ANNUAL APPEAL This month, after years of study, 2 men are scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood. Dur-ing the years of preparation, they were supported by eve-ryone who made a gift to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. When you make a gift to the Appeal, YOU help meet the cost of priestly formation and education. Please support our seminarians by making a gift to the Appeal today.
A Few Simple Words…….from Fr. Robert May 6, 2018
Important Information On 62 Peck Street I have received several communications and
had a couple of conversations regarding the property that has been for sale since last summer across the street from our church. Yes I received permission from the Archdiocese to purchase the property, yes we had the money to do so and as I type this I suspect that either this week or next a young couple and their child will be the new owners.
Many people in the parish wanted us to buy that property and, after a lot of careful thought and prayer, I chose not to purchase it. Why? First of all, I felt that the price was just too high. I’m not sure what the closing price was, but the asking price was well over $320,000. No house in this neighborhood has sold for that price and it was well above what our parish realtor felt it was worth. It is also important to under-stand that the house needs work. The outside on the south side is deteriorating, the insulation in the house is minimal and the wiring in the house is knob and tube. The walls are all plaster. Our parish electrician told me it would cost at least $10,000 a floor to remediate and it would be a very difficult job. He was not really interest-ed in doing it. When a family buys a house they main-tain it and improve it and it appreciates, then they hope to sell if for a profit and benefit from their labors. Our long term plan was to tear the house down and in-crease the green space. There would be no financial benefit for the parish to purchase the property. In other words, the purchase of that house would not be an in-vestment but a liability. I felt that the money we would have used to purchase the house would have been better placed in our Berlin Catholic Trust. This decision would enable us to grow our resources for the future rather than be spent on a house that we would proba-bly tear down in the long term.
I’ve thought about all of these things for a long time and decided that St. Paul Church had existed for over 100 years without 62 Peck Street and we could continue to do so. I know some of you have very strong feelings about this and are not happy with me at all. You’ve made that abundantly clear. However, I did what I thought was right for the long term financial good of the parish and I stand by my decision. Only time will tell if I made the correct decision or not. Feel free to talk about me when I’m gone someday, “That Father Robert let that property slip through our hands,” or maybe you’ll say something like, “That Father Robert,
you know the one with the white beard, he cared about this parish as if he grew up here in town and made the right decision when it came to buying that house across the street.” Whatever the case, I followed my con-science and I am sorry I disappointed so many. Ministry Appreciation Dinner Every year our parish gathers the heads of all of our Ministries for an evening to express our appreciation for their labors. St. Paul Parish is blessed with many fine ministries and community outreach initiatives. This par-ish will only ever be what you guys make it. We have a lot to be proud of and grateful for. Special thanks to the Pastoral Council for organizing this event last Tuesday. On behalf of the whole parish I want to thank everyone who coordinates a ministry of our Parish. First Communions Our First Communions were beautiful and there will be a few more this week at the 9:00, 9:30 (At Sacred Heart) and the 10:30 Masses. Families are able to download the pictures and the videos of the First Com-munion Masses from our website from last week. The photos and videos for this week will be available in the near future. Thanks again to all of the catechists who made this day possible, and thanks again to the par-ents who cared enough about their children to bring them to Religious Education and make their First Com-munion. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You A protective barrier has been placed around our Pieta in the hope that it will deter people from going up close and touching the statue. Experience has shown that even though it is made of marble, it is still fragile. The other day I saw a beautiful little second grader jump up onto the pedestal, give Jesus a big kiss, and then shake the Blessed Mother's hand. There was no malice in her beautiful little heart and thank goodness there was no damage. I want the whole parish to know that our St. Paul Parish Ladies Guild paid for the whole project and their sacrifice is very much ap-preciated. People stop every day to pray in our prayer garden and now I think we can all breathe a little easier that our Pieta will be safer from spontaneous expres-sions of love and devotion. Thanks again Ladies.

