Jesus’ attention had been focussed on offering fellowship to the poor, the marginalised, the outcasts and it was from these groups that he chose the people who were to be the leaders when He was no longer there. Jesus’ work now continues though us Christians—Christ followers—who, in the Mass and the Eucharist, eat and drink with Him after He has risen from the dead. For Christians, Easter is the matchless remedy for all forms of hopelessness. The Resurrection of Jesus is the basis for the deep trust that cultivates our faith and love. Easter is never over, Jesus lives on in all Christians; it is in us that His presence is in the world. Today we held our Rice Day and sold cups of rice for 50c at big lunch. Thank you to the students who brought along money to support Mini Vinnies and took time to think about those less fortunate than themselves. With the money raised today and from the good works we completed last year, Mini Vinnies would like to make a contribution to the overall fundraising efforts of the school for Project Compassion by donating an additional $500. This will be presented to Mrs Crowe at our final assembly tomorrow. We are continuing to sponsor our child through World Vision, George-Mikael who is from Indonesia. We have received updates from him including drawings and letters to thank us for our sponsorship. The Mini Vinnies Committee are working on a package of letters and drawings to send back to him. We would like to thank everyone for their continued and generous support of Mini Vinnies. We look forward to performing lots of “Good Works” throughout the year.

Greetings from the Year Five classroom! I hope you enjoy reading about what we have

been up to in Year Five this Term.

In English, the students have been working to improve their reading and comprehension skills

as well as building on their knowledge of different spelling rules. The focus text type for this

Term has been persuasive texts and the students have enjoyed choosing a position and

writing to persuade. Each Friday, the Year Five students have loved participating in buddy

reading with the students in the Year 1/2 class.

Maths this Term has seen the students concentrate specifically on working with six-digit

numbers, different multiplication strategies, elapsed time and decimal fractions.

In Religion, the students have focussed on communities of believers. They have looked at

Catholic communities and pioneers in our faith throughout history, concentrating specifically

on Saint Mary MacKillop and her life.

Geography has required the students to research about the countries in both Europe and

North America and evaluate the effects that the human and environmental characteristics

of these places have on each other.

In Science this Term the focus has been all about light. The students have enjoyed looking at

what things give us light, how light helps us to see, how light travels and

how far it travels, as well as what a shadow is. In doing so,

Year Five have participated in a range of

experiments and investigations.

The students have also been enjoying their

lessons in Physical Education with Mrs Hart,

Library with Mrs Bowman and Indonesian with

Mrs Maclean.

I wish everyone a

safe and restful

holiday,

Miss Rebekah Bowdler

EASTER REFLECTION

The story is told of a rabbi (a Jewish teacher) who gathered all his students together very early in the morning while it was still dark. He asked them: ‘How can you tell when the night has ended and the day has begun?’ One student answered: ‘Maybe it’s when you see an animal and you can tell whether it’s a sheep or a dog.’ ‘No,’ the rabbi said. A second student answered: ‘Maybe it’s when you are looking at a tree in the distance and you can tell whether it’s a fig tree or a peach tree.’ ‘No,’ said the rabbi. After a few more guesses the students demanded the answer. The rabbi replied: ‘It’s when you look on the face of any woman or man and see that she is your sister and he is your brother. If you cannot do this, no matter what time it is, it is still night.’

For John, as we will hear in his gospel this Easter weekend, Easter begins very early in the morning of the first day of the week while it is ‘still dark’. But he writes that ‘the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining’. But this is strictly on one condition: ‘Whoever loves a brother or sister,’ he says, ‘lives in the light.’

So we celebrate Christs resurrection this Sunday by rising from darkness ourselves. To truly see Christs light in others and to give it opportunity to shine from within ourselves. The Risen Lord, is asking us to ‘walk always as children of the light’, following in his footsteps, living by his message of love. (Taken from Fr Brian Gleeson's Easter Reflections http://www.passionistshobart.org.au/)

We pray our students and families enjoy a very Happy Easter with loved ones!

God Bless,

Mrs Deonne Crowe

Year Six Curriculum Corner

It’s unbelievable how quickly this term has flown. Year Six have been working extremely hard all term and particularly with their assessment over recent weeks. Religion The students have been working on understanding the many ways faith is lived out by believers past and present to shape a socially just world. They have also participated in daily prayer and meditation exercises with much respect and enthusiasm. Science Our unit this term is ‘Marvellous Microorganisms’. The students have investigated our school grounds for any microorganisms they could find. Predicted and discussed the role of yeast in bread and what causes mould and bacteria. Geography This term students have discovered the wonders of Asia! Each student chose an Asian country to research and extend their knowledge of a country from another continent. This included detailed mapping skills.

Visitors to our Classroom Father Gonzo was invited to speak to Year Six about his role as a priest in our parish. The students were delighted to ask questions about his life as a priest. Father shared stories about where he grew up and past experiences. We hope to have Father visit our class on a regular basis throughout the year.

Mr Wells was invited to speak to our class after the students heard that he was a keen scuba diver! Our class was fascinated when Mr Wells shared his scuba diving experiences. We passed around a variety of equipment that he wears when diving. Mr Wells concluded his visit with a video of him

scuba diving at various places in Australia (which included sharks swimming nearby!!). Easter Raffle Year Six have raised over $700 for our Sydney / Canberra trip after successfully selling tickets over the last two weeks. Thank you for all the lovely donations and to those who have bought tickets. The raffle will be drawn this Thursday at Assembly. Well done Year Six! I would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and holy Easter. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in Term 2. Cecilia Guymer

Mini Vinnies Term One Report

The term started off with Mini Vinnies position elec-tions taking place.

Congratulations to the following students who were elected in 2016.

On Saturday 12th March we volunteered our time to assist the Parish with their St Patrick’s Day Celebrations and Fundraising event. We ran stalls during the afternoon such as the Tombola stall, ice-blocks, face painting and colouring in table. We would really like the thank all of the families who donated bottles and goods for the Tombola stall. Without your help our stall would not have been such a success… THANKYOU!! Through our act of “Good Works” on the afternoon we were able to raise $204 for the Parish. It was a fun afternoon and we really enjoyed helping out.

Reflection on the Gospel - The journey of Jesus to the Cross.

We see Jesus in all humility and obedience choosing to surrender himself for the good of all creation. In his

journey he exemplifies God’s greatest gift: absolute love and mercy. In our culture, humility, obedience

and surrender are almost scorned as an affront to our independence and sense of self-mastery. It is easy to

lose sight of the deepest meaning of the terms and most profound truths contained within them, which

draw us closer and closer to God. In walking the path he did, Jesus abandoned himself completely into

God’s loving care and mercy. He shows us how to fall into the arms of God, trusting in God’s absolute

goodness. During this final week of Lent, are we willing to abandon ourselves into the loving arms of God

with trust and hope of resurrection?

“he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

even death on a cross.

Because of this God greatly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name that is

above every name”

Philippians 2:8-9
