Once you add in the tens of thousands of animals we

almost too much to bear. I can honestly say my dear

Good Morning Lynn,

I am emailing you a picture from Zoey’sclass. She really enjoyed coming toKatie’s for class, and seeing all herfriends again.

Thank you forbringing thislittle valentineinto our lives,and for every-thing you dofor rescue ani-mals.

It is with great sadness that we sharewith you that Dagwood went to theRainbow Bridge today. We first laid eyeson him at the office of his foster mom, Dr.Sharon Hill. A few short hours later hecame home with us.

This morning Dagwood lost the use of hisback legs, which apparently was due toexcessive arthritis in his right hip andlower spine. It was also discovered thathe had fluid around his heart, likelyblood; that was causing him to be in crit-ical condition. Dr. Matt shared thataccording to statistics this happens whenthere is cancer of a heart valve and wecould drain it but he would likely onlyhave weeks left. We decided to let him gowith dignity so we said our “see yalater’s” this morning.

We were blessed with more than 12years of his unconditional love. He was alife saver and a devoted companion. Hewill be greatly missed, Dag!

{Editors Note: Leslie Lauersdorf let usknow that Bonnie Sue passed away andshe sent us the following picture.}

We wanted to let you know that we hadto put Stix to rest this past Friday, April11. He was 13 on April 1st (his paperssaid his birthday was the end of March,so we always chose April 1st as his birth-day). He was one of the 40 puppies yourescued from IN in 2004. We adoptedhim Nov 11, 2004. You named himStimpy, we renamed him Stix.He was SO loved by us and our 4 boys.He was ‘one of the boys’, and a brotherto them. They grew up together, as ouroldest was 10 and our youngest 4 whenwe got him. As our youngest (now 16)said, “He was my whole life.”Thank you for making the trek all thoseyears ago to save him. He brought somuch happiness, love and laughter to ourlives. We just wish he could have livedmuch longer. But isn’t that always thewish? We have 13 years of memories,that even through this hurt, we wouldn’ttrade for the world!We love our handsome Stix!Forever grateful,The Letsch Family

Hi Guys,

Manet did very well his first day/nighthere. He found a very comfortable hideyhole in a closet after being shown whereeverything is. No fear of dogs and nohissing or hackles. He and Lily (my otherkitty) are still wary of each other though.

This morning he wasn’t in the closet, buthad eaten the food l left out for him(water too!). I found him on the cat tree inthe basement and brought him upstairsto the tree I put together last night. He isthere now looking out the window andsnoozing.

I’ll keep you updated. He is very lovingtowards me and purrs when I’m with him.

Thank you for bringing us together

Lynn,

Thank you for the card and the kindwords after we lost our beloved “Nicky”on Easter. We adopted Nicky and hiscompanion “Miss Kay” through HopeSafehouse a year and a half ago, aftertheir owner passed away. Our family vis-ited them in foster care, and we knewimmediately we wanted them both to joinour home. Nicky was 11, and Miss Kaywas 4. Unknown to any of us, Nicky haduntreated diabetes. We found this outshortly after he came to live with us,because he exhibited symptoms rightaway. We only had Nicky 2 months whenhe went blind. It happened suddenly,and was a shock to all of us. Nicky wasa little trooper. He allowed me to care forhim by giving him his twice-daily insulininjections. We managed his blood-sugarlevel to the satisfaction of our vets. Theblindness did not slow Nicky down at all!After a brief adjustment, Nicky confidently

Our 9yr old son bonded with Nicky like hehad with no other dog. It was beautifuland amazing to watch. Our son is autistic.Nicky seemed to understand, and waswilling to be a constant and lovingcompanion. When Nicky developed a badeye infection a week before Easter, we didnot know this would be the trigger to hisrapid decline. The eye infection broughton ketoacidosis. Nicky fought it off with-out hospitalization. Ketones dropped tozero. The vets cheered, and our house-hold was so happy. Nicky acted like apuppy. Unfortunately, the eye infectionworsened. Ketoacidosis returned alongwith acute pancreatitis. We could tellNicky was ready to go, and made thetough call on Easter morning.

We thank Hope Safehouse for the privi-lege of allowing us to adopt Nicky! Hewas the 2nd senior companion that weadopted, and we will surely do it again.Nicky was adored by our family. We arenow focused on navigating our own grief,along with making our son and Miss Kayunderstand that he is not coming back.Senior animals make excellent compan-ions—please adopt!

The Heveran Family (Kristine, Glenn, andKarson)

{Editors note: We LOVE adopters who seekout older animals. As the last two storiesshow, older animals still have a lot to give.Thank you Marcia & the Heveran family foradopting these special animals!}

“Huggy”, who we call Olive, is doing greatas she approaches 10 years old this fall!She loves our recent move to the suburbsas she now has a backyard to run andplay in, although she prefers to lay on thedeck and sunbathe. Over the years Olivegained 2 human siblings who love her asmuch as we do. It’s hard to put into words

just how thankful we are to have foundsuch a wonderful dog through HOPESafehouse as she has been the sweetest,most patient and loving animal as we wel-comed kids and expanded our family.

We look forward toseeing the nextnewsletter as wealways pay closeattention to the mailsection to see if werun across any ofOlive’s furry sib-lings enjoying theirlives too!

All the best, Kari Raimondi

Miles is equal parts goofy and sweet,hyperactive and snuggly. He LOVES tolay on my husband’s lap, play tug of warwith his GIANT rope, run laps around theback yard, and hike for hours and hours inthe hills- especially if it’s muddy! He alsoespecially loves when mom gives him hotdogs as a treat- they are his favorite!

It’s summer! Time for that long-awaited vacation. Some animals would prefer to stay home while you travel. Forinstance, my cats never warmed up to traveling in our RV, so they stay home when we go camping. But when theanimals can and want to go, there are a few helpful hints you may want to keep in mind.• Pack their usual bed and toys to provide comfort and security.• Provide their usual food, as stress from travel often doesn’t mix well with a new diet.• Make sure they’re wearing an ID tag and/or are microchipped in case of escape.• Take along their medical file if you plan to board them along the way.• Remember to offer fresh water often.• Take regular breaks from travel to stretch and go potty.• Be responsible and pick up after your dog during potty breaks.• If your pets are nervous travelers, try short trial runs in advance to acclimate them.• Keep in mind that some pets prefer to travel in a crate for a feeling of security.

Try never to leave your pet in a parked car. When it’s just 72 degrees outside, the temperature in your car canincrease to 116 degrees within an hour. When it’s 80 degrees, the temperature in your car can heat up to almost 100degrees within just 10 minutes! Rolling down the windows has been proven to have little effect on the temperaturein the car, and in many states, leaving your pet in your car at these temperatures is illegal. Enjoy your trips!~
