The Right ShadeIn 2011 Jennifer Aniston shocked fans with a brassy hairdo that looked like she'd dived head first in a peroxide pot. Jen admitted she'd donned blonde to hide a clump of pesky grey that seemed to sprout overnight. Fortunately her hair stylist quickly rectified the blunder and a few days later she was a gorgeous blonde. There are a number of different shades of blonde from platinum, light ash, sunflower and caramel blonde, to strawberry, honey, butterscotch and toffee blonde but not all shades suite all skin tones. The lighter your skin tone, the lighter you can go. For cooler skin tones, choose from platinum, to golden, strawberry or light blonde but steer away from shades that are white, ash and reddish. For darker skin tones choose honey, caramel or golden blonde but avoid platinum or light blonde shades. "If you want to look your best, your shade needs to complement your skin tone," says leading South African stylist and director at Jeauval Hair Salon Clinton Valjeaux. "When choosing the right shade, ask your colourist to see a hair colour chart (a useful tool for determining which one of the many shades to choose). Be open to what hue the colourist suggests. Remember, the ultimate shade depends on your condition, texture, and the history of your hair. If you've been colouring your hair for years with dark shades it might be a longer process to lift the colour. You might need several applications of highlights over three or four months before the perfect colour is achieved. Hair is made out of protein and bleach strips the protein and leaves holes in the hair shaft so when going light you have to use protein treatments and moisture treatments once a week - alternating the products weekly."

Step Into The

Want to be a blonde bombshell? Be ready for a serious commitment!

By Vanessa Papas

Done by a professional colourist, going from dark to blonde can be both dramatic and stunning. Photos supplied by Clinton Valjeaux at Jeauval Hair Salon

ightlIt was actress Dolly Parton who said: “I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb... and I also know that I’m not blonde.” Dolly, like millions of women across the globe stepped into the light when she started dying her ‘mousy’ locks platinum blonde. While becoming a blonde bombshell is more than just about colouring your hair (it’s also about changing your mindset), your locks are a good place to start! Going from lustrous chocolate to an icy head of blonde takes time, money and commitment but if done right, the rewards are oh so sexy!

First Do No Harm Ginger’s Best For GagaVery dark hair goes through stages of black, brown, red, red-gold, gold, yellow and pale yellow in succession before turning blonde. “When dark hair is exposed to a lightening product its black and brown pigments are the first to begin to break down or oxidise, then the red and gold pigments gradually oxidise. If you stop at this stage, you’ll likely end up with orange or ginger hair. Then comes the yellow and pale yellow stages, which are lighter versions of gold.Talking TonersAfter lightening your hair, your colourist will likely apply a toner. These are pastel colours used to cover unwanted tones (yellow, orange, red or brassy tones). “Hair toner is a wonderful tool that is great for colour correction and can also be used as a filler to even out the porosity,” explains Clinton. “When you bleach your hair not even your colourist can predict what colour it’s going to go. It could go yellow, red or orange. Sure, one of the factors that determines the colour is the length of time it’s left on the hair, but you can’t leave bleach on hair for extended period of time or you could land up with white bubblegum! The same colour toner needs to be used to equalise and correct the colour to all one tone. Some women have virgin hair and bleaching it results in white hair so toners are also used in this instance. Some colours go brassy or yellowy and some people like that but others prefer a more ash colour so a suitable toner to produce a more ash tone is then used. If you have dark and healthy hair but want to go light, rather do it over a long process and achieve better results than shock your hair. Expect about three hair appointments with a six-week break inbetween before you’ll get that perfect beautiful colour, while still keeping the condition and length.”

Tips From The ExpertTop tips on how NOT to end up with brassy, bright yellow, or frizzled fake-looking hair. Going blonde requires maintenance. If you are going to do it, make sure you can afford the upkeep every four to 12 weeks, depending on the desired blondness and your existing natural colour. The process from dark to light is best left in the hands of an experienced colourist. Box dyes are renowned for leaving hair orange. Never leave the salon unhappy. If it’s not the right colour, speak up. It can take years to grow out a bad colour and there is always something your colourist can do to improve the tone and hue! If your colourist pulls out a crochet hook and a plastic cap, reschedule with someone else. Don’t go in the pool for a few weeks after colouring your hair as the chlorine can mess up your colour. Blonde hair is more sensitive to sun and heat damage. Always spray on a thermal protectant before you blow dry, and again before you flat iron. To prevent breakage, get some anti-breakage shampoos, conditioners, treatments. CS

Going blonde is a bit like baking a cake. You can have all the right ingredients, in the right quantities, but if you leave it too long in the oven, it will burn. One of the most important lessons in hair colouring is that the final result depends as much on the ‘natural contribution’ of the hair colour as it does on the artificial dyes. There are a few steps you can take before going blonde that can ensure you hair isn’t left damaged. Don’t dye or process your hair in the months leading up to the bleaching and allow hair to air dry as often as possible (if you have to use the blow dryer use it on a cool setting). Don’t rush your colourist. Going blonde takes time so before you take the plunge make sure you have four to six hours free to spend at the salon. Don’t bleach on freshly-washed hair. Your natural oils help protect your scalp. During the bleaching process, if your scalp starts to really burn, speak up and tell your colourist as chemical burns can lead to bald spots. After colouring, insist on a deep conditioning treatment.

Celebs Who’ve Gone From Dark To Light In 2008 stylish actress Natalie Portman’s hair made headlines when she went from dark to light. According to Natalie, her mother claimed that the blonde hair literally transformed her into a new person – changing not only her appearance, but her personality too. The always stunning Jessica Biel transformed her dark hair for blonde in 2008. A poll conducted by a popular women’s magazine

revealed more than 80 percent of Biel’s fans were unhappy with the colour choice, and preferred the actress as a brunette. Trendsetter Victoria Beckham is known for her ever changing cuts, colours and love of extensions. In 2000, she stopped traffic when she donned a sleek blonde bob. She has been both light, dark and somewhere in between since. Twilight star Kristen Stewart chose to ditch her dark locks in 2007 for a light tone of blonde but, a year later she dyed her hair jet black and chopped most of it off to play Joan Jett in 2010’s The Runaways. In our opinion, Kirsten is better off a red-head. Natural blonde, singer Katy Perry has dyed her hair black since she was 15 because she felt like her natural blond locks ‘just didn’t look right’. In 2011, she went back to her roots when she transformed her dark hair blonde. If there’s one celeb who won’t conform to the norm, it’s Rihanna. A ‘hair chameleon’, Rihanna has changed her hair more times than we can remember but the one colour that’s really stood out is a buttery blonde hue she chose in 2012.

Did You Know?

Gold is the single most difficult pigment to

eliminate in the hair.

As a kid my hair was always worn one of two ways – long, parted down the middle, and dead straight – or messily tied back in a half ponytail. I don’t have many ‘bad hair day’ pics of myself (fortunately), aside from the dreaded school photo. This is probably one of my worst hair pics and the thick, white padded horse-shoe shaped garment on my head, commonly referred to as ‘the alice band’ to this day still sends shivers down my spine. My mother would always insist I wear my hair ‘off my face’ and she was adamant I pull my hair back, or wear a band. I was only allowed bangs when I was old enough to book my own salon appointment so my forehead always looked way larger than it is in real life! I went through a stage when I was in primary school (that continued into high school) where I would get a bee in my bonnet and cut my own hair (the school pic below is a result of one ‘off the wall cutting sessions’). I would just tie it up in a high pony and snip it off. Of course, it would be completely skew and I’d have to to to a hairdresser to fix it. Only once have I gone really short, and it looked horrible on me. I have a very round face and short hair makes me look like a chipmunk. My worst hair memory? I hated having it brushed – and still do. I remember constant fights because my hair was always so knotted at the back and it would hurt like hell getting a comb through it. Today I refuse to brush it without putting detangling spray on it first. Sadly, my six-year-old daughter has inherited my loathing for hair brushing and she refuses to allow me to touch her locks either.

VANESSA PAPAS

We asked Vanessa and Angela...What was your worst hair memory you have, when you were a kid? This is what they had to say...

