Together by Joe Parker
W hen I initially asked Mr. Charles S. Oakey for an
interview, I knew from the start, when we were try-
ing to settle on a date, I was basically speaking to a real cou-
ple. His initial response was “most anytime except Thursday
because that’s when I carry my girlfriend out to lunch.” Of
course, his girlfriend just happens to be Mrs. Agnes Oakey.
When I arrived at their home, together they welcomed me
and made me feel as though I had known them for years.
Agnes shared her history of King George as we talked and
her love for the land she and her first husband farmed for
many years. She told of the many years of work as they
toiled together in the fields that surround their beautiful
home. Although they both lovingly shared stories of their
former spouses whom they had survived, you could feel the
togetherness they now share as a couple of almost 25 years.
Together they have had the opportunity to travel the world:
New Zealand, Australia, most of Europe, Canada, and the
many islands of the Caribbean.
Charles said he was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, in
1923. When I asked him how he found his way to King
George, he said it was after his wife had passed away and
he began attending a Methodist church in Fredericksburg.
A friend relayed to him they had a meeting where widows
and widowers got together each Wednesday night. He said
that is where he met Agnes and they just hit it off right
from the start. He continued by saying: “I’m 90 years old,
and there are four things that got me where I am today: the
Grace of God, my mother, my first wife of 43 years, and
my second wife of almost 25 years. Without them, I
wouldn’t be here. They took care of me in every way pos-
sible. I know from whence I came. I am a great student of
history and background. If you don’t know where you
came from, how do you know where you are going …you
got to have a soul.”
I continued talking to Charles about his service to his
country during World War II. He said he served as a ser-
geant in the Army in the 739th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion,
Battery “D.” He saw extensive service action in the South
Pacific, Fiji Islands, and New Guinea. He took part in the
liberation of the Visayan Islands in the Philippines. One day
at church, he was talking with Tom Breese and discovered
that he and Tom’s father were on the same beachhead of
Mindoro during the liberation of the Philippines. Charles’
service throughout that area of the South Pacific lasted al-
most 3 years. He confided that his Battery had one goal and
the goal was: “take no prisoners.” He proudly confessed his
Battery didn’t lose a single man. During his tour of duty, he
received a significant number of ribbons and he wears them
proudly each Memorial Day.
When they liberated Negros Island toward the end of his
tour of duty, Battery “D” was serving with the 40th Infantry
Division of the California National Guard and the Guard had
been sent for occupation and his Battery had enough points
to return home. As a result, they took his Battery and made
them MPs until it was time for them to depart. He said: “I
knew about as much about being an MP as a dog would
know about directing traffic.” After he got home, his dad
asked him: “What did you think of all that territory you saw
over there?” His response was: “I wouldn’t trade one acre of
Virginia for all of it.”
I mentioned to him that his generation is probably best
described as the greatest generation because of their effort in
winning the war. He corrected me and told me: “The great-
est generation consisted of Washington, Franklin, Monroe,
Jefferson, Madison, and the like. They were the ones who
set the pattern for us to live by; and, if we lived by those
principles today, we would be a whole lot better country.”
Charles concluded by saying: “I believe in what those peo-
ple believed in.”
As I left, the two of them were discussing which restaurant
they planned to go for their date…Together.
Charles during the war years. Shi-
loh thanks you, Charles, for your
service to our country.
“It is, I believe, the greatest gener-
ation any society has ever pro-
duced. These men and women
fought not for fame and recogni-
tion, but because it was the right
thing to do.”—Tom Brokaw, The
Greatest Generation
Children’s Ministry What an awesome VBS. We tried something new this
year. We learned what worked and what did not work. I
want to thank each and every person that helped make this
years VBS such a huge success. You just never know
what will become of the children that attended but know
that a seed has been planted and it will be amazing to
watch God work in their lives. Thank you again for all of
you that made it possible. In July, Barbara and I will have
the music camp. The dates are July 21st – 26th with the
performance on Sunday, July 27th. This is open for chil-
dren 2nd grade and up. The music camp runs each day
from 9 – 12 with a snack provided. They will work with
Barbara on the music and with me they will have some
games and lessons. Sign your kids up as soon as possi-
ble. Contact Barbara or myself if you have any questions.
Music News All Aboard!!! We are gearing up and ready to go for
music camp. On Sunday, July 27 we will present "Spend
a While on the Nile", a drama/musical presentation explor-
ing the bible stories around the Nile River. We will study
the story of Joseph and his brothers, Moses and the burn-
ing bush, and Pharaoh. Don't miss your chance to be a part
of this fun and uplifting musical. A sign-up sheet is on the
bulletin board outside the church office. We need singers
(ages 7 to 17), actors--any age and help with props, sets
and costumes. Be sure to let us know if you want to be a
part of our production!

Sunday Bible Study Sunday morning Bible study FAQs
How many Bible study classes are there?
There are 6 adult classes to choose from. There is 1 class
specifically for men, 2 for women, and 3 for anyone to
attend. We also have a College and Career class for our
current and recently graduated college students. In addi-
tion, we have a girls youth class and a boys youth class (7th
– 12th grades) as well as 5 grade specific children’s classes
and a nursery for our youngest members.
What do they study in class?
This is as varied as the classes themselves. Some of our
adult classes use Lifeway quarterly materials and some
other classes use a study by Masterworks. Our children
use a variety of materials studies to learn the most im-
portant truth, that God loves them!
Do I have to be a member of a class to study with
them?
Absolutely not! Our classes welcome any and all to come
on in, sit with them, fellowship, worship, and study. We
encourage adults to visit many of our classes before set-
tling on the one that they will call “home”.
How do I know where to find the class I’m interested
in?
All of our classrooms are labeled for your convenience or
you can ask any one of our greeters and they will be happy
to show you the way.
