Busy times At the chamber

Business News

Melissa CoulsonPresident

it certainly has been a busy couple of months at the chamber. in early May, richard, sandy and i attended the ontario chamber of commerce annual general meeting which was not only a great networking event but an information platform to see what the ontario chamber is working on, on our behalf. there were the usual plenary sessions discussing the upcoming platform of issues that the ontario chamber will be working on during the upcoming year. Managing the provincial budget was a hot topic of discussion with all chambers agreeing that getting ontario “back on track” financially is a priority. i had the opportunity to sit at the Mayors roundtable along with other business leaders from Milton. We discussed the Veledrome project and the opportunities that it will be bringing to businesses in the GtA. there was a presentation on the 2015 Pan American games which detailed how businesses can get involved in the tendering process for various services that will be needed to construct venues for the athletes and provided services to the games as a whole. i encourage you to check out toronto2015.org and register your business if you are interested in this potential business opportunity. the chamber golf tournament was another successful event for the organization

with over 200 golfers registered for this fabulous day. i always enjoy the networking opportunities experienced at this annual event and seeing other business people in a less formal atmosphere. And as the saying goes “a bad day on the golf course is still better than a good day at the office”. After a hugely successful trip to china in 2012, preparations are already underway for next year’s trip. i encourage you to attend one of our upcoming information sessions if you are interested in this exciting opportunity. it was an unforgettable experience and i would highly recommend the trip to any member wanting to see the far east. As you are reading this update, you are probably enjoying summer vacation hopefully with your feet up and a cold drink in your hand. the Milton chamber has lots of exciting events in the summer to increase your networking opportunities and help increase your business profile. I encourage you to take some time to attend a few of these events including the farmers’ Market which also supports local farmers. Have a terrific summer.

important issues for Milton Businesses on thursday May 31, 2012 we co-hosted a breakfast event regarding the town of Milton Velodrome Project to learn about both the velodrome itself and the business opportunities with the toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games. the audience was made up of local member businesses from bike shops to locksmiths and everyone in between. Jennifer reynolds, director of community services took the lead and gave a comprehensive presentation on the origins of the project, where it is now and the final steps to ensure the facility is completed on time and on budget. the complete presentation is found on the centre pages of this newsletter. Bill Zakarow, director of Procurement for the toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games gave a presentation about the opportunities for business involvement and how to promote your company by registering on the toronto 2015 website. A world-class event, the Pan/Parapan Am Games is the second largest multi-sport Games after the olympic Games. it is the largest multi-sport event canada has ever hosted. 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials from 41 Pan American countries will compete at 40 venues in 51 sports and a staggering 20,000 volunteers will be charged with keeping things organized. funding is from 3 levels of government and from the games themselves. Below you will see the categories needing suppliers. if you can see a match you need to register with www.toronto2015.org and visit MerX to identify any opportunities to get business from the games.summary • We are “open for business” • Driving an economic benefit for suppliers is an important consideration to the overall success of the Games • We are committed to an open, fair and transparent supplier environment • Ramping up in 2012We will be doing business “in our backyard” • We have taken a leading approach to supplier

diversity. this approach was designed to leave a legacy of sustainable supplier diversity growth in ontario. • We will announce all procurement requirements and current business opportunities through MerX, the website for canadian public and private tenders • Market your business

gta WEst corriDor EnvironmEntal assEssmEnt stuDy on June 11, 2012 the Ministry of transportation and project team consultants from Mccormick rankin gave a presentation to Milton community services standing committee on the preferred option for the GtA West transportation corridor. the preferred option for Mto is a widening of 401 to 12 lanes through Milton. the chamber has been involved in the process for over a year and we are on record as opposing the widening of 401 to 12 lanes and supporting the creation of a new corridor through Halton Hills between 5th and 10th side road and linking in the area of the new tremaine interchange on 401. We believe that this option 4-3 is preferable as it does not impact those businesses along the 401 corridor, and best meets the needs of easing congestion in a fast growing area. the Mto preferred option will see an expansion from 6 lanes to 12. A 12 lane highway needs to be separated into express and collector (3 lanes each) with a buffer between. this will run between Guelph Line through to the 407 resulting in increased noise, smog, and impact on regional and local roadways should there be accidents along the corridor. this expansion will also affect between 20-30 property owners. We are told that this impact is minimal, however they have not been contacted directly by the consultants to date.

in the interim however if they should want to expand their facilities they may not be able to do so given the restrictions that Mto could place upon them.this decision will affect development along the 401 corridor into the future. contacts will be provided should you wish to have your say.