"I'm not the most adventurous when it comes to my hair, so for as long as I can remember (and for as long as I had the say in how it looks) my hair has been pretty much the same — long, straightened and full of highlights. But I didn't have much of a choice when I was a kid — which is probably why I was left with a haircut fit for a boy. While my mom didn't always torture me with bad hairstyles (I did have long hair during most of my childhood), my mom decided to give me a chop one day… making me look like an adorable little boy! Yes, it was sweet…. but not the kind of sweet you want when people are asking you the gender of your child. No wonder she kept me dressed in pink, frilly dresses! And while I'm still not sure if mommy dearest was distracted while the stylist was getting scissor happy, or if she really did think it was cute, I am glad that my hair is in my hands now… well, the hands of my stylist, and my concentration (heehee). Today I make sure to keep it simple — I'm no Katy Perry, so there won't be any serious colour changes, or a big chop, instead I'm more of a Jennifer Aniston when it comes to my

hair… boring, plain and keeping it safe! But one thing is for sure… I will make sure my 15-month-old daughter has long, beautiful locks until she can decide what to do with it."

Whether she’s rocking a sleek high pony with a super-sized bow or wearing side-swept retro curls, Chiano always nails the chicest ‘dos and creates a sure-fire reaction.

Meet South Africa’s latest craze. A fiery red-head

whose love for style is as magnetic as her mix of jazzy pop music that’s racing up the airplay charts. A style diva that drums to her own beat, Chiano has taken the fashion, hair and beauty industry hostage with her bold approach, steering away from following the trend and creating her own

signature feminine look instead. We caught up with Chiano to get the inside scoop on

this sexy musician’s make-up, hair and beauty secrets.

Who do you think is the most beautiful

person alive today?My mom.

Who (living or dead) would you say is your style icon and why?

I’m not a die-hard style icon follower but

I have always admired Gwen Stefani’s style and

Marilyn Monroe. Gwen has such a sophisticated edge and she always experiments with fashion. I really fell in love with Marilyn’s simplistic signature fashion sense. She wore fashion with such ease, almost as if she woke up looking polished every day!

How do you keep your hair always looking so shiny and in such good condition? I haven’t really experimented with my hair so that should stand for one contribution but I like to get a hair treatment rinse at the Jeauval Hair Salon. I also like to use ghd Style Final Shine Spray after I wash my hair.

How often do you wash your hair, and how often do you use deep conditioner?I wash my hair every three to four days and deep condition once a month.

Best hair salon? My absolute favourite is Jeauval Hair Salon. I usually go to the branch in Hyde Park. They are excellent at colour and cut and they always listen to what the customer wants with a professional attitude. My kind of salon. I have been going to them for almost two years now and have never left there dissatisfied.

What is the craziest hairstyle you’ve ever tried? I’m not one to experiment with my hair so the craziest thing that I have ever tried was dying my hair red, which I have come to love!

You’re known to sport a blunt and full fringe. Have you always liked fringes? I think a fringe can make or break your look so if you’re trying out a fringe, make sure you look comfortable in it. My favourite thing about a fringe is that you can still have a funky full look even when your hair is tied up. Fringes also suite a lot of women.

Do you prefer long hair or shorter locks. Have you ever gone short before?I definitely prefer long hair on myself. I think long hair highlights the femininity of a women although I do enjoy watching women rock a short look that I wouldn’t dare to do! I only went short for an advert I did when I was younger. I cried for days.

What over-the-counter shampoo and conditioner do you use?I enjoy Elvive Colour Protect from L’Oréal. It keeps my colour bright and rich for longer.

things ChianoSky

can’t live without...

Your hair always looks salon perfect. Do you have any advice for our readers as to how to ensure your hair looks great in every photo, every time? I don’t think there is a specific formula but I always run my fingers through it quickly and I throw it to one side so that there is volume on one side and sleek on the other.

What colours have you tried before and which colour do you believe suites you best? I have only conditioned my hair darker and richer and last year I went red. At the moment I believe red is bringing out the best in me! There is a red head in all of us.

What’s your opinion on hair extensions?I’m all for hair extensions if they are done properly. The blend has to be done well or it can make you look a bit tacky, so if you are not sure, salon it!

What about hair accessories?I’m loving hair accessories! Bright flowers, glitter bling clips, you name it. My favourite hair accessory is a big bold ‘60s inspired Alice band.

What is your signature fragrance? Yves Saint Laurent Opium Vapeurs de Parfum. It’s just so alluring to me with its sensual and luminous pull.

Favourite fashion designer? It’s a toss-up between English fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and Italy’s Gianni Versace.

Do you enjoy dressing up or dressing down? I always enjoy dressing up, even if I’m just popping in to the local grocery store to buy milk. I try to embrace my best clothes every day.

What’s your motto or life advice that you live by? Through the journey of life, always be realistic and passionate.

Always keep a red lipstick in

attracts the eye towards you.

Absolutely always take off your

make-up before bed no matter

how late it is. This has definitely

helped sustain my clear skin.

If you have forgotten your make-

of body cream will make a great

substitute.

She always keeps

glitter with her wherever

she goes, whether she’s

just going to an event

or travelling. “It can be

used in the corner of

the eye, on your body,

or you can sprinkle

some in your hair,”

she says. “Glitter always gives me an extra

‘oomph’ and is another eye catcher.”

Experiment with colour on your eyes. If

you’re a ‘newbie’ , start off by buying a colour

that matches up with the colour of your eyes.

It will make your eyes ‘pop’ by enhancing the

eye’s natural tones.

Hardest part about being in the beauty and fashion industry? I think it’s important as a women to take 10 minutes everyday to make yourself look presentable, but the only snag about being in the public eye is that you don’t get to have many lazy tracksuit days as you are expected to put your best look forward all the time. Eyes are always watching — at events, at gigs, or if I’m just going shopping.

Tell us a bit about your latest album.I’m so excited about my new album. I think I’m in a new phase of my life and I’m experiencing emotions and adventures differently so I have a fresh perspective on things. I wish to make a timeless album with some RnB elements and disco. A live album!

ANYONE FOR SOME

From bubblegum pink, airforce blue and android green, to creamsicle orange, antique fuchsia and atomic tangerine, unicorn hair is the stuff legends are made of!

There's a secret fellowship of people who believe that

unicorns do exist. Since ancient times these mystical creatures, often depicted with 'multi-coloured' manes, have captured the attention of the world over. Now a new fascination has erupted — Unicorn hair.Hollywood has become a breeding ground for this super hot craze with celebs Nicole Richie, Ireland Baldwin, Chloe Norgaard, Ke$ha, Demi Lovato, Kelly Osbourne, Rachel McAdams and Kate Moss sporting pastel locks."Pastel and washed out colours like lilac, baby blue and pastel pink are hugely popular at the moment. While many might think choosing a pastel hue would be too outrageous, pastel hair dyes actually have a softer and lighter look than most would expect," says Neville

Diamond, senior stylist manager at Spoilt Hair And Nails. "Pastel colours can be worn by anybody from fair to dark on blonde or black hair. A funky style helps, otherwise you can end up looking like a grandma with her lilac rinse. Imagination and personality is the key to live this style."Neville says a disadvantage for this style is that you never know what the exact colour is going to be. "When it is time for a redo and the roots overlap it can cause hair breakage. Pastel colours damage your hair as the hair is pre-bleached, then the colour is added and then toners are added to the conditioner to dilute the hue to give the pastel effect. To prevent the colour from fading fast rather use dry shampoo and wash your hair less or wash it with a sulphate free shampoo.

