FAITH FORMATION
FEAST OF ST. MARTHA Patron of Cooks, Waiters, Homemakers
WEDNESDAY, JULY 29
Martha was the sister of Mary and Lazarus. They lived in the little town of Bethany near Jerusalem. They were dear friends of Jesus, and He often came to visit them. One day, she was preparing a meal for Jesus and his disciples. She realized that the task would be easier if her sister would help. She watched Mary sitting quietly at Jesus' feet, listening to him. "Lord, tell my sister to help me,"
Martha suggested. Jesus was very pleased with Martha's loving service. However, he wanted her to know that listening to God's Word and praying is even more important. So he said gently, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious about many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part." St. Martha's great faith in Jesus was seen when her brother Lazarus died. As soon as she heard that Jesus was coming to Bethany, Martha went to meet him. She trusted Jesus and said: "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Then Jesus told her that Lazarus would rise. He said, "whoever believes in me, even if he dies shall live…. Do you believe this?" And Martha answered, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” Jesus worked a great miracle and raised Lazarus from the dead. Later, Jesus came again to have supper with Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Martha served them at table as always. This time, though, Martha had a much more loving attitude. She served with a joyful heart. Martha followed Jesus until the time of his crucifixion. It was then believed that Martha, Mary and Lazarus left Judea and went to France where she died in 84AD.

FEAST OF ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA Patron of the Society of Jesus,
Soldiers, Education and Retreats FRIDAY, JULY 31
St. Ignatius Loyola was born in 1491, one of 13 children of a family of minor nobility in northern Spain. As a young man Ignatius Loyola was inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood and dreamed of doing great deeds. But in 1521 Ignatius was gravely wounded in a battle with the French. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a conversion. Reading the lives of
Jesus and the saints made Ignatius happy and aroused desires to do great things. Ignatius realized that these feelings were clues to God’s direction for him. Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art of spiritual direction. He collected his insights, prayers, and suggestions in his book the Spiritual Exercises, one of the most influential books on the spiritual life ever written. With a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as “contemplatives in action.” This also describes the many Christians who have been touched by Ignatian spirituality. Ignatius' passed away on July 31, 1556, at the age of 64. He was beatified by Pope Paul V on July 27, 1609 and canonized on March 12, 1622. The Society of Jesus found its niche in education. Before Ignatius died in 1556, his order established 35 schools and boasted 1,000 members. The order was responsible for much of the work of stopping the spread of the Protestant Reformation. The Society advocated the use of reason to persuade others and combat heresy. Today, the Society of Jesus is known for its work in educating the youth around the world. Several universities have been founded in the name of Ignatius and in the traditional Jesuit spirit. The Jesuits also perform many other important works around the globe.
On the day after his election on March 13, 2013, Pope Francis knelt in prayer before an icon of Mary and the child Jesus at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, and then prayed at the Basilica’s chapel where Saint Ignatius of Loyola celebrated his first Mass in 1538. In praying there, the first Pope from the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, honored his spiritual father, the founder of his religious order.
FAITH FORMATION
ST. ALPHONSUS LIGUORI Patron of Confessors, Moral Theologians,
and Lay Apostolate SATURDAY, AUGUST 1
St. Alphonsus Liguori was born of nobility in 1696 near Naples, Italy. Alphonsus was extremely well-educated and received his law degree at age 16. He resigned from a brilliant career as a lawyer
in 1723 when he lost a case because he overlooked a small, but important, piece of evidence. He entered the seminary and was ordained three years later in 1726. He soon became a sought-after preacher and confessor in Naples. His so sermons were simple that they appealed to all people, both learned and unlearned. In 1732, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, or the Redemptorists, at Scala. His greatest sorrow came toward the end of his life. The Redemptorists, precariously continuing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, had difficulty in getting their Rule approved by the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus acceded to the condition that they possess no property in common, but with the connivance of a high Redemptorist official, a royal official changed the Rule. Alphonsus, old, crippled and with very bad sight, signed the document, unaware that he had been betrayed. The Redemptorists in the Papal States then put themselves under the pope, who withdrew those in Naples from the jurisdiction of Alphonsus. It was only after his death that the branches were united. In 1762, Pope Clement XIII made him Bishop of Sant’ Agata del Goti near Naples; he resigned in 1775 due to ill health. He died in 1787, and was canonized in 1839. In 1871, Alphonsus was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX. He is widely known for his contribution to moral theology; his famous book, “Moral Theology”, was published in 1748. Today, the Redemptorists have a special charism within the Church to preach the Gospel to the abandoned poor.
In 1973, Joseph W. Tobin professed vows as a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists; in 1978, he was ordained to the priesthood. On Jan. 23, 2017, Cardinal Tobin, currently the Archbishop of Newark, celebrated Mass at the Basilica of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, where remains of the founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, are venerated.
MASS IN SPANISH SUNDAY, AUGUST 2,7PM DOMINGO, 2 DE AGOSTO
PRAYER TO OUR MOTHER, MARY, TO OVERCOME RACISM
Mary, friend and mother to all,
through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself
to every human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other.
We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times when
we have failed to love and respect one another. We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism
and to build a just society. We ask for your help in following your Son,
so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love
that respects the dignity of each person. Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus
warms our hearts: pray for us. Amen.
LAUDATO SI’ 5TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR! Great Summer Reading! It was on May 24, 2015, that Pope Francis signed his landmark encyclical, “‘Laudato Si’: On the Care for Our Common Home.” Pope Francis has designated this year through May 24, 2021 as a special time for discussion. “In these times of the pandemic, in which we are more aware of the importance of care for our common home,” he said, “I hope that all the common reflection and commitment may help to create and strengthen constructive attitudes for the care of creation.” We will have a discussion group on it as soon as we are allowed to meet again. Make your reading notes!

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”
In the three parables in the Gospel of Matthew today, what motivates the actions of the person, merchant, and fishermen is that they have already come upon the extreme good that they seek: the treasure in the field, the pearl of great price, the catch of fish. So, it is with us. We have already come upon the extreme good that we spend our lives seeking: The Kingdom of Heaven. The challenge is to give our all to attain it!
In the First Reading from Wisdom, the wisdom that Solomon requested, and for which he is famous, is one of the most valued virtues of the Old Testament tradition. Like Solomon, we must ask for wisdom so that we can recognize the great treasure of the kingdom of God when it appears.
Many of us today like to take chances on raffles, lotteries or even some fun times in Atlantic City or Las Vegas, even though the odds are truly against us. On the contrary, there is no “chance” involved in our spending our lives to receive the extreme good God offers us. We have already been given the greatest prize possible: The Kingdom of Heaven!
As the month of August will soon be upon us, let us remember this month is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the patroness of our Parish. Dates throughout this month that we can honor Mary in a very special way through our prayers, meditations, novenas, litanies, etc., along with the celebration of Mass include:
Thursday, August 13: 103rd Anniversary of the Fourth Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima Saturday, August 15: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Monday, August 17: New Feast Day for Our Lady of Knock – Queen of Ireland Saturday, August 22: Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Wednesday, August 26: Feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa – Queen of Poland
As this Pandemic continues throughout our country, hindering every part of our lives, I am so grateful to everyone in helping our Parish chip away at the mounted expenses from the past months. Our collections last weekend: $4,346. Maintenance/AC: $769.
Please remember you MUST wear a mask at all times while in Church except when you are receiving the Eucharist. When approaching the priest or Eucharist Minister, you should make a slight bow of the head, receive the host in your hand, step to the side, lift your mask and consume the host.
God Bless You. Have a healthy and safe summer week. Fr. Jacek
