Lodge Membership 210 And Growing! Johnson City - Where VOLUNTEERISM Is A Way of Life! My Dear Sister and Brother Elks; what a wonderful, "family", we are here at JC #2821! I just can’t say it enough, what a privilege and honor it is for me to be the ER of our awesome Lodge! We may be little, but we do GREAT, BIG things! You, my Elk family, make this job a true joy! Believe it or not, having such a wonderful Elk family makes one of my tasks as ER quite difficult. As most of you know, each month the ER must name one of our members as "Elk of the Month". We have so many outstanding members; I find selecting just one is quite difficult. Let me just give you an idea of the challenge I face in a month to find, just one, outstanding Elk: The Char and Dee team that faithfully clean and set-up the dining room EVERY Friday to create the warm friendly setting for our dinners; Dave Gardner who comes early EVERY Monday and Thursday to set-up for our card parties; Connie and Kathy our faithful Wednesday night card party hostesses; our cheery chicken flippers who are here bright and early on Sat BBQ days and their kitchen crew, our bakers for the BBQ’s and Friday dinners; our bartenders that come early and stay late to faithfully serve our thirsty family; Mary Ellen Jennison who shops diligently each week for supplies for the Lodge and the dinners teams; Alicia Beck who has put her creative talent to work to come up with the great fundraisers we’ve had; let’s not forget the ultimate faithfulness of Kim and Paul Reger who dedicate countless hours to reconcile the register each and every day their side jobs of setting traps, cleaning behind the fridge and stove and other tasks too many to mention; Steve and Sharon Flint and their dedication to having our Friday dinners covered, not to mention the one, or two they cook themselves; oh, then there’s Dennis Gazda who, when still sore from surgery, comes to pick up receipts, steam clams and who knows whatever else he found to take care of! Jerry Smith and his son (not yet an Elk) have spent many hours putting in our beautiful, new horseshoes pits in these unbelievably hot and humid days! What about Bill Bayliff who dedicates who knows how many hours on our monthly newsletter! These are just a few; my list could go on and on and on. To get a better picture, if you haven’t had a chance to glance at the "Volunteer Sign in Notebook", please do. This will give you a better idea of what I face each month. Please be assured, for me, no one goes unnoticed. I do not take my task to name the Elk of the Month lightly. This month I chose a member who is pretty much quiet, behind the scene kind of guy. He is one of our faithful, cheery chicken flippers. You ask for his help and he’s there. He loves the Elks and would do anything for our Lodge. It is my extreme pleasure to name Mike Bartosik as August Elk of the Month. Please be sure to congratulate him next time you see him around the Lodge. It’s a wonderful way to inform our “Lodge Community!” Joanne Kretzmer is an accomplished motorcycle enthusiast? She assists others in getting their motorcycle licenses! Paul and Kim Reger’s daughter donated several boxes of children’s books to support the Summer Read Program? Bill Maney’s daughter is associated with the show “Good Morning America”? Adam Gardner, Elinor and David’s son, won the Monday night league? Mark and Deb Prindle’s daughter, Tami Fortenbaugh is enrolled in a surgical technician program? Bill and Alicia’s, nephew, David Henderson, MD, completed his internship at UCLA Medical Center? Jerry Smith, has completed our horseshoe pits? Shaun and Dana Fedoris took a delayed honeymoon trip to some exotic island? These are just a few things heard “around our lodge”! Take a moment, drop in and you never know what you will hear! These are four year awards and the Elks National Foundation will award up to 250 $1000 per year Legacy Awards. The NYSEA contest is open to any student in the senior graduating class of a high school, or in any undergraduate class of an accredited college, whose parent is or was at the time of death, an Elk in good standing of a Lodge in New York State, and who is a citizen of the US and a resident within the jurisdiction of the Order. I would like to thank Deb Valenta, Bill Maney, Sharon Flint, Sue Walen,Christina Jennison and

Scott Dow for joining me at Watkins Glen over the weekend to work along with the Vestal Elk's. It was a tiring two days, but fun all the same. We are thinking about doing this on our own next year as a fund raiser. I do not at this time know what was made by our lodge as the accounting hasn't been done yet. A full report will follow next month. Thanks, Steve Flint

Thank you to all those who “Pitched In” to raise funds for our Christmas Charities! • Connie Carle was the driving force behind this event! She did an exceptional job organizing and coordinating

this wonderful afternoon! Thank you Connie for your exceptional efforts! Thank you to Connie’s “helpers” who ensured the success of the event! All food was donated to increase the donation dollars to the Christmas Funds!

• Char Maluchnik prepared her Chicken and Biscuits! During the 5 hours she “manned” the buffet and provided clean-up!

• Connie Carle formulated the rules and regulations for the tourney. She shared here amazing fruit compote, meatballs and cookies!

• Mike Bartosik provided set up help! • Jaye Neiss (Kathy and Doug’s daughter, Jack and Connie’s granddaughter) was our 50/50 seller and

scorekeeper! • Kathy Neiss – provided an amazing salad, set-up and moral support for this event! • Herb Flint - was our first barkeep and as always he kept everyone entertained. • Deb Valenta – came in the second ½ to bartend! She made it known how much she appreciated everyone’s

participation! We let her know how much we appreciated her coming in on a Sunday! • Gerri Jurkiw – assisting with food prep and moral support! • Alicia/Bill – We couldn’t think of any better group to celebrate our 40

th anniversary with! We provided

sausage and peppers and onions for the group! • Dee Kelley –for her amazing cole slaw and providing barkeep assistance!

Thank you to our players who came out to support this event! Jack and Dee Molyneau; Rita and Dino Christopher; Connie Kovach; Flo Winters (who donated $$$ from her 50/50 win);Joe Malchunik; Bill Maney; Dee Kelley (who donated her tip dollars) Ron Foster; Rich Palmer; Kathy Neiss; Connie Carle; Denise Costello; Jerry Smith; Bill and Alicia Beck; Gerri Jurkiw; Joanne Kretzmer; Audrey Lopresti; Lenore Healy; (JT) Jack Thompson; Douglas Smith; Leslie and Karen from Whitney Point; Dave N.; Mike; and Marie. During the course of the tourney we had a unique experience – all of sudden there was severe wind and rain…which led to thunder and lightning…..which hit a tree….which tore down the wires….which “turned out” the lights! We finished our tourney by “candlelight” and no air conditioning! Not a peep out of anyone, not a complaint was heard. This was certainly an appropriate way to end our evening. All of our participants and helpers banded together to ensure a Merry Christmas would be provided for those we have “adopted”. The candles on the tables spoke volumes. Father James Keller founder of a charitable organization The Christophers wrote….”A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle”. Thank you again to those who took the opportunity to light our “Christmas Candles”! Alicia your Community Activities Chairperson