Pink and purples can be maintained with a silver based shampoo as well as for yellows. It helps to know the general rules of colour and the colour wheel to help achieve the colour you want (purple gets rid of yellow). Ask your stylist to add a drop of colour to your conditioner.”An alternative to a full head of unicorn colour is three tone highlights or a full ‘natural-looking’ colour that compliments your skin tone. “The biggest colour return this season is rose gold, think Rachel McAdams and Sienna Miller. It’s peachy-pink, almost coral, but not as ‘unnatural looking’ as unicorn shades like ‘hot pink’, ‘atomic pink’ and ‘pink fire’. Rose gold works well on blonde hair and suites anyone with a light-medium complexion. Other hot trends include ultra-ash blonde with pink tipped ends and long ombre pastel hair. “Another option, which doesn’t involve bleaching, is a new trend called ‘hair chalking’. “Hair chalking is a temporary colour wax rubbed on hair to provide different colour sections to the hair, which is also a trend at the moment. Hair chalking can be done at home but you’ll get a far more professional look if you get it professionally done. Blondes can choose from any shade but soft pastel chalks in shades of aqua, pink and purple always look chic. Brunettes should go for bright, vibrant shades like blues, reds and greens, otherwise they won’t be visible, while redheads have to be a little more careful when selecting chalk colours and should go for green and purple but steer away from yellow which will come out orange on red hair. The colour generally will only last one shampoo; however, if the hair is more porous, such as colour-treated blonde hair, it can last a couple shampoos. You can use a clarifying shampoo to remove the colour more quickly if you want.”For those wanting a pop of colour, funky and brightly coloured extensions are the way to go.“Rainbow highlights come in a variety of colours and added either in a fringe or section of the hair, but if you want to be really daring it can be done all over the hair. Colour highlights are added through bonding a piece to the hair where you would like to see a bit of colour. It is specifically fun for parties. Extensions are totally styleable and heat proof and are available in a variety of colours and textures,” says Neville. “Extensions also come in different forms, from long and straight to curly. A hot new trend is tape in extensions, which is less damaging than bonds and more user friendly. Special care needs to be taken with extensions using an oval soft brush and never getting conditioner on the keratin bonds as this breaks down the keratin bonds glue and causes slipping.”

Tips To Keep In Mind

* Mixed pastel dye works best on light hair.

*Wash hair in cool water to maintain colour.

* Use dry shampoo instead of washing super often if you want your

colour to last longer.* If the colour you achieved is darker

than you wanted, you can always wash it a few times until you reach

desired level of colour.

Carreira-Coutroulisv anessa

By Angela BekiarisCeleb INTERVIEW

Vanessa Carreira-Coutroulis is one of the most beautiful women in South Africa — and not just because she held the title of Miss SA in 2001. The gorgeous star, who has four kids, always looks fabulous when

leaving the house. Taking care of herself and her family is very important, say the star, who shares some of her secrets with us, as well as the products she always has on hand. She truly is a role model in this country... so ladies, read on, take some tips and start making some improvements.

Page 15: July/August, 2014

Being a former Miss SA, do you feel like you have a lot of pressure to always look your best when leaving the house? I think like most women, I always want to look my best but I suppose I am aware that there is a slight chance that I may be recognised and judged for what I am, or am not wearing! I feel most confident when I’m well dressed, pulled together and groomed but I’m not trying to kid myself, I have four kids and there are MANY mornings when I leave the house with a messy bun and a tracksuit for the school run! I don’t have the discipline to get out of the house picture perfect at 06h00!

Did you always want to enter the Miss SA competition — and have you always been interested in beauty pageants, and beauty in general? To be honest I entered Miss SA on a whim! I saw a call for entries on TV one afternoon and thought ‘Why Not?’ It was definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time, it was my lucky day and I will forever be grateful for the entire Miss SA experience. I wasn’t a pageant pro by any stretch of the imagination but I was Miss Portugal/South Africa at 18 and participated in the Miss Portugal pageant that same year.

How important do you think nice hair is on a woman? Very! Oh Lord, I would be nothing without my hair! It is our crowning glory after all! I try not to mess with mine too much. If I use a flat iron once a month it’s a lot and I don’t colour as often as my hairstylist would like although I may have to start soon as Im getting more and more greys!

Who styles your hair? Razeena at Jeauval in Hyde Park.

Do you feel like you have to stay in shape and watch what you eat because you are a celebrity who is in the limelight, or because you want to? Definitely because I want to! I don’t remember my mother ever being ill growing up — as mothers we can’t afford to be ill can we? We’re the go-to for everybody in the family! I look after myself for my kids sake and if I happen to inspire some mothers out there to get fit and be in shape, than that’s a bonus too!

How do you keep up with different styles and trends? I don’t think of myself as particularly trendy. I’m a little too old for that! I like to think that I have a classic, timeless style. I’m all about classic, well tailoured pieces with a statement necklace or shoe to bring a look up to date. I’d rather spend R2 500 on a beautiful, well cut blazer that I’ll wear forever than on trendy, so-hot-right-now pieces that’ll make me question my sanity next week.

Have you ever had a complete hair disaster which you would like to share with us? I was about 18 and going through a bit of an experimental phase. I asked for dark hair with blonde highlights to frame my face… I looked like a skunk — not a good look!

Do you fuss over your husband and children when it comes to hair, beauty — and appearance in general? I don’t have to worry about my husband at all! He has exceptional taste and dresses really well, a trait I appreciate immensely. He actually ends up styling me a lot of the time! I do have a lot of fun with my kids

though, the things they make for little ones are just too

adorable nowadays. I can’t resist buying

them beautiful things, they have gorgeous little trench coats, biker boots, leather jackets, cardigans, tutus etc and I love putting

their outfits together! For all

my fussing though my eldest son still

insists on wearing his spider man pyjamas to

school! I can still control the triplets.”

What are your must-have hair and beauty products? Moroccan oil for my hair which I use as a de-tangler, treatment and smoother/de-frizzer — it’s fantastic stuff and smells delicious too. YSL Touché Eclat is my go-to miracle product, I won’t leave the house without it! It’s amazing for covering up dark circles.

Who is your style icon when it comes to hair and beauty? I have a few for different reasons: Sophia Loren and Ava Gardener for their classic, Hollywood bombshell sex-appeal, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett for their timeless beauty and flawless fashion choices, and Kate Hudson for her quirky, boho street style and Va Va Voom red carpet looks — she blows me away every time!

Which products are

always in your handbag when leaving home?

Eucerin hand cream, MAC studio fix pressed powder &

Clinique chubby stick in Super Strawberry.

What are your hair and beauty secrets?I try not to mess with my hair too much, preferring to leave it as natural as possible and that goes for my skin too. I wash my face with dove soap and use Nivea as a moisturiser! I do however use a good eye cream and SPF 50 on my face everyday, even if it’s cloudy.

Training can be hard... but looking good can be easy!

GORGEOUS Workout Hair

Hitting the gym or your nearest Pilates class doesn’t mean

you have to look scruffy and horrible. Just like you spend good money on gorgeous workout clothes, you too should make an effort with your hair — after all, who knows who you’re going to bump into. But while we’re not saying go for a blow dry on the way to a Sweat 1000 class, we are saying making a little effort — and be comfy too. Here are some fab ways to do your hair while working out.... and the best part is, it’s so easy.

The Pony TailIt’s plain, it’s simple and yet it can look fabulous. If you’re going for a run, doing some spinning, hitting a Pilates class or even just lifting some weights, get your hair in a pony — who knows, that little fling from side-to-side might even grab someone’s attention. Plus, it looks cute too.

Workout STYLES

The Tight BunThis is definitely the hair ‘do one needs when taking on a serious work-out. We suggest the bun for a Sweat 1000 class, CrossFit or even Bikram yoga, where you know you’re going to perspire... and know you don’t want any greasy hair getting in the way. Plus, there isn’t time in these classes to fix your loose pony tail, so keep it tight, out of your face and ready for action.

The Messy Bun/PonyThe stars love this one... it’s sexy yet messy. It keeps your hair out of the way, but almost looks like you just finished your workout before you’ve even started. It works — maybe for a quick run or gym session — but you might have to keep trying to ‘mess’ it up, if you know what we mean.

Page 26: July/August, 2014

26 CELEB STYES | July / August2014 |

The Half-Up ‘DoThis cute but still pretty hairstyle is really more for the relaxed sort of training —- be it a chilled yoga class, or a stroll in the park with your friend. You might find you get a little hot, but you can always pin it up if that’s the case.

