Gold Life MasterGail Bell of King of Prussia PA took an

advance save on this deal, but it turned out to be amake the way she played it. That gave her enoughpoints to make her a Gold Life Master (more than2500 masterpoints).

Even though she had a minimum, Gail jumpedto game because she wanted to make it as difficultas possible for the opponents for the opponents toplay in hearts. It so happens that North-South canbeat 4♥ with four fast tricks in spades anddiamonds, so it was important for Gail to find a wayto 10 tricks.

The defense started with a heart and two clubs, and Gail needed the rest. She ruffed the heartcontinuation and got to dummy by ruffing her lastclub. She led a spade, and she eyed the ♠Q fromEast with hope. Sure enough, when she cashed the♠A, the queen fell. She drew the last trump andthen thought about what to do with the diamonds.

West had shown up with a lot of stuff, so shedecided to play East for the ♦Q. She knew from thecount that West had only two diamonds, so her planwas to smother the 10. She led a diamond to theking and shot back the jack. East ducked, but she letthe jack ride, and down came the 10. Suddenly theACBL had a new Gold Life Master.

Three Divers DealsBy Phillip Alder

The headline does not mean that this articlewill include submarine coups. Instead, “divers”means different in English, if not in American! Here are three dissimilar Spingold deals that caughtmy eye.

First, let’s have a declarer-play problem.Dlr: South ♠ K 9 7Vul: Both ♥ K J 9 5

♦ 9 3♣ A J 8 7

♠ A 10♥ 10 8 7 6 3♦ K 4♣ K Q 10 4

3♦ (1) 4♦ (2) Pass 4♥All Pass

(1) Weak jump overcall(2) Game-forcing heart raiseWest leads the ♠4: 7, J, A. How would you

continue? The next two deals occurred during the match

between the teams led by Jimmy Cayne andPinhas Romik. To start, here is another single-dummy problem:

Dlr: East ♠ A 2Vul: Both ♥ K Q 8

♦ 5 3♣ Q J 10 8 5 3

♠ K 10 8 5 4♥ A J 9 6 4♦ K 6 4♣ —

West North East SouthPass 1♠

Pass 2♣ Pass 2♥Pass 3♦ Pass 3♥Pass 4♥ All PassWest leads a low trump, dummy’s 8 holding

the trick. What would be your plan?Momentarily, let’s go back to the first

problem. Suppose you run the ♠10 at trick two. Itwins. Now you play a club to the dummy and pitcha diamond on the ♠K. What would you do next?

The title of the second deal could be eitherWhat Might Have Been, or It’s Easier in Four.

Dlr: South ♠ 7 5 4Vul: Both ♥ K 9 4 3

♦ J♣ K 8 6 3 2

♠ A J 8 ♠ Q 9 2♥ 8 6 5 ♥ J 7♦ Q 8 4 3 ♦ 9 7 6 5 2♣ J 9 4 ♣ Q 10 7

♠ K 10 6 3♥ A Q 10 2♦ A K 10♣ A 5

West North East South 2NT

Pass 3♣ (1) Pass 3♦ (2)Pass 3♠ (3) Pass 4♣ (4)Pass 4♦ (5)) Pass 4NT (6)Pass 5♣ (7) Pass 6♥All Pass(1) Puppet Stayman(2) No five-card major, at least one four-card

major(3) Four hearts, fewer than four spades(4) Control-bid (cuebid) showing a great 4♥

bid(5) I’m not ashamed of my hand(6) Roman Key Card Blackwood(7) One key card

West led a trump. The declarer, Yeshayahu“Shaya” Levit, won in hand, drew a second trump, cashed the ♣A, played a club to dummy’s ♣K, andruffed a club high in hand. When they obligingly

split 3-3, South played a trump to dummy andcashed the two club winners, reducing to thisending:

♠ 7 5 4♥ 9♦ J♣ —

♠ A J ♠ Q 9 2♥ — ♥ — ♦ Q 8 4 ♦ 9 7♣ — ♣ —

♠ K 10♥ — ♦ A K 10♣ —

The last trump from the dummy saw everyonediscard spades. Now reading the positionperfectly, Levit played the ♦J to his ace to unblockthe suit, then exited with the ♠K to endplay West.

What a brilliant way to make a slam! But nowI must come clean. Levit was only in 4♥. And that,of course, made it safe to go for the endplay, although he was confident that he had worked outthe end position correctly.

