The end of a fiscal year offers a good opportunity to take stock on pastaccomplishments, weigh the outcome of past decisions, and plan for the month andyears ahead. Fiscal year 2012-2013 was a year of transition for the ISA OrangeCounty section. After years of holding monthly meetings at Fluor Corporation’soffices in Irvine, the section changed venues to the Old World Village restaurant inHuntington Beach and more recently to the Lutron Electronics California Experienceand Training Center in Irvine. Located in central Orange County and with easy accessto CA-405, Lutron Electronics is an ideal place for ISA members to convene. It offersconference rooms that can accommodate approximately 20 to 40 people and itsshowrooms are designed to showcase lighting control systems, sensors, and windowsystems that reduce energy usage in residential and commercial spaces. The location,in other terms, provides a backdrop for discussion on energy conservation, connectivity, modernization of electricity supply infrastructure, and other topics ofinterest among industrial automation professionals.

Along with a new venue, the section has organized an array of exciting topics for the coming year. Thismonth, for example, Dr. Krish Nangia from Fluor Corporation will speak about grass roots refinery redesign.Later Douglas Raff of Paradigm Industrial Controls will address machine safety, while PLC Plus International’sKhashayar Behdinan and GE’s John Callahan report on advances in process logic controller design. In contrastto recent years, the section will hold monthly meetings throughout the summer and organize two or threeeducational programs to better serve a membership eager to learn about the state of the art in its field. The organization of the technical and educational programs, and indeed the section’s entire operation, wouldnot be possible without the support from dedicated board volunteers. New to the board this year are PontonIndustries’ Account Manager Joan Akleh and Oxy’s Maintenance Specialist Wenifredo “Winnie” Ababat. Bothhave taken on their assignments with an enthusiasm that is nothing short of exemplary. I am grateful they havechosen to contribute to the advancement of the automation profession by volunteering in the OC section. Another volunteer that deserves recognition is immediate Past ISA OC Section President RafaelAgrazsánchez. Under Rafael’s leadership, the section fundraised approximately $22,000 in Automation OCExpo, the largest amount for the event to date, and over $4,000 from the joint Los Angeles-OC sectionChristmas party. With the continued support of leaders like him and greater participation by the ISA OCmembership, I am confident the new fiscal year will prove one of significant growth for the section.