The French Plait/BraidBallet, dancing, or even gymnastics... this is the neat and comfortable hairstyle to ensure you train hard and look fantastic. It’s not that hard to do either, so get your mom or friends to help you out before you start. Or perhaps you can get it done all on your own.

The Perfect Blow-DryFor when you’re not really training... just trying to impress. But don’t be surprised if everyone in the gym gives you a dirty look. You’re not meant to look picture perfect while training!

The British actress and humanitarian went from girl-next-door, ballet dancer and model to silver-screen starlet, Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF and the most naturally beautiful woman ever in a poll of beauty experts, beating sultry actress Angelina Jolie, the stylish Grace Kelly and even the timeless Princess Diana. "One of the most inspirational women of all time, Audrey was the quintessence of style and fashion throughout Hollywood’s Golden Age. Even long since her death, she's still admired for the stylistic icon she was," says Charlene Schlorke, Artistic Director at Gary Rom Hairdressing in Southdowns, Centurion. "Audrey's hairstyles embodied the essence of each decade she was part of. Never a hair out of place, she was flawless in any hairstyle. A fringe was a standout feature of most of her hairstyles. She wore her fringe in various lengths during the different decades appropriate to her style, face and age. During her younger days she was more daring, wearing her bangs in a blunter, shorter way whereas going for a softer, more flowing look toward her golden years. Her hairstyles are still trend setting, but the ones that caught the public’s eye was The Boy Crop, The Beehive and The Bun. One of her most legendary styles was the super smooth Pixie Cut. There are many different ways this particular style can be worn. Some prefer wearing it sleeker, smoother and going for a more polished look like Audrey in the 1950’s and in the new era like Emma Watson in 2010. Others dress it up by pushing their boundaries in a more edgy textured fashion like Miley Cyrus 2012.Charlene says oval and diamond face shapes are ideal for the Pixie cut but doesn't suite if your face is oblong, square or too round as it will accentuate certain unwanted features of your face. "The Boy Crop definitely stood the test of time with Audrey – it enhanced her natural beauty even more by boosting her elegant facial features and it could do the same for you," says Charlene. "Chic pony tails and tying hair up was another big thing for her. In the '60’s she perfected the ultra sleek bun which was inspired by one of her films Breakfast At Tiffany’s. This look can easily be created by someone with long hair.). Why not sass up your up do with some

Audrey inspired hair accessories? Audrey loved wearing something in her hair – rocking it out with a big flower or keeping it simple with a head band. She showed that you can wear a crown, even if you're not royalty. Audrey knew that every woman should be treated like a princess and was often seen wearing a feminine crown on her head.

While Audrey loved The Beehive, this style is a definite no- no in our generation. It has been replaced by the Bohemian look. Think big, natural texture, luscious hair incorporated with a lot of plaits."When it comes to colour, Audrey always veered on the side of caution, not straying too far from her naturally brown locks, although at one stage in her life she did lighten her hair a few shades. "I feel that your hairstyle is half of your overall look and your hair colour makes up the other half," explains Charlene. "The one compliments the other and you can’t compromise either of them. The hair market consists of various different colour products. Working for Gary Rom Hairdressing, the condition of your hair is our main priority. Healthy hair means high shine and soft smooth locks – both scream Audrey!"It is noticeable throughout Audrey’s hair history that hair colour was a prominent factor. Whether you prefer making the most of your natural hair colour or jazzing it up with cosmetic colour beauty, stays in the eye of the beholder. In Audrey's own words: “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows in passing years.”

HISTORY OF DREADLOCKS

Bob

Marley is known to have had the best dreadlocks ever; he brought them into the pop culture spotlight

in the ‘70s. Dreadlocks actually go way back to the 15th-century. They are also known as locks, dreads or Jata (Hindi) and are associated most closely with the Rastafaria movement which Bob was part of but he only embraced it later on in life. A common misconception is that people who have dreadlocks don’t wash their hair, but that is not always the case. Most are formed intentionally by leaving long hair to tangle together as it grows. The hair then twists and matts which creates a

rope of hair know as dreadlocks. Most people with dreadlocks wash their hair twice

a week. In the ‘70s, dreads became a fashion statement which was primarily

popular amongst the youth.

Dreadlocks, also called locks, dreads, or Jata (Hindi), are matted coils of hair.

How To Make Home Dreadlocks

It’s very easy to create dreadlocks, all you have to do is refrain from brushing, combing or cutting your hair and twist your strands together. You can hold the ends with an elastic rubber band or bundle your lock twist into a pony tail. You have to allow the hair to knit together naturally into locks of varying sizes. You should wash your hair with real Aloe not aloe gel. For the first month, don’t wash your hair, which helps to speed up the dreading process so that the virgin hair can become matted. You must sleep with your hair covered.

Salon Dreadlocks Often salons use beeswax to create new dreadlocks which can damage the hair. The beeswax does not wash out due to the high melting point of natural wax. Once the new dreads reach the locking stage the wax can be removed with hot water and a strong detergent. Water alone will not be able to remove the wax. Salon dreadlocks can be formed by evenly sectioning the loose hair into braids, coils, twists or using a procedure called dread perming. You can also backcomb and twist the hair which is a more popular method of achieving dreadlocks. Another method used on short Afro-textured hair, is by rubbing and washing the hair in circular motions going in the same direction also drying the hair with a towel in circular motions going in the same way. Regardless of hair type or texture and method used, dreadlocks require time before they are fully matured. The locking process is continuous as the hairs within the dreadlocks continue to form tighter and tighter knots and the un-matted hairs at the base of each lock continuously begin to follow the pattern of the more mature sections of the lock.

Page 33: July/August, 2014

Did You Know? When you have dreadlocks you must take care to prevent unwanted particles from becoming lodged in the dreadlock. Rastas cover their hair to keep the

locks free of ‘lint’ that is why you will always see a Rasta with a hat on.

Things You Should Know...

At first when you get your dreadlocks they might be tight and will probably hurt you. Cover your hair with stockings when you go to bed at night to keep fizz at bay. It’s normal for your scalp to itch at first. Don’t use a normal shampoo, you should use a residue free dreadlock shampoo. When washing your dreads, soak them well with water in the shower and squirt a little shampoo and gently work them into the dreads. Make sure your rinse your dreads well. Squeeze as much of the water out as you can then throw a towel around your head to soak any leftover moisture and after 15 minutes take towel off and let them air dry. Once your hair is dry, the perfect time to dread ball loose hairs, palm roll your dreads – Palm rolling is when you roll the dread back and forth between your palm like you are playing with small ball. Your dreadlock will knot and tighten easily now with your hair being clean. You can add a small amount of wax to smooth out the frizz as you go along. You can use a hair dryer to help melt the wax but be careful not to overdo it. Reapply wax once or twice a fortnight always after shampooing your hair. Wax does inject your hair follicle with necessary vitamins so it is a good way to condition mature dreadlocks. To tighten your dreads use a clockwise rubbing method and palm rolling (rolling the dread back and forth between your palms) to help the body of the dreads and the roots tighten.

Different hair for different folks they say! With diverse choices of hair offered, women around the world are finally sharing their latest splurge-hair. It ranges from different textures, colours, length and even prices — but price doesn’t stop African women purchasing their monthly fix! Let’s take it back to your childhood shall we? Remember the Benny & Betty plaits that your mom tried to perfect on you? What about ‘Singles’ that we now call Braids or ‘Da Brats’ the common name for Box Braids, the list is endless. African women’s style and hair remains one of the most trending buys for African women and fortunately it has become a business venture to some entrepreneurs. From the Westernised cultures to celebrities, women have been hooked to such platforms because of an addiction called hair. Early 2000 our society has been exposed to what we know as synthetic and human hair previously known as ‘Bonding’. Synthetic hair is inexpensive pre-styled hair that’s not for the faint hearted. It restricts from using flat irons because it melts when heat is applied and the sad part is that it can’t be coloured or styled so women preferred to rather spend on quality hair like Remy, Brazilian, Indian, Peruvian, Cambodian and Mongolian hair. Even so, the best buys which happen to be the ‘in thing’ are lace wigs and lace closure. It’s a given fact that women feel like a kid in a candy store when shopping for hair and to find good quality they shop until they find the perfect weave that best suits their personality. A good weave is more like an investment because they get something good out of it. Lace Wigs are processed hair that’s purposely made to appear like your real hair. Customers choose to buy it straight from the retailer or opt to have it custom made. You can choose to have a silk or a lace base depending how deep your pocket is.Silk Base is the most realistic weave that money can buy. They differ from lace base because of its texture and appearance. It also looks like the actual hair growing out of the scalp so women prefer it.

