The true way and the sure

way to friendship is through

humility-being open to each

other, accepting each other

just as we are, knowing each

other.

Mother Teresa

Accepting Each Other

Help us accept each other

John 17:20-23:

“I’m praying not only for them

But also for those who will believe in me

Because of them and their witness about me.

The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—

Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you,

So they might be one heart and mind with us.

Then the world might believe that you, in fact, sent me.

The same glory you gave me, I gave them,

So they’ll be as unified and together as we are—

I in them and you in me.

Then they’ll be mature in this oneness,

And give the godless world evidence

That you’ve sent me and loved me” (The Message, by Eugene Peterson).

This is Jesus’ longest prayer recorded in scripture. He is about to leave the

disciples. He knows he is about to be betrayed by Judas. This prayer expresses Jesus love

for the disciples and his desire that they be unified. He knows the mission before them is

great; they will need the loving support of each other to remain steadfast to the task of

growing the Kingdom.

There will always be differences among us. The challenge is to respect our differences as

we give witness as followers of Christ. We have all missed the mark! We are all in need

of grace and forgiveness! How we treat one another matters! When we learn to accept

differences while maintaining Christ-like love and kindness we honor Christ and grow the

Kingdom of God!

I would like to thank everyone who has participated in the Holy Conversations. I give

thanks to God for your willingness to share openly, listen deeply and not judge based on

differences of opinion!

Please stay tuned to the bulletin and newsletter for upcoming topics to be discussed.

With Christian love, joy, & gratitude,

Andi

I would like to thank Deb Taylor, Dave Taylor, and Joe Cavalluzzi for faithfully

representing Jonesboro UMC at Annual Conference June 12-15. One of the best parts of attending

AC is to hear reports that celebrate and communicate God’s blessings. You are a generous

congregation! The most generous I have had the privilege of serving alongside as I begin 32 years

of ministry! I am grateful to share that the NC Conference has received 7.8 million dollars from

UMCOR to assist the thousands of folks from Eastern NC who have been impacted by hurricanes.

Thank you for your generous contributions to UMCOR which has multiplied many times over!

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all who contribute time, energy, monies and

food to help makes VBS a huge success to the children in our neighborhood.

I celebrate God’s generosity and your generosity as we share with our neighbors!

A new way to give to JUMC

If you shop on Amazon you can now help Jonesboro United Methodist Church.

We are now registered as a charitable organization on AmazonSmile. This is a simple

way to help the church without hurting your wallet.

What is AmazonSmile? This is a website operated by Amazon that lets you enjoy the

same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on

Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop at AmazonSmile

(smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile foundation donates 0.5% of the price of eligible

purchases to the charitable organizations selected by you. Also through AmazonSmile’s

product donation experience, Charity Lists, you can browse, purchase, and donate

products directly to us. There is no additional charge to you or to the church.

How do I participate: When you shop Amazon, go to the smile.amazon.com web site

instead of Amazon.com. On the right you should see a box that shows charities from

which you may choose. Below that is a place to type in Jonesboro United Methodist

Church which will then take you to a list of Methodist Churches. Please make sure you

click on Jonesboro. Once you’ve done that you are taken to Amazon to shop. If you are

a prime member that information will still be in effect. That’s it – that’s all you do to

participate.

If you have any questions, please contact the church office and we will talk you through

the process.

Holy conversations

As people of faith how do we respond to current issues like sexuality, gun

control, racism and the confederate flag? What is the role of scripture and Jesus’

teachings as we grapple with politically charged topics that are in the daily news?

Every Sunday and throughout the week we claim to be Easter people. We believe in a

risen Savior who continues to lead, guide and direct us in all things through the Holy

Spirit. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the immigration discussion.

Our gatherings were rich with fellowship and vulnerable with open sharing.

I am also grateful for Evelyn Watson for serving as Coordinator for our meals prior to

discussion. Please stay tuned to the bulletin as we will discuss sexuality later this

summer.

We will take a respite over the next several weeks and resume in mid August.

Gratefully,

Andi

Help us accept each other as Christ accepted us.

Teach us as sister, brother, each person to embrace.

Be present, Lord, among us and bring us to believe

We are ourselves accepted and meant to love and live.

Teach us, O Lord, your lessons, as in our daily lives

We struggle to be human and search for hope and faith.

Teach us to care for people, for all not just for some,

To love them as we find they or as they might become.

Let your acceptance change us, so that we may be moved

In living situations to do the truth in love;

To practice your acceptance until we know by heart

The table of forgiveness and laughter’s healing heart.

Lord, for today’s encounters with all who are in need,

Who hunger for acceptance, for righteousness and bread,

We need new eyes for seeing, new hands for holding on;

Renew us with your Spirit; Lord free us, make us one!

