Fort Campbell Chapter of AUSA Newsletter July 2014

Since our last newsletter the Fort Campbell chapter of AUSA has been very busy. Both Hopkinsville and Clarksville conducted corporate membership drives

with over 70 new corporate members added to our roles. The U.S. Army Birthday was celebrated with a weeklong series of events. The first was our annual golf scramble and this year theweather was great for the fun competition. This was followed on Saturday morning with the inaugural 101KBike Tour, with over 140 bike riders this event was a great success. The next event was the June 2nd Tuesday lunch with CSM Smith who talked about his commitment to raising the awareness of AUSA andincreasing the active duty membership at Fort Campbell. Then on Friday we joined with the Hoptown Hoppers during their military appreciation night, and then finally the birthday week culminated with our 2ndannual Birthday Ball. The ball was well attended by both Fort Campbell active duty Soldiers and Clarksvilleand Hopkinsville community leaders. The guest speaker was LTG Mullholland who provided an informativemessage to all attending. A big thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and participants during the birthday week events. With out youthese would not have been possible.

With the birthday week behind us we continue to be active and visible to both Fort Campbell and our communities. On thecalendar for the near future our first Motorcycle Poker Run on July 19, 2nd Tuesday luncheon on August 12 and our annual Membership Breakfast to be held at Valor Hall on August 28th. I hope to see you at one or all these events.

Sheryl EllisFort Campbell AUSA Chapter President

At the end of June a report was brought to light of potential future troop reductions and their effects on posts across the nation. The report, 2014 Supplemental Programmatic Enjoinmental Assessment (SPEA), outlined a senerio of the Fort Campbell active duty population being reduced in half and significant cuts in civilian employees. The economic impact to the Fort Campbell area would amount tonearly $1 billion per year.

AUSA board member and County Commissioner Tommy Vallejos gave his thoughts on this issue: “After reading the potential cuts inthe study, I have had to really think how hard this would be on our local economy. The adverse impact would be felt in our schools, jobs onbase, housing, the purchase of vehicles and in the local mall. Both city and county leaders, along with our school leaders, should start lookingat our reaction to the potential loss of major tax revenues,” Vallejos said.

A 60-day public comment period implemented by the U.S. Department of Defense has already begun and will continue untilAugust 26. You are encouraged to submit your comments on the impact to this area to: U.S. Army Environmental Command, ATTN: SPEAPublic Comments, 2450 Connell Road (Building 2264), Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234-7664 or emailed [email protected]. Inquiries may also be made via phone by calling 210-466-1590 or toll-free 855-846-3940.

The Fort Campbell Chapter of AUSA’s newest event isTour de Campbell. This was held as part of the U.S. Army Birth-day week celebration and offered the communities and FortCambell Soldiers and Families the opportunity to ride on post. Inaddition to the 101K, we offered a 50K and 10.1K.

Over 140 bike riders participated in this inaugural eventand the comments onthe ride have been great! The chapter received thefollowing letter that gaveinsight on the bike ride and more from Michael K. Hayes GS-12, RSP.

We had great support from The Sunset Rotary Club,Bikes & More

MS Nelson:I wish to say "Thank You" to you and the AUSA Team that provided the AUSA Tour de Campbell on Saturday. That was aGREAT event! You made sure everything was well organizedand the provisions were outstanding; the flyer's mention of apost-ride BBQ was much better and more appropriately handledwith the food that was provided; entertainment was great aswell....sounds like I can't say enough good about it, doesn't it?One memorable thing about the route that we and some of theother riders brought up following the ride: I don't know who setup the route (oh, which was also great, wasn't it?), but near theend of the route, on Mabry Road, there's a pretty steep downhill, and even larger and steeper hill continuing. You can see the uphill right away, and I'm sure all of us who didn't understandthe queue sheet, groaned at the thought of having to do thatkind of uphill, that late in the ride....BUT....at the bottom of thedownhill on Mabry.....the route-makers inserted a turn off ontoFence Line....NO UPHILL....literally, lots of laughs there....it was a perfect deception that worked out great!

Concerning the AUSA, my wife's father is proud of his association with AUSA...he has a framed certificate with coindisplaying his lifetime membership in AUSA, given to him whenhe retired following 21 years as a civilian at In/Out ProcessingDENTAC which followed 30 years Active Duty, retiring as aMaster Sergeant. He's now 82, and every once in a while, hetakes that framed certificate and shows it off to his friends at thegym or library, thus promoting AUSA. He's well aware of whatthe AUSA does; and (who doesn't) we know Mrs Freeman and have followed her actions, and others, in supporting Fort Campbell and our Soldiers and their families.

Again, thank you, and we're all hoping that this Tour will be ayearly event; something to really look forward to.

Mike