Finally, back to the problem that was faced byTor Helness of Norway. Here is the full deal:

Dlr: East ♠ A 2Vul: Both ♥ K Q 8

♦ 5 3♣ Q J 10 8 5 3

♠ Q ♠ J 9 7 6 3♥ 10 3 2 ♥ 7 5♦ A Q 10 9 ♦ J 8 7 2♣ K 9 6 4 2 ♣ A 7

♠ K 10 8 5 4♥ A J 9 6 4♦ K 6 4♣ —

After winning trick one with dummy’s ♥8,declarer called for the ♣Q, East covering with the♣A and South ruffing. Now declarer should haveplayed a spade to dummy’s ace and continued withthe ♣J, discarding a diamond from hand. Then hewould have made the contract along the lines thathe followed.

However, Helness actually played a trump tothe dummy at trick three, after which he shouldhave failed. He called for the ♣J and threw adiamond. West returned the last trump. Underdummy’s ♣10, East and South pitched diamonds. Now came the ♠A, a spade to declarer’s 8, and the♦K exit. That left this position, with South needingthree of the last four tricks:

♠ — ♥ — ♦ 5♣ 8 5 3

♠ — ♠ J 9 7♥ — ♥ — ♦ Q 10 ♦ J♣ 9 6 ♣ —

♠ K 10 5♥ A♦ —♣ —

If West had led the ♣9, with East discarding aspade, the contract would have failed. Declarerwould ruffed with his final trump, but when East

won a spade trick, he could have exited with the ♦Jfor his partner to take the last two tricks.

However, West acted too quickly, playing the♦Q. Now Helness could ruff and exit with the ♠5to endplay East.

Finally, back to the full deal for the initialproblem:

Dlr: South ♠ K 9 7Vul: Both ♥ K J 9 5

♦ 9 3♣ A J 8 7

♠ Q 6 4 2 ♠ J 8 5 3♥ ♥ A Q 4 2♦ A Q J 8 6 5 ♦ 10 7 2♣ 6 5 2 ♣ 9 3

♠ A 10♥ 10 8 7 6 3♦ K 4♣ K Q 10 4

After taking the first trick with the ♠A, if youlead a trump immediately, you lose four tricks ingig time. But if you successfully run the ♠10 attrick two, you must still be careful. After crossingin clubs and throwing a diamond on the ♠K, youmust continue with a diamond to cut thedefenders’ communications. If instead you play atrump, East wins with the queen and returns her lastclub. Then East, when in with the ♥A, can lead adiamond to her partner’s ace and receive a killingclub ruff.

How I wish I had found that line of play at thetable. Then this article could have had a more self-congratulatory slant!

8 straight yearsat Bridge Camp

This is the eighth straight year that ThomasSchonfeldt of Denmark has attended the WorldJunior Bridge Camp. The 27-year-old Danishstar attended the camp for many years as aplayer, but now that he is no longer a Junior, hegoes as one of the workers. He will help run thecamp at Nyack NY all next week.

When he isn’t involved in bridge, he has aninteresting occupation – he assesses fire andaccident risks. That’s quite a job in thesetroubled times.

What goes aroundcomes around

Ten years ago JoAnn Sprung and Sue Picusclashed in the final of the World McConnell TeamsChampionship, and Sue’s team was the victor. Itwas very close – Sue’s team gained the lead on thenext-to-last deal.

But JoAnn and Sue were friends, so the matchdidn’t keep them from having dinner together afterthe match. Joining them at dinner were SallyWoolsey and Dori Cohen – plus a foreigner, BarryRigal who had just crossed the Atlantic from GreatBritain. They had an uproarious time.

What goes around comes around – JoAnn andSue were opponents in the Wagar Women’sKnockout Teams final, and JoAnn got her revengefor the loss in Albuquerque 10 years before.

But they’re still close friends, and last night thesame fivesome, including Sue’s husband, BarryRigal, had dinner together to celebrate JoAnn’svictory.

‘You owe me 2 beers’Marvin Kullbeck of Toms River NJ owes

Frederic Brown of Bayhead NJ two beers. Brownscored the Beer Card – the ♦7 – on consecutivedeals in the Thursday afternoon pair game.

You remember the Beer Card idea, don’t you?You have to win the last trick with the ♦7 in acontract you make or one that you defeat.

