It’s the time of year that Gregory, like any other smallchild, is full of the joys of the season; brimming withSanta related excitement and bouncing off the wallswith pent up anticipation of the big day.A few days ago, we set about writing our letter toSanta. As we settled down with our pencil and pad, itbecame obvious that Gregory had already given hisextensive Christmas list some careful thought. I tookmy role as scribe as he declared that he had been avery good boy (not strictly true) and followed byreeling off a list of fairly predictable items for his pileof small presents. I told him that the last thing weshould ask for would be the ‘main’ gift and was poisedto fill in the gap with the word ‘bike’ as we hadpreviously discussed, but was surprised to hear quitea different response.“I’d like a piano please,” he said enthusiastically.I asked him if he was sure about that, given that hehad already got a lovely orange plastic keyboard.“No, no, no Mummy,” he replied shaking his headfuriously, “I want a big piano, a grown up one.”I explained that we didn’t really have the space for apiano and besides, Santa would probably already haveput a nice shiny bike aside for him, but he remainedadamant that the only thing that his heart desired wasa piano ... and a reindeer ... to live in the garden. Aftera long conversation, I managed to compromise withGregory and he chose a more realistic instrument - atrumpet (hooray!) and accepted the fact that wewouldn’t be able to provide adequate care for areindeer.Eventually, we diverted our attention away from theletter to Santa and started to discuss the night beforeChristmas when Santa would pay a visit to our home.Gregory asked a number of questions about whatwould happen whilst he slept. Happy in the knowledgethat Santa would soon be here, he settled down tosome drawing, until he looked up at me with a slightlytrembling lip. “Mummy,” he sniffed, “How will Santa beable to get my big piano down our chimney?”

It’s not every day you get asked tointerview someone who you havegrown up watching on TV from anearly age with the likes of ‘Porridge’,‘Some Mothers do ‘Ave ‘Em’,‘Rentaghost’ and the children’sSaturday morning show ‘On Safari!’.If these shows don’t surface on yourradar then I am definitely showing myage and perhaps he is better knownto you for his career in panto andmore recently ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get meout of here’ when he won the title ofKing of the Jungle in 2007. Yes I amtalking about the one and onlyChristopher Biggins or as weaffectionately know him ‘Biggins’. Hehas a career that spans many decadesand many genres from sitcoms toserious stage plays, to the out and outsilly.

So when asked if I would like tointerview Christopher for Jolly Totsabout his exciting new role as narratorof ‘Myro, The Smallest Plane in theWorld’, I jumped at the chance.

Not only was I excited to meetChristopher, but the story of Myro alsoappealed to me.

The creator of Myro, Nick Ross, is alsoat the interview and explains how helearnt to fly a microlight while living inAustralia and from this experienceMyro was born. Nick told me he hasalways been a big fan of Biggins sowas delighted when Christopheragreed to be the narrator and saidworking with him has been great.

Christopher began by talking aboutwhat attracted him to take on the partof Myro. ‘It’s a fabulous series ofbooks and the quality is sensational.Myro gets into all sorts of scrapes likeany little boy and he has to get out ofthem. Along the way he meets a lotof people, sometimes helpful, sometimes not. There’s a verymoralistic tale to the stories that Ithink children will identify with. Itteaches that if you work hard and geton with people you will become abetter person and I think that’s all wecan ask of children today’.

He went on to say, ‘It’s important thestory is good and that you are puttingover a message. Some of the videogames that children are given arevery violent and are not familyfriendly and there’s a negativity aboutthem. That’s what has been goodabout doing Myro. Myro is every child;he’s gorgeous and you can aspire tohim easily unlike some action heros. Also he’s a character that everyonecan get into and parents whenreading Myro with their child willenjoy the stories as well and I thinkthat’s important.’

Nick then shows me a clever and veryenticing interactive app that he hasdeveloped for the ipad so thatchildren can watch and interact withMyro’s many adventures. Christopherinterjects saying how he thinks theapp is a wonderful way forward aschildren these days are used togetting entertainment fromtechnology. He says: ‘The Myro appwill make car, train and aeroplanejourneys so much more interesting fora child as there is so much interaction. It will keep children amused forhours.’

