President’s Message...

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to the following new members:

We have an assignment for each member of this club.....the National club, MBCA, and our club, MBCA-WI, both request that each of you members log into the new National web-site as members, and update your accounts. If you've never logged into the new website as a member using your membership number, please do it soon. It is quick and easy, and you can choose your own password, and most important, make sure your e-mail address is correct and added to your personal data. The National club is going to make a major effort in the future to use more electronic communications to contact members, and so it is necessary to have everyone's data be complete and correct. Your section is also going to use more electronic com-munications with regard to the Badger Star newsletter. And we will get all of your e-mail addresses from the MBCA database (our club roster). The major expense that we have as a club is the production of the bi-monthly newsletter, which is a requirement of every MBCA section. The printing, folding, stuffing, paper and postage that the club pays for every other month amounts to approximately greater than $400. That's about $2700 per year to produce and mail out 320 to 330 copies every other month, mailed to all of our members, the surrounding sections, and sev-eral officers of the national club. To reduce this cost, we will cut down on the number of paper copies we process as much as pos-sible. There are members who do not own computers, and they will still receive a paper copy in the mail, but if at all possible we need members to give us a current e-mail address (home or work will do), so we can cut this high cost to the club. In addition, we are building a new club website which has several advantages over the previous one. The new website should be complete by the 4th of July. The new website will be editable by several people (not just the webmaster), and it will allow us to post information faster and easier, and it will be more

of a one-stop-shop for club information. The Badger Star will continue to be posted on the website (in PDF format), and those who are receiving the newsletter by e-mail will actually be re-ceiving a link to the PDF file on the website. You will be able to access the latest newsletter (and any previous ones) on the web-site, and you can print out any and all pages on your computer printer that interest you. Another advantage of the new website will be an ex-panded Events Listing, with room for events from other sections and other parties who have notified us for our possible participa-tion. We also have a separate section for Drive to Dine events, and this should make things easier for us when looking up events and information pertaining to events. Don't forget the club Golf Outing at Songbird Hills on June 28th. The teams play best ball, which is a lot of fun for eve-ryone, even the bad golfers who seem to get in some nice drives and putts. And there are several prizes to be had for the longest drive, the longest putt, etc. Your 40 bucks will get you 9 holes of Golf, a golf cart, a meal after the game, 2 drinks from the club car, door prizes, a chance at the aforementioned prizes, and all the fun you can endure. Songbird Hills is a challenging course, which will make your game that much more satisfying if you can master it. See you there. On July 15th, International Motors is hosting a Techni-cal Session, so check the flyer for more details. You can enjoy some good food and drink, and take a look at the new GLK and the new 2010 E-class Mercedes which will be on display for us. See you there too. Jerry Zajicek 6-12-2009

Drive to Dine @ The Mineshaft On May 2nd, 24 members gathered for lunch at The Mine‐shaft restaurant in downtown Hartford. There were no complaints with the great food and drink, and afterward a birthday cake was presented (by the club) to long time member Marcella Bedore. The waitress crew joined in as 30+ people sang Happy Birthday to Marcella, and then we cut the cake. Apparently everyone had a great time, as the lunch did not conclude till 3 o'clock, when Dave and Marcella took home the remaining chocolate cake for enjoy‐ment later. Thanks to all who attended for a great time. More photos are on the front page. JZ

Happy Birthday, Marcella!

Popeye’s Nautical Restaurant in Lake Geneva

This Drive to Dine luncheon was held on May 30th at Pop‐eye’s nautical‐themed restaurant in Lake Geneva. Twenty‐eight (28) members, spouses and/or friends attended. After lunch six of our vehicles completed a map‐guided, hilly and winding drive around historic and scenic Geneva Lake as pro‐vided by our host, Bernd Kampe. The route included the historic villages of Williams Bay and Fontana. Others went

on a 1 or 2 hour tour of Geneva Lake in boats; viewing the beauty and 130‐year history of the lake and it’s many mansions. At least four people completed both the driving tour and the 2‐hour boat tour. A few others also went shopping in the many local shops. The weather was sunny, in the low 70’s (on shore) and perfect for driving

our Mercedes‐Benz automobiles and touring by boat. Bernd did a wonderful job preparing materials about the area,

maps for the driving tour, and information on the boar tours. A big thank you to Bernd for this fantastic event.

MBCA-WI Section Regional Event Tour of the Mississippi Great River Road

Oct 20-25th, 2009

We are planning an exciting 3-5 day fall color tour along the Mississippi Great River Road in mid-October. Our tour may start at Prairie du Chien where the Wisconsin River flows into the mighty Mississippi. We will drive WI Hwy 35 north to LaCrosse where we will stay overnight and hopefully embark on an authentic riverboat, the Julia Belle Swain, and drive up to Grandad's Bluff overlooking LaCrosse and the Mississippi valley. You would be able to join the tour at Prairie du Chien or La-Crosse, to suit your time schedule.

From LaCrosse, our Great River Road tour will continue on Hwy 35 north on the Wisconsin side thru scenic small towns, stopping along the way for sightseeing such as a lock & dam, Perot State Park and an apple orchard near Trempeleau (great apple pies there), a county park on the bluffs overlooking Alma, view the restored log cabin original homestead of Laura-Ingals Wilder a few miles east of Stockholm, etc. We will cross the Mississippi River into Red Wing, MN where we will probably stay a night. Red Wing is well known for its high quality boots and shoes and a pottery store. It also has an excellent old-fashioned downtown area, including an 1880's restored hotel w/restaurants (the St. James Hotel), a beautiful stone Amtrak station, great restaurants & an excel-lent bakery/deli.

Our tour continues next day heading south on MN Hwy 61 thru Lake City located on the shores of beautiful Lake Pepin (a huge, wide area of the river created by the lock & dam) and then into Waubesha, where the two "Grumpy Old Men" movies were filmed. Waubesha is also the home to the newly-built National Eagle Center. From Waubesha we continue to the small town of Kellogg which has a beautiful carousel with full-sized wooden animals which are hand-carved in the local shops as well as lots of old toy replicas on display.

Our tour continues south to Winona which is the largest city on the MN side of the river with lots to see and do. Our final night will be in Winona or LaCrosse which is only 30 miles further south. Sunday will be the drive back home.

Our intent is to allow every participant plenty of time to see and do those things along the Great River Road which they enjoy and share the stories of your adventures with others while at the mo-tels or when dining together in the evenings & mornings.

Here are two official state of MN and WI Great River Road websites which you might find of inter-est: www.mnmississippiriver.com/bluffs.cfm www.wigreatriverroad.org