How It’s Applied?Stylists braid the hair in small cornrows for a flat look and sew it with a needle and thread. The market offers a glue or tape application, however experts advise that glue applications damage the hair line. It’s suitable to use tape or purchase a glueless wig that you can take out before going to bed and putting

it back on before stepping out of the house. For extra volume clients usually combine a quality weave and a silk base closure. Without a doubt hair has become a lifestyle and women spend thousands to achieve their desired looks. The longer the length, the more you pay. Weaves start from 8 inches (above the shoulders) up to 26 inches (above the hip bone). Prices are costly and they range from R1 500 — R5 000 depending which weave is used and how many inches it is. Most weaves are 100g and comes in three bundles-they can choose to take it off and reattach it to the scalp-and the best part about owning a weave is longevity. It lasts between six months to a year because it’s been tested for lice eggs and doesn’t tangle after washing or combing. It’s easy to maintain weaves with good conditioner and shampoo. Brazilian, Indian, Peruvian, Cambodian, and Mongolian Weaves also come in different forms: There are straight, wavy and deep wave preference to choose from.Other women prefer to keep it simple and natural by doing cornrows. They choose this look because it’s traditional, neat and remains very classy. It normally takes an hour or two to get hair plaited and it’s also painful because hair is pulled tightly for a specific style.

How To Treat Natural HairApplying oil based treatment to the scalp nourishes the hair and helps promote hair growth.Women have been struggling to find the perfect style and the advantage of investing in a good weave is the convenience and flexibility it offers. A good weave introduces a variety of useful benefits like style, versatility and low maintenance. There’s a demand of colouring or bleaching a weave and experimenting with colour is the latest hot topic. Women are influenced by singer Rihanna and have been adapting her style for quite some time. For women that wish to stay a while longer with their weaves they’re advised to try the micro-bonding method. Micro-bonding are strands of hair that is applied directly to the natural hair. It takes an entire day to achieve a natural look and it normally costs R5 for each strand. Therefore, professional stylists use round coils that match your natural hair and apply strand by strand. This hair is suitable for women that prefer to wear it a bit longer than usual — it lasts up to six months if treated.Just like make up and clothing, women wear weaves to enhance their features and feel good about themselves!

BLACKIt’s not just the stars who have bad hair days — we’ve all had them. But what about those horrific experiences which left you with tears in your eyes, and stories to tell? Stories which are only funny years later! While some hair disasters are able to fix, others have left people in complete tears and scarred for life. From drunk hairdressers, to hair almost gone, these stories are not just gobsmacking, but make us extra careful every time we visit the salon. And oh-so-thankful it hasn’t happened to us..... YET!

“Perms were the ‘in thing’ at the time — so I decided to have one done,” says Genevieve. “My friend came along to the salon and the stylist took a liking to her. While they chatted away, he forgot about me. By the time he registered and took the rollers out, I looked like a golliwog. When I got home my father’s eyes said it all — he asked me what I paid for it, and when I told him he said, ‘If I give you the same money, will you get rid of it?’ Needless to say I was in tears, and wanted to crawl up and die. I had to cut my hair and keep it blow-dried in order to leave the house. It was a complete nightmare — and almost 40 years later, I still cringe thinking about it.”

“One time I went to a salon in the UK on my lunch hour wanting a basic ‘trim’ and came out with one side of my hair about four inches shorter than the other!” says Alethea. “I was distraught! I ended up having to chop it all off to even it out. Worst hair cut ever. And I had been trying to grow my hair for months, so as you can imagine I was quite traumatised! Thank goodness I am not adventurous enough at the hairdresser to have any more serious experiences.”

“I was trying out a new salon at the recommendation of a friend of mine,” says Claudia. “I arrive at the salon and there are balloons and the atmosphere is very festive. I thought to myself: ‘I could get used to this’. I meet my new hairdresser for the first time and he hands me a glass of champagne. ‘It’s my birthday’ he proudly announces. Awesome I think... I get my hair washed sipping on the lovely bubbles I’ve been served. We sit down to cut my hair. I have always trusted hairdressers to know what they are doing — and this time was no exception. I give him the usual commands ‘I trust you, just don’t

cut it short’. As he is cutting my hair he tells me he is also sick and has taken way too much flu medication to be drinking (as he sips on his champagne). So now I am worried — I have a high, drunk hairdresser. Awesome!Next thing he divides my hair in half, pulls out a razor and just starts thinning my hair out. Big chunks of my hair landed on the floor. I sat there stunned, in silence, watching my thick gorgeous hair being reduced at an alarming rate. It was all I could do to not cry, when one of the other clients walked past saying ‘Oh, look at all this lovely hair on the floor’. I never went back.”

HAIR DISASTERS

Real-Life

By Angela Bekiaris

Annalisa shares her story on a day she wanted to be just perfect. “I went home after having my hair done on my Matric dance to shower and re-wash it and blow-dry it straight. I had an hour or less to get ready before being fetched.”

“I was bridesmaid at my cousins wedding, explains Andrea, adding, “and my hair, at the time, was down to my bottom. I asked the hairdresser for a fringe. She cut the top of my hair short and spikey and did the back in a plait. Needless to say I cried all day and ruined the wedding.”

“I went for the usual monthly highlights,” says Stacey. “I could feel my scalp burning after a while. I screamed for my stylist. She checked the foils and freaked out, rushing me to the basin. She had left my hair to lighten for too long in the tin foil and it was way too overcooked, if you know what I

mean. Needless to say I was left with bleached blonde hair instead of the usual light brown, and my hair started to break after the first wash. I never went back to the salon, but it took me months to get the condition of my hair back to normal — and to trust a hairdresser to put their hands on it.”

“It’s not so much of a hair disaster, rather a bad hair experience. It was my wedding day,” says Lara, adding “and I had organised for my hairdresser to come through to my house and have everyone’s hair done — from the bridesmaids, to the little flower girls and mom and mom-in-law, of course. My one bridesmaid spent the whole time in the mirror, telling the stylist how she wanted it. When the stylist started her hair, she kept changing her mind, and fixing every piece. In the three hours needed to have everyone’s hair done, the stylist spent over an hour just on her. Everyone was irritated, including me, and the rest of the gang had to be rushed as we had to start making our way to the church. Guess it took me until that day to realise how selfish she is. Scary to think what will happen when she’s the bride.”

