FROM DAVID'S PEN . . . Dear Friends,

Other than preaching the Sunday after the tornados of April 27th, this is the first opportunity I have had to let you know what we as a church (and a denomination) have been doing (and are planning to do) in regards to recovery

efforts for our community.

On May 1st, an emergency meeting was held at the North Alabama Presbytery offices, and folks from across the Presbytery immediately began the process of coming together and setting up the necessary structures to respond (both in the short and long range terms) to the disaster that just occurred. A follow-up meeting was held the next Sunday, and an Administrative Commission was formed to direct the monies and the volunteer efforts that were already flooding into the Presbytery. Elder Shari Duke and I were tapped as two of the seven persons to serve on this commission, and with the help of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, a branch of the General Assembly, we have been setting up the structures necessary to respond to our recent and major natural disaster.

Our community’s churches and social help agencies met on Monday at an emergency called meeting of ALMA (Athens Limestone Ministerial Alliance) to organize ourselves in very similar ways. As a result of that meeting, the United Way was named as the “hub” for our community’s relief efforts. We were informed that an Emergency Warehouse was being established at the RJW Building on HW31 to receive and distribute donated household items. We were also informed that food donations would be handled by those agencies already established in our community to do so (i.e. LCCI and the Tanner Food Bank).

Many of you have asked the question, “What can I do to help,” and this is what we have discovered: • Non-perishable food donations are still in great need, as are basic

household items. Food can be dropped off at the church or taken to LCCI or Tanner’s Food Bank.

• Household items, like towels, cookware, kitchen equipment, etc., can be dropped off at the Emergency Warehouse on HW31. Clothing items are not being accepted at this time. The Emergency Warehouse has not posted hours yet, for they won’t be able to open their doors until the mid part of next week.

• Tanner Baptist Church is also receiving food, household items, and clothes at their facilities. They are open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9-12pm and 1-3pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they are open from 9-12pm and 1-4:30pm. The contact person for them is Jerry Naylor and his number is 682-6889. The church’s number is 232-8440.

• Volunteers are needed to serve at the Emergency Warehouse and other locations, and you can contact the United Way to volunteer by calling 233-2323 or emailing them at [email protected]

THE CORNER SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS has been using study material from a website, thethoughtfulchristian.com. The website is well-named. Our class have found the studies insightful, informative, and thought-provoking. We have now set up a subscription for the church so we can all have access with no further cost. Visit the website and see what’s there. Contact Emily Clem for the specifics about downloading. We can set up four more users on this same account. There are also handouts in file fold-ers on the shelf in the corner classroom from lessons over the last few months. Feel free to take any of those handouts. These cover topics such as immigration, legalized gambling, medical ethics, atheism, and many more. Some are more biblically based than these examples. This website is affiliated with the Presbyterian Publishing House and we have found it to be an excellent resource..

Last week an e-mail was sent about some lumber John Emberton had salvaged from the destruction of a building of his by one of the tornados. Being a good steward of God’s resources, John graciously thought of his Church family and offered it to anyone having a use for it rather than just scrapping it. The Lord does provide. We, (the Church) are going to pour a 150’ concrete cap on the existing concrete ledge behind the church in an effort to stop the leaks into the basement and the used lumber will make a great forms to cast the cap. Thanks to the Lord for providing and to John for thinking of his “family”.

Pentecost is such an impor-tant time in the church year because it’s when we celebrate the birthday of the Christian church and the com-ing of the Holy Spirit as a bringer of new life. The Spirit’s presence in our lives empowers us, purifies us, re-veals the power and presence of God and unifies us for service in Christ’s name.

That’s why the Pentecost Offering, which is one of the four annual churchwide special offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is so special and meaningful: through the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives, the Pentecost Offering provides a tangible way to bring God’s trans-forming love to children at risk, guide and nurture the faith of young people, and call forth a new genera-tion of church leadership through the PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteer program.

Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised more than $8 million for important ministries that help younger members of God’s family through the Pentecost Offering, and your congregation has probably done its part to contribute generously. This year, we encourage you to en-gage them to prayerfully consider the stories of real people who bene-fit from their contributions. Between now and Sunday, June 12, take a few moments to consider ways to connect your members with the ministries and recipients of the Pentecost Of-fering.

FREE TREE REMOVAL: If anyone still needs help removing trees that came down during the storm, please contact THE UNITED WAY at 256-536-0745. They will come out and remove the trees for free. Please tell others who may also need assistance.

They are also posting on a daily basis the various needs that arise, as well as having weekly storm recovery meetings at the United Way offices at Marion and Lee Streets every Tuesday at 11am. These are open meetings and you are more than welcome to at-tend and give them suggestions.

Each new week brings new discoveries and needs. I will continue to let you know what those are as they emerge. I am so thankful to be a part of a community that cares for one another and part of a denomination that is connectional. We will make it through this disaster by sticking together and counting on God to give us the strength we need. Please continue to keep all those affected by this year’s tornados in your prayers, and, if able, please contact the above numbers (or the church office) to see how you can physi-cally help.

Yours in Christ’s service,

─ David
