Mersey MonsterThere have been reports recently of a monster swimming in the river Mersey. People claim to have seen a large

beast swimming slowly just beneath the surface of the water.

Workmen who were excavating Liverpool’s Old Dock found a huge footprint of a monster. The footprint was outside the entrance to this cave which had once been below the water. It is believed by some people that the monster may have lived in the cave at some time but has now moved to another cave somewhere in the Mersey.

Scientists have made this casting of the footprint. It gives us some idea of how big the monster is and how the foot of the monster would look.

Julie’s storySome people claim to have seen a large beast in the river. About four years ago a young woman named Julie was sailing to Belfast from Liverpool. The ferry was leaving at 10-30. Julie was standing on the deck looking across at the Liverpool water front. when she noticed something moving through the water in a straight line coming up from the Albert Dock.“It was big enough for us to see it on the Pier Head side,” said Julie. “It stayed on top of the water. After about ten minutes of watching it I noticed four men further down the deck watching it. It swam right past the Pier Head heading out to the Irish Sea.”

Julie’s story“By then it was getting dark,” Julie continued. “The ferry left a bit late so it was quite dark when we passed the Alexander Dock and there it was! Still heading down towards the Gladstone Dock I could see it by the light from the docks. Since then I have asked loads of people what would swim on top of the water for so long? Seals and dolphins all have their own swimming action but this stayed on top. And no, I had not had a drink,” she said.

So there it is. A monster in the river Mersey. The leader of Liverpool City council Joe Anderson said today, “We need as much help as we can get to catch this beast. Nobody is quite sure what it looks like but maybe people could help us find out. We think it used to live in the cave but we’re not sure where it is now. Could you think where it might live? There’s an awful lot we need to find out and we need all the help and ideas we can get.”
