TERM 3 ISSUE 16 2019

WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL PAGE 14 RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS

Full Steam Ahead – It’s all Happening! Firstly, welcome back to students, staff and parents for the start of Term 4. Although we have only been back at school a little over a week, students have been delving into a number of extra-curricular opportunities. As you would have also noticed, it is warming up very quickly. I cannot stress the importance of students being sunsmart – applying sunscreen, wearing a hat, drinking plenty of water and looking after themselves in the heat. Excellence in Teaching Nomination Inside this edition of Jumbunna you will see a nomination form for an excellence in teaching award. If you believe a teacher has gone ‘above and beyond’ as a teacher at Warren CS, please return your nomination to the school’s front office. Primary Principal’s Association. This week I will be in Sydney with approximately 400 of my colleagues undertaking professional learning at the annual Primary Principal’s Association conference. This year’s theme is ‘Building Us’ which focuses on wellbeing and how we further develop the growth of students at our schools. Speakers will include The Premier, Hon. Gladys Berijiklian, Education Minister – Hon. Sarah Mitchell, Mark Pesce, Hon. Julie Bishop and Dylan Alcott, amongst others. Swimming Scheme I cannot stress enough how important it is that your child is able to swim and be a strong swimmer. Every year, hundreds of children drown and many due to the fact that they are unable to swim. It is a fact that the one state – Queensland and the one Territory – Northern Territory who do not have a mandatory swim scheme also account for the highest number of fatalities per capita as a result. This program will be running between 19 and 30 November for students in years 2-4. Positive Communication Lastly, I would like to briefly speak about communicating with Warren Central School. Teachers are busy and are either always on class, preparing lessons or supervising children in the playground. Please make an appointment to either speak to, or see your child’s year adviser or class teacher, to discuss issues. I cannot stress the importance of positive relationships between school and home. Staying calm when discussing issues not only leads to better solutions but is a great way to role model to children how things should be done. It may take up to 48 hours before you hear back due to the heavy workload of teachers at our school. I ask for your patience and understanding here. Good news stories from around the world 30,000 children in Cambodia have been rescued from hard labour in the last 5 years and 180,000 prevented from being child workers (Phnom Penh Post) In the 2019 Global Childhood Report, children’s lives over the last 20 years have improved in 173 out of 176 countries. For example, there are 4.4 million fewer child deaths per year, 130 million more children in school and 94 million fewer child labourers. Mr Lovelock Principal

WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL PAGE 5 RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS

Welcome back to the last term of the year, also known as the busiest term! The calendar is filling up quickly with many events and activities. Some of these include the school fete, Kindergarten and Year 7 transition, Primary Prefect elections, Stage 3 excursion, School Swimming Scheme, Presentation Night and a lot more. Please keep your eye on the school Facebook page and future Jumbunna editions to keep up with what's coming up. It is also a good idea to check your child’s bag for notes that may have fallen into the void that is at the bottom of the bag!

School hats

Term 4 means hot weather, so hats are now a must for outdoor play. Students must wear a hat every Recess and Lunch when out in the playground. The ‘hat on, play on’ policy will be strongly enforced this term. Students without a school bucket hat will sit under the sheltered area of the playground or involve themselves in quiet activities in the library at lunch. Hats are available from the front office or the clothing shop for $15.

Uniform

There have been a number of students wearing incorrect uniform without a note to explain the reason for being out of uniform.

Uniforms are as follows:

Boys- Monday to Thursday- Lemon shirt, grey shorts/pants, grey socks, black shoes/boots

Friday – Lemon shirt, green shorts, white socks, joggers

Girls- Monday to Thursday – Lemon shirt, Tartan skirt/skort/shorts, white socks, black shoes/boots

Friday – Lemon shirt, green shorts, white socks, joggers

Prefect Nominees

Students who have been nominated for Prefect election will be presenting their speeches at our Week 6 assembly. Please encourage and assist your children during this time as it can be very nerve racking to speak in front of an assembly.

Kinder Transition

This term we will again welcome our upcoming Kindergarten students to the school. Preschool students who have enrolled in Warren Central School to begin in 2020 will enjoy two half days and one full day transition opportunities this term. If you are yet to collect the enrolment package (or have misplaced it), please see our friendly office staff to assist with this.