NEED YOUR HELP! The arrival of warmer weather is a God-send! Last year, a group of young adults from the Parish would gather weekly for a bonfire to-gether to build community and enjoy each other’s compa-ny. They are excited to start again now that the weather is warmer and anyone in their 20’s is welcome. The Par-ish is looking for firewood to be donated to help sup-port these beautiful young adult events. Firewood do-nations can be brought to the Parish, but call the Parish Center Office before you bring it over. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Both our High School and Middle School groups have been spending time in prayer at Eucharistic Ado-ration. We adore Christ on the altar, who is present in His body, blood, soul, and divinity, through the Eucha-rist. Adoration is a special way to connect with God.

AN ANGEL GETS HIS WINGS "Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am. We are heart broken. Thank you everyone for all your support".
Kate James wrote these words on April 29 from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, England following the death of her 23- month old son, Alfie Evans. She and Tom Evans brought their son to the hospital when he was seven months old, following seizures. It was discovered that Alfie suffered from a degenerative neurologic disorder and he was eventually put on life support. Alfie’s parents wanted to seek further treatment elsewhere. The hospital resisted and insisted that his condition was irreversible; further treatment would not be in Alfie’s “best interest.” Kate and Tom ap-pealed, unsuccessfully, to the British High Court, and the European Court of Human Rights. The right of Kate and Tom to seek treatment or palliative care elsewhere were not recognized. Italy conferred citizen-ship on the child and an offer was made to transport Alfie to the Vatican’s Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital. Even the attempts of Pope Francis, made on behalf of little Alfie, were not enough to move the hearts of those who had tak-en control of Alfie’s future. Doctors were convinced Alfie would live only hours after the removal of life support. Brave, determined Alfie continued breathing on his own, for five days before breathing his last on Saturday, April 29, 2018. Sadly, the UKs’ interpretation of the law held that a life of permanent disability and dependency, whether long or short, is not worth living. Let us pray for the soul of Alfie, that he finds eternal comfort in the loving arms of our Lord. Let us pray for his parents, that they find solace and peace. Let us pray for humanity, that we always look for and see the value of human life, in all its’ stages and conditions

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Where did he go? Many times when we think of those who have died, we imagine escape from this world to a purely spiritual place. Jesus' Ascen-sion can leave us in a place of confu-sion. What happens to Jesus? And why does this matter to us?
The Ascension has been confirmed in the Creed for two millennia. In Je-sus' Ascension, we're invited to con-sider our own ultimate end. Regard-
less of death's reality now, we believe in the resurrection of the body and the reunification of body and soul. One day, earth and heaven will meet perfectly and without end. We anticipate this "new heaven and a new earth" at every Mass and throughout the beauty, truth, and love of the Church and her members. Today, celebrate a foreshadow-ing of the fullness we all await!

TIPS FOR COPING WITH ARTHRITIS May is Arthritis Aware-ness Month. More than 27 million Ameri-cans suffer with arthri-tis, and it's more com-mon than diabetes.
We've partnered with the Arthritis Foundation to help older adults learn how to put pain in its place. Managing the pain is possible. The best way to beat pain is to stop it before it starts. Here are several ways to get started:
Pace yourself Switch between heavier and lighter tasks. Balance activity with planned rest breaks, and don’t overdo it.
Protect your joints Avoid activities that stress your joints. Use splints, braces, and assistive devices if needed, and practice good posture.
Control your weight Losing just one pound of body weight will take four pounds of pressure off your knees. Shedding extra weight reduces Pain and improves function. The best way to lose weight is physical activity combined with a healthy diet.
Increase physical activity It’s important to move safely and wisely. Talk to your doctor about types and amounts of activity that can help you build strength, increase endurance, and maintain flexibility.
Get a good night’s sleep Better sleep equals less pain. To improve your sleep, get regular physical activity, avoid alcohol and caffeine in the evening, go to bed and get up at the same time every day, and avoid stress before bedtime.
