Bathford Cricket ClubDue to the wet start to the season and the loss of 3-4 sessions, we feel it would be inappropriate to insist on new members paying the full £20 membership, therefore we have created a second option. For those who would like a sponsored shirt/cap the cost will still be £20, but for those who do not, we have reinstated the nightly £1 charge.Paul Merrett

The club is very grateful to David Gay, who has kindly donated a new scoreboard to the club. It is a great relief now that the numbers don't fly off when the wind blows!

So far, the weather has been kinder to us on Saturdays than last year: we have yet to lose a Wiltshire League match to nature, though the U13s on Tuesday and the Midweek XI on Wednesdays have been less fortunate.

Good luck to all our teams next month.

Bathford Guides Trip To CheddarWith comments from Becky, Tasha, Flo, Sarah, Jessica, Thea, Rose and Louise.

We arrived at Cheddar Youth Hostel at 10am on Saturday 14 June. After our goodbyes, we quickly set off to the village where there was lots to do. We went to the Museum of Prehistory – it was a bit freaky but worth it. We learnt how our ancestors survived and about the history of Cheddar. We walked back to the Youth Hostel for lunch and to meet Flo, who had a music exam in the morning. Then we went on the tour bus round the Gorge. The guide pointed out all the great views like the Pinnacles and even some goats! Then we went to Cox’s Cave: it was really dark and led on to the crystal quest. The dragon blew smoke and made us jump. We also climbed up Jacob’s ladder which had 274 steps. We climbed to the top of the look-out tower where there was a really great view over the whole of Cheddar. We were 31km from Bath. Then we went on a VERY tiring 3 mile walk which took us 2 hours. Finally it was time to go back to the Youth Hostel but we made a pit stop to buy some food.We cooked our own main course and pudding. We made jacket potatoes and pancakes which were delicious, even if it did take a long time and make a lot of smoke. In the evening we made some 3D cards; they were great! On Sunday we went to Gough’s cave and we had cool audio guides. It’s the largest show cave in England. After that was more shopping to buy any last minute Father’s Day presents! To finish off we had a tour round a cheese factory. It takes 250L of milk to make ONE Cheddar cheese. We ate nearly all the

tasters and they were very nice. After that it started to pour with rain and we rushed back to the Youth Hostel. Unfortunately we still got soaking wet but it didn’t really matter in the end. I think we’d all agree it was a very successful weekend.

Bathford Link NewsSummer Tea PartyThis event took place on 19 June in the Parish Room. Although it had previously taken the form of a Garden Party, it had lately encountered so many instances of bad weather that it was decided to move indoors on a permanent basis. The Chairman, Jack Mackay, welcomed a goodly company of Link users, drivers and supporters. The hall had been beautifully decorated by the ladies of the Management Committee who were also responsible for the splendid tea. Entertainment was provided by the Ladies Singing Group, directed by Elisabeth Jackson, and who provided a popular programme of songs, in some of which the audience were able to participate. The grand finale was an adaptation of a song from “Oliver” which paid tribute - in a humorous way - to Link’s stalwart band of volunteer drivers! Many expressions of appreciation have been received.Link also records it’s thanks to Bathford Nurseries for the loan of potted plants to decorate the hall.If you can give a little spare time to help further Link’s work, do please contact the undersigned.

Dear FriendsThe most-watched TV programme in Israel around AD30 was a show called ‘The Disciple’. (You could get it here on Sky Digital.) A ‘disciple’ is what we might call an ‘apprentice’ today. ‘12 disciples … 12 jobs’ was the strap line to the show. Each week ‘the Boss’ would give his 12 disciples a series of tasks to complete and a week later they would meet him in the ‘boardroom’ to discuss how they had got on. It was hilarious viewing: they all thought they were rather special to be one of the 12; they thought they knew it all - one of them even thought he knew better than the Boss at one point!; they argued about who was the most important; they blamed one another when things went wrong; they felt pretty smug when things went right. But when they came face to face with the Boss each week, they found they had very little to say; the excuses and justifications they had so carefully prepared suddenly seemed rather lame and shabby when he walked into the boardroom and looked at them. Those boardroom sessions were the real highlight of the show. Each week the 12 would-be disciples found that the Boss knew exactly what they had got up to and each week they were completely humbled as he went on loving them, forgiving them and trusting them. Slowly, as the weeks went by, they began to learn that being this man’s ‘disciple’ was not at all what they had expected. ‘The Disciple’ is the longest running show in TV history (in fact, it pre-dates TV). The next series begins whenever you want it to. All you have to do to get on the show is be ready to admit the truth about yourself, want to be loved and accepted for who you are, be up for the greatest adventure life can offer, and prepared to follow this ‘Boss’ wherever he leads you and to receive his

forgiveness and his trust in you every day of your life. If that’s you, then … you’re hired!

