In the wake of Fase, which by 1982 had already been presented in Belgium, the Netherlands and Great Britain, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker foundedRosas in 1983. Her company's debut creation was Rosas danst Rosas (withmusic by Thierry De Mey and Peter Vermeersch). Their first tour took themfrom Belgium to Spain via the Netherlands, Switzerland, France and Italy.

With the addition of a new work, Elena's Aria, Rosas toured Europe againin 1984. After 1985, there was a year devoted to touring Fase (four movements to the music of Steve Reich accompanied by the ensemble Steve Reichand Musicians) and another tour with Rosas danst Rosas. In 1986, Bartok /Aantekeningen was presented together with Rosas danst Rosas in Switzerland,Canada, England, Italy, Mexico and the United States (Rosas danst Rosaswas presented as part of the 1986 Next Wave Festival).

In 1987, Rosas produced two works. The first was Heiner Muller's triptychVerkommenes Uter / Medeamaterial / Landschaft mit Argonauten, directedby Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The second, Mikrokosmos-Monument /Selbstportrat mit Riech und Riley (und Chopin ist auch dabei) / In zartfliessender Bewegung-Quatuor Nr. 4 was choreographed to music by Bartokand Ligeti (performed live, according to her most consistent demand). Elena'sAria came to BAM for the 1987 Next Wave Festival. Ottone, Ottone, basedon Monteverdi's L'lncoronazione de Poppea was created in 1988.

At that time Rosas' work began to attract many international prizes. In 1988,Rosas danst Rosas was given a Bessie Award. 1990 saw the creation of Stella set to music by Gybrgy Ligeti and Achter/and-November 90 to music by Gybrgy Ligeti and Eugene Ysaye performed liveby Rolf Hind and Irvine Arditti. 1990 was also the year in which Jean-LucDucourt, a member of Rosas since 1987, took up a new position-from Stellathrough Mozart Concert Arias in 1992, he served as Ms. De Keersmaker'sassistant in the artistic leadership of the company, sharing with her the workof conceiving, directing and, in some cases, designing lighting for productions.

The following year Achter/and and Stella went on tour-the latter was giventhe 1991 London Dance and Performance Award. Meanwhile, Ottone, Ottonebecame the starting point for a video made by Walter Verdin under the titleOttone, Ottone / 1991 .

Acclaimed by audiences and press for their powerful performances both liveand recorded, The Duke Quartet has established itself as one of Britain'smost exciting chamber music groups. At home with music of all genres, theirapproachable style has won them a considerable following around the world.

Signed exclusively to Collins Classics, their first release, featuring works byBarber, Dvorak and Glass (Collins CD 13862), won worldwide criticalacclaim and was selected at the 1995 Cannes Classical Music Awards asone of the world's top three debut CDs of the year. Their second release was theculmination of a close working relationship with the renowned South Africancomposer Kevin Volans. The result of this collaboration, the new 5th StringQuartet Dancers on a Plane and a reworking of the 4th String Quartet TheRamannjan Notebooks (Collins CD 14172) met with similar acclaim.

The Quartet's work has ranged from performing their own arrangements forChannel 4 documentaries to appearing in New York on the David Lettermanshow with The Pretenders. Their skills have been equally coveted in thedance world. A world tour with Rosas in 1996 and the London premiereof their composition The Thrill is Gone commissioned by the Arts Councilfor Union Dance are among their recent accomplishments. Other notableengagements include the Ives Festival at the Barbican with two concerts thatwere both broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and performances in Russia wherethey played Volan's String Quartet NO.5 with Siobhan Davies Dance Company.

Trinity College at Oxford provides the Quartet with a residency enablingthem to engage in concentrated rehearsals and pass on their enthusiasmfor chamber music to students at the college.

Their recordings for Collins Classics have continued with a disc of Russianquartets by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Schnittke (Collins CD 14502),and the release last year of Baltic Elegy (Collins CD 14752) with music byArvo Part, Peteris Vasks and Erkki-Sven Tuur.
