“So the last will be first and the first last”. - Matthew 20:16

You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to

this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others

as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not

hoard them for our own use. Our sincere gratitude

and cheerful generosity will help us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

Divine Mercy Parish would like to thank our families who are currently giving electronically. You may not see these fellow parishioners place an envelope in the basket every week, but their consistent giving does not go unnoticed. Each

month our parish receives a steady and predict-able stream of income from

those donors who have made the commitment to give to God

first by having a designated contribution

automatically transferred to our parish through our Online

Giving Program. If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe, and secure way of giving,

Today, we celebrate the feast of Saint Matthew, apostle and evangelist. In MT 20: 1-16, we are

presented with the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Some workers begin working at dawn. Others began working later at 9:00. Still other

workers started at noon, 3:00, or 5:00. At the end of the day, the landowner paid them all the usual

daily wage. Some of the workers grumbled because they had worked more hours. The

landowner replied, “Are you envious because I am generous?”, (MT 20:15). A LIFETEEN author states,

“God always rewards us, no matter when in our lives we enter the vineyard.” The LIFETEEN author further states, “God’s generous mercy is not ours to judge, even if it seems unfair. At LIFETEEN and Edge we discuss what the LIFETEEN author says about how God’s “mercy is given to all who seek the Lord.” Please join us as we discuss fairness, generosity and the love of Jesus. Prayer Blanket Ministry

Relief to the suffering, peace to the fearful. May each Prayer Blanket Recipient know they are not alone. We are praying for their healing

and comfort. This beautiful act of sacrifice before the Lord trans-forms this blanket into a prayer blanket whose very threads be-

come interwoven with pleas for healing on behalf of the recipient. To request a Prayer Blanket for someone who is ill or in need,

St. Pio of Pietrelcina 1887-1968

“Pray, hope and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and He will hear your prayer.”

This week we celebrate the feast of St. Pius of Pietrelcina, affectionately known as Padre Pio. He was born into an extremely poor Italian family and entered the Capuchin order at the age of sixteen. Throughout his life he experienced great suffering through physical

illnesses and from constant physical and

spiritual attacks from the devil. He taught that,

“The life of a Christian is nothing

but a perpetual strug-gle against self. There is no flowering of the soul to the beauty of its perfection, except at the price of pain.”

He practiced great

devotion to Our Lady and promoted the daily recitation of the rosary. At the age of thirty-one he received the visible wounds of the crucified Christ

which he bore until his death fifty years later.

As a reader of souls, he developed the reputation of being a great confessor, and was a spiritual counsellor and director to people all over the world. He used his many spiritual gifts for the healing of countless souls

and bodies.

St. Pio pray for us in these troubled times. Help us to learn to trust God totally and never give up.

San Pío de Pietrelcina 1887-1968

“Ora, espera y no te preocupes.

Ayúdanos a aprender a confiar totalmente

Fr. Cooper’s Corner

A Great Innovation for Growing in Faith

For those who want to grow in their knowledge of the faith, there is never been a greater time to be alive. We have ready access not only to the Bible in every spoken language but also to so many great commentaries, websites, and podcasts, that help us to understand and live it. There are scores of good Catholic publishing houses printing inspiring works from authors old and new. There is free digital access in most modern languages to the works of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church and almost every spiritual classic. There are now several 24-hour Catholic television stations and hundreds of Catholic radio stations that are no longer restricted to particular geographical areas but can be streamed anywhere in the world. There are Catholic newspapers and magazines that through the web have increased their scope to form and inform from an authentically Catholic perspective.

There are millions of authentically Catholic websites and blogs, showing the beauty of the faith, carrying out the crucial work of apologetics, presenting Catholic commentary on every topic under the sun, and providing a digital narthex for millions. There are the extraordinary apostolates of Bishop Robert Barron’s Word on Fire, Matthew Kelly’s Dynamic Catholic, the Augustine Institute’s Formed, and Ascension Press’ array of scriptural and theological courses, which help people better understand the faith, live it, and teach it to others. These are all key parts of what the popes have called the new evangelization. While there is an undeniable crisis of faith today in the West leading in various parts to reductions in parishes and Catholic schools, sacramental practice, vocations, and public influence, these new forms of outreach are all the buds of a new springtime that inspire hope, strengthen faith, and build Catholic culture in the midst of the scorching rays of aggressive secularization.

