It certainly has been a busy couple of months at the chamber.
In early May, I attended the Ontario Chamber of Commerce annual general meet-ing which was not only a great networking event but an information platform to see what the Ontario Chamber is working on our behalf.
All of the candidates from the upcoming provincial election spoke at some point dur-ing the three-day conference sharing with us their perspectives on the economy of Ontario and why their party would be the best choice for a vote in October.
There was a presentation on the 2015 Pan American games which detailed how busi-nesses can get involved in the tendering pro-cess for various services that will be needed to construct venues for the athletes and pro-vided services to the games as a whole. I encourage you to check out toronto2015.org and get registered as a tender if you are inter-ested in this potential business opportunity. Policies were reviewed and voted on from all areas including competitive tax and regula-tory areas, energy and infrastructure and health care and municipal affairs.
The highlight of the weekend was Sandy receiving the Burnie L. Gillespie Memorial Award and being honoured in front of her peers. Overall, a very informative and enlight-ening weekend.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDJust recently, the scholarship committee
met to select the 2011 candidates for the Milton Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. Every year I am humbled by the level of achievement the candidates accomplish in their high school careers. I can only imagine what they will accomplish when they begin their careers as post secondary graduates. Congratulations to the following students on receiving a scholarship in 2011:
Ryan Heyden – Son of a chamber mem-ber
Samantha Tablada – Bishop Reding High School
Alex Judge – E.C. Drury High SchoolShailey Singh – Milton District High
School
GOLF TOURNAMENTThe chamber golf tournament is shaping
up to be another successful event for the orga-nization with over 200 golfers registered to attend this fabulous day.
I always enjoy the networking opportuni-ties experienced at this annual event and see-ing other business people in a less formal atmosphere. And as the saying goes “a bad day on the golf course is still better than a good day at the office”. These are words to live by in my opinion.
CANADIAN CHAMBER AGMPreparations are already underway for
Sandy and I to attend the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in St. John’s Newfoundland in September.
This year’s agenda looks exciting with the Prime Minister invited as a guest speaker and interesting topics of presentation including economic updates and policy resolution debates. I look forward to reconnecting with some of the Chamber executives I had the pleasure of travelling to China with back in March.
EXCITING EVENTSAs you are reading this update, you are
probably enjoying summer vacation hope-fully with your feet up and a cold drink in your hand. The Milton Chamber has lots of exciting events in the fall to increase your networking opportunities and help increase your business profile. I encourage you to take some time to attend a few of these events including the Farmer’s Market which also supports local farmers.
Have a terrific summer.

■ EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
I was surprised and humbled to be selected as the recipient of this award of excellence in Chamber management in May at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce convention. That it was a peer committee making the decision was even more meaningful.
I thank everyone who wrote a letter of sup-port for me and promise to continue to do my job to the best of my ability for years to come.
WWW.MILTONTHISWAYUP.CA This is the Town of Milton’s Economic
Development website that is a comprehensive accumulation of information businesses need to make a decision about expanding, begin-ning or relocating a business to Milton. It was developed by the MEDAC marketing sub-committee a couple of years ago as the place to go for Milton information.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit the site yet I encourage you to do so. It has information about wages based upon 2010 statistics, maps of available land, projected growth of both Milton and Halton.
This is a glimpse of the site:
IN MILTON’S VISION STATEMENT WE SEE OURSELVES AS, ENGAGING,
BALANCED AND CONNECTED. And it’s not a bad summary (if we do say
so ourselves...) If you’re looking for a balance of rural and
urban, of corporation and consideration, of health and hearth – Milton is the perfect bal-ancing act. From town hall meetings, to main street encounters and from schoolyard sport to boardroom brainpower, Miltonians are engaged in culture and commerce and com-munication (and even things that don’t begin with the letter ‘c’). And, like the hub of a wheel supported by spoke, after spoke, Milton
is connected to the region and the province and the country and the continent and the…(well, you get the idea) like virtually no other town you can name. All things considered, it should not come as a surprise that Milton is one of the fastest growing towns in North America.