The queen of the crop, when it comes to Vic’s hair, she has tried it all, from her 2009 Pixie Crop (which accentuated those killer cheekbones)

to her current Long Chestnut Layers. Vic even went through a phase when she sported a Punk Mohawk. But she is most famous for Graduated Bob — otherwise known as the Posh Bob. “Vic is a hairstyle icon extraordinaire,” says Shaughn Adams, well-known celebrity hair stylist in Cape Town and brand ambassador for Philips Beauty. “When I look back at when a young Victoria Adams first burst onto the scene and into our lives as part of the girl group Spice Girls in the ‘90s, she was really, in my opinion, not very memorable with her centre-parted, poker straight, shoulder-length bob, but come the Beckham years and she started to blossom. Over the years she has debuted a number of shorter styles, mostly featuring face-framing parted fringes and spiky crops. One thing we can always count on with Vic is her changing hair colour. She’s gone from platinum blonde and light caramel to deep brown to raven black.” Our all-time favourite Vic style is the Posh Bob, which takes a lot of technical skill to create. “Her A-line bob features a graduated shorter back, a straight and longer front, a high side part and as a special element elevated volume on the crown,” explains Shaughn. “If you’re keen on trying the Posh Bob ask your stylist to cut your hair in a straight and angled line from the nape to about 1 inch below the chin in front. This is a very easy style to manage on your own. It generally needs a blow dry with a round brush and a bit of flat ironing through the top layers. Products like the Philips HP8339 Straightener and the HP8233 Thermo Protect hairdryer work really well for this. Add a little serum through the lengths and ends and you are ready to go!” The Posh Bob is loved by millions of women not only because it’s so easy to manage, but because it can be adapted to suit almost any face shape. Victoria has an inverted triangle face shape and the style is perfectly suited to her but it can work for all our readers by simple adjustments here and there. If you have a very strong jawline, make sure that the front is longer than your jawline, so as not to widen the widest part of your face. If you have a round face get your stylist to create some volume through the crown area, this will elongate the face and accentuate the cheekbones. If you have a long or narrow face get some layering through the mid-section of the cut, this will create lateral width and help balance the face. The graduated bob is also an awesome haircut for naturally curly hair.”The hair trend on the red carpet this season is bold braids and romantic plaits and Vic has this down to a T. “Getting Vic’s classic plaits is easy and a very ‘go to’ look for long hair,” says Shaughn. “Try pulling your hair to one side, make a loose braid, secure with a hair band then open the plait up. Pull some pieces free around the face and you have a great style. To flip this braid into an up style, simply. Twist the braid into a side bun, secure with some pins and you are ready to go!”Vic is currently sporting long chestnut brown layers with caramel highlights framing her face. She moves between very dark rich toned hair and from time to time adds highlights around the face. This adds luminosity to the skin and helps define the movement of the haircut. “Vic is a hair chameleon who is consistently changing her hair colour,” says Shaughn. “A bit of advice, though, if you are considering changing your colour as often as Vic, find a really expert colourist. Go for a few consultations until you are comfortable with the stylist.”

Vic’s Beauty Secret’s Victoria can tong her own hair amazingly and she often does. To stay sexy and toned the 39-year-old gets up at 06h00 every day and runs over 6 kilometres a day. She doesn’t shave her legs and gets laser hair removal instead. After having breast implants Vic underwent several operations to get her back to a more natural-looking 34A bra size. Vic swears by Dermalogica products to combat her sometimes-oily skin. She never wears make-up at home and is sometimes seen wearing nothing but foundation and a swig of mascara while out at the park with her kids. Vic swears by the leave-in conditioner, Frédéric Fekkai. To stay hydrated Vic drink lots of coconut water.

44 CELEB STYLES | July / August 2014 |

Vic’s equally sexy counterpart, David, is just as passionate about his locks as his wife is and considered one of the most influential male

style icons. From his hair, to his clothes to his many tattoos, it seems that where David leads the masses follow.“Looking at David’s image as a whole you can see how it has evolved over the years,” says John Scott of Love Hair Salon in Gardens, Cape Town. “When he started out just as a young footballer in Manchester he didn’t seem to have too much of a meticulous look with centre parted floppy hair with quite a large amount of gel being his preferred look. It’s only once he became one half of ‘Posh and Becks’ that we really saw his image change.”David’s light locks in 2007 caused a furore in the hair world. “Everyone remembers the famous ‘double leather’ look. David changed both his hair colour and style, opting for a long sweeping fringe and a bleach blond look. This image basically started the ‘metrosexual male’ trend. Guys began to sit up and take notice and you would see more and more guys paying more attention to their hair and how they dressed,” says John. “David’s next image saw him go in the complete opposite direction and shaving his blonde tresses to a grade 2. He decided to rock this look for quite a few years and, in my opinion, this was one of his best looks. He has the face shape and strong jawline to be able to pull off any style but this just strips it all back and allows his features to really shine through. It’s simple, clean and looks great. He did experiment a little with detail lines (which isn’t really my favourite) but it allowed him to change his image even with the most basic of cuts.”Just like Vic, David has also sported a Mohawk. “The Mohawk that David made famous during the 2002 World Cup can be regarded as one of his most eye catching and famous images ever,” says John. “The cut was created by Adee Phelan who is one of my hairdressing icons. This look, at the time, was so fresh and it combined brave use of barbering skills, as well as colour technique. The cut also works asymmetric shapes through the front, which allows the cut to take on a more abstract shape. As David decided to grow out the striking Mohawk, he went for a more tousled blonde style, which is loosely styled and very easy to maintain. The great thing about this style is that if you are growing your hair out it is a great way to keep your hair looking ‘kept’ during that ‘in between phase.”While his locks are usually consistently gorgeous, David has made a few hair faux pas over the years. “We’ve still not forgiven David for long and blonde, the Samurai bun and those dodgy corn rows. Unfortunately for David, the styles above were just truly awful. Sure, some guys can pull off long hair (Jared Leto springs to mind) but David cannot. I think that the texture of his hair has a tendency to make it frizz out if there is no product in there. The way that he tried to control this was by tying it back in two ‘samurai buns’, which unfortunately was not a good look and the less said about those corn rows the better,” says John. In more recent years we now see David not necessarily going for crazy styles but rather working with length and shapes that will be easier to maintain but also that he can tweak here and there. From short back and sides with texture on top to having a little bit more length to play with. David knows what looks suit him and therefore works them to maximum effect. It also shows the versatility of these cuts, which makes them very salon friendly.“I think Beckham has now definitely found his look with his latest style. The slick side parting is a very classic cut. It’s smart, sophisticated and looks great. It also can be carried off by guys of any age,” says John. “With the trend now for guys dressing more classically and more dressed up, this style works hand in hand. This style has also been the reason behind an increase in the number of guys visiting more old school barber shops and using products such as high shine pomades as opposed to waxes.”

THE DAVID EVOLUTION

David’s Beauty Secret’s David wears moisturiser in the morning and an eye cream every night. He is said to favour La Prairie eye cream, which costs more than R850 for 15ml. A manicure is David’s favourite pampering splurge. He plucks his eyebrows and often has spray-on tans. A true metrosexual, he famously wore pink nail polish at the christening of Elizabeth Hurley’s son Damian. Rosewood has always been one of David’s favourite scents, as has the pink grapefruit and pepper. His fragrance of choice is Homme. “It gives it a kind of leather, cashmere, woody feel, and that’s something I’ve liked in the scents I’ve worn over the years,” he says.

Hair loss is a major issue with men, and some women. In your opinion what are the main causes?Alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, is common in both genders. The causes may differ, but the psychological impact is similar. Men predominantly experience hair loss as a result of DHT buildup, which disturbs the hair follicles. Although this action is primarily a male condition, it is on the rise in women. Females are more susceptible to hair loss as a result of hormonal imbalance post pregnancy and during menopause. Thyroid dysfunction, stress, nutrient deficiency and chemical damage are amongst other causes.

Does one’s diet play a role with hair loss? There is a direct link between nutrient deficiency and hair loss. Supplements can be used as a convenient and advantageous link to optimal hair and health. Research proves that balanced dietary supplements formulated with high quality ingredients are vital in maintaining hair in peak condition.

Hair Today...The low-down on hair loss — and preventing it.

Gone Tomorrow!

By Angela Bekiaris

Hair loss, or

Alopecia, is a very serious and disturbing condition for men and women around the

world. While stars like Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel make bald look sexy, the facts are, look good or not, it’s every man, and woman’s, worst nightmare. We chatted to Rasheed from Trichotin about their hair loss solution. Specialising in hair loss, Trichotin also advises on hair growth, improved hair condition, dietary tips, causes for hair

loss, options for treating hair loss and psychophysical implications of the

condition etc. This is what he had to say....

are known to cause hair loss, by affecting the hair follicle growth cycle and processes which deplete the body of vital nutrients. Individuals should review package inserts prior to use, to ensure they are familiar with product warnings and/or side effects.