There are also plans for Myro to beturned into a television series withseveral TV companies showing a lot of

My Interview with

by Chrissy Brown

Christopher explained howMyrois a lovely story of a little fiveyear old Microlight called Myrowho emigrates to Australia andmeets all sorts of characters, including native animals such askoalas, kangaroos and otheraeroplanes. He formsrelationships and has all sorts ofadventures rescuing old planesand animals.

interest and if Myro takes off(pardon the pun), Nick andChristopher believe there is noreason why Myro can’t go worldwideand be translated into differentlanguages. In fact, Nick said whenhe was creating Myro he chosenames of characters that weren’tcountry specific for this reason.

When asked how much influenceChristopher’s time in the AustralianJungle in 2007 had whenapproached to do this role, it quicklybecomes apparent that ‘I’m aCelebrity, Get me Out of Here’ playeda massive part in his life and had aprofound impact on him as a person.‘I was very moved, it was a lifechanging experience and is withoutdoubt one of the top highlights. Itstretched me as a person, it’s anextraordinary experience.’ He statedthat he developed a love forAustralia while doing ‘Celebrity’ andthis definitely played its part in himtaking on the role.

Christopher talked in depth aboutwhat a wonderful experience it wasto do Celebrity and how he neverthought he could win. ‘‘I wasamazed at how many young peopletook to me. It was great to have awhole new, younger audience. Itsurprised me and they obviously sawsomething which I think tickled theirfancies.’

I put it to Christopher that the public

are quite discerning and are usuallygood judges of people. He agreed,‘Yes I think you’re right and I thinkit’s lovely that I was allowed to bemyself. A lot of people don’t reallyknow how to be themselves andthey are frightened of beingthemselves and don’t know whothey are. They often playcharacters, so a comedian is oftensomebody else other than who he isnormally so to be themselves is verydifficult because if you start actingyou can lose your way. Three weeksis a long time especially when you’reunder pressure and have little food.’

I asked if what you see on ‘Celebrity’is really how it is. ‘Absolutely, whatyou see is what you get. There is notaking us away in luxury limos at theend of a show. One day we allworked very hard and the food camein and we were given a crocodile legto cook and we went up and threw itback at them. We were so angry asthere was no meat on it. We didrebel!’

’Myro, The SmallestPlane in the World’ was

launched on 30thOctober 2012. See page

24 for our Myrogiveaway.

I asked how with all his successesin the limelight, he has managed tostay so grounded and true tohimself. He tells me how he justloves people and expressed thatone of the reasons he lovespantomime so much is because itallows him to be surrounded byeveryday, real people and he lovesthe interaction. He said nice peopleare in abundance out there andChristopher certainly loves to besurrounded by them.

And an interview with ‘Biggins’would not be complete withouttalking about pantomime, ‘So thebig question Christopher, is thereany scope for Myro thePantomine?’ Christopher’s eyeslight up and with muchenthusiasm, he answers ‘Yes,absolutely as we have lots ofmusic!’ He went onto say there’salready been Myro musicals inschools which he thinks will takeoff. ‘It’s a marvellous thing forschools to do.’

So will we be seeing Biggins inpanto this year? I think we allknow the answer to that. Oh yeswe will! He will be playing Sarahthe cook in ‘Dick Whittington’ atthe Theatre Royal in Plymouth, also starring the one and only BasilBrush (again showing my age!)Just a shame it’s so far awayotherwise I would be very temptedto go.

My final question to Christopher,‘What would you like to beremembered for?’ Without a pausethe answer came immediately,‘That I enjoyed life, had a fun timeand used every element of it to it’sfullest.’

Then came the sad moment whereI had so say goodbye to a lovelylovely man with a big heart forpeople so I stole a big bear hugfrom him and was on my way.

As we ventured further intothe interview it became clearthat Christopher really is aslovely as he comes across onour screen and has aninfectious sense of fun. Heseems a very warm andgenuine person with a bigheart for people.

The key to having an enjoyablefestive season both with yourchildren and with your friends isforward planning. Ensure thatyou don’t miss out on all of thoseparty invitations by gettingorganised and planning yourbabysitter as far in advance aspossible.