Discover all it has to offer…
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS & VOLUNTEERS
The work of the Chamber could not suc-ceed without the generous support of our many businesses that sponsor our events, advertise in our publications and attend our functions. We are fortunate indeed to have over 40 active volunteers who promote the Chamber in every way possible from greeters at the Business After Hours, to sitting on our various committees that help take us to the next level and the Board of Directors who make the policy by which the Chamber is governed.
In a few short months you will bombarded with information about our 125th Anniversary plans for 2013… if you think you would like to be on this committee responsible for the 125th celebrations please give me a call. If you like a party, doing business and working with likeminded others this committee may be for you!

■ MILTON’S INFRASTRUCTURE
The pace of retail/commercial growth in Milton has been surg-ing forward for the past few years to match the continuing resi-dential population increase.
Gone are the days when residents felt they had to drive to Mississauga or Toronto for selection in shopping and restaurants. Now the choices are virtually endless.
But Milton’s strategic location and unparalleled growth have drawn the attention of developers now outside the control of Milton’s master retail plan. In recent weeks and months, two major competing US developers of factory outlet malls have announced they are going to be locating both a Premium Outlet centre and a Tanger Factory Outlet mall just outside Milton’s borders in Halton Hills. Our neighbours in Halton Hills are now capitalizing on their Highway 401 frontage lands east of James Snow Parkway to Trafalgar Road, to build massive retail develop-ments that fly in the face of Milton’s planned retail growth.
It remains to be seen how this will impact Milton’s shopping habits but changes will definitely come to the area as shoppers from across the GTA and beyond will be lured to Canada’s biggest new factory outlet malls. Those travelers who are familiar with the Tanger and Premium developments in the US know that they have even become stand-alone tourist destinations there.
Clearly there will be opportunities and threats to Milton’s existing business community. Can we capitalize on what is com-ing? Or will it put current retailers in peril?
How Milton Retail Has ChangedDowntown – Beginning in 1857, all of Milton’s retail was
clustered around the historic downtown core where shoppers came for groceries, pharmacy, hardware, barbershops and other essentials.
Milton’s Downtown Business Improvement Association has overseen the evolution of our downtown to what it is now, offering “unique and eclectic options with personalized service” with a
host of top-quality restaurants, pubs and fast food outlets attract-ing people at all times of day and evening. Milton’s weekly Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings from May to October lures families to the core and exposes them to the wide variety of retail and service outlets along Main Street. This past year half a dozen new stores have opened and other changes are expected. Milton DBIA executive director Donna Danielli comments,” I am not expecting the arrival of more big box stores to impact our existing downtown. In this fast paced world, people are being drawn more and more back to the stores where they remember your name and offer you individual and personal service. Downtown caters to people looking for more than what is offered at a box store – a customer who wants to find something different and unique. Downtown has been providing the same great service for over a century and a half and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.”
Milton Mall – The Milton Mall was the town’s first major commercial development when new residential lands were first opened up east of Ontario Street in the 1970’s and 1980’s. It has grown and changed considerably over the years and now consists of 307,000 sq. feet managed by Bentall Kennedy (Canada) LP, which updated the property with a $5 million investment in 2007. The biggest news for Milton Mall came in June this year when it was announced that Zellers is to be converted to one of 105 Canadian Target retail locations to be opened in 2013. Target, which operates 1755 stores in 49 US states, is the second largest discount retailer in the US after Walmart. The company says all Zellers stores will continue to operate until six to nine months ahead of opening as Target, when the majority of the stores will be closed for extensive renovations. On average, $10 million will go toward remodeling each location. The stores will employ between 100 and 150 staff with hiring to begin next year. Current Zellers employees will be invited to apply for jobs at Target.

THE CHANGING FACE OF
MILTON
July / August 2011 Page 13 Vol. 22 No. 4
■ MILTON’S INFRASTRUCTURE
Target acquired leasehold rights to 220 Zellers store locations for $1.85 billion. The conversion to Target can be seen as a major asset for Milton Mall drawing curious shoppers and bargain hunters back into the mall which in recent years has faced con-siderable competition from newer retail complexes.