Against 3NT Brown led a low club. Declarerguessed wrong and played low from dummy, so thedefense took the first six tricks. Kullbeck switchedto a spade, and declarer went after diamonds afterwinning the ♠A. He had pitched a couple ofdiamonds on the run of the clubs, so Brown won thefourth diamond, cashed his top hearts and producedthe ♦7 for the last trick to set the contract five for atop on the board.

Kullbeck and Brown moved for the next roundand picked up the cards for Board 3.

Board 3 ♠ K 4Dlr: South ♥ J 6 5 4 3Vul: E-W ♦ 9 5

They bid their way up to 5♦, and Brownimmediately realized he could score another beercard. He also saw that he was headed for a bottombecause East-West were cold for slam, but hefigured at least he would have a story to tell if hescored the Beer Card on two deals in a row. So heorchestrated the play in such a way as to make surethe ♦7 scored the last trick in a making contract. Itwas the only solace for a bottom board.

Matthews names fournew head caddies

Jackie Matthews, the tournament director incharge of caddies at NABCs, has promoted fouryoung people to the position of head caddy.

They are:Daniel Schoenfeld of Manhattan. The 19-

year-old will enter Gallatin New York Universitythis fall as a freshman. He plans to study film.

Molly McFall, 19, of New Berlin WI. She isa third-year nursing student at the University ofWisconsin-Milwaukee.

Irv Schneider, 17, of Nehalem OR. He is 17and a student at Neah-Kah-Nie High School. Hisuncle is veteran TD John Ashton.

Alan Crank, 22, of Washington DC. He isstudying computer science at Northern VirginiaCommunity College. Besides caddying, he has alsobeen duplicating boards for the tournament.

Matthews said her caddy corps at the SummerNABC has numbered about 80 differentyoungsters. “I love my kids,” she said.

Tip your caddy, pleaseBy Meg Massie

You show up at 1:30 for your game, play forthree hours (maybe a little more), check the scoresand leave, but a caddy is there at least a half hourearly for sign-in and setup and at least a half hourlater for cleanup. It is fairto say that one session ofplay is usually at leastfour hours of work foryour caddy.

Our pay? At smallsectionals, I rake in $20per session. At regionalsand NABCs, my wagesskyrocket to $25 persession. That means thatwe caddies receivesomewhere between $5and $6.25 per hour. We are not paid overtime, butwhen we work a week–long tournament, weusually work at least two sessions daily, but we tryto work all four if we can. So let’s crunch somenumbers.

The morning game starts at 9, so we wake up at8:30 to get a shower and food. That food, by theway, is never provided, and in the big cities thathost these tournaments, it’s more expensive. Sobetween 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., we’ve made $25 butspent, say, $5 on breakfast. We grab lunch in timefor the afternoon game, spending maybe $7. Makeanother $25, $7 more on dinner, then back to work.

At midnight, we may hang around to work onemore session, but most of us will go to bedsomewhere in a hotel that we also have to pay for, unless we are lucky enough to have parents stayinghere, too. Most of us don’t.

We can’t afford a room on our own, so we shareand split it 12 ways when we stay at a hotel thatallows that kind of thing.

So, at the end of a typical day we’ve worked atleast 12 hours, made $75 but spent $29 (at least) fora net of $46, and we’ve had to sleep like sardines, compromise all privacy, put in a 12-hour day for allthose big dollars.

Repeat seven times and don’t forget travelexpenses – we caddies come from all over thecontinent to move your boards and pick up yourscore cards. Here in NYC we have at least ninestates represented, plus Canada and Puerto Rico.

If we work seven days with no days off, we’veworked 84 hours and made $322 net. That’s if weare lucky enough to average three sessions a day.

Why do we do it? Because it’s nice to get awayfrom home, and we like each other. In the fewmoments of the day we have to ourselves, we haveloads of fun. But when we go home we’reexhausted – and still more or less broke.

You can help.In a typical session, a caddy is in charge of

about 30 tables. If each of those 120 playersrealized just how vital caddies are to duplicatebridge – and decided to thank us for keeping thetournament going with a tip of, say, a dime, thatwould amount to an extra $12 per caddy persession. That could cover our basic expenses so wecould actually take home our $25 per session. Ifyou are feeling particularly generous, you mightleave a whole quarter per session, helping us to riseabove minimum wage.

If you can’t find quarters or dimes, we acceptpaper money, too.

Even if you decide you’ve spent enough onbridge, we’ll still be grateful if you just close upyour bid box after the final session.

