

If you’re new to the game and aren’t sure who to select, I have compiled a short list of characters who work well for beginning players. Other gaming experts may not agree with this list, but these are the five I found to be most useful when I started out this playing this game

5. ROSALINA AND LUMA

To start the list, we have Rosalina and Luma from Super Mario Galaxy. Her moves are quite simple, but what really makes her great for

beginners is her sidekick Luma. If you find yourself in a jam of any kind, the little star like creature will come to your aid if it looks like your

enemies are taking it to you pretty hard.

58

4. CAPTAIN FALCON

Captain Falcon has been around since the Nintendo 64 version of the game and may be up there for the fastest character on foot in the game.

Simply pressing the B button next to an opponent with his “Falcon Punch” will do a great deal of damage to any opponent. His moves are simple

enough for first timers to get their feet wet in the game.

59

3. PIKACHU

Pikachu may look small but don’t let it fool you. His quickness and electricity make him unique to most characters and his moves are easy to learn for beginners. His down and B combo move has been around since his introduction to the series in the Nintendo 64 version of the game and

still does a great deal of damage to opponents today.

60

2. MARIO

Everyone knows Mario had to be on this list. He’s been the face of Nintendo for over thirty years now. Mario is well known as the most well-

rounded player in the game and most of his moves create the same steady amount of damage. Mario is the best option for someone who has

never picked up the game and wants to learn the basics.

61

1.CLOUD

Finally, we’ve reached the end of the list! Cloud packs the most powerful punch of all the characters on this list and even has a quickness that it is

appealing for someone just starting out in the game. Once you get a good feel for him after a couple rounds, you can use his signature move

“Finishing Touch” that will almost always instantly kill your opponent if they have taken the slightest bit of damage.

62

Top 5 characters to use for All Star ModeSince damage carries over from level to level in All Star Mode, you’re going to need characters who can take a decent amount of damage without flying off the stage. In this list of characters, you will notice most of them will be heavier because they are much better at holding down large amounts of damage.

1. LITTLE MAC

Arguably of course, Little Mac is the best option for you to use during the All Star Mode. What makes him stand out from the rest during the All Star Mode is the fact that a lot of times when he is hit by an opponent, he won’t

move at all which is crucial when facing several opponents at once. You cannot go wrong with selecting him to beat the game’s All Star Mode!

2. CHARIZARD

Charizard is the most powerful of all the Pokemon available to use in the game. Most of his attacks do large amounts of damage, but most notably is his Flare Blitz. Use this move by hitting the over and B button combo

and it will knock most enemies of the stage with little amounts of damage. The only warning with this move is to watch how often you use it because

it reflects damage back at Charizard.

64

3. King Dedede

King Dedede is a massive force to be reckoned with no matter what mode you play. Although in All Star Mode, his large hammer does a great deal of damage to any enemy that stands in his way. Another great feature of King

Dedede is his ability jump back onto the stage as if he has a smaller characters body.

65

4. CORRIN

Corrin is another well rounded character for her size and will work well in All Star Mode more for his counters than his strength. She is able to

counter other opponents strongest attacks and leave them stunned for several seconds. This works well when you have half a dozen characters

charging at you at the same time.

66

5. LINK

If I’m being honest, I only put Link on this list because he’s my favorite character in the game and I’ve been using him since the first version of the

game was released. What makes him great to use in this mode is his up and B combo attack which has his sword move in a spinning motion. He is able to attack multiple enemies at once with this which works great for All

Star Mode.

Each Stages’ Specifics

As I stated earlier, there are seven stages you must complete with only one life to do it. Each stage differs with the amount of characters you will face. The characters you face also go in a descending order in which they were released over the years. The stage you face opponents in will be randomized to fit a stage someone you fight against.

Stage One: (Characters: Present day-2007)

The following nine characters appear in the first stage:

• Robin• Lucina• Corrin• Dark Pit• Shulk• Bayonetta• Wii Fit Trainer• Rosalina and Luma• Greninja

These characters are the newest the Nintendo world has to offer. This also means that these are some of the most complex characters to face in the game. I would recommend holding off using one of your healing items if possible. If you can pass this stage with little damage taken, then you put yourself in a good position to complete the All star mode.

Stage Two: (Characters: 2006-2001)

The following nine characters appear in the second stage:

• Lucario• Villager• Zero Suit Samus• Toon Link• Olimar• Roy • Bowser Jr.• Ike• Lucas

These characters were predominant in the Gamecube era of Nintendo. They are mostly smaller characters and shouldn’t cause much of a problem as it is one of the easier of the seven stages. After this stage would be a good time to use a Maxim Tomato to heal yourself.