“We expect the addition of Target to the tenant mix will be well received,” com-mented Milton Mall General Manager Stuart Hathaway. “ They bring a brand recogni-tion. This will bolster other prospective leasing develop-ments that want to ride along and get some of that synergy going.” He added they antic-ipate Target will undertake extensive renovations but that it is too early to expect to see store design renderings. He was unaware if Target had done a site inspection of the current Zellers property.
Milton Crossroads – Built in 2004/2005, this has been Milton’s biggest retail development to date. Located on Steeles Avenue at James Snow Parkway, with its Highway 401 visibility, it announced to the commuter world that Milton was here! Phase One including Canadian Tire (92,000 sq.ft.) and Walmart (134,000 sq.ft), Staples and a host of major brand retailers became a shopping destination for many of the ‘new’ Miltonians on the east side of town. Crossroads continues to grow and has since constructed another 50,000 sq.ft. expansion to Walmart and then began Phase Two on the west side. This 100,000 sq.ft. phase already contains Indigo, six clothing retailers and two fast food outlets with more buildings currently being leased for con-struction.
Riocan Centre Milton – Other developers quickly realized the asset of Highway 401 frontage. Beginning in 2005, construc-tion began along Maple Avenue, east of Thompson, south of the 401. The Riocan Centre is anchored by The Home Depot at one end and Galaxy Cinemas at the other. The project has been built in a number of phases bringing with it the Beer Store, Premier Fitness, four major restaurants and another dozen retail/service outlets plus banks and fast food service. Its most recent phase, now under construction, will add a flagship Longos grocery store to be opened this fall. Longos adds another element of higher end grocery shopping to Milton.
Further east along Maple Avenue, more major national brand stores opened up last year. Built by Rock Developments, these retailers include Best Buy (52,370 sq ft), The Brick home fur-nishings store at 26,350 sq. ft and Golf Town 21,507 sq. ft. plus a group of smaller retail stores.
Milton Common – As more and more residents moved to Milton, selection in grocery/essentials shopping became a priority. Milton Common, on the southwest corner of Thompson and Main, addressed those needs in 2007 with the opening of the Real
Canadian Superstore (135,000 sq.ft) and another 100,000 sq.ft. of retail, services, restaurants and fast food outlets. This centre is strategically located next to the GO station and easily reached by east end residents.
Kennedy Centre – At about the same time, A&P/Dominion moved from its neighborhood mall location on Laurier Ave. (replaced by a Food Basics store) and expanded with a 53,000 sq.ft. store on the southeast corner of town on Kennedy Circle at Thompson Road. With it, came another 50,000 sq.ft. of retail, services and restaurant/fast food, creating a large neighbourhood shopping centre.
Heading West… – While most retail development to date has focused along the 401 corridor and Main Street, the expanding south and west residential developments have created their own commercial market to fill their day-to-day needs conveniently. In the past two years, several neighborhood retail centres have opened up. The biggest is Derry Heights at the northwest corner of Bronte and Derry with 104,000 sq.ft. including Shoppers Drug Mart, two banks, mixed retail, service and fast food. Fieldgate Development is building 40,000 sq.ft. just west of there on the north side of Derry with Rexall as its primary tenant. On the south side of the same intersection, No Frills grocery store at 30,000 sq.ft. opened last year, along with another bank branch.
Further retail developments will certainly follow the residen-tial growth as it infills to the west and then moves south across the entire width of town from Tremaine to James Snow Parkway when Milton’s final phase of designated growth gets servicing and begins developing in the next few years. We can also anticipate that if/when a university/college campus is funded by the provin-cial government in Milton’s designated Education Village on Tremaine Road, south of Derry, that retail/commercial develop-ment will not be far behind, wanting to fulfill the needs of a campus and affiliated population.
In the meantime, the Town is planning a review of its retail master plan to address the future needs of our growing commu-nity.

■ MILTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
TORONTO: Sandy Martin, Executive Director of the Milton Chamber of Commerce, has received the highest honour for a Chamber professional in Ontario.
Martin was named the Burnie Gillespie Award Winner at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) Annual General Meeting and Convention in Toronto. The award recognizes a chamber professional of a local chamber of commerce or board of trade who dem-onstrates excellence in chamber management and outstanding commitment to the community through volunteer service.