Help us accept each other. By Fred Kaan

Story behind the hymn Fred Kaan (1929-2009), though ordained in the United Reformed Church and serving in England, was a native of

Haarlem, The Netherlands. Kaan explains the origins of the hymn, “Help us accept each other”:

“This text was set in motion upon reading a Bible study article Mrs. Jackie Mattonen had written for the Cumberland

Presbyterian Church in the USA. It was almost accidentally and at the last moment included in the fourth edition of Cantate

Domino [an ecumenical and cross-cultural hymnal published by the World Council of Churches in 1974], … and it so

happened that my “Hymn of acceptance” was just the right length to fill the two blank pages that needed filling.”

The text appeared in Kaan’s collection Break Not the Circle (1975) for the first time in the U.S. The words became more

widely sung when they were set to music by American composer John Ness Beck (1930-1987) as an anthem. Beck’s anthem

setting was then adapted as a hymn tune ACCEPTANCE.

This is one of the most powerful hymns on reconciliation and forgiveness composed in the last half of the 20th century.

Romans 15:7 provides a scriptural basis for stanza 1: “Receive one another, then, just as Christ also received you, to God’s

glory.” The hymn also reflects Ephesians 4:15: “But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who

is the head.”

Kaan died Oct. 4 at the age of 80 after a long struggle with cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Though one of the most prophetic

and vigorous voices in 20th-century hymnody has been silenced, we shall continue to sing his hymns

everyone has been towards me. I have loved my

time spent in Sunday School and Worship, and

look forward to it each week. This church has

shown me nothing but kindness, and I will

always be thankful for that.

I would like to thank you for your prayers, encouragement

and support, not only during the 5 years as a part of the Jonesboro

family, but these past 4 years while I was in school. On May 11th

2019 I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Business

Administration - Marketing and a minor in Christian studies from

Campbell University. Currently I am traveling as an office director

with a Lifeway camp called Student Life for Kids. The Lord has led

me into seasonal ministry the past 4 summers, and I know this labor

is not in vain. I am currently praying for a door to be open for a full

time marketing or event coordinating position in the Raleigh area,

and would be so grateful for you to be praying with me.

I just graduated from Queens University in Charlotte, NC. I

graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This is my second

degree - I graduated with a degree in Communication from NC State

University in 2013.

I will be starting my job as a medical surgical nurse at Mercy Hospital in

Charlotte, NC at the end of July. Within the next year, I plan on applying to

grad school to pursue a master's degree to become an acute care nurse

practitioner.

JUMC has been a constant support system

throughout my life. I am appreciative to the

church body for the encouragement to

pursue my dreams, and for giving me the

moral foundation needed to be a strong

Christian. I pray that as a nurse I will be

able to continue the work of the Lord

2018 North Carolina Annual Conference, United Methodist Church

Submitted by Deb Tayler

Generosity in All People In June, equal numbers of lay and ordained members of the NC Annual Conference gathered in Greenville to celebrate, serve

and conduct business. Jonesboro UMC voting delegates were Pastor Andi Woodhouse and Deb Taylor, as the elected

Delegate to Annual Conference. Joe Cavalluzzi and David Taylor served as voting delegates for the Fairway District.

Faith-Full

At Annual Conference, we · sang hymns and praise songs; · prayed; · shared communion; · experienced musical offerings; ·

memorialized pastors and pastors’ spouses who have gone on to Glory in the past year; · heard the Word from exceptional

preachers; · engaged in Bible study; and · celebrated the ordination of new lay missioners and clergy persons.

Beyond these “obviously religious” moments, the Spirit ruled throughout the business of Annual Conference as well.

Ministry

Oh, the lives that are changed by United Methodists ministries!

· The NC Conference UMC operates eight disaster response centers and five satellite housing centers that are

rebuilding lives devastated by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 (yes, still) and Hurricane Florence in 2018. Since October 2016,

NCCUMC Disaster Response Ministry has repaired 847 homes; 267 more are in progress. Teams have come from 35 other

states to help, and 18,000 volunteers from NC and elsewhere have given 599,000 hours equating to $14 million of labor. The

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has contributed $7.8 million for this ministry.

Nonetheless: 13,000 homeowners are still waiting for help after Hurricane Florence. NCCUMC Disaster Response

Ministry restores hope to families who thought they were abandoned. If your small group, family or bunch of friends feels a

call to help, see www.nccumc.org/outreach/disaster-response for details on how to get started.

· NC Conference youth have set a goal to raise $500,000 for NC storm response. Through June 15, more than

$200,000 had been raised for the Youth Storm Fund, and the NC Conference mission endowment will match these funds

dollar for dollar up to $500,000. JUMC recently contributed $100 from its storm relief funds and $150 from individual

donations to this effort.

