FROM THE PASTORMother Theresa once said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” There couldn’t be a more perfect reminder for us. We often dwell on the past or we’re over anxious about the future; unfortunately, what we overlook is what’s right in front of us. I fell into this trap just the other day. Stressed about the future growth of the church, I caught myself daydreaming about how to incorporate our fantastic youth more in our worship services. As I was distracted by my ideas for the future, I failed to notice our youth calling my name to move out of the way as they were painting the walls of one of our church members. I came close to wearing a bucket of paint. At that moment I realized that while worrying about the future, our youth were acting in the moment—living out Christ’s call to service. We actually find this quite a bit in the Bible. In the Old Testament, much of the narrative formed from tradition and even somewhat of an obsession over the past: rituals were created to honor and remember past experiences; symbols and relics were scattered throughout the temple, recognizing the good and bad of the Hebrew people; and laws piled up like crazy. In the New Testament, we find Jesus helping folks unravel the laws, scripture, and words of the prophets to teach us how to live a life required by God. However, New Testament we also find some anxiety over when the Kingdom of God will be revealed. It seems like the Apostle Paul spent half his time addressing this in

his letters. He himself even showed some of this anxiety over the future. We can hear the words of the Psalmist, “how long oh Lord,” as the early Christians were ridiculed and persecuted for their faith— they were yearning for the day of Judgement, when Christ will set them free. Even though we all yearn to witness the coming kingdom of God, we’re reminded in Mark 13:32, “But about the day or hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, only the father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.” In other words, “we only have today. Let us begin.” As a church, let us not get overwhelmed by the growth of the church, let us not get attached to our music or order of worship, or Sunday school topics, let us not get discouraged by the growing number of non-affiliated folks out there, let’s not get obsessive over the words of creeds and confessions. Instead, let’s get started! Let’s participate in RCS meals (preparing and serving). Let’s all get involved in one of the church’s many ministries. Let’s be at Noah’s Ark helping out the teachers on a weekly basis or helping out with our youth. If we focus on today, we will find God’s action all around us. Let’s explore it together!

The summer is a lively time at Noah’s Ark Preschool with Mrs. Marie. Stop by Monday-Thursday and you will see a mixture of children from ages 3 to 9-years-old enjoying games. The summer program is not a traditional preschool program, but an option for children to play and socialize while learning a variety of different activities. The children perform science experiments and even have a weekly water fun day!

HEALTH POINTS

This month’s article will be a number of quick facts from two sources: editor of the Harvard Health Letter and the editors of the Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter.

FROM HARVARD:

Calcium: A few brief studies done in the 1970’s have been upstaged by more recent findings. The old news said women need calcium supplements to protect bones. Research now shows these supplements may increase heart attack risk. The recommendation now is 500-700 mg. daily with 800-1000 IU of Vitamin D. Most or all of your calcium should come from food at these levels.

Vitamin D benefits: Known to help form strong bones, this vitamin may also protect against autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, as well as colon cancer &heart disease.

Alzheimer’s Prevention: A recent study showed that exercising at peak capacity for 40 minutes four times a week has the power to halt, and even reverse cognitive decline. Aerobic exercise is actually more effective than any approved medication for avoiding Alzheimer’s.

Registration is underway at Noah’s Ark and will continue throughout the summer. If there are any questions, you may see Ms. Kelly, leave a message in the Noah’s Ark mailbox, or call the preschool Thank-you for your continued support of Noah’s Ark!Your Sister in Christ,

Kelly Squires

To sidestep knee surgery: Skip the soda. The phosphoric acid in soft drinks interferes with calcium absorption, destroys cartilage and contributes to bone-on-bone knee pain.

FROM TUFTS:

Coconut oil – a super food? In a word – no. The latest fad is just that, and may contain more saturated fat than you need.

Olive oil: Protection against breast cancer: Linked to the Mediterranean diet, olive oil showed a 68% lower risk of malignant breast cancer. The women in the study followed the popular diet and used extra olive oil – those who consumed 15% or more of their calories from olive oil showed the greatest risk reduction. More data needs to be gathered, but initial results look good.

These two publications contain many other “health points” – check them out on the Parish Nurse Office door.

Condensed from the Editors of the Harvard Health Letter and the Editors of Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter.

ARE YOU A KNITTER? Come join our NIFITY KNITTERS as we use our hands and gifts to further God’s kingdom by providing for those in need. The group is currently participating in three projects:  making blankets for Navy Marine Relief in Cherry Point; making afghan squares for Pine Ridge Reservation in Kyle, SD; and making hats, scarves, sweaters and vests for Appalachian Outreach in Glen Dale, WVA. We tag each gift with the following words:  "May the one who receives this be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace and wrapped in love."

IF NOT A KNITTER THEN MAYBE A QUILTER…

QUILTING BUDDIES: These ladies donated pillow cases and quilts to the children’s home and a veteran’s group in Kinston, NC, cancer patients, and babies at risk. Again if you want to use your hands and gifts, come join this group.
