WELCOME, LET’S HAVE SOME fUn THIS SUMMER WITH SPORT & GAMES!

Following on from last years amazing summer of sport with the Olympics games, Charnwood Borough Council’s Sport & Active Recreation team is offering a range of exciting activities designed to keep everyone entertained over the school holiday and keep the Olympic Legacy alive. You can choose from Horse Riding, Fencing, Dance Workshops, Canoeing, Multi sports, Tae kwon-do, Climbing, Aerial trekking, Archery, trips to Snowdome & Megazone, Fishing, Badminton, Gymnastics and much more.

We have exciting courses on offer to keep you entertained all week long which are available at a number of venues across the borough. We strive to make our activities accessible for all. Children with a disability are welcomed and encouraged to take part in all activities. Carers and parents are welcome to attend sessions. IMPoRTANT INFoRMATIoN FoR ALL ACTIVITIESTransport Transport is available for some activities. These activities have the big yellow bus symbol next to them in the

brochure. Please indicate on your booking form if you want a space on the coach/mini-bus for any of these activities.

All transport leaves from the Charnwood Borough Council Offices, Southfields Road, Loughborough LE11 2TT.

Please note that for activities with transport the start and finish times indicated in the brochure are the times to and from the Charnwood Borough Council car park NoT the start time at the venue. If you choose to make your own travel arrangements please note that you must wait with your child until our staff arrive with the group on the coach/mini-bus.

Drinks For all activities please send your child/children with a drink as there is not always facility for this at all venues.

Staff All staff are trained and have undergone enhanced Criminal Record Bureau checks.

Clothing The weather during the summer holidays should be glorious sunshine, but it could also rain and be chilly. Please ensure that you/your child come dressed appropriately for the weather (sun hats, sun cream, jumpers, raincoats, wellies etc.)

Collecting from sessions We do not take responsibility for participants outside the hours of the session. DO NOT leave your children unaccompanied until the activity staff arrives. The staff at venues are NoT responsible for your children.

Please ensure that you complete the section on the booking form or advise when ringing to book if your child has permission to walk home alone from the session and will not be collected.

Refunds Policy/Session changes We will always endeavour to ensure that activity sessions operate as advertised in our activity brochures. However, we do reserve the right to cancel sessions due to circumstances beyond our control. In the event of a cancellation we will provide you with as much notice as possible. Should it be necessary for us to cancel an activity you will receive a full refund. Card payments will be refunded back to your card. If you have paid by cheque or cash and the value of the activity is less than £5 a credit note will be issued for use against future activities. However, if you would prefer a cash refund, this can be collected from our offices.

In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to change the format of the activity on the day. We will endeavour to inform parents/guardians/participants prior to the commencement of the session.

The booking of activities is considered to be a commitment to attend. Due to the large amount of daily bookings processed we are unable to alter a booking once confirmed. A refund will only be given in exceptional circumstances e.g. serious illness/accident.

AERIAL TREKKING BOOKING REQUIREDThis course provides a challenging activity 10 metres above the ground. Whilst attached to a safety cord, you will need to conjure up the courage to stride across the gap from the tower onto the course. With a little bit of balance, a smidgeon of confidence and a sprinkling of curiosity you can try the aerial trekking course. You never know, you could be a natural born aerial trekker!Please remember: Close-fitting clothing is recommended, particularly on the upper body and arms. The day will consist of all participants taking part in fun warm up games and then trying different athletics events throughout the day. These will include long jump, javelin, hammer, sprinting, middle distance and finally coming together to finish with team games and relays. You don’t have to be an athlete to come along to this. BADMINTON BOOKING REQUIREDWe have an exciting opportunity to work in conjunction with the local sports club – Fox Badminton to provide you with a taster of this popular Olympic sport. Fox Badminton Club, has been running in Shepshed for around 28 Years, they are a none competitive Club and a wide range of ages enjoy the Game and fellowship of Badminton along with the exercise that goes with it. They play all year round, every Monday from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM except on Bank Holidays. Come along and have a go under the guidance of the coaches. CANOEING AT LEICESTER OUTDOOR PURSUITS CENTRE BOOKING REQUIREDWe are delighted to offer this great open water session in Canadian canoes (open canoes not kayaks), all equipment is provided including buoyancy aids. Come along and have a go under the supervision of a qualified instructor teaching you skills and techniques. It’s great fun and not to be missed! Children must be capable of swimming at least 50m and be confident in deep water. The canoeists will travel a short distance along the River Soar and return to the centre. Please dress appropriately for the weather (lightweight clothing and footwear – no jeans/denim). Bring waterproof clothing and a full change of clothes including a towel, just in case!