68

Stage Three: (Characters: 1993-1998)

The following nine characters appear in the third stage:

• Ganondorf• Sheik• Jigglypuff• Charizard• Pikachu• Mewtwo• Diddy Kong• Ness• Cloud

This group of characters were mostly a part of the Nintendo 64 era of Nintendo. During that era we saw the beginning of Pokemon that still reigns today and even additions to the Legend of Zelda saga. This stage may be a bit more challenging with larger characters such as Charizard and Cloud. I recommend going out of your way to take them out first since they can cause the most damage of the nine characters you’re facing.

Stage Four: (Characters: 1993-1991

The following seven characters appear in the fourth stage:• Meta Knight• Falco• Fox• Wario• King Dedede• Kirby• Sonic

These characters derived right after the Super Nintendo released world wide in 1990. Almost half of these characters were taken from the many Kirby games that started with the original Gameboy. Other than King Dedede, all of the characters are small and quick. The best way to get through this level is to separate Dedede from the other characters and take them out first because he will take up much of your time. Now would be another good instance where you might want to consider using another healing item depending on your damage status.

69

Stage Five: (Characters: 1990-1986)

The following eight characters appear in the fifth stage:

• Captain Falcon• Yoshi• Dr. Mario• Marth• Megaman• Palutena• Pit• Ryu

This group of characters were a part of the end of the original Nintendo era and the original Gameboy. Ryu, Megaman, and Pit are going to lead the way of characters to stand in your way in this stage. It will be incredibly tough to knock them out while they’re together, so you should attempt to separate them and try to fight them one on one.Coming down the final stretch, you may want to use your Fairy Bottle if you are over 100% damage at this point in the game. You do not want to come this far in the game just to lose and have to start over.

Stage Six: (Characters: 1986-1984)

The following seven characters appear in the sixth stage:

• Samus• Zelda• Link• Bowser• Peach• Rob• Duck Hunt

Now we are starting unveil the original cast of Nintendo icons. Link and Zelda appeared from The Legend of Zelda at this time along with Peach and Bowser from the Super Mario series. This stage is more mental than anything else you will encounter. By now, you’re thinking about only being one stage away from completing the All Star Mode and next time you blink, the game is over. These characters will be even tougher than the last stage. Rob, Link, and Bowser will be overly aggressive as soon as the match starts, so try and stay away from them as long as you can. Take down the smaller characters and you should be fine. After completing this stage, use all items you have left! This is your last chance to heal yourself before the final stage, so take advantage!

70

Stage Seven: (Characters: 1984-1980)

The following six characters appear in the seventh stage:

• Mario• Luigi• Pac Man• Mr. Game and Watch• Donkey Kong• Little Mac

These six characters are the first that Nintendo has offered to the public and you’re facing them in the final stage of All Star Mode. The one thing that will surprise you most about the final stage is that it isn’t overly difficult. These characters are not meant to challenge you as much as the other levels. What is supposed to affect you most at this point in the game is the amount of damage you’ve taken and the final six will hope to take advantage. To avoid this, use your shield as much as possible and only expose yourself when you can guarantee a hit on your opponent. Donkey Kong and Little Mac can be dangerous with their big hit capability, so get rid of them quick and you should be in good shape to finish the game strong.

ConclusionIf you follow this guide carefully, you will end up successful in completing the All Star Mode in Super Smash Brother for the Wii U.

Professional Writing Work

The final piece of professional writing work I would like to present is a sports prediction I wrote in the Spring of 2016 For WRI 318: Sports Writing and Reporting. For this assignment, I had to make a 300 word sports pre-diction based off of professional or collegiate sports within the next year and explain my reasoning through facts. Since I am from Philadelphia, I chose to write about the Philadelphia 76ers and why I believe they went with a horrendous strategy in regard to rebuilding the franchise. I stated that they would lose out on the number one overall 2016 NBA draft pick. The target audience for this assignment was anyone who enjoys Phil-adelphia sports, NBA discussion, and sports in general. Kutztown Universi-ty students were also part of the target audience because the article fea-tured in the February edition of the Keystone newspaper. My professor en-couraged me to revise my first draft of the prediction because many of my thoughts were scattered across the page when I should have been more direct. My final draft consisted of simple facts and clear information which read much better as a whole instead of trying to comprehend bits and pieces of information that did not connect. This example shows my ability to make a bold opinion and then back it up with facts and have all of the in-formation connect.
