why we chooseto adoptHaving met later in life we have chosen to adopt a child for a couple of reasons. We know the possibility of conceiving naturally is slim and the bottom line is we simply want a family. The child’s race or ethnicity doesn’t matter to us; we are simply excited to become parents! It is our hope that we will be blessed with a child who will benefit from growing up and living with two people who have always wanted to have a family together. Love is love, no matter how it comes to you.

We live in Rhode Island in a spacious three-story home with our two cats; Emma and her sweet brother Jean Michel. Emma came into our lives last year after Emily’s mother passed away and is a real love. We feel so blessed to have her. Jean Michel was a stray kitten found in a neighbor’s backyard the night of a blizzard. We brought him in and he easily assimilated into our little family. Our home is filled with

paintings, books, cookbooks, furniture passed down from relatives and artwork from both sides of our families spanning three generations. It is our sanctuary and a place that is reflective of our creative spirits. We love our neighborhood, which oers so much in such a small radius. There are Montessori schools, parks, great sledding hills, a community center, Whole Foods, locally owned restaurants and a great independent bookstore all within walking distance.

our careers & lifestyleSix months out of the year we live and work on a very small island where Berke is the head chef of a wonderfully successful restaurant. Emily works at the restaurant as well, which is where we met, but she also makes and sells her pottery at the Farmers Markets and Craft Fairs. Working hard in the summer months affords us the ability to financially and creatively slow-down in the fall and winter months. Our community on the island is very strong. All the locals know each other and will help out or pitch in if ever need be. We feel very blessed to be part of such a unique lifestyle.

In the o-season Berke concentrates on his music and painting career. He sells his work through galleries; privately and to interior designers. Emily spends her days working in the studio building up her inventory for the summer season and focuses on the business aspect of selling her pottery through the Internet. We love this unique lifestyle as it provides us with quiet time to concentrate on our creative lives, allows us to work from home and spend quality time with each other.

We both come from very close-knit, dynamic families that are down to earth, loving and genuinely supportive of one another. This is a big part of what initially brought us together. Berke is from a big Texas family, while Emily and her two sisters are just as intensely connected. Your child will grow up in a similar household where they will be encouraged to be creative and mindful, to think about others and their experiences but also to love and respect themselves. Family dinner every night is something we both value and look forward to with our children. We grew up loving this sacred time where we either jumped in to set the table or helped our mothers make some part of dinner and cherished being an integral part of the family. Carrying on this ritual is something we do now and will do with your child. It’s a wonderful time when we come together to talk, laugh, and share what happened with our day and to reflect upon our lives.

Having both been to college we know the value of a rich and varied education. Emily taught Special Education for two years, which helped her realize everyone has dierent ways of learning. Finding wonderful schools where your child will be intellectually, creatively, and emotionally supported will be a priority and something we look forward to exploring.