It can be used as a starting point for people wishing to take up climbing and mountaineering. CYCLING BOOKING REQUIRED ONLINEBritish Cycling’s Sky Ride Local rides are free, fun guided bike rides that offer a great way of getting out and exploring the local area with friends and family. The rides are guided by friendly British Cycling Ride Leaders along scenic planned routes. Rides are taking place every Sunday from 23rd June, on a variety of routes with ride titles including the ‘Great Central Railway and Ride’, ‘Soar along to Pillings Lock’ and ‘Discover Loughborough’. Where the age range is ‘any’, children under 5 do not have to book and must be in a BSA approved child seat, trailer or tag-a-long. On the 11th August there is also a family cycling day at Loughborough University with activities for the whole family and rides on the local cycle routes.

GEOCACHING BOOKING REQUIREDGeocaching is often described as a “game of hi-tech hide and seek”. It is similar to orienteering, waymarking and treasure hunting. You will use GPS (Global Positioning Systems) provided by the Council to find the hidden ‘caches’ (container). Its great fun for all ages, come and give it a go. We will be working in small groups or families. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and bring a drink. Under 8s must be accompanied by an adult (Aged, 16 Years+).


GYMNASTICS BOOKING REQUIREDCome and have a go at this popular Olympic sport. Gymnastics involves performing various exercises requiring physical strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and balance. Some elements include uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars, and high bar. We have an extremely talented and qualified coach to run this session for us so don’t miss out on the opportunity to come and try it out! Please bring a drink.

HIGH ROPES BOOKING REQUIREDThe High Ropes course at Beaumanor Hall is one of the largest of its type in the country. The course allows you to develop teamwork and mutual support skills. You can face and overcome your fears with the support of others on the High Ropes course, which will test your head for heights whilst you walk along ropes and poles 9 metres above the ground across the 9 sections involving balance beams and wobbly bridges. You can enjoy a thrilling ride on one of the 150 metre zip wires from the top of a 11.5 metre tower. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and bring a drink.

HOCKEY (KWIK STICKS) BOOKING REQUIREDHockey is a fun and exciting sport. The session will include drills, skills and participants will then get the chance to put these skills into practice in a game. Please bring shin pads and a drink. All other equipment will be provided.

HUNTING MONSTERS IN THE WASHLANDS BOOKING REQUIREDJoin the bug hunt in this exciting wildlife haven. With the help of the Access to Nature Officer you will search for a vast array of bugs in Stonebow Washlands. Under 8s need to be accompanied by an Adult (Aged, 16 Years+). IMPROVING LIVES TOURRoADSHowS AIM To TACkLE CRIME AND IMPRoVE LIVES

A series of summer roadshows will focus on improving lives for residents in Charnwood.

A team of officers from various agencies will be available to talk to people at 11 special ‘Improving Lives, Supporting Communities’ events between June and September.

They will be on hand to answer questions, give advice and help people affected by welfare reform changes, health and well-being, hate incidents, anti-social behaviour and crime.

Residents can voice any concerns to representatives from Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire Police, The Bridge and other support agencies.

These are community events at which the Sport & Active Recreation team will have a presence.

Children are the responsibility of parents/guardians at these events.

Councillor David SnarttCharnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, said:

“Our annual roadshows provide a good opportunity for us to speak face-to-face with customers so we can better support their neighbourhoods and improve lives. We are here to help people with everything from welfare reform to crime. People can report incidents to us and speak in confidence to the people who can take action to help.”