“Leading a chamber requires a strong commit-ment to the advancement and economic pros-perity of the community, but the Gillespie Award recognizes an individual who, like the award’s namesake, goes well beyond the day-to-day,” explains Len Crispino, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.
“Sandy has certainly achieved that stan-dard. Her leadership has greatly benefited the Milton Community, as well as the entire chamber network.”
For almost 20 years, Martin has been the Executive Director of the Milton Chamber of Commerce. She has overseen the greatest growth period known to the Milton Chamber. With the guidance and leadership of Martin, the chamber has more than doubled its member-ship, staff and significantly increased the quan-tity and quality of every Chamber function.
Martin’s nomination was supported by individuals across the Milton region, who have attested to the true dedication of her work and mentorship. She volunteers within the community serving on a number of local committees. Martin serves on the Friends of Milton Hospital Committee and works as a member of Milton’s Physician Recruitment Committee.
“It’s no surprise to the board of directors and volunteers of the Milton Chamber of Commerce that Sandy won this award. She has dedicated many years to supporting Milton’s business community and the com-munity at large. Anyone in our community who has worked with Sandy is well aware of her strong work ethic, ingenuity and leader-ship capabilities.” stated Melissa Coulson, President, Milton Chamber of Commerce.

■ GROUP INSURANCE
Most business owners buy insurance that provides then with personal income if they can’t work because of an illness or accident. But if you can’t work, how do you pay expenses that will keep your company intact until you can get back to it?
With the Chambers Plan, you choose Business Overhead Benefits, along with your disability coverage.
Business Overhead coverage is designed to pay the actual expenses you normally incur running your business. The benefit takes effect 30 days after you become dis-abled, and continues for up to 18 months. If you’re a partner, rather than a sole owner, the coverage pays your assumed portion of eli-gible expenses.
What bills can the benefit pay? The broad range includes office, rent, power, and phone expenses. For salaries, the benefit pays the people who do not generate income for your company but are essential to its operations while you’re disabled.
Business and property taxes are eligible, as are license fees, leasing and amortization (including company vehicle), and the profes-sional services of an outside accountant.
Even regular office supplies and postage are included, as is interest on mortgage pay-ments, lines of credit and unpaid bills. You
Chambers Plan agent can walk you through a complete list of the coverage’s many included items.
Choose Business Overhead and you’ll tailor your plan to the level that suits your expenses. You can apply for benefits in incre-ments of $100, from $500 to $2,000 per month.
So don’t let an accident that happens to you disable your business, too. Plan to cover key expenses through your Chambers Plan group benefits.

■ SOCIAL MEDIA AND BUSINESS
Social media has major impact
on businessBy Halton Small Business
Centre Consultant
This graphic shows how much happens in 60 seconds on the Internet.
Social media is having an impact on the way we do business. It is changing the way we market, interact, network and communi-cate with others. It has evolved so quickly that people find it difficult to keep up. This has caused a lot of entrepreneurs to avoid it in their businesses. The running of a business does fall on the shoulders of the owner and it is often hard to take the time to learn and apply new tools.
What you need to consider is that you may be missing out on growing your business because you are not connected.
Social communication today is vitally important. The growing trend is to connect with as many people as possible. The old say-ing, “it’s not what you know but who you know” fits well with this trend. It originally started with MySpace and then Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube.com and Flickr came into existence.
And the list keeps growing, with new tools and applications being added daily. There is more opportunity than ever before to reach a bigger audience/market with the use of tech-
nology. The world is truly a smaller place! What has become a very interesting trend
in the last few years is the social sharing of experiences. People are connecting on a dif-ferent level. They can upload and download photos, videos, communicate with friends by
placing messages on walls, and post bulle-tins. Communities and consumers are also taking advantage and creating forums where events, notices, meeting changes, and new promotions can be posted. More and more

■ SOCIAL MEDIA AND BUSINESS
people are searching social media sites for answers. The opportunities for online mar-keting are endless.
