Mr. Ace T;.rishstadt, an active mem-ber of the Chula Vista Live Steamers,will bring with him an operating steamlocomotive built to a scale of I%" tothe foot (l/8th full size). Ace willprovide an insight into the pleasuresas well as the frustrations of build-ing and operating a live-steam loco-motive. Live steamer clubs flourishthroughout the U.S., Europe and othercountries. Most have a track layoutfor members to operate their eouip-ment on. The Chula Vista group "rain-tains a track at Rohr Park, adjacentto the Bonita golf course.
Join us for an interesting eve-ning of steam, companionship andgoodies. Plenty of parking is availableeither in the l?ine Arts Gallerv lot orbehind the I.'odel Railroad Club" buil-ding. Mark the date; Friday evening,

STEAM-POV.'ERSD FREEDCM TRAIN ON ITS WAY
The American Freedom Train ison its way! This steam-powered rol-ling extravaganza left Delaware April1st and is scheduled to arrive in Cal-ifornia this iTovember. It should benoted here that the primary idea behindthe train was that it be steam powered.Your editor toured the original free-dom train, a diesel-powered version,when it visited San Diego's MarineCorps Recruit Depot in 19Lt-9. The steamversion, using ex-Southern PacificLines "Daylight" engine Wf9, willvery likely occupy the same track atI.'CRD when it visits San Diego nextJanuary. Your editor also had the goodfortune of taking part in a very mem-orable, historic occasion when, veryearly on the morning of October 17,195*f, Wf9 and Wf7 double-headed asteam special out of L.A. Union Stat-ion bound for the S.P. narrow-gaugeline in Owens Valley. Ch, what sweetmemories! The event marked the lastofficial steam operation on the narr-ow gauge with old Baldwin ten-wheelerHo. 9 carrying excursionists on thetops of boxcars and in an ancientcaboose from Cwenyo to the remotemining town of Keeler. The 9-spot isnow displayed at Laws, near Bishop,and sister >+-6-0 "o. 18 is ensconcedat Independence.
Local Santa ?e officials wererecently quizzed on whether or notthe train would be Cowered by steaminto San Diego. Their answer: "As faras we know now, yes." As San Diego'sturn draws nearer, firmer schedulingwill be available and you will beapprised of any changes as they occur.1'any PSRI-JA members will plan to followthe train down the coast from the L.A.area or further. The ruseum may evenconsider chartering a special "motor-cade" bus for those who don't wish todrive their own car. Word is the trainwill not leave San Diego via the SD &AE and Carrizo Gorge on its way toPhoenix. Rather, it is to backtrackvia Santa ?e to L.A., then East. SoSan Diego fans will have a dual oppor-tunity to see the grand old lady inaction. A live steam engine has notrolled over the mainline rails of anySan Diego railroad for 23 years (Santa

