On October 10, at Hillcrest Park, the Young Professionals of Clovis hosted “Rocktoberfest.” This was a fundraiser event held at 3 p.m. with live music, good food, cold beer and a rockin’ good time! The morning kicked off at 9 am with the first annual “Walk/Run to Rock a Cure!” 5K presented by Women’s Medical Center, followed by a Poker Run hosted by High Plains Harley Davidson and wrapping with a day full of fun with Rocktoberfest in the park - all with proceeds benefiting the Plains Regional Medical Center Breast Cancer Initiative.

Live music from bands Slick Reynolds, The ARQ, and Bad Reputation began at 3 pm that afternoon, and ran throughout the afternoon and into the evening at Hillcrest Park. Attendees enjoyed food from local vendors such as Leal’s Mexican Restaurant and Paradise Market, a beer garden area sponsored by Sam Adams & Dos Equis in partnership with Kelley’s Bar & Grill, as well as a silent auction with items donated by local Clovis businesses and individuals. The event attracted over 700 participants, with a rockin’ good time had by all who partook in the first annual Rocktoberfest!

On Wednesday, November 4th, more than 70 high school students from surrounding communities will gather for a Regional Youth Engagement Day, to be held from 8:30am-1:30pm in the Business Enterprise Center Board Room of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce, located at 105 E. Grand Avenue in Clovis, New Mexico. The event is sponsored by Ogallala Commons (www.ogallalacommons.org) and its local partners: Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Clovis Industrial Development Corporation, and New Mexico Small Business Development Center at Clovis Community College. “The purpose of the event is to engage youth in their postsecondary career options, and to inspire them to develop their entrepreneurial mindset, which will help them in whatever path they pursue,” according to Darryl Birkenfeld, Director of Ogallala Commons. “Most importantly, we will share this message with students: We want them to know that after they finish their educational programs, their communities and home regions would like them to come back-to live, work, and raise their families. We will introduce students to careers that can create pathways that can bring them back, if and when they choose.”

The Youth Engagement Day will begin at 8:30am with icebreakers and an opening session, followed by facilitated small group discussion on “Finding Your E-Dream.” An entrepreneur panel will present lessons learned from their journeys, and at 10am, there will be a Speed Career Exploration session with 6 representatives of promising career fields in the region. After a break, student groups will visit 8 businesses in downtown Clovis, to gain hands-on learning about how key businesses are established and operated in a successful manner. During the lunch session, each small group will give a report. In the wrap-up session, students will learn about next steps such the Youth Entrepreneur Fair and potential summer internships. Lastly, each student will also complete a brief survey that will help them to learn more about necessary steps for postsecondary success. The Youth Engagement Day is open to selected high school students from Curry and Roosevelt counties. For More Information: Contact Sandra Taylor-Sawyer at 575-769-4136 or [email protected]
