Sermon Outline

E. Paul Hovey, "A Blind man’s world is bound by the limits of his touch; an ignorant man’s world is bound by the limits of his knowledge; a great man’s world is bound by the limits of his vision." Someone else wrote, “Everybody ends up somewhere in life. A few people end up somewhere on purpose. Those are the ones with vision.” So, how do we define “vision”? Webster says that vision is… “The faculty of sight, unusual foresight or a mental image produced by the imagination…” John Maxwell defines vision this way… “Vision is the ability to see; which is awareness, the ability to believe; which is attitude and the ability to do; which is action." Proverbs 29:18 (KJV), “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” NIV puts it this way, “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint…” Japanese proverb, "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare." So, where does vision come from? I believe that a vision is born in the soul of a person who is consumed with the tension between what is and what could be. And why is vision so important for us as believers? Because vision will help to keep us on our God-given task…it will give us joy and purpose along the way and it will turn lukewarm, sleepy church members into red-hot, living soldiers who aren’t afraid of change and who are will-ing to risk it all to make a difference in this world for Christ. “Love God… Love Others… Love the World…”

• Our vision is to help people experience a God connection

Sermon Notes

• Our vision is to have a church family that comes together in authentic, relevant and vibrant praise of our God

• Our vision is to have a church family that is unified in their love, kindness, compas-

sion and concern for each other • Our vision is to equip people to grow into spiritual maturity through Life Groups,

Bible Studies and Practical Ministry Events • Our vision is to make Christ known, and to see hundreds of broken and hurting

people come to know that there is a God who loves, forgives and who can change their lives

• Our vision is to impact, enrich, and improve our surrounding communities and the

world through acts of kindness, compassion and love • And we believe that our vision is God-sized and is worthy of our time, talents and

treasure; and it can only be fulfilled by relying on Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish it through us!

Nehemiah 1:1-3 (CEV), “I am Nehemiah son of Hacaliah, and in this book I tell what I have done. During the month of Chislev in the twentieth year that Artaxerxes ruled Persia, I was in his fortress city of Susa, when my brother Hanani came with some men from Judah. So I asked them about the Jews who had escaped from being captives in Babylonia. I also asked them about the city of Jerusalem. They told me, ‘Those captives who have come back are having all kinds of troubles. They are terribly disgraced, Jerusalem’s walls are broken down, and its gates have been burned.’” He looked around and saw the need He looked inside and felt the need Nehemiah 1:4, “When I heard this, I sat down and cried.” Luke 19:41, “When the city came into view, he wept over it.” Someone wrote, “There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart. Pursue them.” He looked above and shared the need Nehemiah 1:4, “Then for several days, I mourned; I went without eating to show my sorrow, and I prayed…”

Reflection… 1 Chronicles 4:10. “Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”

CENTRAL INDIA CHRISTIAN

MISSION (CICM) Ajai and Indu Lall started CICM in December 1982 with a dream to obey Jesus’ Great Com-

mission by establishing a mission center in their homeland. From the very begin-ning they focused on evangelism, church planting and leadership training. What started with these two faithful servants has grown into a multifaceted mission helping thousands of people each year through evangelistic and benevolent minis-tries.

Evangelism: From CICM’s beginning their outreach has grown and now extends to 11 states of central and northern India, and the neighboring countries of Bangla-desh, Bhutan and Nepal.

Church Planting: With God’s help, CICM’s evangelists have planted and lead many churches. Within these churches are people whose lives have been changed by the Gospel message. People have discovered a new way of living, filled with hope and faith in the Living God and grounded in the truth of His Word.

Leadership Training: CICM provides training for their evangelists. Some earn a theology degree from Bible colleges in India. Most complete evangelist training at our Biblical Academy at the CICM campus.

Benevolent Ministries include a Children’s Ministry, a Medical Ministry and an Emergency Disaster Service.

TODAY IS FAMINE SUNDAY!