· JUMC contributed $100 from your Second Mile giving to a special offering for Rotifunk Hospital in Sierra Leone.

Every day, thousands of people with treatable health conditions die there due to inadequate resources like clean water,

electricity, medical equipment and supplies, medicines and skilled healthcare workers. The $13,430 raised by the special

offering will help rebuild, staff, and operate a full service, high-quality hospital and community health center.

· This year United Methodist Women celebrates its founding 150 years ago by a group of eight women who started

the organization to meet the needs of the hungry, thirsty, needy and lonely. Today the organization is 800,000 women strong!

Recently, Partners in Ministry in Laurinburg became an official UMW National Mission Initiative.

Connectional Business

The business of Annual Conference cements and celebrates our connection. Here are some highlights; get all the details at the

NC Conference web site – that’s NCCUMC.org.

· The Conference is working diligently to reduce its budget, and delegates approved a 2021 budget that is 23.13%

lower than what has been approved for the 2020 budget.

Page 11: July 2019 · 2020-05-26 · July 2019 The true way and the sure way to friendship is through humility-being open to each other, accepting each other just as we are, knowing each other

Life Together Page 11

At the end of broken dreams · Laity elected lay delegates, and clergy elected clergy delegates, to the 2020 General and Jurisdictional Conferences.

Eight lay and eight clergy delegates were elected for General Conference, May 5-15 in Minneapolis. Eight lay and eight

clergy delegates—plus five alternate laity and five clergy delegates—were elected for the Southeastern Jurisdictional

Conference, July 15-18, 2020.

· On recommendation from related Conference committees, delegates voted to sell the residence used to house the

Bishop assigned to our Annual Conference. It is expected that the proceeds of this sale, as well as funds that have been saved

in preparation for future repairs, will instead fund a housing allowance for the Bishop in perpetuity. This will remove

$60,000 in annual expense and set-asides from the Conference budget.

· The Annual Conference body approved 10 resolutions—proposals and position statements presented by churches,

groups and last summer’s Annual Conference Session for Youth. See box with details.

Each year the business of United Methodist Annual Conference changes. What never changes is our commitment to

being Christ’s hands and feet through the love of our never-changing God.

Annual Conference Resolutions

The 2019 Annual Conference adopted resolutions that encourage—

Energy efficiency in churches;

Nar-Anon groups and substance abuse education in churches;

Inclusion of more diverse cultural expressions during Conference and local youth events;

Serving of fair trade coffee in churches;

Actions in response to climate change, including faithful Creation care in churches;

Agreement on “Full Communion” with The Episcopal Church, which includes participation in Communion; transferability

of members; mutual recognition of ministries; and efforts to express, strengthen and enable our common life, witness and

service;

Opposition to solitary confinement more than 15 days in NC prisons;

Understanding how laws and events govern the lives of our immigrant neighbors via NCCUMC Immigration Ministry Task

Force updates and seeking out balanced sources of information, as well as establishing district liaisons for immigration

ministries;

Calling on the 2020 General Conference to clarify the definition of “youth” in UMC ministries as ages 12 through 18 (and up

to 24 in central conferences); and

Calling for the repeal of the Traditional Plan at the 2020 General Conference and removal of discriminatory language in the

Book of Discipline, as well as urging local UMCs to ensure LGBTQIA+ (and all) persons are welcomed and included in

membership and leadership positions as called for in the Book of Discipline.

To read the complete resolutions, see www.nccumc.org/ac2019/resolutions/.

This cross used throughout Annual Conference was made of debris from homes and

churches devastated by Hurricane Florence last fall.

On the evening of June 17, the UMM honored two high

school graduates--Keven Ramirez and Jenni Dalrymple-- at the

annual Senior Supper held at the parsonage (a 3rd graduate, Tyler

Soule, was unable to attend).

The supper was attended by seven of our UMM (Lucas

Huggins, Kris Kenner and Dave Wolters) along with seven

guests. (In addition to the graduates and their families the guests

were Andi Woodhouse, Barb Cavalluzzi and Janice Wolters).

Thanks are extended to Barb Cavalluzzi for preparing the baked

ziti entree, Van Groce, Jr. for preparing the salad and Libby

Grossfuss for making the desserts. Each graduate received a

small gift from the UMM. In addition, Pastor Andi Woodhouse

was inducted as an honorary member of the JUMC UMM in

gratitude for her support of UMM ministries and events since

she has been JUMC’s pastor.

Keven and Jenni both graduated this year from Lee

County High School. Keven and his family have been a part of

the JUMC family for many years. Jenni and her family are not

members of the JUMC but she has faithfully attended the Youth

Sunday School class and the 11am worship service for the last

two years. Keven and Jenni will both be attending Central

Carolina Community College next year with plans to eventually

transfer to North Carolina State.
