Ministry of Motherhood Because Motherhood Isn’t Just a Job. It’s a Calling.

Cozy Mountain Lodge is a relaxing mountain lodge themed retreat the women of our church are doing together with Pastor Sarah Goldammer and the women of Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre. It includes worship, Bible study, and time for laughter as well as time for quiet reflection. We’ll leave from Bethlehem at 4:00 on Friday, November 16 and head to Joy Ranch, the newest

Lutherans Outdoors camp in South Dakota and return to Bethlehem by 5:00 on Saturday, November 17. The cost is $80.00 per person based on 2 person occupancy. This covers three delicious meals, transportation, fun and refreshing activities, a Cozy Mountain Lodge journal and comfortable lodging accessible to all mobility needs. To register or for more information, stop by the front office at Bethlehem or contact Pastor Deb Grismer at 605-225-9740 ext. 29. Take time to relax, to make new friends, to worship, and to draw closer to God. We hope you’ll join us for Cozy Mountain Lodge women's retreat!

Mothers of any age are invited to gather together in fellowship and learning as we strive together to be the best mothers for our chil-dren and grandchildren that we can be. The group will meet the first Tuesday of each month from 6:45-7:45 p.m. beginning November 6. Childcare is available. Please call the front office to register at 225-9740. For more information, contact Pastor Deb Grismer. This group will begin by taking time to walk through Sally Clarkson’s book The Ministry of Motherhood: Following Christ's Example in

Reaching the Hearts of Our Children and then see where the needs of the group and the Holy Spirit take us from there. Using biblical wisdom and practical teachings, Sally Clarkson shows how you can make a last-ing difference in your child’s life by following the pattern Christ set with his own disciples–a model that will inspire and equip you to intentionally embrace the rewarding, desperately needed, and immeasurably valua-ble Ministry of Motherhood. Cost of the book is $11.00.

PRESCHOOL NEWS

Happy Fall from the Bethlehem preschoolers! We started out this season by exploring our community and discussing community helpers. We set up a post office in our classroom and then we got to go see the real post office on a field trip! Check out our community murals up just outside of our hallway. You will also see our family art project for the month of October on display: Scarecrows! Each child created one at home with

their family, and they definitely display each child’s creativity and personality. We had a fun trip out to the BLC garden with Steve Casanova where we each got to pick our own mini pumpkin! We are excited to paint them soon! We also went on Halloween trick-or-treating field trips to Primrose Place and Primrose Cottages. Thank you to all for the continuing support of our program by way of Box Tops, receipts, soup labels, and ink cartridges.

Confirmation Updates

9th

Graders

We are over half way done with our ten core classes shared with parents. We have had time learning together from each other, lay leaders, and all three pastors. We also marked the 9th Grade Milestone with the Blessing of the Keys. We had a fun night trick or treating for canned goods helping stock the shelves at our local food pantries. In November, we’ll learn more about our Lutheran heritage as part of the Christian faith. No Class on Sunday, November 4th (corrected date), or November 21 (Wednesday) or 25 (Sunday). Use the time to rest and thank God!

We are also looking for Confirmation Small Group Guides for the Winter/Spring. You can help lead conversations with 9th graders around topics of faith, life and justice issues. No experience necessary. Contact Pastor Kevin, [email protected] or on Facebook.

10th

Graders

We are continuing to meet once a month as a large group. Students are meeting throughout the month with their mentors. We will meet Sunday, November 11 at 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall.

As we closed the books on the month of September, we are grateful that we are able pay our obligations in full, without incurring bank debt despite the fact that our net operating balance is a deficit of ($38,321). We knew at the time we adopted the budget that we would face challenges during certain seasons of the year. The budget was adopted with a known challenge of meeting the ministry expenses to keep doing what we are doing with the same quality standards we have come to expect. As with any plan or budget, there are many variables. Both our revenues and expenses are currently under budget targets, however expenses are exceeding revenues as we end the 3rd quarter of the year. We are committed to operating in a conservative fashion in regard to expenses but with the Fall ministries in session and record enrollment in our Christian Education programs, it takes a significant investment of materials, supplies and people power to provide a quality education experience for our

youth. There are approximately 670 young people enrolled in the various Christian Education ministries. A resource that has proven helpful to steady the income side of our cash flow has been the Simply Giving program. Simply Giving is an electronic giving option administered by Thrivent in which offering gifts can be made from checking or savings, or from the use of a debit or credit card. If you are interested in more details, please call Janis Heier, Director of Administration or visit the homepage of our website and view the online giving link. The leadership of Bethlehem strives to be financially solid and healthy so we can be a blessing to people in need, and continue to partner in God’s work in this world. Thank you for your stewardship. Because of our generous people, the congregation is able to offer opportunities and resources to minister to His people both within and outside of our walls.