The Covid-19 pandemic, while bringing much death and suffering, has also out of necessity mothered various inventions. Some, like parking lot confessions and parking lot Masses, will not outlast the pandemic. Others, however, will. The streaming of online Masses, while obviously not the same as participation in person, is a great gift to those in places where faith is struggling, whether due to persecution or poor pastoral service or anything in between. My cousins told me in April that they loved attending the livestream Masses of Fr. Mike Schmitz from the Diocese of Duluth, one of the U.S.’s most capable priestly evangelists, especially to young people. Since then, I have been told by friends from various parts of the country as well as from Trinidad, India, Spain, and Nigeria that they have been watching Fr. Schmitz as well and are grateful that the pandemic has allowed his gifts to be shared beyond northern Minnesota. Some have told me that, even though they love their parish priests and fellow parishioners, they have longed for more inspiring preaching and more conspicuously devout celebrations of the Mass. The pandemic’s livestreams have made that possible. It is one illustration of the “catholicity” of our faith that many faithful are praying will continue.

I think one of the innovations occasioned by the pandemic that will and ought to last is the phenomenon of virtual Catholic conferences. Covid-19 hit the U.S. right as we were preparing for Lent, when many Diocesan men’s and women’s conferences, educational, and Eucharistic conferences take place. When almost all of them needed to be canceled, some Catholic apostolic entrepreneurs tried to convert that disappointment into opportunity and host a conference online. Speakers and interest Catholics responded. And in the last few months, there have been massive virtual Men’s and Women’s Conferences, Theology of the Body Conferences, Marriage and Family Conferences, as well as conferences on chastity, Catholic Social Teaching, the Eucharist, apologetics, Catholic formation, and other themes. Two of them had over 60,000 attendees. Another had nearly 40,000.

Page 9: July 19, 2020 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time …Today’s gospel passage (Matthew 13:14-23) from St. Matthew is an example of this type of teaching. Jesus used many metaphors to

Page 9

Over the course of my priesthood, I have had the chance to speak at many Catholic conferences and workshops. As a pastor, I always prioritized bringing as many of my parishioners to such events as I could. Their value goes beyond the powerful talks, sacraments, and opportunity for prayer that are the routine fare. It is being surrounded by so many others like them seeking to grow in faith and to rejoice in it. While Catholics can sometimes feel like outliers in their schools, workplaces, and even sometimes homes, when they attend such conferences they recognize that they are not isolated tapers in the midst of strong headwinds, but rather a united torch with a mission to ignite the world with the light of faith.

I wondered how the online conferences would be able to substitute for that experience. It was easier than I thought. At a typical in-person conference, there is a finite program with four to five speakers over a given day. The virtual conferences were able to have several dozen speakers watched on demand, in the order the viewer wished, over three days (Friday through Sunday). The fact that so many speakers signed up to share their gifts on related themes already created a baseline of community. That tens of thousands of others were interested in attending the conference added to a sense that the Holy Spirit was working to unite despite the isolation caused by social distancing. And most of the conferences had breakout sessions over Zoom where participants could interact directly with the speakers, ask questions, and engage with Conference-goers from across the world. It is not the same as in-person contact, but nevertheless, the conferences produced a palpable sense of Catholic community.

Because of the extended format and greater number of speakers, the online conferences were able to deliver content even better, I think, than in-person conferences. Not only is there a greater variety to meet the heterogenous needs of attendees, but the different approaches, experiences, and expertise of speakers make for a broader and deeper learning experience. Being able to rewind to hear an important point missed, or to watch a whole talk again, can clearly assist comprehension. There is also something powerful about the immediacy of a speaker looking right at you and, albeit through a screen, speaking directly to you, rather than addressing a multitude of hundreds or thousands from a stage.

The financial model of the virtual conferences likewise is innovative and a win-win-win for attendees, speakers, and organizers. Attendees are generally able to watch the talks for free during the weekend, which makes the content accessible to all, regardless of their financial situation. Those who would like to have access to some special talks and live sessions during the conference, or to the videos on demand afterward, can sign up for “premium packages,” but those fees are normally far less than what one would pay to go to in-person conferences.

Speakers are not given stipends but receive generally half of the proceeds of all those who sign up for the premium packages through their recommendation. If speakers have large social networks, their own apostolates can do very well. The other half of the fees go to the organizers to cover the computer and other costs incurred for a virtual conference as well as to strengthen their apostolates financially, which is particularly important during pandemic-related financial shortfalls.

Since these virtual conferences have been so successful, many are now trying to organize similar events. There will only be so many weekend conferences that even zealous Catholics will have the stamina to attend. But even after the pandemic has abated and in-person conferences are able to be held again, I believe—and am hoping—that the virtual conference model will remain an option, since it is able inexpensively, measurably, and conveniently to expand the number of people able to attend such powerful opportunities to grow in faith.