It is advisable that you leave yourbabysitter with a checklist eachtime they babysit for you, toinclude information such aswhere you are going, emergencycontact numbers for you and whoto call if you can’t be contacted, along with your doctor’s nameand address; this will provide thebabysitter with the importantinformation they may need whilstyou are away. In addition to ababysitter checklist, following thefew simple steps below will helpto prepare your babysitter formost situations he/she might

encounter whilst babysitting yourchildren.

Ask a new babysitter to arrive 30minutes before you are due to goout so you can give him/her a

tour of the house. Go througheach room and think of anythingthey might need there. Discussyour house rules andexpectations as you go. Youshould show the babysitter thefoods that children can and cannot eat, also tell him/her rulesabout when and where thechildren can eat. It is importantthat you tell the babysitter,

especially if you have olderchildren, the rules on using thecomputer and telephone. Showthe babysitter to your children’sbedrooms where he/she can findtheir clothes and toys. This is agood time to discuss the bedtimeroutine and what should be doneif there are any problems withthis.

If the children need to havemedicine administered, specificinstructions should be left alongwith a thermometer. Discuss anyallergies and what the babysittershould do if a reaction occurs.

I know this is a lot of information, but when you’ve covered it all youcan leave the house relaxedknowing that the babysitter iswell equipped to care for yourchild, leaving you to enjoy yourevening.by Heidi McFadyen

Childcare arrangements can be difficult to organise at the best of times, but how do you go about arranging a babysitter over the festive season?

Rebecca Carpenter of Eaton Soconasks: My very active almost three yearold is always asking for food. Howmany snacks is OK, as I don't want toover feed her?

Jane says: “Good question, to which there is no right or wrong answer. Childrenhave small stomachs so they are naturally better suited to eating little and often. They also go through ‘growing phases’ where their hunger can know no bounds(though I’d be suspicious of a child claiming ahunger that only a snack will cure when onlyminutes before vegetables were refused attea). So yes, in principle I agree with snacksand indeed, nurseries tend to havemid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks as analmost universally accepted and necessaryoccurrence in a child’s day. A few tips on thesnack, perhaps. Too much of a sweet treatthough and a child will bounce off the wallsand ignore the nutritious lunch or tea lovinglyprepared. Too filling a snack and a child willbe unable to both bounce of the walls and eatthe afore-mentioned nutritious lunch or tea!So a snack cupboard comprising of a varietyof ‘little, yet varied’ snacks, to be consumed inmoderation, in my opinion, is a good thing.”

Hooray! It's that timeof year again whereyour children will nodoubt be hanging offyour legs squealing,'How many more daysMummy?/IsSantanearlyhereMummy?/Can I havethe world in mystocking Mummy?' Ifthis sounds like afamiliar scenario, thenwe’ve got some ideasthat’ll keep themoccupied with dailyactivities to get thecreative juices flowingandbuild theexcitementas the big day getsnearer.

An Activity a Day

The idea of an activity a day isgreat because the children get tofeel they are contributingsomething towards theChristmas preparations on adaily basis and that you get totake advantage of theirenthusiasm and have them helpto get things organised!

Lucky Dip

The first thing you need to do toorganise your activities is thinkabout how you are going topresent the ideas to yourchildren. There are manycreative ways you can do this, but our favourite is theChristmas Bucket. This is asimple idea that won't take longto prepare (this is your'handmade' task!). Decorate a

bucket or a bowl in any way youwish and fill it with enoughscrolls of paper to take you up toChristmas Eve. On each scrollwrite an activity for the day anddraw or stick a visual clue forolder babies and toddlers. Markeach one with the date so thatyou can prepare for each activitydaily. Then let your children findthe day's scroll each morningand let the 'handmade' timesroll!

Share the Work

There's plenty for Mum toarrange over Christmas andmost of us would be more thangrateful for a little bit of time torelax and let someone else takeover. Get your pals with childrenof a similar age involved andmark a few scrolls with groupactivities. For example, one scroll

might read 'Make paper lanternsat Gloria's house'...just makesure that Gloria's child has acorresponding scroll on the sameday! You and your friends canthen alternate activities with thehostess preparing and runningthe session whilst the othermums take a break.