Fe was the last to use steam here in1953. PSRMA's Shay was used dead asa "dummy" on the head-end of a spec-ial train from the San Diego depotto national City to help that Citycommemorate its centennial in 19^9 •The special was pushed by a diesel.National City Mayor Kyle Morgan wasthe "fireman" and Dick Pennick actedas "engineer"). It's interesting tonote also that the first stop of thetrain in the bicentennial year of1976 will be San Diego, and that, Ithink, is a singular honor and shouldqualify it as a very special ocassion.Too. there is the question on every-one's lips what will become of theex-Daylight engine once the celebrat-ion is over. The fact is, at the endof 1976. W+9 will still have threeyears of flue time left. The word isdame W+9 will be repainted in heroriginal red, orange, and black "Day-light" livery and teamed up with someS.P. commuter coaches for fan tripsin the '.Test, as U.P. does with itselephant-eared 8Wf. If you like tri-via, have you noticed what would hap-pen if the «8« in 8Wf was a '9'?Visualize a doubleheader if you will,featuring steamers W+9 and 9W+J Somuch for trivia.
The freedom Train is a well-organized, well-financed private en-deavor, and all stops are being pul-led out; to make the Bicentennial anoccasion to remember. America's rail-roads, including the usually anti-railfan Southern Pacific, ore layingout the red carpet all along the tra-infe route. It is said that an S.P.Vice President wore a big sr.ile whenW+9 left Portland on its way to Al-bany, TTew York via the "Overland"route, and he was still beaming asthe steamer passed through Sacramentodays later. 1'aybe something like thisFreedom Train business will help toconvince S.P. and other anti-railbuffrailroad upper-management people thatthere are genuine commercial possibil-ities in merchandising stearr. excur-sions throughout their systems. TheTrain's promoters are now trying totalk S.P. into allowing them to res-tore to operation cab-forward No. *+2-9^ at Sacramento. After the FreedomTrain, I would soy anything's possible]
Be that as it may, herewith the tent-ative schedule, courtesy of the NorthAlabama Railroad Club's Hay, 1975newsletter "White Flags and Full Ste-am":
"The 1975-76 Bicentennial train,sponsored by the American FreedomTrain Foundation, will tour *f8 states.Train consist will be approximately23 cars—10 exhibit cars containinga moveable walkway, two showcase carsfor large item display, three trailertrain-type flat cars, two generatorpower cars, one tool shop car, fourex-Preamble Express cars and a staffdormitory car.
"The American Freedom Train Foun-dation is a private, non-commercial,apolitical, non-profit orginazitionnot under the control of any otherorganization. Four companies, namelyGeneral Motors, Kraft Foods, PepsiCoInc., and Prudential Insurance Co.of America gave donations of £l mill-ion each to serve as seed r.oney forgetting AFTF operations underway.There are no restrictions for operat-ing policies, routing, equipment, etc.beyond the basic concept that AFTFconduct its operations in a respon-sible manner.
"Primary motive power for thetrain will be Southern Pacific ^-8-^Ho. Wf9, an oil-burning locomotivewhich has been on display at OaksPark in Portland for almost two dec-ades. She was built by Lima in 19LfO.The oil-burner is being used becauseof problems in securing suitable coalin some areas.

The Museum's efforts to lease theCampo property are still progressingand we hope to have all of the invest-igation completed shortly.
In the meantime, PSRMAhrs been
-5-offered an opportunity to participatein a rail museum-oriented commercialdevelopment now in the planning stag-es. This proposed development will bein a high-traffic area of the Countyand would allow the Museum to deriveconsiderable revenue from admissions.It would also allow almost all of ourexisting rail equipment to be display-ed in one place for a change and every-thing restored to "show" condition.The Museum looks on this new proposalas an interim step? not a permanentanswer to our public operating museumplans. It is felt that the revenuederived from the one can be used tofinance development of the other.More developments vail be forthcomingsoon.

18 TACKLE CAR 1509 IN JUNE
It seems to be feast or faminewhen it comes to Museum restorationprojects, and the car 1?09 Bicenten-nial project is no exception. Onemonth we scratch to get three membersout to the car. Another time we're sooverwhelmed with bodies we're flabber-gasted] Such was the case on Saturday,June 21st, when 6 members, reinforcedby 2 guests, 9 girl scouts and oneEagle scout, showed up at the old San-ta Fe heavyweight Cafe Observationcar we are restoring for display withthe Coos Bay Timber Co. 2-8-2T at thefoot of Broadway as our contributionto the Bicentennial celebration in1976. The fine old car, along with an.old wooden refrigerator car, is storedon an usused track along Pacific High-way, courtesy of the Commanding Offi-cer of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
Despite the fact that the butaneburner we use to loosen old paint fromthe car's roof ran out of gas withina half hour, much was accomplished,thanks to the volunteer labors of JackLinn, Ken Helm, Larry Hose, Cass Wit-kowski, John Houston, Warren Pennick,Dick Pennick, and a giggling gaggle of
hard-working girl scouts and theiradult leaders from Troop 513? La Mesa.All of the scouts managed to cram intothe tiny galley on board the car andapplied several cans of "Brasso" tothe dingy surfaces of countertop andsink. Another group of girls is cluefor our next work date in July. Thegirls earn points toward a specialBicentennial patch through involve-ment with a bonafide Bicentennialproject, Member Colen Flagg stoppedby to see how things were comingalong. Special thanks go to LarryRose, who donated the cost of rentalof a portable generator and severalgallons of gasoline.

We havelots of projects on tap: restoring theobservation platform railing; strip-ping roof paint; installing new plat-form deck; fibreglassing body panels;prir.ing, etc., etc. Iring your lunch,your tools, and your enthusiasm, andjoin us for a fun day at 1-Iarine CorpsRecruit Depot. Enter from PacificHighway. Turn left immediately afterpassing guard shack and go down pastthe base service station. Then veerover toward the Pacific Highway fenceand suddenly you are there] We lookforward to seeing you.
