advertising we are bombarded within our culture is designed todeliberately engender a sense ofdissatisfaction with our lives so thatwe will always pursue the bigger, better and more exciting; the (notvery) subliminal message given is“ordinary is substandard”.I have recently done a shortphotography course and the lion’sshare of this was spentphotographing ordinary objects inthe local area that I had walked pastmany times before and yet had notreally noticed. I saw beauty andpotential that previously hadremained hidden as I rushed by. Weare surrounded by beauty burstingout all around us in our village at themoment, the extraordinary in theordinary. And it’s not just objects andscenery. One of the most lifegivingaspects of my role is the joy ofordinary encounters andconversations with people; these arethe things which nurture, encourageand sustain. And so while the big festivals in theChristian year can evoke awonderful sense of celebration andpraise to God, Ordinary Timereminds us that God isn’t just to befound in the special places or timesbut that he is there in the dailyrhythm of life with all its ups anddowns. If we will press the pausebutton and reflect, even for a fewmoments, we may find much toenjoy and gain contentment from theordinary days of life. With my love and prayersJane

From the Vicarage.....We have just entered what theChurch calendar calls “OrdinaryTime”. Ordinary time is exactly whatit says it is, ordinary; the timebetween the great festivals. SinceChristmas, which of course is in itselfone of the great festivals, we havealso celebrated Easter, Ascensionand Pentecost.I, like many clergy, feel ratherrelieved to have some ordinarytimedays that are not special but normal.Unsurprisingly, “ordinary” is not aword favoured by those who work inmarketing; it sounds rather dull andboring. If a friend recommended arestaurant to you, in which theydescribed the food as “ordinary”, youprobably wouldn’t be rushing tomake a reservation.Ordinary however is an importantconcept. It is the canvas againstwhich we can appreciate the special. How easy it is to always be lookingahead, to put all our efforts andenergies into the special days andevents, or even wish away the hereand now, rather than live in themoment. We live most of our livesdoing the ordinary things of life;getting dressed, making meals, going to work and doing the thingsthat are necessary but not exciting. Ifwe cannot find some way of livingcontentedly with the everyday, werisk locking ourselves into a life ofrestlessness, dissatisfaction anddisappointment. At times it seems as though the

THE BATHFORD VILLAGESHOP NEEDS YOUR HELP....!At the BEFA (Bathford EnterpriseFor All) AGM last month plans wereunveiled to refurbish the shop tomake it better less congested, brighter and with improved displaysand layout. To do this of course needs funds! We already have a considerablesum set aside specifically forrefurbishment but as ever, it’s notquite enough, so we are offeringvillagers an opportunity to getinvolved by sponsoring a specificitem in the refurbishment shelving, lighting, carpet tiles, etc.Contributions towards larger itemswould also be very welcome, and ifyou aren't already a BEFA member,do think about it (£10).We will be making a photographicrecord of the project, and will list allour sponsors once it is on display. The plans are on view in the shopso you can choose exactly howyou’d like to make a difference. Thisis a great way to support thecommunity so please pop in andpick up a sponsorship form 30June is our deadline…….

THE BATHFORD VILLAGESCARECROW COMPETITIONFor many, many years the villageallotments held a competition for thebest allotment scarecrow and itbecame much admired by the rest ofthe village who trooped up to viewthem in numbers. Some four years ago it was decidedto give everyone a chance to join inthe fun and we regularly get some25/30 scarecrows distributed aroundthe village, skulking behind or overhedges, standing boldly in doorwaysor hanging off walls, anywhere aslong as they are visible from the road. Then our village Primary School tookthe opportunity to include it in theirEnvironment Week and so each classnow also produces one.It will be judged on Saturday 15June with prizes in three groups: aWurzle Gummidge, an ‘AnythingGoes’ and a Children’s class. So come on give it a go; the WurzleGummidge requires simply a postwith a cross bar and some oldclothes!Last year, being the Jubilee, therewas a great emphasis on the Queen, but there is no particular theme to

work to, we just want the whole thingto be fun.The judges will be accompanied bya photographer and on Sunday 16June (and for the next few days), amap of the village locating eachscarecrow, with a trail, will beobtainable in the Community Shopfor £1 (for the shop!) so that theycan be viewed by all.Mike S Smith