Inspiration

The handmade possibilities areendless; there's plenty of childcentred ideas in books and onthe internet and you can pick thebrains of other parents.

Here are a few of our personalfavourites...

Handmade Gifts

The great thing about makingthings with baby and toddler isthat Grandparents, aunts anduncles will be over the moonwhen they receive a gift whichcan incorporate a momentum ofthe precious child's first years onthe planet.

A lovely idea is to work with thebabies' and toddlers' hand andfootprints so that the recipientcan keep their gift forever. Youcan pop along to your localpottery painting studio (see ourGift Guide on page 18) andchoose a plate, mug or plaque topop your baby's mark on (or dothe whole family on a big item!).For the more creative child givethem a brush and some paintsand let them loose on a trinketbox for Grandma or a money boxfor Daddy!

On a day at home, you can giveyour child crayons and paintsand let them create a designwhich you can then use toproduce another unique gift. From calendars to mouse mats;you can pretty much get your

children's artwork popped ontoalmost anything! Do rememberthat when ordering from acompany who will make up thefinal product you need to checkhow much notice they require tocomplete your order. It's a goodidea to get these activities doneearly.

Handmade Decorations

Making Christmas decorationscan be easier than it may sound.Specialist modelling clay such asPolymer clay can be great fun touse to create vibrant Christmastree decorations and if your

children are already used tousing Playdoh, then rolling ballsto make up Santa's tummy andhead should be a doddle.Alternatively, they can cut outshapes using festive cookiecutters. Don't forget to bodge ahole through your item to threadyour ribbon before baking it!

You may also like to takeadvantage of your period ofmaking things at home to teachyour child how to sew. Cut outpieces of felt to stuff and sewtogether and add a ribbon tohang it. You can get hold of largeblunt needles for your child to

use and with some supervision, they can make large simplestitches (you can always add afew more if need be!).

A very simple idea (and great forbabies too) is to take some plaincardboard, cut it into the shapeof a circle, bodge a hole in thetop and let them paint it in anyway they wish.

With a spot of research and asmall helping of creativity, youcan combine a vast array ofmaterials to create enoughhanging decorations totransform your tree into aprize-winning specimen!

And don’t forget the rest of thehouse during your creativeextravaganza! A lovely simpleactivity which can be adapted forall ages, is to cut out longrectangles of paper and let yourchild paint, stick and glitter thembefore you secure them intoloops to make beautiful paperchains to adorn your walls.

Christmas Collages

Let your children create amasterpiece to pop on the wallannually- for Grandparents tocoo over and your child to cringeover when you're still putting itup beside the tree fifteen yearslater. Children can create festivepictures with paint by using theirfingers, cookie cutters dipped inpaint, potatoes halved and cutinto tree or holly shapes. Lettheir imaginations run wild whilstthey cut out festive pictures andsprinkle glitter over their artwork(and your house!)

Baking

From fairy cakes with festiveicing to baking simple biscuits inthe shape of Christmas trees;baking is an activity which all

children love to do. Older babiescan get involved too, helping tostir the ingredients together witha helping hand from a grown up.You can be as creative as youlike with your decorations as youcan buy all manner of edibleglitter and festive cake toppers. This activity is one to keep forthe final few days of yourhandmade extravaganza, so thatyour products are fresh whenoffered round on Christmas Day.

Corner Cutting

If the thought of filling yourbucket with a plethora ofactivities that require materialsand time seems a little daunting, don't worry; we'll all be adding afew simple ones to the pot! Forthose 'in between' days, here's alist of effective ideas whichrequire minimal effort but willkeep the creative theme going.

Ask your child to make up aChristmas story to tell to anothergrown up. Choose charactersand possible events to help themform ideas. They can drawpictures or a story board to helpthem remember the sequence ofthe tale.

Provide Plasticine or Playdoh andask them to make Christmasrelated items. You can inspirethem with ideas or ask them tomake up their own ideas so thatyou can guess what they are.Take photos to show people howclever they are!

Learn a new Christmas Caroltogether – or think about festiverhyming words and make a songor poem up yourselves.

