5. Over 45 popes have sanctioned the story of the house’s miraculous transport

The Popes include Popes Benedict XII, Blessed Urban V, Urban VI, Pope Paul II, Julius II, Leo X, St. Pius V, Gregory XIII, Six-tus V, Clement VIII, Clement X, Innocent XII, Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X, Benedict XV, and many others.

THE HOLY HOUSE OF LORETO Last Part

3. Our Lady of Loreto is the Patroness of air travel. On March 24, 1920, Pope Benedict XV named the Our Lady of Loreto the Patron-ess of all air travelers. Check out this prayer that intercedes to her! O Holy Mother of God, our Lady of Loreto, Patroness of aviation and air travelers. We come to thank you for all the graces and benefits bestowed on us. Full of trust in your powerful intercession, we fly to you, begging for your maternal solicitude and care. Listen to our supplications for the suc-cess of this flight and all the flights we may undertake. Do bless the pilots, the flight attendants, the technicians, and all of us, passengers, placed under their care. As we piously believe that your house in Nazareth was borne by angels to Loreto, so may you also bring us all safely to our destination here on earth and to our final home in heaven. Amen.

4. The House is now enclosed in marble The house was made of a dark red polished stone wholly unlike anything in Palestine, where all the buildings there were of grey limestone of the country. To protect the house though, the shrine was surrounded by a marble screen designed by Bramante and commissioned by Popes Leo X, Clem-ent VII, and Paul III. The four sides of the marble enclosure rep-resent the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Arrival of the House at Loreto and the Na-tivity of the Blessed Mother.

Oh Saint Maria Goretti who, strengthened by God's grace, did not hesitate even at the age of twelve to shed your blood and sacrifice life itself to defend

your virginal purity, look graciously on the un-happy human race which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation. Teach us all, and especially youth, with what courage and promp-titude we should flee for the love of Jesus any-thing that could offend Him or stain our souls with sin. Obtain for us from our Lord victory in temptation, comfort in the sorrows of life, and the grace which we earnestly beg of thee (here insert intention), and may we one day enjoy with thee the imperishable glory of Heaven. Amen.

LIGHTENING THE LOAD

In the Gospel, Christ says that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. But how can this be true? Doesn’t each Chris-tian among us have a heavy burden to carry?

Nobody needs me to list what things make a person’s burden heavy. Everyone can

READINGS

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I: Zechariah 9:9-10 Psalm: 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13-14 Reading II: Romans 8:9, 11-13 Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30

look at his own life and make that list. And even if there is some person who has no worries or sadness for himself, he must be a very lonely person if he is not carrying a bur-den for someone else whom he loves.

So, in what sense is Christ’s yoke easy and his burden light?

To see why Christ’s saying really is true af-ter all, consider the condition Christ sets for getting the gift he offers to us, the easy yoke and the light burden: “Come to me,” he says.

To come to someone is to be willing to be united with that person. It is to be open to him, to let his will make a difference to what you yourself will and do. This isn’t safe, generally speaking.

But when the person to whom you come is Christ himself, the vulnerability which openness brings with it is more than matched by the love Christ gives. In the gift of that love, everything that might be loss is turned into gift given and gift received, to be returned again in love.

Even death is like this. You do not have to face death as if it were a depredation. Within the love of Christ, what might be only irrevocable loss of your life can be-come a sharing with Christ too. You can offer your life as gift to Christ, with Christ, for Christ, as you go through death to ar-rive at life in love in Christ.

And if even the heavy load of death can be lightened in this way, then what Christ says is true about every other heavy burden, too: in coming to him, in shared love with him, we will find that his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