A couple of weeks ago, we had the most fantastic party for pre-school children in the Vicarage garden. 36 little ones came - aged from 9 days to 4 years old! - with mums, dads, grandmas and one grandpa. They had a wonderful time playing with the games, bouncing on the trampoline and eating the delicious party food. And the children loved it as well! If you’d like to come and join in the fun next year, do let us know!

On Saturday, 12 July from 4pm we are holding a Village BBQ at Church Farm, Pump Lane, to which everyone is invited. Please see the flyer in this Bulletin for details.

Then on Sunday 13 July at 10am it is our Village Service on the Green, outside the British Legion, where we will be giving thanks to God for the life of our village and in particular this year praying for the future of our shop. Everyone is warmly invited to come and to stay for refreshments afterwards.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS852486, 859007

[email protected] www.bathford.net

Post Office ClosureThe last day of trading at the Post Office in Bathford will be Tuesday 15 July. The Parish Council would like to thank Iqbal and Masuma for operating the Post Office and their contribution to the life of Bathford over so many years and wishes them the very best in their retirement.

Kill Your Speed The Parish Council requests drivers to cut their speed to 20mph in Dovers Park and Mountain Wood past the school. The roads get very busy at school opening and closing times and a reduction in speed to 20mph will help to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians during these times.

Mobile LibraryThe mobile library visits Bathford Thursday fortnightly on the following dates 10 & 24 July, 7 & 21 August, 4 & 18 September, 2, 16 & 30 October, 13 & 27 November and 11 December. The stops are in Mountain Wood arriving 3.05pm departing 3.30pm, Ashley Road arriving 3.35pm departing 4.00pm and Church Street arriving 4.05pm and departing 4.30pm.

Neighbourhood WatchThe council would like the whole of the parish covered by the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, but there are roads not represented by a contact person at present, particularly Garstons. Do you live in Garstons and could you volunteer to be a Neighbourhood Watch contact person for this area? Two or more

contact persons would be ideal. The role of the contact person is to receive alerts via the Neighbourhood Watch system and advise their neighbours of any risks in the area or pass on crime prevention advice. It is not time consuming. If you think you can help then please contact the Clerk or the council's Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator Jean Vesey on tel. 858462.

Zero Waste Challenge Week

This takes place from Monday 29 September to Sunday 5 October and BANES are inviting organisations to take part. The challenge is open to any community group large or small and the aim is to reduce the amount of waste thrown away by trying to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost instead. BANES are holding a briefing event at Culverhay School, Rush Hill, Bath on Wednesday 16 July from 7-8pm (refreshments from 6.45pm). If you would like to attend the briefing event or take part in the challenge then contact Sarah George email [email protected] tel. 394394.

Christian Aid WeekChristian Aid Week, May 2008 raised £1,582 plus £230 tax refund. The money has been and will continue to help people to transform their communities –whatever their background or religion –by providing healthcare, education, seeds, tanks to collect rainwater and a time to smile. Many thanks.Martin Wright

Hope & Homes For ChildrenWe would like to thank the village for the generous sponsorship and support given for our bike ride from Bath to Tours from May 11 - 28. The money raised is not yet fully accounted for, but we will give a final figure in the next Bulletin. Suffice to say that we were overwhelmed with everyone's kindness to us in a venture that was new to all of us and which enabled us to visit our twinned village of Artannes, where we were also well received and supported.

Coffee Mornings as usual on Thursdays 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 July from 10.30 to noon in Bathford Parish Hall.

The Plant Sale, held by kind permission of Philip and Ann Harris at Church Farm in May, raised £450 - again, many thanks for all the support.

On 19 July we are holding an event to celebrate the achievement of over £100,000 raised in the last 7 years by Bathford for the charity "Hope and Homes for Children".