SEPTEMBER 2012 FINANCIAL UPDATE

Faith Promise Card Information

By the time you receive this monthly newsletter, we will have already celebrated the collection of 2013 Faith

Promise Cards in worship. These cards request information about your estimated giving or commitment for

the year 2013. On a practical level, we ask our members to turn in estimate of giving cards each year so that

our Financial Resource Team and Joint Commission are able to set an accurate ministry budget for the

coming year. This allows us to make the most of every dollar given to the church.

On a personal level, the commitment card is an opportunity for you to spend time in prayer and reflection,

considering what offering you would make to God through our church in the coming year. We hope you were

able to join us for one of these meaningful services as we celebrate and consecrate our gifts to the ministry of

our church for the coming year.

If you haven’t submitted your card, we invite you to please do so. It isn’t too late. We have additional cards

available in the office. On behalf of the elected leadership, Pastors, and staff here at Bethlehem Lutheran

Church, we thank you for your Faith Promise commitment responses. Because of your gift, combined with

those of our Bethlehem family, we will be able to accomplish many great works. Lives are truly being

transformed through our work together as we proclaim the Good News and work to connect people of all

ages to Jesus.

From Aberdeen to Nicaragua Bethlehem’s partnership with the Lutheran Church in Nicaragua is growing. Following wondering and dreaming conversations over the past few years, things have come together for Pastor Jeff to be part of a small group of South Dakotans traveling to Nicara-gua November 27 – December 7. Many details of the trip are still being determined, but will include meeting with and learning

from Faith and Hope Lutheran Church, our companion synod in Nicaragua.

Numerous congregations in our SD Synod have taken groups to learn and serve with our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua. On this trip, Pastor Jeff will be exploring possibilities for people of Bethlehem to participate in future trips and partnerships. Please hold this trip and partnership in prayer, and if you are interested in learning more or possibly participating in a future trip, contact Pr. Jeff. For more information visit www.sdsynod.org/ministries/companion-synods

Congregation Meeting & Elections

On Sunday morning, December 9th we’ll gather at 9:40 for our regular congregation meeting. A key part of this meeting will be ministry updates as well as elections of new leaders. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone for elected leadership, please fill out a form from the front office or talk with a pastor or Joint Commission member.

Angel Trees Are Coming to Bethlehem And Jesus took the children up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

~ Mark 10:16

The community of faith at Bethlehem has a strong tradition of being the arms

of Jesus and blessing children and families in this community and around the

world with Christmas gifts each year. The Teaching Ministry Team thanks you

from the bottom of our hearts for touching lives through your participation in

past Christmas projects, such as The Heifer Project and Operation Christmas

Child. This year the Teaching Ministry Team is bringing Angel Trees to

Bethlehem. We are networking with others in the Aberdeen community to help bring the blessings of

Christmas to the homes of those in need. Watch for the trees to appear in the narthex in

November. Then take a tag or two, purchase the gift(s), wrap them and return them to the trees. Thank

you in advance for being the arms of Jesus!

We Celebrate a November Staff

Anniversary Milestone

Vicky Beck serves as a Wedding Coordinator. We celebrate Vicky’s 1st year anniversary date

on November 12th. As a Wedding Coordinator, Vicky works part time, as needed, with couples and the pastors, to coordinate and

facilitate the details concerning wedding ceremonies scheduled at Bethlehem.

Thank You Bethlehem!

This year's "Homemade in Aberdeen, USA" Bazaar was a huge success! We salute the many wonderful people of Bethlehem for all of your help with donations of art, baked goods, canning, crafts, produce, silent auction items, stitchery etc. Your time and talents were much appreciated and needed. A special thanks to all who attended. Your participation and presence the day of the event was such a blessing.

This year's bazaar cleared a total of $5,452.58 which will ensure that the Social Concerns ministry can continue to assist the special needs of people in emergency situations. The emphasis will go toward BLC members first, then the greater Aberdeen community. These needs may be for clothing, food, medical related expenses, housing, utilities, travel, etc. due to loss of income, health or other situations beyond their control.

We are very grateful to our pastors and supportive staff in our fundraising effort. A special thanks to Steve and his team for set up and take down, Cyndi for assistance with printing & publicity, Lori for her helpful and positive attitude, Janis and Val for handling finances for the bazaar as well as other Social Concerns requests throughout the year, and Kay Vikander for all her help in the kitchen. We are truly blessed here at Bethlehem!

If you were unable to attend this year's bazaar, please plan to support this annual congregational fundraiser next year. Our tentative date will be Saturday, November 9th, 2013. So mark your calendars now and plan to be there. We are planning for something new and exciting. It is you that makes it a success. Thank you so much and God's blessings.

~ The Social Concerns Committee