Stage 3 Excursion

In the last week of term 3, Stage 3 students were given a note to show their interest in going on the Stage 3 excursion in Week 7 of this term. These notes should have already been returned to school. Further information regarding dates and activities will be provided in due course to those students who have shown interest by returning their note and $50 deposit.

Most countries around the world celebrate on October 5, however, because this date was during the school holidays, in Australia we celebrate World Teachers' Day on Friday, October 25. The day was a great opportunity for everyone to recognise and appreciate teachers and the important role they play in shaping the next generation. Our Future’s So Bright we've Gotta Wear Shades! Teachers at WCS do a fantastic job and enjoyed a morning tea and lots of chocolates.

Last Wednesday 23 October Kindergarten and Year One went on an excursion to Haddon Rig to watch the sheep shearing. Students assisted the shearers by collecting the wool and branding the wool bales. They also saw the sheep being treated and given vaccinations, met some adorable puppies, slid down the chute, sat in a tractor and patted a horse. The day ended with lunch and iceblocks on Mrs Maclean’s lawn, playing with puppies and collecting eggs from the chooks. Thank you to Mr Leman for driving the bus, Mrs Maclean and all the Haddon Rig staff who were so willing to show us around and let us help for the day.

We value RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS

Following yet another successful performance by the Choir and Instrumental students of Warren Central School at the Rotary Spiring Festival in September, the Warren Rotary branch has generously donated $1200 to the continuation of music in our school and in our community. This generosity will allow for more learning, concerts, resources, exposure and experiences to continue into the future. This donation is just the most recent example of how deeply Rotary cares about our school, our children and our wider community. My personal gratitude goes to Rod Sandell for initiating this and for his continued encouragement. Mrs Evans Music Teacher

2019 Australian Training Officers Association, Student Encouragement Award.

Stephen Owens, Warren Central School We are delighted to announce that Stephen Owens, year 12 student of WCS, has been awarded the 2019 Australian Officers Association, Student Encouragement Award. The ATOA committee judged Stephen worthy to receive an award due to his recorded achievements throughout 2019, and in particular his demonstrated commitment to his studies. We trust that the award will assist Stephen as you move into a career or further education. Congratulations Stephen and all the best with your apprenticeship in Dubbo.

Secondary Student Representative Council members attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference on Monday 28 October in Dubbo. WCS SRC joined 260 student leaders from several schools including Macquarie Anglican Grammar, St Johns College, Mudgee High, Lightning Ridge, Coonabarabran High, Nyngan High, Parkes Christian School and Kinross Wolaroi on the day. Students actively participated in a number of informative and engaging sessions throughout the conference, including “Making Meetings Effective”, “Leading Exciting Events”, “Leading a Team of My Peers” and “Leading in Positive Partnerships with Teachers”. WCS SRC fully embraced this experience, listening intently to the presenters, eagerly taking notes and interacting with other leaders to acquire new ideas and improve their leadership skills. Indeed the highlight for many of our SRC members was connecting with other student leaders. Comments from the day: “The best bit of GRIP was interacting with and meeting new people”. Taylah Reid, Year 9 “The best part of GRIP was how interactive it was and the many opportunities we got to communicate with other students”. Stephanie Squire, Year 10 “One of the best parts of the day was learning new ways to make our school better and more involved in fun projects”. Sophie Hopkin, Year 10 “The GRIP leadership conference was a very productive day. We learnt a lot of leadership techniques to help us for now and later on in life”. Kaitlyn Cosgrove and Leila Gough, Year 9 “The Leading Exciting Events” session was practical and motivational”. Zoey Daley, Year 7 “The presenters were very nice, knowledgeable and encouraging”. Lilly Higgins, Year 7 “The GRIP Leadership Conference was very useful in helping us become better leaders at our school”. Kallie-Lea Daley, Year 9 “The best part of GRIP was making new friends and catching up with old ones”. Chelsey Hewett, Year 10 “The session ‘Making Meetings Effective’ was extremely beneficial as we learnt techniques to ensure our SRC meetings are run efficiently and our time is spent wisely”.