How else can we treat hair loss — and how fast?Hair loss can also be treated through usage of credible, proven topical applications including certain shampoos, conditioners and serums. In addition, laser therapy and hair transplants are also suitable options.

What are the psychological implications of the condition? Alopecia can have severe psychological implications, so much so that it is one of the most feared side effects of chemotherapy. Hair albeit a biological luxury forms part of an individual’s identity and is regarded as the fountain of youth. It has a rich history of beauty associated with it. Without it, individuals can feel less attractive. Despite its cosmetic importance, we encourage individuals with hair loss not to shy away from the world, because character is embedded within.

Tell us about your product in more detail and why people should be using it.Trichotin is a convenient once-a-day breakfast caplet, designed to remarkably stimulate hair improvement. It is formulated to correct the underlying triggers of hair loss, improve follicle health, activity and ensure a balanced dosage of nutritional ingredients that promote healthy hair. Its high success rate has made it the preferred choice of product for leading hair loss clinics and exclusive hair salons.

Your tips on preventing hair loss from an early age?Implementing a lifestyle that nourishes the body. This includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, stress reduction techniques, adequate sleep, as well as technology free blocks, so that we have time to connect with ourselves and each other. These simple yet vital practices are fundamental to protect our human capital. Employing these practices will make us more competent and in control of our lives and minimise the chances of premature hair loss.

What should you do if you suspect hair loss?If at any point you notice deterioration in your hair condition you should consult a trichologist, as early detection is the first line of defence. Anything pertinent to your hair loss should be shared with your specialist including history, as it is key to diagnosis. Once identified and diagnosed correctly a suitable treatment should be administered immediately to improve the chances of turnaround and rectify the condition.

My hair is so dry, what is the best product to use to bring the life back in to my hair?

Again consultation is key! The professional stylist must have a chat to the client regarding what is best for their hair. It is essential to determine the level of dryness of the hair. We use the ‘Joico 4 Phase’ treatment. It is like a facial for your hair – the moisture and protein levels are restored. This lasts up to six shampoos.

The stylist should definitely have warned you. In our salon each visit from a client kicks off immediately with a thorough consultation. Whether the client

has been with us for a number of years or if it their first visit with us. Today it is VITAL to consult. It is the same as going to your Dr. You are not told what is wrong with you by mere glance. The following aspects we discuss in full before starting the service required. Moisture – covering the protein levels in the hair. Is the hair fine, medium or course? The condition of the scalp. The desired hair cut. The desired colour.Further going from a dark colour to blonde is a large process. The client needs to be informed of the exact cost involved. Each step necessary to reach the result the client would like is dependent on the these factors and of course, how many visits would be required. The best advice that we can offer is ALWAYS go to a salon with a good reputation when wanting to colour, to make correction on a botched colour or to change from your existing colour to another – lighter or darker. It might be on the pricey side, so save up – but in the long run the cost is worth it. The risk is minimal when what it is you want is achieved through professionalism – as opposed to fixing what went wrong through a lack of professionalism.

Using the right oil can dramatically change your hair care routine and

give astounding results.

JEAUVAL HAIR SALON, NICOLWAY, BRYANSTON (011) 706-4477 and (011) 706-9131.

MarulaArgon, Baobab, Macadamia, Olive, Sesame, Avocado, Coconut, Sweet Almond, Ojon Nut, Caster, Jojoba, Apricot Kernel, Kukui...the list goes on. Dubbed 'miracle oils' they all leave your locks soft and shiny but which oils work from within to actually reconstruct hair fibres and lock in moisture and which best suite your hair type and your pocket?"Hair oil treatments are a great way to nourish and hydrate your hair. They are also a perfect way to give your hair the exact vitamins and minerals it needs. Oils are the perfect cure for itchy scalp. The high fat content in all these natural oils gets absorbed into your skin to instantly soothe irritation and rid dryness," explains Clinton Valjeaux, Director of Jeauval Hair Salons. "Oils are now essential ingredients in most hair products from shampoos, conditioners, masques, elixirs, serums and treatments and range in price from about R200 to R400. All hair types benefit from oil treatments if you use the correct oil treatment for the specific condition of your hair. For example, if you hair is dry and course you will need a stronger thicker oil based treatment, one that contains avocado or olive oil. All our Switch products contain an essential oil, whether it be baobab oil (Omega 3, 6 and 9) for normal hair to vegetable oils namely olive oil, avocado oil and jojoba oil for dry hair and chemically treated hair."Clinton says for readers who may be worried using an oil will make their hair greasy there is a unique technology used which is a mixture of a carrier oil and botanical oil. The carrier oil, explains Clinton, spreads extremely finely to ensure that the botanical oil is dispersed properly, and then evaporates completely when drying to leave an ultra-light layer of botanical oil on the hair. Hair is weightlessly smoothed, has zero-gravity and looks ultra-glossy. Products that contain Lemon or Basil Oil help control the production of oil from the scalp and even reduce the oiliness from the hair. Argan oil has been dubbed Liquid Gold for hair. It's a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree

that is endemic to Morocco – hence the name Moroccan Oil. It is used to nourish and reconstruct damaged hair. It also controls unruly frizzy hair. Hair becomes less porous, keeps moisture and is strengthened from the inside."Oil treatments should be applied once or twice a week," advises Clinton. "Use your fingertips to massage the oil treatment into dry hair. Brush the oil through from roots to ends with a hairbrush until your entire head of hair is completely saturated. Then shampoo or condition normally. If you have more time, try an at-home hot-oil treatment. Heat the oil in the microwave and coat your hair with it. The oil should be just warm to the touch, not steaming hot. Then wrap a warm, wet towel around your hair and wait 30 minutes before rinsing. For really damaged hair, cover your oil-drenched mane with a shower cap and leave in overnight. But be warned: Sleeping with oil in your hair can be a bit messy, so use a thick, tight shower cap to minimise the mess. Depending on what condition you hair is in you should get the optimal results using Oil treatments recommended by your stylist. When used correctly you will definitely benefit from the results."Some swear by a hair oiling method known as Champi but Clinton says while this method does help alleviate scalp dryness it's not effective in the actual treatment of the hair shaft. "It's a popular Indian practice that's been followed for generations. Key ingredients are coconut, argon, avocado and olive oil. Champi does moisturise the scalp but has little benefit to the condition of your hair (aside from resulting in oily, limp and dull hair as dust particles cling to the oil). The oils' molecules are too large to penetrate the cuticle layer of the hair, meaning they cannot enter the hair shaft. Professional products have a special procedure which breaks down the molecules small enough to penetrate the hair shaft giving the hair it's strength without causing oily build-up." For dandruff treatment, essential oils can be very effective in minimising or halting flakes. "Dandruff is a fungus and Tea Tree is well-known as an effective anti-fungal and antiseptic," explains Clinton. "Pour a small amount of shampoo in your palm. Add a few drops

of organic tea tree oil to the shampoo before massaging the mixture into your head and scalp. If you use too much oil, it'll reduce the amount of suds from your shampoo. Try using only a couple of drops and adjust accordingly. Leave the shampoo mixture in your hair for about five minutes before rinsing.

Clinton Valjeaux, Director of Jeauval Hair Salons.

Clinton's recommendationHe suggests products such as

Switch Treatment Serum (Avocado Oil), Switch Treatment Masque

(Olive Oil & Macadamia Nut Oil) and Moroccan Oil Treatment (Argan Oil) to improve hair texture, provide

instant and long-lasting smoothness, mirror shine and leave hair looking

healthy and naturally beautiful.

How would you

descirbe the cut you are wearing now?

I am wearing a weave now. It’s a normal weave

with a front closure.I’ve also added a bit

of colour!

60 CELEB STYLES | July / August 2014 |

What is the best role you have played on TV to date?I can’t point one out, because all the roles I’ve played have been very special both as a TV host and actress.I must say though, that getting my big break as a youth presenter on Craz-e sure put me on a platform that assisted me in opening doors to the soapie Scandal and Generations, being a radio DJ on YFM as well as my role as TV host and Content Producer on Zaziwa right now.

What is your favourite performance hairstyle?