china 2012 testimonials

Bernie and i had a fantastic time. it was truly a trip of a lifetime! everything was orchestrated so well. i was fascinated by all of the sights we visited and blown away by the side trips. our tour guides were incredible! Never in my lifetime did i ever think that i would walk the great wall of china, let alone visit so many places in one trip. i am so proud to be a member of the Milton chamber, sandy and Banerji really know how to put on a show! i have raved about this trip to everyone, it really did change my life. it has made me want to go back and i have both of you to thank. We had a great group and we all got along so well. We got together in May at Boston Pizza Milton to celebrate, share pictures and memories and of course pizza! My husband who is a terrible traveler until he gets on the plane (of course he doesn’t think so) had a wonderful time and was so relaxed! Maybe it was the beer for lunch and dinner everyday. He wants to know when our next excursion is! Please remember we all get first crack at the next adventure through our Milton chamber. i will be sure to refer Banerji at Marlin travel, to anyone wanting a travel agent. thank you again for making this happen. Donna & Bernie Corrigan

the trip to china was an experience of a lifetime. We recieved wonderful treatment from the guides and the hotels, were truly first class. It was a painless adventure - I am envious of those who get to go this year and see Xian - that is supposed to be spectacular. from our trip, one of my lingering memories was of the visit to the tea plantations - fabulously beautiful.Tom

Anyone that has the chance to go to china with the Milton chamber of commerce, you are in for a trip of a life time. it is so well organized and run that you will be absolutely blown away. the entire schedule is carefully planned to the most minor detail, nothing goes by the way side. You will be in awe of the incredible accommodations that are secured each and every night. they are better than anyone could imagine. the local tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and are fluent in English.

they also have a sense of humour that they share about china which is informative, yet keeps it light and easy to ask questions regarding anything that you may want further information. every single tour is wonderful, but my very favourite has to be the Great Wall – it is awesome. i can’t say enough about how fabulous this trip was for us. Pat and Phips

the organization from inception to the return home was impeccable. from your assistance in completion of the Visa application, to tour guide quality, to venues in china, especially the accommodations, shows and gardens, were incredible. My family was exhilarated each morning to experience a new and awe-inspired world and expand our horizons. However, travelling with three females to those factories and showrooms, did not expand my wallet. Actually, it became easier each progressive day to move around because of my “lightened and enlightened” status. An unexpected extra was the effort and generosity of your firm in providing those supplemental two days and the airport bus service at no apparent extra charge. Not requesting extra funds for these extra services exhibited a “classy” quality not often seen in today’s business. My family would be honoured to travel with your guidance again anywhere in the world (almost). Banerji, we all enjoyed your honesty, assistance and comfortable disposition in all of our dealings with you. it was a pleasure and an honour to make your acquaintance. My family and i look forward to becoming your travel clients again in the future.Jerry Skupsky

We cannot say enough about our recent trip to china organized by the Milton chamber of commerce. from the initial information package, to getting visas to the actual trip itself, everything was well organized and the sights chosen were amazing. the hotels were indeed 4 & 5 star, the food was great, the tour guides were outstanding. i highly recommend this trip. May Business After Hourstorbram electric supply was the host of the Business After Hours on May 23. on a beautiful spring day over 60 chamber members and guests gathered at their location at 2800 Highpoint dr., ste. 101, for delicious hamburgers, drinks, dessert and networking. thank you to torbram electric supply for a wonderful evening!

it’s summer and while many people are thinking about vacations and relaxing, Halton’s Public Works department is think-ing about construction. this year alone, we’re investing more than $670 million to upgrade, maintain and build the region’s roads, as well as water and wastewater infrastructure. While these improvements are good news for residents, some inconve-nience during construction is unavoidable. together with our contractors we are work-ing to minimize these disruptions. to make sure you know of regional con-struction activities and possible delays, you can dial 311 or visit www.halton.ca/construc-tion for information on regional projects happening in your area. We’re also improv-ing our signage around construction areas so you can better plan your travel routes.

over the next four years, Halton region has committed to invest $1.7 billion on infrastructure because it’s the right decision for Halton. improving your quality of life – whether it’s helping to reduce commute times or providing you with clean, safe drinking water – is a top priority. i’d like to thank all our residents and businesses for their patience during construction as we work to Build a Better Halton and encourage you to learn more about the planning and construction of our infrastructure projects from our website at www.halton.ca/construction. Working together, we can ensure that Halton remains a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

