Jump for

July

On July 20, 2006, German professor

Hans Peter Niesward claimed he had convinced 600 million people

in the western hemisphere to

celebrate World Jump Day.

Everyone would jump at the same time and knock Earth into a new orbit. The result? Extended daylight

hours. A more uniform climate

around the world. The end of global warming. And a

great big laugh. It turns out the entire

holiday was a hoax. Professor Niesward was

actually a German artist named

Torsten Lauschmann. Of course, there’s no need to get jumpy. At 100 trillion trillion pounds, no amount

of jumping can move the earth’s

orbit or axis.

Harold was born in 1924 in a small house near the Boise River. He grew up in the Boise area before following his brothers to Sausalito, CA after graduating high school. He found work at the Marin Ship Yard where he learned to weld, cut and bend the steel for the decking and bulkheads of Liberty ships under construction. As World War II continued to rage, Harold decided to join the Navy in April, 1943 and was able to use his metal working skills while assigned to the Advanced Base Sectional Dry-dock (ABSD-1) stationed in the New Hebrides islands in the South Pacific. After 18 months of overseas duty, he transferred stateside to start pilot training in Louisiana. This ended when he broke his eardrum, but he was able to start earning his private license during this time. After being discharged in October, 1945, he returned to the Northwest, logging around the Yellow Pine area. He continued to improve his flying skills, which came in handy when he met Marjorie Stewart at a Valentine’s Day dance in 1947 at the Robie Creek Dance Hall and took her on their first date, flying around the valley in a two seat Luscombe. They married in July, 1948. Harold continued to log with his brothers in the summer and build houses in the winter. After four years, they started Westland Building Supply and built houses year round for the next 13 years. In 1965, when his brothers retired, Harold and his oldest son built his last house, his own, where he and Margie lived for the next 49 years; raising their children, 2 boys and a girl. Upon retirement at age 68, Harold spent the next two years volunteering his experience to help build the Capital Christian Center, a half day at a time. He spent much of his early retirement years helping friends and relatives with their remodeling projects and helping his middle son build his home. He also traveled with Margie to Korea and China, in support of an orphanage and missionaries. Harold and Margie moved to Alpine Meadows in 2015. They both love the food and the activities. Harold especially enjoys Wii Bowling, watching movies with friends, current events, bible study, exercise and all the wonderful toe tappin music!

Spending time with animals can be great for the mind, body and spirit! Above and right, we had a visit from Patch, a beautiful miniature pony. Thank you to Linda Crawford for the visit! And below, we are on a trip to Zoo Boise. Some of the highlights included the sloth bears, giraffes & the snow leopard. Thanks to JeNeale, Isaiah, Jen and Kat for joining us on

our safari adventure!
