Who would have thought that this was possible, when in December 2007 fi ve representatives of different jazz initiatives from fi ve European countries met for the fi rst time at the jazz club “domicil” in Dortmund, Germany, in order to start a journey to Europe together?—A journey, which - also because planned and organised together—has not always been easy and still not is. But that is why it is an absolute necessity: Europe, that’s us!—Not the institutions in Brussels, but each one of us. jazzplayseurope tells of this Europe and of perennial cooperation between very different, big as well as small organisations from meanwhile seven countries, which do not only talk, but indeed act. Initiated by Nadin Deventer in 2007 with RUHR.2010 in mind, the European Capital of Culture in 2010, jazzplayseurope has emerged from the understanding that structural networking and exchange between the regional musicians’ scenes in Europe is missing. jazzplayseurope: that are in the meantime more than 20 multinational cooperation projects, which have played on and enriched

Europe in seven countries in the last fi ve years, from the NL-Ruhr-Music-Kitchen 2010 to band exchanges to the 24-hours-run in 2011 and, of course, to the core of all projects, the jazzplayseurope-laboratory. Well then? Now the jazzplayseurope-family is invited to Brussels, to Europe’s capital, to celebrate its fi fth birthday duly and to take stock with partners, musicians and journalists as well as to look ahead! A start has been made, jazzplayseurope has developed from an initial instinct and small idea combined with much idealism and great commitment into a remarkable impetus. Hats off! Be our guest and celebrate ‚5 years of jazzplayseurope’ with us on the Winterjazz Festival at the Flagey in Brussels!

Andreas Wahl, musician involved in the fi rst jazzplayseurope-laboratory in 2009: ”The artistic results of the jazzplayseurope-laboratory, as well as its resulting impact and the professional effects are impressive. The jazzplayseurope-laboratory is an excel-lent example of how the artistic potential of the musicians, on the one hand, and the network provided by jazzplayseurope and the framework involved, on the other hand, benefi t from each other and develop a kind of dynamic nobody could have expected in the run-up phase!“

7 countries, 7 musicians, 4 days of trail & error—one European tour: What will be the future sound of European jazz? The three JazzPlaysEurope Labora-tories of the years 2009, 10 and 11 aim to catch a glimpse of where a new generation of jazz musicians are leading us to. The jazzplayseurope-lab as musical blind—date is an adventurious experiment for musicians and organizers at the same time. It gathers top musicians from 7 different European countries and regions for a 4 days rehearsal in complete artistic freedom. In this very intense period of time the musicians who most of the time not even knew each other by name before, live together, discuss, jam, quarrel and experiment to come up with a full concert program knowing that the tour throughout the 7 participating countries is already booked beforehand. As decentralized project, jazzwerkruhr hosted the fi rst edition of the jazzplayseurope-lab in 2009, followed by jazzlabseries in Bruges the year after and in 2011, the host was trytone in Amsterdam. The jazzplayseurope-lab 2012 is about to be prepared right now.

Nadin Deventer: The encounters of these outstanding musicians impress through their artistic quality but are also far more than just musical experiments: the musicians spend about 14 days together, they rehearse, play concerts, eat and tour together, through half of Europe. Especially the concerts on the festivals are very well attended with an average audience of 250 and some of them deservedly rewarded with standing ovations. It is also exciting to observe how each musician acts as host for one concert himself. Promoters, organisations and musi-cians move closer together and support this exciting experiment in equal measure.

Bright colours and absolutely No Blah-Blah at all— the 17th. International Jazzdays Dortmund Stefan Pieper, neue musik zeitung, 8.12.2010 … And when the „jazz-werkruhr“ initiative brings young talent from the free scene, it presents everything but ”Blah Blah“—which is what the title of the fi rst evening in Dortmund referred to. In fostering a lively Jazz culture, ”jazzwerk-ruhr“ starts right on the doorstep. Thanks to the excellent artistic level, the numerous collaborations which have taken place are having repercussions on the free scene at an

international level. This means that young ta-lent from Hamburg to Munich but also from Poland, France, Belgium and Slovakia meet on the stage in the big hall.

Marcos Baggiani: Two different musical worlds meet to create a new and unique dimension, a dimension that is worth to attest. The NL-Ruhr—music kitchen is the fi rst bilateral cooperation project emerging out of our international network of jazzplayseurope; the artictic qualitiy of the 3 encounters was extremely high; NL-Ruhr as neighbouring regions are since 2007 constantly approaching to each other thanks to trytone and jazzwerkruhr‘s cooperations within jazzplayseurope.