When we speak with clients who are thinking of trading domestically, we advise them to choose: Specific geographic regions with appropriate demographics, and psychographics that match their highest probability buyers. this allows companies to make sure they are selling products or services to qualified buyers in the right place for the right price. creating a message that communicates an appropriate value proposition and triggers a desired reaction (likely a sales order) can only be done if you understand who is buying and what need you are filling. When you consider exporting, being specific is just as important. if you were selling domestically and defined your target market as “Canada”, any business consultant would tell you that you need to be more specific. As a Canadian firm, if you say “Asia” or “The UK”, you are being even more vague. rather than looking at exporting as opening the entire globe as your market, you should be placing specific pins on the globe where there is a specific qualified buyer for your product. declaring the world as your potential market will lead to insurmountable obstacles, a lack of tactical focus and inadequate ability to put a plan into action. choosing a foreign market that is specific, just as you would for your domestic market, will allow your efforts to be focused and much more affordable.

sErvicEs anD suPPorts availablE Last week i had the opportunity to attend the ontario export forum which brought together professionals from a number of government organizations

that support businesses looking to enter new markets around the world. Below is a list of some of the specific resources you may want to take advantage of if you are entering the global marketplace.

traDE commissionErs – At canadian Consulate offices in the United States and around the world, you will find specialized trade commissioners. these trade commissioners are tasked with understanding the local market in which they are situated. often each commissioner will focus on a specific industry. As a canadian Business, you may contact a trade commissioner to seek specific help and research. there are also trade commissioners positioned incanada who can help you assess foreign markets and sectors.

canaDa borDEr sErvicEs agEncy (cbsa) – the canada Border services Agency not only enforces the rules of international trade through the friendly people that meet us at the border when we come home from a trip abroad, but also work to educate importers and exporters on how to successfully comply with the rules and regulations they enforce. You can call cBsA on the phone, or you can meet them in person by attending an information session. information sessions are often free. nEW ExPortErs to borDEr statEs (nEbs) missions – our partners at the ontario Ministry of economic development and innovation host a “road trip to Buffalo”. At this relatively inexpensive trade mission, you will hear presentations with information about customs and border protection,

immigration and work visas, U.s. Banking, warehousing and shipping, and taxation. (Please see our previous post on NeBs Missions) there are two main challenges while learning to export. The first challenge is gaining an understanding of the foreign market you are targeting. You want to be able to effectively enter the market and compete. Are there political or economic differences in the country that effect how people choose to buy? Are there differences in cultures, beliefs and emotions that will impact your ability to communicate or make a sale? the second challenge is to navigate all of the regulations, forms and taxes that will impact your ability to move your product or people into your new market.

nExt stEPs the best advice is to become as educated as you can. read related books and guides, visit websites, attend training and information sessions, and perhaps most importantly, talk to experts and ask for help. start with a consultation with a small Business consultant. We’ll help you craft an action plan of which agencies you can call to have each of your specific questions answered or challenges addressed. contact Halton region’s small Business centre at 1-866-442-5866, www.haltonsmallbusiness.ca, [email protected] or visit us at 1151 Bronte road, oakville. don’t forget to follow us on twitter @haltonecdev and facebook at www.facebook.com/HaltonsBec.

Milton Breaks Ground on Main street Underpass

20 July / August 2012

Milton, ontario – the town of Milton has started construction on the Main street Grade separation project, funded in part through canada’s Gas tax fund. “our Government is proud to invest in this new underpass that will reduce traffic congestion in Milton’s downtown core and make travel safer and faster,” said the Honourable Lisa raitt, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament for Halton. “infrastructure investments are an important driver of economic growth and job creation, and we are continuing to deliver long-term funding to support key infrastructure improvements in ontario, and across canada.” “the Main street Grade separation is a crucial project that will help improve traffic flow on one of urban Milton’s principal roadways,” said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “on behalf of Milton council and staff, i would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors of Milton in advance for their patience during the construction period.” In 2007, Milton Council identified the need to eliminate the level crossing of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) tracks at Main street east, just east of ontario street. Building an underpass will improve air quality due to the elimination of idling vehicles, increase traffic flow on Main Street and allow for better access to the downtown business area and central business district, as commercial development continues to

