www.corshamprimary.co.uk July 2012 Despite rain and grey clouds, the sun has been shining at Corsham Primary throughout this busy summer term; the children and staff have had a great time! We will shortly be saying goodbye to our wonderful year six children who have given us so much joy over the years. We wish them all well as they move on to their new secondary schools. At this time of year we will also be saying goodbye and hello to old and new staff members and are planning to welcome the new Foundation Stage pupils in September. It is certainly “all change” which always brings with it a certain number of anxieties. Baby news—on Sunday 8 July, a lovely little boy arrived for Mr and Mrs Heard. Max weighed in at a healthy 8lb 15oz. Mum, Dad and of course the new little Heard are doing very well. We can’t wait for a cuddle! Mrs Jude Bartlett, our HR Consultant also gave birth to Daniel who made his safe arrival on 5 July. Daniel weighed in at 6lb 12oz and sister Robyn is enjoying getting to know her new brother. Plans are now fully underway for the building of the new extension at Pound Pill—staff and children are so excited; it will be great to say goodbye to the old mobile classrooms. Over the holidays the ground preparation work will take place so when you come back to school in September, the builder’s compound will be safely fenced off. It is going to put huge pressure on parking places in the school grounds so we would ask again that you park away from the school to prevent further complications during this phase of construction. The mobiles are also having some alterations over the summer break; the current year five class will be demolished in order that the builders can safely fence off the construction area. In September, Mrs Smalley’s class will be housed in Mr Heard’s classroom and Mr Heard will move into the Peacock Suite. We know things are going to be a little disrupted for a few months but it should be well worth it when the children have moved to their new classrooms. A big thank you to The Green Square Housing Association for “gifting” the small woodland adjacent to Snapdragon Nursery at our Broadwood site, to Corsham Primary. Over the summer, we aim to fence and clear the area in order that we can establish Corsham Primary’s own Forest School in the autumn term. Children from both sites will be able to use this lovely new facility and we are very grateful to Green Square for their generosity.

CAR PARKING PERMITS hellip

Corsham Primary School

Pound Pill

Corsham

17th July 2012

Dear Parents and Carers

After a recent Health and Safety Audit conducted at the Pound Pill Site it was formally noted and

acknowledged that there are significant traffic risks particularly at the end of the school day

These risks take the form of

In the event of a fire a fire engine could not access the school grounds due to cars being parked

inappropriately on the school drive and due to the bottle-neck caused by parked cars

Cars being driven too fast around the school one way system particularly in narrow gaps be-

tween parked cars

Cars parked in areas reserved for walking creating a risk where children may not be fully visi-

ble to all drivers

The safety of your children in our care is paramount in addition to other individuals who enter the

school grounds We have been made aware of staff being verbally abused whilst trying to deal with

traffic problems caused particularly at the end of the school day which is unacceptable not only to

us but also to the children and all parents

Our staff and teachers are here to support the education of the pupils and not operate as traffic war-

dens

With this in mind the Board and Governing Body will be considering a range of options to mitigate

these risks These include

1 The implementation of a barrier ndash restricting entry to the school throughout the day

2 Works to widen access to the entrance so that it becomes easier to enter and exit the school

drive

3 A complete ban on all parent and visitor cars entering the site

4 The implementation of a restricted access pass system where only families which live beyond a

certain radius from the school will be granted vehicular access

Whilst some parents and carers may feel that these are too drastic measures to be considered if an

accident was to occur the clock cannot be turned back and we have a responsibility to limit serious

possible risks

There will be much debate over this issue in the months ahead in particular whilst the building

works are underway but clearly this situation cannot and will not be allowed to continue

We welcome any suggestions on how we can alleviate this problem I can be contacted through the

school office should you wish to make any suggestions or discuss possible options

Yours sincerely

It is with great excitement that we are announcing plans for our new community initiativemdash

the Corsham Primary Walking Bus

What is it It is a group of children led by a ldquodriverrdquo and followed by a ldquoconductorrdquo who walk to school along a

set route with set ldquobus stopsrdquo The drivers and conductors (and other helpers) are made up of

parents who volunteer for one or two trips to or from school

What is the route Our ldquobusrdquo will run from Katherine Park to Pound Pill and hopefully Katherine Park to Broadwood

The detailed route has not yet been finalised

Why walk to school It saves you money walking instead of driving can save on average pound400 per year It is

educational walking to school can help your child build independence road safety awareness and

social skills In a recent study 84 of children who walked to school meet up with classmates on the

way It is healthy children need at least 60 minutes of exercise every day And lastly it is better

for the environment and saves parents the headache of trying to find a parking space near the

school

How does it work Each trip has a designated ldquodriverrdquo and ldquoconductorrdquo All passengers book onto the trips they want to

travel on for the term Passengers wait at designated stops along the route at specified times for

the walking bus to pick them up and go to school They are subsequently dropped off at designated

stops on the way home from school Parents must collect from these stops unless otherwise

authorised in writing

Please volunteer 90 of parents who walk to school say how important this time is spent with their children You will

be contributing to a fantastic community initiative and play an important role in increasing childrenrsquos

health

What happens next We plan to start the walking bus in the autumn term so further information will be available in

September It will probably initially run for 2 days and hopefully grow to incorporate the whole week

as support and momentum increases WATCH THIS SPACE

We need your help to get this started so if you live on Katherine Park and your child or

children go to Corsham Primary School then we would really love you to be part of this

scheme For any information or questions please email the Walking Bus Coordinator Louise Ur-

quhart (missmarilougooglemailcom)

Power Lines and Substations are a necessary part of the community and Countryside essential to transport energy to homes and businesses They are perfectly safe when left alone However if children and adults dont take care when near power lines and substations then they could find themselves in dangerous situations like these

A fishing rod carried the wrong way can touch a power line

Trying to retrieve a football from a substation

Flying kites near power lines Please be aware of the possible dangers of power lines and substations and keep safe For more information please look at wwwssecomcool stuff Topics include basic electrical safety energy efficiency science and history facts and is an excellent reference point

John Stanley

Donrsquot miss a great opportunity this summer

A Socious Sports rugby camp is the ideal

way to expose your child to the latest rug-

by coaching techniques from the

Southern Hemisphere

We have a great team of coaches lined up

for Bradford on Avon RFC this summer

The head coach will be Mike Umaga Mike is

a former Samoan International and is

currently Director of Rugby at Birmingham

University He will be supported by a great

team of coaches from the Southern

Hemisphere

The New Zealand coaches teach the

children the history and significance of the

Maori Haka a performance of this is given

by the children on the Friday afternoon

For those who will be playing TAG next

season our program is designed to develop

the core skills and form the foundation of

great rugby playing For those players who

will be moving into the under 9rsquos next

season we have a full program introducing

contact rugby starting with the basics and

moving on to the more advanced lessons as

the week progresses