4:00 pm Mass Entrance All Are Welcome 1. Let us build a house where love can dwell And all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell How hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, Rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

Refrain All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. 2. Let us build a house where prophets speak, And words are strong and true, Where all God's children dare to seek To dream God's reign anew. Here the cross shall stand as witness And a symbol of God's grace; Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:

3. Let us build a house where love is found In water, wine and wheat: A banquet hall on holy ground, Where peace and jus ce meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, Is revealed in me and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us: 4. Let us build a house where hands will reach Beyond the wood and stone

DIVINE WORSHIP AND SACRED MUSIC

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Memorare

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Family Prayer

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times or war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

Communion I Am the Bread of Life 1. I am the Bread of life. You who come to me shall not hunger; and who believe in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father beckons. And I will raise you up, and I will raise you up, and I will raise you up on the last day. 2. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and if you eat of this bread, you shall live forever, you shall live forever. And I will raise you up, and I will raise you up, and I will raise you up on the last day. 3. Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of his blood, and drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you. And I will raise you up, and I will raise you up, and I will raise you up on the last day.

Communion Table of Life Refrain All who thirst, come to the water. All who hunger, eat without price. Why spend your wages on what fails to sa sfy? Come to the table of life, table of life. 1. Come to me all who need rest, and be sa sfied. All who are weary will find that my burden is light. For the bread that I give will not perish, but will bring you life. 2. This bread that I break is my flesh, take and eat. This cup now poured out is my blood for a world in need. I lay down my life so you might come and follow me. 3. Dance now with joy before God whose mercy runs free. The mountains will break into song for a mighty king. The trees will clap hands for our God. God is great indeed! Memorare

Amen.

Oración a San Miguel Arcángel

Registrations for our Religious Education programs, Elementary Catechesis (Grades K-5th), Edge (6th-8th grade), and

Life Teen (9th-12th grade) are currently ongoing.

ALL families who have children who are currently not attending Catholic school are encouraged to partici-pate. This year, Elementary Catechesis, Edge, and Life Teen will all be on one form.

Parish Catechesis will officially start around mid-September.

An important change this year, because of the current pandemic, is that we will not be meeting in-person on Tuesday evenings. Instead, this program will be an “at-home/virtual” family Catechesis

program. Our volunteers will still be involved, but there will be a greater emphasis on family participation and parent formation in addition to the faith formation of our children. Families and volunteers will also have the option to participate in live video group sessions, as well as be able to meet with Jacques and/or Ryan in-person.

While we will not be able to meet in-class, this will still give families an opportunity to grow closer in their faith and build a closer relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, understanding of the scriptures, and most importantly, growing in love for one another. Of course, our hope is that despite this year being more “virtual,” that the classes who are having live video sessions will still offer an opportunity for community between the children and their families, truly forming a Divine Mercy Parish family. Throughout the year we will have lessons as well as FUN activities on God, the Trinity, Mary, the Saints, and the Sacraments.

For our Sunday nights, all teens in grades 7th-12th grade, whether you attend Catholic school or non-Catholic school, will be invited to participate in-person at the Parish Community Center. These sessions will be from 7:00 PM-8:45 PM and will be happening for all high school teens. These nights will be different from our Life Teen and Edge portions, as those will be more focused on families of teens who do not attend Catholic school.

We are also looking for volunteers. Whether you have volunteered in the past, or this will be your first year, all adults from college-aged (18 years old and older) and up are invited to volunteer as a Catechist, co-Catechist, or assistant. Volunteers who are interested in serving in any capacity, whether planning lessons, participating in leading live video sessions, or assisting in any additional faith formation, may talk to Jacques or Ryan.

All Registration forms are available in the Narthex, and on the website. For more information about how Religious Education will work this year for participants, families, and volunteers, please check the website, read the first few pages of the Registration form (or volunteer form), or contact the Parish Office and ask to speak with the Director of Religious Education, Jacques Delouche or the Youth Minister, Ryan Foulon.

RCIA Process – Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

We are inviting everyone who desires to be baptized, interested in joining the Catholic Church, and/or those who wish to receive the Sacraments of First Communion and/or Confirmation to talk to us about RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults).

English RCIA meets on Monday nights, and Spanish RCIA meets Thursday nights. While the official group sessions will not begin until September, we do ask that anyone who is interested or desiring the Sacraments to contact the Parish Office or Jacques Delouche directly as soon as possible, so we can find a time to meet.

We do offer individual sessions during the year for those who are either unable to meet on Monday or Thursday nights, as well for those who would prefer to meet outside the group. Finally, because of the current Pandemic, we are offering virtual sessions for those who feel safer meeting over video and/or phone as opposed to In-person.

Sign-up forms are in the back of church and on the website! We would love to be able to talk with you too. If you have any questions about the RCIA Process, the Catholic faith, or you are interested in talking with us and joining us in your faith journey, please pick up a form in the Narthex, download from the website, call the Parish Office, or e-mail Jacques Delouche at [email protected].

If you are interested in volunteering or serving as support, you may also contact Jacques Delouche at the same e-mail.