The author recently graduated fromBridgewater College in Shenandoah Valley VA witha degree in history and is planning to be married inSeptember. Her fiancé also caddies on occasion, although not at the New York NABC.

Why he left HungaryGeorge Rosenkranz responded 1NT to his

partner’s 1♦ opening bid and played it there. Afterthe play, a defender from Hungary said, “InBudapest we would have bid 4NT with your cards.”

“I know,” said George. “That’s why I leftHungary.”

Silver Life MasterBarry Margolin of Arlington MA needed 25

points to become a Silver Life Master (more than1000 points) when he arrived at the tournament. Hepicked up 12 by coming in second in a BracketedKnockout and then got six scattered points. OnFriday he reached the final of Bracket 2 of theWednesday-Saturday Morning Knockouts, and thatwas a guaranteed 9 points. He played with MichaelAndresen of Cambridge MA in both knockouts.

Afghan winnerPeter Thayer of Naples FL won the “King of

Hearts” afghan that was pictured in the DailyBulletin earlier this week. His name was drawnfrom among the names of all competitors in thisweek’s Intermediate/Newcomer games.

Jackie Matthews, center, poses with the fournewest head caddies: Daniel Schoenfeld, MollyMcFall, Irv Schneider and Alan Crank.

And what about Jose Damiani of France, president of the World Bridge Federation? “I mighthave been a tennis star. I was ranked reasonably highamong French players. Or I might have been a rallysports car driver. I’ve done some of that and I alwaysenjoyed it.”

Paul Soloway isn’t sure what he’d be doing, buthe’s sure he would have been a success. “I wasdesigning avionics chips for a while, but they let mego because I didn’t have enough engineeringexperience. I could have gone back to school, but in1965 I got an offer I couldn’t refuse. MalcolmBrachman asked if I would like to play pro with hisgroup.

“That was it. I said yes and I’ve never lookedback. I have no regrets – it’s just been fantastic. I livemy own life, I work a lot or a little – it’s up to me. Imeet interesting people and I’ve traveled all over theworld. Why would I ever want to do anything else?”

At first Bobby Levin thought he would be doingstock options. “No, I don’t think so. I got into stockoptions because of my contacts in bridge. I wasstudying criminal law back in 1981, so maybe I’d bea big criminal lawyer. But when we won theBermuda Bowl in 1981, that was the end of criminallaw for me.”

We might have had another lawyer – GrantBaze. “I always had an interest in the law, but notcourtroom law. I would be in constitutional law.”

Bob Hamman worked hard getting ready for hiscareer as a mathematician. He studied engineeringoriginally, but then switched to physics and math.Everything was going along fine until a friend hadthis to say: “Show me a man who works and I’llshow you a failure.” That did it – Hamman didn’twant to be a failure. So he gave up any thought ofworking and just played bridge.

Allan Cokin would be a college professorteaching American literature. “I actually did it for awhile,” he said.

Andrew Robson says he is better known for histeaching than for his bridge playing in Great Britain.“Teaching is my passion. If I hadn’t wandered intothe bridge world, I’d be teaching math in a secondaryschool.”

When Tournament Director Roger Putnam whathe’d be doing if bridge wasn’t available, he lookedpuzzled. “I don’t know. I never really thought aboutit. I guess I’d be working as an accountant in acrowded dark office somewhere, but I’m really gladbridge was available.”

Michael Rosenberg sounded just as excited asPutnam about being an accountant. “That’s probablywhat I would be doing, but I’m glad I’m not.”

Tournament Director Guillermo Poplawsky hadno hesitation answering the question. “I’d be a civilengineer working on construction projects. That’swhat I did before I found bridge.”

Another pro who would be into scientific workwould be Sam Lev. “My entire early backgroundwas in chemistry, but chemistry really isn’t my thing.I might have been a chemist, but I would havebecome a serious poker player when I discoveredwhat kind of money their tournaments offer.”

“I guess I’d be trading stocks,” said Roger Bates.“I’ve had occasional regrets about living a bridgelife, but all in all it’s been a good life.”

After 15 years of looking for tax breaks for apetroleum firm, Barry Rigal had had enough. Helooked for something that had nothing to do withtaxes or gasoline – and he found bridge.

Geir Helgemo of Norway said he’d be acomputer programmer – but he said it with agrimace.

Mike Moss didn’t take the question all thatseriously. “I guess I’d be sweeping streets andwashing dishes,” he said with a big smile.