Many businesses have incorporated and created a Facebook page. And why not? In May, according to Inside Facebook, there were 16.6 million Facebook users in Canada. Companies also use Twitter and “follow” oth-ers who use it.
Unfortunately, there seems to be some reluctance in many small Canadian compa-nies to invest in technology. Ian MacFadden, BDC vice-president noted that technology spending can help boost produc-tivity by making companies more efficient.
Efficiency is time and time is money. Demand is definitely there – con-sumers can find out just about anything online these days. They can check out events, blogs, tweets and even sale items on a min-ute, hourly and/or daily basis. Consumers have more power and knowledge and they do have the ability to affect the bottom line. As a business owner, are you doing all you can to connect with your clients?
Social connections within a community are very important because they bring the community together. Social media is going to continue to grow. What used to be calculated by ROI – return on investment, is now being called ROC – return on conversation.
Social media is bringing communities, business and people together. The business community needs to start sharing more expe-riences and using technology to reach their
clients. People are very busy these days and it is important to provide them with what they need.
However, to be successful, your Social Media strategy needs to be integrated into the core of your business and with your overall marketing efforts. Make sure you clearly define your goals first. For example, are you looking to strengthen relationships, recruit, build a mailing list? Then do some research to see which tools will help you achieve your goals. The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) has a lot of great informa-tion for business on social media. Check out MEDT’s E-Business Advanced Topics.

■ HALTON REGION
Did you know that Halton Region, work-ing with all levels of government and guided by a Transportation Master Plan, provides a safe, well-managed transportation network that includes 305 km of Regional roads, 88 bridges and 208 traffic signals? This network supports our vibrant local economy and the needs of residents and businesses.
We know, and you have also told us, that transportation and well maintained and planned for infrastructure, is critical to our residents and businesses and because of that we’re investing the majority of our 2011 Building a Better Halton capital program for Public Works into our transportation system. This year alone $132.6 million will be spent on road infrastructure widening and rehabili-tation.
The 2011 transportation capital budget includes funding for the construction of James Snow Parkway (Regional Road 4) and a grade separation north of Steeles Avenue in Milton; the widening of Dundas Street (Regional Road 5) in Burlington and Oakville; completing the Upper Middle Road (Regional Road 38) widening in Oakville; the Regional Road 25 widening in Oakville and Milton; starting the engineering on a grade separation at the Canadian National Railway crossway at Derry Road (Regional Road 7) in Milton; rehabilitating the Stewarttown bridge on Trafalgar Road (Regional Road 3) in Halton Hills; and more transportation projects that will help Build a Better Halton.
Widening our Regional roads to reduce commute and travel times is only one part of the solution to improving transportation in Halton – by encouraging more people to car-pool or take public transit, we will help reduce the number of one-driver vehicles on our roads.
For this reason, we’re proud to partner with Metrolinx on the Smart Commute Halton program.
This great program allows Halton compa-
nies to sign up as a Smart Commute employ-er to help improve their staff’s commuting options. Halton residents can also connect with the Smart Commute program through the Carpool Zone to find people with similar commuting options in order to find a carpool-ing partner.
I’m also happy that in November, Metrolinx announced the extension of the GO Transit rail service on the Georgetown line to Acton, with two morning and two evening trains to Acton scheduled to begin by the end of this year.
To further encourage public transit and alternatives to single-driver vehicles on our roads, Halton is also working with the Town of Oakville and City of Burlington to investi-gate the feasibility of Bus Rapid Transit lanes on Dundas Street (Regional Road 5) in Burlington and Oakville and Trafalgar Road (Regional Road 3) in Oakville.
We’re making a significant commitment to infrastructure because it’s the right deci-sion for Halton.
Improving your quality of life – whether it’s helping to reduce commute times or pro-viding you with clean, safe drinking water – is a top priority.
I’d like to thank all our residents and busi-nesses for their patience during construction as we work to Build a Better Halton and encourage you to learn more about the plan-ning and construction of our infrastructure projects from our website at www.halton.ca/construction.
Working together, we can ensure that Halton remains a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
If you have any Regional concerns or comments you would like to share, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. To receive further updates on Regional issues, please subscribe to my quarterly e-newsletter, “The Carr Report”.
