// FEATURED GIGS. Words by Sarah Brogden & Stephanie Stevens-Wades

// After earning themselves a reputation as a charismatic and convincing live act, London-based quartet Sondura, meaning ‘hard sound’ will be delivering just that to the Joiners on Sunday 5th July. They have struck upon a uniquely powerful and accessible signature sound that gives a fresh and invigorating collision of styles. Propelled furiously along by the air-tight rhythm section of bassist Steve Dillon and drummer Fred Green they will be showcasing songs from their debut 3-track EP, alongside brand new material. “We want people to remem-ber our songs. We want people to leave our gigs saying ‘for f*** sake! I can’t get that song out of my head!’ you know? That’s what it’s all about for us.”

// Glasslights emerged at the start of December last year, with a neat set of barnstorming epic indie anthems. They’ve since been turning heads across the south of England with their fantastic live shows. Everywhere they go the response is the same: a quality band, playing brilliant songs; songs that stay with you and you can fall in love with. 2009 really is theirs for the taking, along with the release of their debut single ‘Someone Like Me’, they also have a jam packed schedule of gigs booked up and down the UK in the coming months, be sure not to miss out and catch them at the Joiners on Monday 13th July.

// Norwich based band The Kabeedies started to make their mark back in 2007 after performing for BBC Blast’s showcase in Hyde Park. Since then, the group have revelled in the glory of becoming an acknowledged act, playing many festivals on The BBC’s ‘Introducing’ stage. Their music settles nicely between indie and punk, sending off all the right signals with both male and female vocals. It’s this blend that gives The Kabeedies their unique energy with their ability to create witty tracks with a catchy spin making them quirky and fun. With a new album along the way, its highly recommended that you grab any chance to see these guys, playing The Joiners on Monday 20th July.

// Lead singer of early 90’s hitmakers The Wonder Stuff; Miles Hunt will be giving The Joiners a taste of old favourites and new material (along with band mate Erica Nockalls). Miles has gained a strong fan-base for his current solo work with his album ‘Catching More Than We Miss’ accentuating his great musical talent. His impeccable ability as a guitarist and songwriter makes him the pinnacle of acoustical sound and there is no doubt he will leave all music lovers pining for more with this intimate show on Friday 24th July. Supporting is Dave Sharpe, former guitarist of 80’s legends The Alarm. Blending soft rock, blues, country and folk, Dave will be playing hits from his cult classic album ‘Hard Travellin’ alongside brand new tracks.

// OPENROOMWords by Cherry Pullinger

// Open Room have previously been named as one of the best bands in Southampton by the Joiners official website, as well as being tipped to make it onto national radio station playlists all over the country with their infectious indie electro tracks. The lads dish out delicious blends of upbeat melodies and intense synth sounds alongside lead singer Zack’s soaring vocals. The Open Room package wouldn’t be complete without a compelling live show and the band put all their energy into creating a captivating and show stop-ping performance that is well worth anyone’s money (anybody who witnessed the ‘wall of death’ at Pen-nyFest will agree!). Back in June the guys returned to the studio with Neil Kennedy at ‘The Ranch’ to record a handful of tracks, but they’re keeping very quiet on which ones they will be recorded as they hope to keep it as a surprise for their fans. With a house party tour on the horizon (get in touch with the band at www.myspace.com/openroom), the band will be keeping very busy for the rest of the summer. The boys can be seen at the Joiners on Saturday 31st July with support from A Stranger In Moscow, Select Your Disguise and Forever Wednesday.

// A WORD LIKE.ATTACKWords by Hannah Mahony

// Southampton boys ‘A Word Like. Attack’ fell off the radar for a while when their lead singer Dave Berner was travelling, but fear not as the band are back at the Joiners with a musical vengeance! The post hardcore electronica band will be showcasing material from their new EP ‘Though We Aren’t Birds, We’re Still Given To Flight’ recorded recently with Neil Kennedy (Waiting For Sirens/ Burn The Fleet) at Southampton Studio ‘The Ranch’. As well as nib-bling at drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep on the EP, the boys from AWLA are spitting out more electronics than ever before. With excitement from the band spurting left, right and centre, expect a show filled with so much energy the energizer bunny himself would be left weeping. Bassist Adam Guest said: “We are so pumped to be playing to audiences again, especially with our new songs. Having been off the scene for a good four months we’re itching to play live again.” After the recent success of Pen-nyFest and the Burn The Fleet / Waiting For Sirens all dayer, you can expect another amazing show-case of quality local talent on Saturday 18th July, with Ardentes, Finely Tuned Assassins and Get The Tape all supporting.

// THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART @ THE JOINERS // 13/06 // SOFT TOY EMERGENCY & UNICORN KID @ UNIT // 13/06Words by Zoe Whitfield

// Saturday night’s all right. More than that in fact, it’s the perfect night for multiple gig-viewage. And on the 13th, that’s exactly what we did! Starting at the Joiners with a headline set from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, an indie band with an emo name (at face value only, it’s actually the title of an unpublished children’s story). Keyboardist Peggy Wang-East, cuts a typical NY shape; all bangs and rolled up sleeves, while her male cohorts channel David Bowie/Karen O with glitter covered faces. Interestingly, both looks match the sounds produced on stage tonight, with the quartet’s dreamy melodies seemingly the perfect soundtrack for the next Michael Cera film, featuring aspects of Vivian Girls, The Maccabees and Pulp, but with added New York style.

Following a gentle cab ride to Unit, its time for Liverpool’s Soft Toy Emergency to once again show the Saturday night clubbers how to party. However with front woman Jen its ‘Bye bye bangs’ and ‘Hello fringe’ as she bounds about the stage like some sort of electro pop pixie. Previously likened to a mix of Hadouken! and New Young Pony Club, STE have got catchy tunes in abundance. The free CDs lining the bar go down a treat too, not that the crowd needs much persuasion.

Tonight’s last act is Unicorn Kid (aka Oliver Sabin), who takes to the stage in a tres cool Kate Morross Tee and his signature lion shaped hat. Coming over like Sportsday Megaphone’s younger hyperactive brother, his set sees the dance floor pull shapes that wouldn’t be out of place at an oldskool rave. Oliver is quickly gaining influential fans,including Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. Move over Calvin Harris, more room is needed on the commercial electro bus!

// ME MY HEADWords by Hayley Clarke

// Me My Head grace the Unit stage on the We Are Rock-stars club night on Saturday 11th July. The most popular indie rock club night in Southampton has played host to many great new bands in 2009 (most recently Wintersleep and Master Shortie) and the 11th will be no exception. Emerging from the breakup of their previous band ‘The Moth’, this West London five-piece have recently sup-ported hot new acts Dananananaykroyd and The Joy Formidable (both recent guests of The Joiners). Since the recent completion of their album ‘Survival in No Mans Land’, Me My Head are now set to unleash their keyboard-infused indie rock to the masses, as they headline their own tour. The band have already got some big names be-hind them; Dave Bascombe (Depeche Mode, Manic Street Preachers and The Verve) mixed the album and their latest single, Tumbling Down, was produced by Embrace guitar-ist, Richard McNamara. The night will also feature 2 floors of request filled anthems, with The Lounge turning into the best indie disco of the week and The Loft becoming a manic alternative mashup, playing everything from the world of rock/indie/electro/breaks.