Getting to New Yorkwasn’t all that easy

Three Canadian Juniors — Shona Crauson andMatt and Mark Donovan — had a rough timegetting to New York for the World Individual lastWednesday. They drove from Kingston ON toSyracuse NY where they were supposed to catch aplane to New York City at 10 a.m. However, theflight was delayed several times because ofthunderstorms in the New York area, and finally theflight was canceled.

To make it worse, it was impossible for them toget on another plane to make it to New York in timeto play in the first session of the Individual. So theygot back in their car, drove for more than eighthours and arrived in New York City in the middleof the night. They missed the first session of theIndividual but played in the final three sessions.

A neat trump coupBy Barry Rigal

It’s not really fair when your opponents playvery well against you. Still, it provides material forthe column. Aviv Shahaf declared 4♠ redoubled onthis deal:

The opening heart lead went to Shahaf’s king.He ruffed a club and led the ♦J to North’s queen. Aheart went to the ace, and Shahaf called for the ♦K,losing to North’s ace. North led a third heart, ruffedwith the 7 and overruffed with the 9. On a diamondreturn Shahaf won and cashed another diamondreaching this position:

♠ Q 5 ♠ A K 8 4♥ 6 5 ♥ —♦ 4 ♦ —♣ — ♣ A

♠ —♥ —♦ —♣ K Q J 9 7

On the fifth diamond, if North pitches his heart, declarer leads a spade for the finesse. North has toput in the 10 and the king wins. Shahaf crossedback to dummy’s trump queen and scored the finaltwo tricks on a trump coup. He held ♠A-8 overNorth’s J-6.

If South had returned a club instead of adiamond, declarer ruffs and can achieve the trumpcoup, perhaps in even more elegant fashion.

East led a low club to dummy’s queen.Dickman then played the ♠A and a low spade, taken by West with the jack. The ♣10 was next.Dickman would have done better to put in the ♣J,but she rose with the ace to lead the ♥10 from hand.Had East inserted the ♥J — always easier to see inthe post mortem — the contract would have failed, but he played the 4, and Dickman made no mistakefrom that point.

She cashed two more high spades, thenfollowed with the high diamonds from her hand. Attrick 10, she exited her hand with the ♥K. East hadtwo heart tricks coming, but had to surrender theninth trick to Dickman’s ♣J at the end.

Note that it if East rises with the ♥A, that givesDickman two heart tricks to go with three spades, two diamonds and two clubs.

(1) Transfer to hearts. Here’s what happened at one table. The

opening diamond lead went to the jack and ace. Hecashed his trump ace and led a second trump toNorth’s king. North led the ♠Q and declarer duckedin dummy. So North led another spade to the 6, 8 (!)and 10! Declarer cashed the ♦K, ruffed a diamondto set up the 9, and drew the last trump to make 10tricks. The spade tricks were won with the queenand the 10.

At the second table the opening lead was the♥8, and declarer allowed the 9 to win. He won thediamond return and led a spade to the king. Asecond spade went to North’s queen, and he shiftedback to trumps, leading the jack. Declarer called forthe queen, which won the trick. Declarer thusscored up nine tricks. The heart tricks were wonwith the 9 and the queen, not the ace and king as atthe first table. And the spades were taken with theking and the queen, not the queen and the 10.

My wife Frances and I met at the last New YorkNABC in 1974, so this tournament has the feelings ofan anniversary for us. The opening lead was the ♥J, and my wifeducked! She knew that if she covered, East would winand shift to a club. If West had the ♣A-Q, she wouldgo down if the spade finesse also failed. So she tookout some insurance by ducking.

Sure enough, all the key cards were in the wrongplace, and she would have gone down to defeat both onthe deal and in the match if she had failed to duck.

Of course East could still have beaten the contractby overtaking partner’s ♥J with the ace and shifting toa club. However, this is not an easy play to find.

Mohr was not around to see the big comebackbecause he had to leave town, but the young teamwas pumped by the turnaround in the match.

Shi, known as Rock to his friends, and AlexHong are recent immigrants from China. They livein Delta BC in the Vancouver area. They knew eachother in China and played occasionally just for fun.The serious bridge began for them at the 2003Summer NABC in Long Beach, where they metMohr.

It was Mohr who matched the two Canadianresidents with their teammates – Hau Ge, anelectrical engineering student at Cleveland (OH)State University, and Yi Liu, who is a graduatestudent studying electrical engineering andcomputer science at the University of Wisconsin atMadison.