increase downtown. While construction is already underway, the town is preparing for a busy construction season ahead in 2012. Main street east will remain open during the entire construction period, with lanes restricted from the Milton Mall entrance to Wilson drive from early April and continuing for approximately 24 months. occasional weekend closures will take place throughout the construction, the first of which was in May 2012 to facilitate relocation of the cPr tracks. the town of Milton is using over $2.8 million of its federal Gas tax fund allocation toward this approximately $49 million project. “canada’s Gas tax fund acknowledges that all orders of government must work together to address the pressing need for infrastructure investment in our municipalities,” said Gary McNamara, President of the Association of Municipalities of ontario (AMo). “stable and predictable, the Gas tax fund is supporting long-term investment in local priority projects right across ontario.” the Government of canada is focused on creating new opportunities for jobs and growth, and investing in infrastructure is an important part of this strategy. canada’s Gas tax fund provides stable, long-term funding to local governments to help them build and revitalize public infrastructure.

this program primarily supports capital projects such as local roads, water treatment, public transit, energy systems and waste management infrastructure that lead to cleaner air, cleaner water and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. in december 2011, the Government of canada passed legislation to make the Gas tax fund a permanent annual investment of $2 billion per year. the Government of canada, through the Gas tax fund alone, provides $746 million in funding annually for municipal infrastructure in ontario. Between 2010 and 2014, the town of Milton will receive over $6.6 million from canada’s Gas tax fund. for further information on the Government of canada’s infrastructure investments in ontario, visit www.infrastructure.gc.ca. Members of the public can stay informed about lane restrictions, temporary road closures, alternate routes and project updates by subscribing to an e-newsletter called “on track” at www.milton.ca, by visiting the town’s website and through notices in the local newspaper.

in a report issued today, responsible business conduct in a complex world, the canadian chamber of commerce describes how the government should oversee the international conduct of canadian companies and how companies themselves can improve their performance. “for most canadian businesses, responsible business conduct has moved from doing ‘good’ to doing ‘right.’ it’s not about philanthropy anymore - it’s at the core of their operations.” said Perrin Beatty, President and ceo of the canadian chamber of commerce. “during recent debates about government oversight of canadian companies’ international conduct, business explained what it did not want but still needed to set out its own vision,” he added. “responsible business conduct in a complex world makes it clear that companies are not satisfied with the status quo and want change.” the canadian chamber of commerce sought ideas from business leaders and non-governmental organizations (NGos). the paper summarizes these discussions. it outlines areas of strength in current federal government oversight and identifies potential improvements. it also sets out ways businesses could improve the execution and communication of their behaviour. “the majority of canadian companies continually strive to exceed accepted standards in the host countries where

they work with respect to health, safety and environmental standards. canadian companies must always respect the local, regional and national cultural needs of their host countries. We would encourage governments to consider a less punitive approach to one that promotes accountability and transparency with respect to their corporate social responsibility initiatives, “said rené Marion, President of Aurico Gold. Beatty concluded that: “While the canadian chamber of commerce opposes imposing punitive legislative measures and expensive, duplicative offices on Canadian companies, we strongly believe that ethical and responsible

from doing ‘Good’ to doing ‘right’: A way forward for overseeing Business conduct

behaviour is an important part of the canadian brand. Businesses need to conduct their activities safely, respectfully, legally and sustainably. Governments remain the primary means for ensuring economic, environmental and social protections and business must

respect these protections. if government, business, NGos and communities work together more constructively, everyone can benefit.” the canadian chamber of commerce is the vital connection between business and the federal government. it helps shape public policy and decision-making to the benefit of businesses, communities and families across canada with a network of over 420 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, representing 192,000 businesses of all sizes in all sectors of the economy and in all regions. some lively discussion was exchanged around the table this morning at our BAH committee Meeting. We all agreed that networking effectively really requires some advanced planning.

1. do you know which side of your lapel you should wear your name tag? Always on the right. it makes total sense. since we shake hands using the right hand, you are already facing in that direction. it is easier to sneak a peak, if you have forgotten the name of that person. 2. You need an elevator speech or marketing message (15 seconds) that lets people know what it is that you do, and how you can be of service to them.

3. since 75% of your time is spent with people that you don’t know, you need to prepare ahead. Brush up on some current news or read “People” magazine. Have a topic ready to share, one that you are totally comfortable speaking about.

4. set a reasonable goal before you go to the event. (e.g. speak to six people and collect their business cards)

5. follow up with the business cards, either with a telephone call (be brief) or with a mailing of a thank you note, or a piece of information from your business.

6. Assess your efforts. determine what you could do differently next time. Keep notes.

Most importantly, come back next month with fresh new ideas and a whole new awareness of the art of networking. Please share your successes with us.
