JRBA Operation InAsMuch Missions BlitzSeptember 30 – October 7

Operation InAsMuch is fast approaching! Please let me know of the planned activitied in your church. The mission blitz has been a wonderful way for our churches to show God’s love to our community in the past as they work together in large and small efforts. Remember that this is a fluid situation and that you may discover projects that all ages can participate in as you interact and discuss. You are reminded to take pictures and to get them to Michael Khol ([email protected] ) . We are hopeful to have all eighteen of our churches involved once again

Valeria Breault, OIAM Chair [email protected] OR 434-969-4603

PLEASE NOTE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON A GROUP PROJECT:

I have mentioned in the past that there were going to be a few “larger” projects for Operation InAsMuch. This effort is beginning to take root and will manifest itself in two different stages. The 1st stage is to raise funds for materials and the 2nd stage is actually getting the manpower (women and children too) to work on the projects. The second stage will take place during the week of OIAM, buthe first really needs to begin as soon as possible.

I am asking churches to partner together financially towards building materials for OIAM. This can be done by sending checks to the JRBA office with OIAM on the memo line of the check. The amount we raise will determine the types of projects we are able to do . Please consider supporting this work and announce this to your congregation. If you want details, please do not hesitate to contact me by email ([email protected] ) or by phone (434-808-2383). Thank you for your continued partnership in ministry. Rev. Michael Khol

One Sunday in June, Cedar’s women on Mission collected a special offering during Worship for their Back-to-School project. Over $600 was collected. Thanks to this special offering they were able to help 2 families with a total of 4 children to buy clothes and school supplies. Some ladies in the church family are busy knitting hats for school age children for the Hope for Appalachia mission project.

Chestnut Grove is collecting school supplies for Buckingham County schools. They are also collecting money for Operation InAsMuch.

Enon’s fundraiser, held on Saturday, August 5, was a success! Fifty-six folks came out and were blessed by the music of Second Time Around and enjoyed a delicious spaghetti dinner. Several others picked up to-go plates and contributed to the effort. Over $800 was raised for Donna Hawkins and the family of Matt Bryant.

Fitzgerald Memorial is reaching out to the Cumberland County schools in various ways. On August 2, Fitzgerald held a prayer breakfast with staff, administration, and teachers. On August 14, Preston Sutton, a member of their youth group, made a presentation at the Cumberland School Board Meeting. Jones Chapel is collecting hats and gloves to send to the Appalachian school children for the winter. They have begun shopping and saving for the Hope Boxes to send out before Easter next year, too. They are very excited to be able to help with the Hope for Appalachia ministry.

Mt. Zion WMU and Baptist Men gave school supplies to the Buckingham County Schools. Each school was very appreciative. Four teachers at the elementary school needed ear buds, so 100 pairs were given, along with other things. The School Counselor also said there was a special need for a student who is gong to the hospital in Richmond several times a week until November and is in need of money for gas. Mt. Zion purchased a $50 gas card to assist with this need.

Sharon contributed numerous school supplies for the Buckingham Middle School to assist local children in need. Funds are being collected to purchase school supplies for Boxes of Hope for Appalachia and the Alma Hunt State Missions Offering. The Rose of Sharon WMU continues visiting with and delivering meals to those who are sick or homebound.

Mulberry Grove is actively preparing for the JRBA Operation InAsMuch Missions Blitz, scheduled for September 30 – October 7. Various individuals are chairing projects that thus far include cooking and baking activities, visits to shut-ins, collecting clothing for the schools, and a nursing home visit. The church will also be involved with the large building projects that are being planned. Members also continue to volunteer at the bi-monthly food distribution at Crystal Cathedral. The outreach ministry is ongoing. A September emphasis will be the Alma Hunt State Missions Offering.

JRBA MISSIONS COMMITTEE REPORT

I. The churches of our association have experienced exciting times of sharing in VBS and revivals. Hopefully, we feel revived and are ready to move forward in carrying out our mission for Jesus individually and as churches.

II. Let us RISE AGAINST HUNGER as we faithfully set aside quarters and dollars for this very special mission effort. As we do so, money will be available for the biggest packing project ever this coming May.

III. OPERATION INASMUCH will be held in our association from September 30 – October 7. Let us choose mission projects that will truly bless the lives of many people and make plans to carry them out.