I am always in a weave! I love it! It protects my natural hair, gives me a lot of volume and it’s a practical hairstyle.

What’s your hair type?

I have thin coarse hair.

Do you change your style often?

I don’t change my hairstyles too often as that can become a bit of admin, I’m not a fan of spending lots of time at the hair salon. If it’s quick, then I’m your gilr!

What are some of your make-up must-haves?Foundation with great coverage, concealer, a contour kit, bright lipstick and lengthening mascara!

Name your five make-up tips1. Do not sleep with your make-up on.2. Exfoliate your lips to prevent cracked lips.3. Moisturise.4. Don’t cake it on unless you’re on a TV/photoshoot, then it’s ok.5. Always get the right foundation for your skin type and tone, if you’re not certain, ask the professionals.

What are your must-have hairstyling products?Heat protecting serum – we love our sraighteners, but they’re not very kind to hair.Hair oil – to keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. Find one that doesn’t leave your hair greasy.

Name your five hairstyling tips?1. It’s very important to consider your face shape when choosing a hairstyle. You don’t want something that will make your face look too small, too round or too anything! You want it to look just right!2. Youtube has great people who record hair tutorials, if you’d like to save some money, you can follow those tutorials at home instead of breaking the bank at the hair salon all the time.3. Consider your personality when choosing a hairstlye. Hair can also act as a medium of expression so you might want your hair to say somehting about you.4. Just because it looks good on another person does not mean it will look good on you!5. Professionals know best so don’t be shy to ask them for advice.

Who styles your hair? I go to different hairstylists for my styling needs.

Do you go to the same salon? I don’t go to the same salon, I alternate between my favoutire depending on my hair needs at the time!

If you could go back to any hairstyle from the past, which would you choose? I wouldn’t go back to any of my hairstyles from the past. Let’s just say a better quality weave makes all the difference!

Do you change your style often? My style has evolved over the years. Instead of buying fashionable items, I now purchase timeless pieces that I know I will still wear in years to come.

Do you have a Hollywood style icon? It’s definitely Rihanna. She’s brave, she pushes the boundaries and is not afraid to have fun with fashion!

Being named AVON South Africa Aspire fragrance ambassador, what did this mean to you?AVON is the leading direct selling company in South Africa and the world! It’s a great brand that offers an amazing earning opportunity for women! Being named AVON South Africa’s Aspire fragrance ambassador means that I get to be part of a company that believes in the empowerment of women and makes a difference in people’s life thorugh the selling of great quality products! I’m so excited that I get to work with a brand that I have loved since my early days in High School. I love that there’s always a strong message with every product, there’s always a cause being supported in every brochure. The story that I am part of is the Aspire story that encourages women to be bold, to make a statement,to empower themselves and believe that they can be anything and be everything! I am happy that my real life story is the Aspire story.

BEAUTY TIPS

There’s no denying the fact that Beyoncé was blessed with great

genes. But it doesn’t mean she doesn’t look after them. According to the singer, she uses many LÓreal products which she advertises on TV. Says the star: “I would never do commercials for products that I don’t believe in.” Bey specifically loves the brand’s Youth Code anti-ageing cream as well as L’Oreal Paris Infallible Never

Fails Stars Collection Lipcolour — an extra long-lasting lipstick with Vitamin E. The star has also revealed that the True Match Foundation is her favourite, adding that she mixes her foundation with MAC Studio Fix — although she does go foundation free for a few days a month to air her skin out. Beyoncé has also admitted to having chemical peels and laser treatments. As for fragrances, the star loves Heat and Heat Rush, as well as 273 by Fred Hayman which is her mom’s signature fragrance. And she’s pretty old-fashioned

when it comes to her hair — she loves using hairspray, in particular L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray, adding that she needs extra hold when her hair is curly. With her mom owning a hair salon when she was young, Bey is one to experiment. The star admits she’s always doing something to her hair from bleaching it, to cutting layers or copying fashionable styles. She has even cut her own bangs — that’s a fringe for those of you who weren’t sure. Plus, she’s revealed that she does on

occasion wear wigs and extensions, too. And she even likes to add false eyelashes from time to time depending on the event. When asked if she has any anti-ageing beauty tricks, Bey says. “I always keep a pair of Ray-Bans handy! And sometimes I put a little gold eye shadow in the inner corners of my eyes —

it’s more subtle than white, but it still really makes you look more awake.” She adds that she layers on bronzers for public appearances and does her own make-up for performances as it helps her get into the zone and become Sasha Fierce, her alter ego. “I’m able to sit down for an hour and play around with make-up, which I find really relaxing and fun. Before a tour, I have my make-up artist design a look for me — she draws it on paper to show me where to put everything,” she reveals.

FASHION TIPS

Beyoncéhas been making fashion headlines since she burst

onto the music scene as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child in the mid-1990s. Then again, it must be easy if your mom is a stylist. She has a sense of style, colour and clear understanding of what flatters her curvaceous figure. And her love for clothes and shoes is incredible. Her favourite fashion icons been Marilyn Monroe, Cher and Diana Ross, proves that the star isn’t shy to try out different looks, from the classics to the vintage risk takers. The sexy superstar also wears items from House Of Dereon, a range she and her mom launched eight years ago, which also features a plus-size range. Beyoncéloves to show off her legs in short dresses and skirts and loves to go more classic on the red carpet at times, following in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn. When it comes to handbags, Bey is often spotted with a square

black evening bag, matching smaller earrings. Sources say her red carpet attitude is ‘let the gown do the talking’. According to the sexy mom of one, never ‘over-bling anything’ — have just one big statement and ‘let your feet be your guide to fashion’. When it comes to shoes, the star loves her platform pumps by Giuseppe Snotty and Christian Louboutin. Funny enough, Beyoncé is spotted more in

flats than in heels — unless performing of course. Beyoncé is not afraid to play on her curves and show off her hour-glass figure. She sticks to classy, not trashy outfits and recommends picking one or two body parts to feature while keeping the rest under cover.

Which star’s secrets would you like revealed? E-mail us at [email protected]

and we will investigate.

‘Beyoncé is bootylicious — and loves it. But that means she needs to stay slim, trim and in shape - especially to perform the hours she does.’

While she was born with good genes, it’s no secret Beyoncé is

bootylicious — and loves it. But that means she needs to stay slim, trim and in shape — especially to perform the hours she does. The star undergoes a consistent gym training to maintain her gorgeously toned figure. Because she’s not genetically skinny, the singer watches her diet, including around 1 600 calories per day. She eats foods low in carbohydrates and calories and is known to rely on green veggies, wild salmon and chicken breasts to stay full. At times the star even goes on Vegan diets to lose those extra kilos. According to Bey’s trainer and CEO of 22Days Nutrition Marco Borges (who had the star on the 22-day Vegan diet): "She is all about health and wellness. She just wants to feel good." Borges adds that her go-to snack was the 22Days Nutrition Bars — her favourite being the Peanut Chocolate-Chip Nirvana, Cherry Chocolate Bliss and Pineapple Chocolate-Chip Wonder." And how does she transform back, you ask? Says Marco: "The transition [from vegan] was fairly easy, because [now] she's sticking to a mostly plant-based diet with some fish here and there."But that doesn’t mean she never treats herself — Bey has been spotted munching on cookies, explaining she needs a couple of treats per week and can’t resist sweets. Beyoncé, according to insiders, trains at least five days per week, which includes 30 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes of weight training. She concentrates on the thighs and buttocks, explaining that she works mostly the lower body and core. But she doesn’t just leave the arms and shoulders out — she’s admitted that she’d like to get her arms a little leaner. Sources add that Bey includes many body-weight squats, lunges and plies, along with plyometric exercises and sprint intervals in her routine. And while the singer and husband Jay-Z like to diet together, they love to train together too. According to a source: "They're like every other couple, they love spending time together, they'll work out together whenever its possible, whenever their touring schedules allow. They'll absolutely jump in the gym together whenever they can, she'll be running and he'll be on a bike, or she'll be jumping rope and he'll be running."