THIS WEEKEND, our youth group participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. They fasted for 30 hours to find out what hunger feels like - and to raise funds to help hungry children and their families. It’s not too late to support for you to support this effort! Every $35 we raise can help feed and care for one child for a month. You can make a check pay-able to the Journey, and write “30-hr Famine” on the memo line. And don’t forget to join our “Kiss the Cow” challenge! Donate $35 (or whatever amount you like), designate the funds as either “Adam” or “Jerry” - whoever gets the most money donated in their name will have to “Kiss the Cow!” (or camel, or pig, or whatever barnyard animal can be located). Want to learn more about our youth group’s Famine and how you can help?

Call (703) 971-0277 or e-mail [email protected].

DEDICATION AND GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY MAY 4TH Let the renovations begin! Please join us on May 4th right after the 2nd service (1-ish) to help us kick-off the beginning of our renova-tions. We will provide all the fixin’s for lunch, a special time of dedi-cation, a short ground-breaking ceremony where Jerry will wield the ground-breaking shovel, and a prayer time to thank God for guiding us through the process and ask for His continued blessing on our

endeavor. Hope you can make it! If you have any questions, please feel free to email the office.

JOURNEY OUTDOORS - LEADER NEEDED! The Journey is sponsoring a hiking ministry designed to get us out and moving once a month, and to take some time to be out in God’s Creation and awe in the works of his hand. If this ministry is to continue, though, we need someone who can take over the lead! Our current leader, Kevin Doty, has had to step down. Basically, this person would just need to plan a hike or other activity once a month

(currently on the 3rd Saturday of each month). And that’s pretty much it! We would like to be able to resume this ministry in June. For more details or if you’re interested, please contact the office - [email protected].

JOURNEY MEALS TO GO Journey Meals To Go is an area of our church ministry that directly touches those in need. Currently, we provide meals to those that have had a new baby, had surgery or had any other circumstance arise that put them in need of meal sup-port. The meals are coordinated through the Meal Train website, making it sim-ple for the Journey Meals supporters and recipients to get all the important de-tails. If you or someone you know within the church is in need of support, or if you would like to help provide meals, please contact Abby Bulliner at [email protected] or Lisa Steedsman - [email protected] via email.

NEED MORE POWER? WE NEED MOWERS! We have slots open beginning next week for people to mow the grounds. So if you enjoy being outdoors and having the feel of pow-er beneath you, you’ve come to the right place. If you are interested in helping us mow the grass, sign up on the schedule in the lobby.

If you have not mowed before, you will need to see Don Davis for a quick session on the equipment before you start. Contact Don at [email protected].

COMMUNION PREPARATION FOR 2014 Have you been looking for a place to serve at the Journey? We need people to prepare communion. We need people to prep & set up before 1st service and between services, someone to clean up after 2nd service, and someone to do prep, set up and clean up for the 3rd service! You’ll see a sign up sheet in the lobby reflecting these three areas. Normally sign up is on a monthly basis, but if you can only serve one or two weeks in a month, that’s OK, too! Easy to follow instructions and all supplies are provided. If you can help, sign up on the sheet in the lobby, or just talk to Judy Davis. For more information, contact the Jour-ney office.

Opportunities to Serve

CROPS FOR KOINONIA - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! One Journey outreach ministry to the community is a group of volunteers who plant a garden on the church grounds every spring. The produce that is grown is given to Koinonia, an area

food bank to help feed those in need. Last year we gave over 1,300 pounds of tomatoes, squash, melons, beans, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, and okra. Koinonia is very thankful for fresh produce to supplement their canned goods. This spring we plan to start planting the garden around the beginning of May. No special skills are needed. We have several expert gardeners who can show you what needs to be done. After we plant, most of the help needed is to harvest and transport the produce to Koinonia. If you are interested in volunteering for this special ministry that gives back to the community we serve; please contact Dennis Corcoran at 703-644-6331 or by e-mail [email protected]