Learn to read and spellChristmas related words anddraw corresponding pictures.

Make up and practice aChristmas show or the story ofthe nativity using puppets.Perform it to a mini audience andvideo it to play annually (to yourchild’s growing embarrassment!)

Whatever you choose to fill yourbucket with, your children willlove getting involved with thebuild up to the most exciting dayof the year – and you're likely toend up with an array of gifts anditems that you can make use ofyear upon year.

We'd love to hear your'Handmade Christmas' ideas. Please visit out Facebookpage and share them withus!

It starts earlier every yearYou have barely unpacked from yoursummer holiday and Christmasdecorations are on sale. From themoment you announce you’reexpecting a baby, you’re bombardedwith information about what youshould and shouldn’t be eating, andeveryone has stories of labour to tellyou. Gathering information aboutpregnancy and birth is likely to beuseful but take your time. Findwebsites or books that you like andthink about booking antenatal classeswhere you can meet other expectantparents and plan together. If this isnot your first baby, look for anantenatal exercise or relaxation class.

The date’s on the calendarWe know exactly when Christmas daywill come, but for the majority ofexpectant parents, you are not goingto know when your baby will be born, and every labour will be different.Only 5% of babies are born on theirdue date, so your planning needs tobe flexible.

We always have nuts atChristmasIn December everyone at thesupermarket seems to be stocking upwith enough nuts to last for a year,

and how many times have you foundan unopened and out-of-date tub atthe end of March? Buying baby stuffcan quickly follow suit! When you arehaving a baby it can feel like you’ll befailing as parents if you don’tpurchase that new ‘must have’designer pushchair or gadgetmonitor. Speak to parents who haveslightly older children, get their tipson what you really need. Also lookout for nearly-new sales, which cansave you huge amounts of money.

Yes, we do have to invite twentypeople for lunchWe all know the pressure ofentertaining extended family over theChristmas season. When your babyarrives you can feel the expectationthat everyone should visit straightaway. However, this is a very specialtime with a new member of yourfamily when you can get to know oneanother so you may well feel theneed for some time on your ownwithout visitors. Try not to feel thepressure to cater for all your visitors, after all this is not Christmas! You willbe recovering from the birth andcaring for your baby, so see whethervisitors are willing to bring a mealwith them, or ask them to make youa cup of tea when they arrive.

Time to unwrap the presentsWhen you have a baby you are likelyto get lots of lovely gifts from friendsand family and unlike at Christmastime, they won’t be expecting anypresents from you in return. This isanother good reason not to buy toomany things in advance. If you haveolder children then helping themchoose a gift for their new siblingbefore the birth can be a lovely wayto make them feel involved too. Youmight also want to think abouthaving a gift ready to give to olderchildren so they feel included wheneveryone else is bringing gifts for thebaby.

Ultimately having a new baby is hardwork but unlike many of the gifts youget for Christmas it will last a lifetime.

Jenny volunteers at theSt Neots NCT Bumps andBabes group which meets atthe Eatons Children's Centre,Eaton Socon, St. Neots 10-12on Thursdays. All expectantmums and those caring forpre-walking babies welcome.

Expecting a baby is similar to preparing for thefestive season, but there are differences too...

It was while Ali was pregnant with her son (16 monthsago) and buying equipment and clothing she wassurprised at just how much she needed and the costinvolved. A number of items bought were quicklyoutgrown and hardly used. Ali later sold these items viavarious means (local paper, internet) which made herthink how much easier it would have been if there was acentral location where you could go to purchase goodquality nearly new equipment, hence The Baby Exchangewas born.

The Baby Exchange is in Pidley, Cambridgeshire. Theysell and exchange very good condition, pre-owned babygoods as well as a range of new goods. Just a few of themany items include Moses baskets, pushchairs, babyclothes, travel cots, bouncers, Bumbos, highchairs, babyshower supplies and nappy cakes.

The large stock and low prices have proved to be aninstant success with their customers and many have madereturn visits as stock is constantly changing. Paymentschemes are available for larger purchases. The BabyExchange offers the opportunity to exchange items forother items in the shop or in return for a Baby Exchangevoucher.