Nicely spiced musical stew “NL-Ruhr Music Kitchen” at the Consol Theatre Gelsenkirchen by Christoph Giese, Medienhaus Bauer,9.12.2010 ... That too many cooks don’t necessarily spoil the broth demonstrated the Germans and Dutch together, in a combned set after the break when they really played amazingly well together. The combination of the three German-Dutch collaborations of the “NL-Ruhr Music Kitchen“ ... were by the way arranged by the musicians involved, as ”jazzwerkruhr“ managing director Nadin Deventer emphasizes. The musicians had fi rst met over the past years during her series ”jazzplayseurope“.

The concerts of the remarkable piano trio ‘De Beren Gieren’ were a great success in 2010. The band won the Joung Jazz Talent contest in 2009 so expectations were high. Press and public were very enthusiast. A perfect timing to mingle with GriGri, the new project of French DJ Boulaone, also active in DJ Grazzhoppa’s DJ Bigband. A sparkling experience that will be.

Expectations of Kristina Fuchs:The combination of voice and trumpet has been established in many formations. With Christian Kappe and Kristina Fuchs, the ex-pectations may be high. Add the soprano sa-xophone of Mete Erker, fi tting like a sleeve. The two pianists, both masters of sound, will enrich the musical atmosphere with acoustic and electronic instrumentation. The musicalchallenge is the bringing together of 2 com-pletelydifferent repertoires.

  • 24-hour run

A cooperation between the Jazztopad Festival & jazzwerkruhr within the ‘NRW Cultural Saison in Poland 2011’26./27. November 2011: “We’re starting with a club night…”, says Nadin Deventer, and this clearly seems to be a bold statement after the long bus ride from North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) to Wroclaw. 30 musicians from NRW and Poland are going to perform 40 concerts in 15 locations in the next 24 hours. So the club night is only a loosening-up exercise for a start. At the same time that is to say, an audio-visual night is going to be performed and this expands the musical spectrum appropriate to jazz in the adjoining genres. During the presentations between the sets jazzwer-kruhr-organiser Nadin Deventer admits that she has fallen “immediately in love” with one formation or another; one can see how proud and happy she is concerning the reali-sation of this incredible project and one can feel the fever of everybody involved.

What’s happening here?“What’s in the fridge?” is the question of the 24-hours-run—what’s happening here anyway? What’s up? There’s a lot going on: After the club night, for example, a small breakfast-session takes place, in which the 30 musicians,

international journalists and festival direc-tor discuss together. During the City Run duo- and trio-constellations, who have never played together before, perform and play in cafés and bars as well as in private living rooms. Lyrical sounds behind drawn curtains, the audience is crowded together on just one sofa. “We carry our music out into the whole city”, tells an excited musician. Music jour-nalist Wolf Kampmann clearly states: “The festival does not take place in an ivory tower; the point is to bring everyday live in line with music!” The fi nal countdown takes place in the philharmonic hall of the city of Wroclaw, wherewith the complete spectrum from the club night to the chamber musical concert and from the living room to the philharmonic hall has been exhausted. May a summary be given by a professor? Florian Weber, pianist from Cologne, concludes the entire project: “We cannot afford to fi ght alone any longer. Europe is too little networked and this networking only works, when we all act in concert. This project involves all levels. It concerns musicians, journalists and organi-sers as well.” Nadin Deventer states it shorter: “Incredible. Never again!” And laughs. Perik Hillenbach, 2010lab.tv

TOUR MOVIE OF THE 24 HOUR RUN: 40 CONCERTS AT 15 LOCATIONS WITHIN 24 HOURS:

    www.2010lab.tv/video/jazzmarathon-24-hour-run-wroclaw

    Rzeczpospolita/Marek Dusza/28.11.2011

The surely most exhausting weekend in the history of the Polish jazz festival ended in the philharmonic hall of the city of Wroclaw on Sunday evening. Under the slogan “24h run: What’s in the fridge?“ German and Polish musicians performed in various places in the city. This is due to the cooperation with jazzwerkruhr and the NRW Cultural Season in Poland. Nadin Deventer of jazzwerkruhr and Piotr Turkiewicz, artistic director of Jazztopad, have developed and curated this project.

The concert of the international trio Minsarah, which is composed of the American bassist Jeff Denson, who had been fl own in directly from San Francisco, the Israeli, in New York living drummer Ziv Ravitz and the German pianist Florian Weber, was the sensation of the club night. Their lightning-fast improvisations as well as their casual change between melodious motifs and harmonic-rhythmic complexities of free jazz could make one feel dizzy.

The performances in private apartments, bookshops and clubs on Sunday were an original idea. The direct contact with the audience, the homely atmosphere, listening children, tea and the hospitality allayed all initial fears.

Such a project is the fi rst of its kind in Poland and even at the international level it is seen only rarely: The fi rst meeting of the musicians and the close proximity to the audience in small rooms created memorable encounters.