Said Hau: “This is an exciting game.”

eccentric, to say the least – and it helped West in theplay.

North led a low diamond to South’s king, andshe cashed a second high diamond, felling thequeen. The ♦J was ruffed at trick three. Instead ofpulling trumps and giving the defendersinformation about how strong his spade suit was,Ravipudi led a low heart at trick four, trying topersuade North that he was trying to sneak asingleton through.

North rose with the ace and could have appliedthe coup de grace by continuing with a heart, but hemade the fatal error of getting out with a club, allowing Ravipudi to execute a Vienna Coup bywinning the club ace.

After North played the ♥A, West knew thatSouth had every other high card because of the 1NTopener. He therefore ran trumps with completeconfidence that South would be squeezed in heartsand clubs. In the three-card ending, South could nothold two hearts and either high club. Whicheversuit South abandoned would provide the 10th trickand plus 620 for a 10-IMP gain.

When Drew Casen moved from New York Cityto Boca Raton FL in 1990, his bridge partnershipwith Jim Krekorian faded away. Drew and Jim weresuccessful players in the Eighties, mostly on teamswith Jack Schwenke of Miami.

Drew was ready to head home after the LifeMaster Pairs. But when lifelong friend Bob Jonesasked him to join a Spingold team and play with his

old pal Jim, Drew quickly accepted. So Drew and Jim played on the team captained

by Mike Moss and had a lot of fun even thoughthey lost a close match to finalist Warren Spector.

Drew says he and Jim are ready to start playingagain. ‘We’d like to get together on a good team,”said Drew.

Casen, Krekorian back together after 14 years New Life MastersJoan Savage of Canton MI placed first in

the Thursday/Friday Side Game, and that gaveher enough points to earn her gold card. Herpartner was Elaine Hall of Canton MI.

Susan Gilbert of Raleigh NC became aLife Master during this tournament.

begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Regent Parlor on thesecond floor of the hotel.

Spector and company – Mark Feldman, RonSmith, Billy Cohen, Gavin Wolpert and VincentDemuy – took care of the Mike Kamil squad withrelative ease, 178-115. Spector started as the No. 28seed, but the team has played as though thatnumber should have been a low single digit.

Jacobs was playing with Ralph Katz, SteveGarner, Howard Weinstein, Lorenzo Lauria andAlfred Versace.

Entering the fourth quarter, things did not lookgood for Nickell, reigning Bermuda Bowlchampions and possessors of many NorthAmerican titles. They fell behind 52-44 after aquarter and saw the margin grow to 32 at the break. On the first four boards of the third quarter, theJacobs squad outscored Nickell 32-0 and ended upwinning the quarter 53-14. With 16 deals to beplayed, Jacobs had a 141-70 lead.

All of it – plus 11 IMPs – evaporated asMeckstroth-Rodwell and Hamman-Soloway werespectacular, outscoring their opponents 84-2 tomake it to the final.

The following deal from the third quarterhelped put Nickell in the hole.

Soloway led a low diamond to Hamman’s ace.Hamman cashed the ♣K, then continued with the♦J. Weinstein ruffed, went to dummy with a heartto the queen, then played the ♦Q, ruffing when Eastdiscarded.

Weinstein then played a spade from hand.Soloway won the ♠A and could have secured plus200 by exiting with the ♠Q, but he got out with aclub. Weinstein, seizing his chance, ruffed the cluband ran trumps, squeezing Soloway in spades anddiamonds to land the doubled contract. Plus 790was good for 12 IMPs.

In their fourth-quarter comeback, the Nickellsquad had many double-digit swings, including a13-IMP gain on the following deal.

Rodwell won the ♠A and ruffed a spade, then

ruffed a diamond. When he pulled the last trumpwith a high heart in dummy, South discarded aspade. Rodwell then ruffed a spade and a diamond. When the ♦K fell, Rodwell could throw dummy’slosing club and later ruff out the ♠K. That was plus1430 and a big gain for Nickell.

SpingoldContinued from page 1

Lost in the shuffleDuring the Spingold Round of 16, it was

discovered that Boards 1 and 15 were exactly thesame. When the director was informed, he told theplayers to reshuffle the boards. Peter Schneiderspoke up, “OK. And can we reshuffle Board 11too?”

All in the familyRoy Welland’s Spingold team lost to his

wife’s team on Thursday, and he took it all instride. “It’s the easiest loss I ever had,”Welland said, “but I’m going to be upset ifshe doesn’t win now.”
