Schools Newsletter SUMMER 2014 New for 2014! The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar and The Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar The JORVIK Group is proud to announce the addition of another venue to our family of attractions: the Richard III Experience at Monk Bar. This stunning medieval gatehouse is now home to a new exhibition telling the story of England’s most famous medieval king: Richard III. School groups visiting Monk Bar can learn all about the turbulent times in which he lived with our Medieval Battles and Sieges workshop, included in your visit. Groups can also link their visit with a trip to the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar, which tells the story of Richard’s greatest enemy, Henry Tudor. Included in the visit to this attraction is our Crime and Punishment workshop, which explores justice in the city, as well as the Tudors’ methods for controlling their rebellious subjects in the north. Joint admission to these new exhibitions is £6.50 per child and £7.50 per teacher; one teacher goes free with every 6 children booked. Each of these visits can be adapted to suit Key Stages 1 – 3. More options to make your visit to York even more memorable include our new Medieval Day (£8 per child and £9 per teacher), with a visit to both Bars and Barley Hall, our medieval townhouse, plus a guided walk across the medieval city. For more details of these and other new workshop offers, available from September 2014, please call our reservations department on 01904 615505. Roman Burial Loan Box A new addition to our ever-popular loan box service comes in the form of our Roman Burial loan box, which gives you the opportunity to re-enact the burial of a wealthy Roman Briton. Choose from a selection of replica artefacts to give him a burial befitting his importance, and to equip him for his journey to the afterlife. Your choices will need to be based on Roman religious beliefs and requirements: get the details wrong and his unhappy shade could wander the banks of the River Styx for a hundred years! All of the elements included in the box are based on archaeological evidence, much of which was uncovered during the recent Hungate dig in York: amazing Roman finds from this dig can still be seen in the Looking Back at Hungate exhibition at our DIG attraction. DON’T FORGET! The annual Yorkshire Medieval Festival in August. Visit www.yorkshire- medieval-festival.com for details.

ter New Teachers’ Resource:

Prehistory in YorkshireA selection of new materials on teaching prehistory in Yorkshire, including an introductory guide and inspiring lesson plans, is now available via the JORVIK Group website. Prehistory elements in the new Primary History curriculum may seem daunting: these new resources by Beatrice Wallbank make the subject more approachable, and are the perfect guide to accessing prehistoric sites and artefacts on your doorstep. Go to www.thejorvikgroup.com/education to find out more.

Roman / Anglo-Saxon York map giveawayAll schools booking a visit to JORVIK from September 2014 will qualify for a copy of the OS Historical Map and Guide to Roman and Anglian York. Just ask for your copy on arrival at JORVIK admissions. While stocks last.

Free INSET Days at JORVIK Group AttractionsTuesday 22nd July: Chronology in the History curriculum at Key Stages 2 – 3This day of workshops has been conceived in association with York Mansion House to tackle the issue of ‘chronology’ in the new History curriculum, and is ideally suited to any teachers wishing to sharpen their understanding of the sequence of historical periods and events in British history. With talks by museum professionals and visits to two historic buildings, plus a guided walk around some of York’s key heritage sites, this INSET day will serve as a valuable refresher for anyone struggling to tell their Romans from their Georgians.

Wednesday 23rd July: Key Stages 1 and 2: the new History CurriculumThis INSET day will share with you our vision for a cross-curricular teaching approach, demonstrating how archaeology can shine a light on the prehistoric, Roman and Viking periods. With resource packs full of activities to take away, this is an opportunity to access ideas and lesson plans for the school year ahead, as well as a chance for you to shape York Archaeological Trust’s schools policy according to YOUR requirements. You will also take an exclusive look at the new Richard III Experience for schools, a brilliant new resource for bringing York’s medieval history to life!

The INSET days run between 9.30am and 4pm. They are free to attend, and refreshments and lunch will be provided. Places are limited and will be made available on a strictly first-come, first-served basis. The ‘Chronology’ day will include an outdoor, city centre walk of approximately 1 ½ hours that crosses several busy roads, so participants should be fit enough to take part and should dress appropriately. To find out more, to request a full schedule or to reserve your place, call 01904 615505 no later than Monday 30th June.