IV. BLUE RIDGE FOOD DISTRIBUTION dates for September are Friday, September 8, and Friday, September 22. Please join us at 9:30 AM on the distribution dates.

V. HOPE BOXES bless the lives of hundreds of children in Appalachia. I pray each of us will prepare one or more Hope Boxes and turn them in to our association by February, 2018. (Tar Wallet will serve as our collection point – the deadline will be announced later.)

If you still have current certification and are interested in being part of this effort, please contact Aaron Lee at [email protected] or call 1-800-255-2428 and ask for him.

ALL OTHERS: You can help, too! Your prayers and financial gifts are desperately needed at this time. Send checks to BGAV, 2828 Emerywood Parkway, Henrico, VA 23294. Put Disaster Relief – Hurricane Harvey on the memo line. Another way you can be involved is by packing Flood Buckets for the victims. A flyer has been sent to each church with a list of the items to pack in a Flood Bucket from Home Depot.

CHURCHES: A church is also needed to serve as a collection point for the Flood Buckets in our area. Pastors were notified of this request on August 28. If your church can serve in this way, please contact Dr. Jeff Cranford at [email protected] or by phone at 804-921-3945 a.s.a.p.

UPDATE ON STANDING ROCK 2017: In late July, 200+ Virginians traveled over 1600 miles to Standing Rock Indian Reservation. They gathered with WMUV’s Tipi Wakan Church partners, Pastor Boots and Jackie Marsh and Peter and Angela Adkins, along with several other community members, to worship God together before departing to nine different communities on the reservation. Teams were met by many in the communities who look forward to the teams’ arrival each year. It takes time to build relationships, for the people there to know the teams come to share and experience God’s love with them, which is why it is vital for teams to return year after year. In fact, 2018 marks the 10 th

year of the WMUV, Roanoke Valley Baptist Association, and Tipi Wakan Church partnership! The teams work in various ways in the community including providing children’s Bible School, adult fellowship and Bible study, sewing ministries, and food services. The team goes to each community they serve to deliver donated items from churches all across Virginia, including shoes, socks, and undergarments. The team also provides blood pressure and blood sugar checks and a mini carnival. Please join the team through prayer, donations, and participation next year. The dates for the trip will be July 22-27, 2018.

Operation InAsMuch is in a few weeks. I hope everyone has made plans to participate. The goal is 100% participation! This year we want to focus on working together as an Association, too. Plans for several projects are being made to build things that will help people in our community, and build relationships. Please see what the Lord would have you to do. As always, be prepared to share what the Lord has done for you.

10TeamEffort Mission Trip

The Youth Group of First Baptist Dillwyn attended the TeamEffort mission camp in Virginia Beach, VA, the week of June 18 -24, 2017. We stayed in the graduate apartments at Regent University. The camp provided lodging, a dining hall, and recreation. Each evening we had chapel at a local church, where we also enjoyed breakfast before heading to our worksite.

Our project included scraping and painting the garage doors, shutters, and trim on a home that was occupied by an elderly lady named Barbara and her daughter. We also power washed her home and sidewalks, repaired windows, removed vines from the side of the house, trimmed bushes, and did other yard work that was needed. We had three and a half days to work on the project. We returned to the camp each evenng for dinner and worship in the chapel.

Our free time began on Thursday afternoon and we spent time at the beach and riding go-karts. On Thursday evening we had the closing ceremony after chapel where everyone that participated was given a nail to pray over. This nail represented something that we have been “holding onto” and needed to give to God. We then nailed each of our nails into a cross. On Friday we spent the day at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and packed to return home on Saturday. A fellowship supper was held on August 20, 2017, at FBC. It was followed by a presentation of our trip. We presented Thelma Childress with a card and two dozen red roses for all of her support in collecting money for our trip.

We would like to thank everyone for their prayers, monetary donations, and support of our fund raisers. Those that attended were: Amanda Bryan, Austin Linthicum, Ashley Hellerstedt, Kaitlin Shumkaer, Cadence Campbell, Melissa Wood, Madison Pribble, Kaitlyn Hucks, Jennifer Taylor, Walter Linthicum, Marty Pribble, Larry Almond, Jacob Pribble, Eve Moxley, Minnie Wallace, Hannah Davis, Leah Moxley, and Garrett Taylor.
